Did Ernest Stires compose this music specifically for this film? Or did the students take it from one of his recordings? If he composed it for the film, HOW did that come about? How did the students know of him/or he know of the film? Thanks :-)
Mr. Stires improvised the entire score while watching the film. He was a personal friend of the director's family and generously agreed to do this, and did it brilliantly. The original tape still exists. Before 2010, the film and audio tape had to be played back on separate machines. The film was transferred to digital that year and finally joined with the audio track.
Hi Tony, Ernie was a composition student of my Dad's (Francis Judd Cooke), and a friend of my family's. Such a fun guy, and an amazing pianist--I'll never forget his performance of Samuel Barber's Fugue for piano in our music room. He was the natural person to tap for the Doublecross soundtrack.
