Human Interactions with Pikas

  • Chris Ray, PhD (@pikaresearch), a wildlife biologist and pika researcher at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research, talks about how humans and pikas interract in the alpine. The good news is that people hiking on the 14ers generally will not have much impact on these cute critters and there is little to fear from pikas damaging your gear. The effect of climate change, however, is the main way humans are affecting the American pika. Learn more in this video.

I had a friendship with a pika on top of Jonas Shoulder in Jasper for two years.
He would come right up to me, touch my hand, squeak, then run back a bit. This would go on for a while until he just decided to hang around my leg and hand.
    Just hangin'with me...
I'm not sure if it was the thrill, the companionship or the body warmth, but it was cool hanging with my little buddy right up beside me.

Many people think that pika are a type of rodent. They’re not rodents at all. Biologically pika are actually a cousin of the rabbit family. Pika kind of remind of prairie dogs in a way with how they poke their heads above the rocks and make squeaking noises.

The video was shot in a research area not open to the public. However, you can see pikas on many 14er trails. They tend to be found in talus fields where there is vegetation nearby. One place I've always seen lots of pikas is on the route from Kite Lake up to Mount Democrat. Lots of good habitat and plenty of pikas over the years.

We have had crews working on trails where pikas are frequently around them. They are quick and usually quite busy collecting plants for their hay piles, so can be hard to follow unless you're quick with tracking them.

I could've sworn I saw one of these little guys (or gals) running across a street in my city. But, I'm on the east coast (of the U.S.) and they are on the west coast. This was a few years ago. I saw one running across the yard next door to my house, maybe the same one as it was the same year and it wasn't that far from where I saw it originally, and I haven't seen one since. No long ears, so I wasn't confusing a rabbit with one, and no long tail so it wasn't a squirrel. It was about the size of the animal in the video, same body shape, same ears and it was tan in color and ran the same way. But this isn't their habitat (where I live), so I wonder if that was indeed what I saw. I don't know any other animal that looks like that. Maybe one inadvertently hitched a ride on a truck or something or someone had it illegally as a pet? ??? Don't know how one could've gotten here, but I swear that looks like what I saw. A pika was immediately what I thought of when I saw it.

@@milk8928 I'm not sure about the solidarity part, my only experience with them was in the Rockies when I had several investigating me up close while I was resting. It did seem like there was some community aspect going on though based on the amount of them I saw. The real problem with keeping them as pets though is that most people flat out aren't responsible enough to keep such a fragile animal. You would probably take great care of one, it's everyone else we should worry about, and if we're keeping them because they are endangered, that means we need to breed them, and who knows what confinement in a house would do to their breeding, there are several animals that refuse to breed in captivity, like cheetahs and pandas
