    Stewart, I have been a helicopter instructor pilot for many years, teaching others to become instructor pilots. The best teacher / instructors are those that are passionate about the subject matter they are teaching. You are a great example of that. I love your video tutorials and absolutely loved your Drone Masterclass. I have learned and continue to learn so much from your videos. Keep them coming.

    Hello Stewart,
    To begin, I must say I find your youtube videos to be extremely informative and "no nonsense"; they are some of the best I've watched regarding all things filming with drones.
    I was flying more Air 2S the other evening and when I started flying I did a quick check of the light conditions and determined I would need an ND4 filter to get my shutter speed down to 1/60th since I was filming at 30fps. My aperture was fixed at 2.8 and my ISO was set to 100 for best quality video. I was flying low and fast over a river so motion blur would be necessary to make it more realistic; that's why I put on the ND filter. After the initial low, fast shot I took the drone up higher for more of an overview and noticed my shutter speed had dropped to 1/30th and I would have to fly back about 500 meters to get that ND filter off the drone and that would waste battery power so I just kept filming anyway, and the result was not good due to the very slow shutter speed. In hindsight, I could have upped the ISO to 200 to get the shutter speed back to 1/60th, but I am still learning by experience (mistakes) and didn't think of it at the time. When I got back home I watched this video of yours and got a better idea of what I should have done. I think.
    So, my question is, .... should I up the ISO when I get caught in a situation like this and have more noisy video, or would I have better off to leave the ND off to begin with and not get the proper motion blur for the low fast river flyover but be able to keep the lower ISO for the remaining shots. I had both changing shot requirements (fast motion and slow high overview) and changing light conditions (the evening light was fading). I'm interested in your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

    Without motion blur it’s equivalent to a tv with dynamic mode on, it make thing look to real creating a fake look. Put your camera on your phone at 60fps+ and move it around, then try 24fps or 30fps and replicate the movement... this will simulate what it looks like. Thanks for this simple explanation it helped a lot.

    Great explanation Stewart. Thanks to your efforts I can now tell my ISO from my elbow. Just a thought though, if final cut pro has a function to introduce 'extra' frames to slow footage down, does it also have a function to introduce the motion blur we're all looking for and do away with the primary need for ND's altogether, or is this too much wishful thinking???

    Excellent video Stewart. Lot of learning values. Can't thank you enough. I have got only one question. You have mentioned that there is no point using a nd filter if there is no motion in the frame. However in shots where high dynamic range is required, like in the situations of sunsets or sunrises can we use it to underexpose the blown away areas of the frame? I understand that the darker areas will get even darker, but its always easy to bring out details from the shadows than from the blown away areas in post production. Thanks in advance. Keep up the good work

    Hi Stewart I’ve had a phantom 4 for about 3 years now I’m also a PIFCO holder. Just starting out as an Aerial videographer.
    Just bought a set of polar pro vivid series with polariser filters. But I’m having a issue with the footage I’m recording I’m using the polar pro app you recommend. Fitted the recommended filter. Set the frame rate to 24fps and shutter to 1.50 however when I “pan” the aircraft across slowly I’m getting “gittery” footage not ‘smoot’h like rolling shutter effect which I don’t get without the filter. I would be very grateful for you help sorting this thanks you both take care.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers! Never found them much use on drones because the polarisation is only effective when the sun's rays are at a certain angle to the filter. When you're flying a drone you're normally moving the camera around too much.

  • @morgan_civ
    @morgan_civ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    With ND filters on your drone, do you always aim to hit (lets say you're shooting @ 25fps) around 1/50th of a second, or would you aim for that general area? Very informative video, thank you! I recently bought a few filters for my phantom 3 and I can't wait to use them!

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The goal is certainly to hit 1/50th. If you can't hit it exactly, the options are (a) under/over expose the shot in order to get 1/50th, or (b) shoot with whatever shutter gets you closest to 1/50th with the ND on, so let's say 1/100th for the sake of argument. The latter is still preferable to shooting on 1/4000th so it's still worth doing.

  • @wilcoxtube

    Terrific video and just what I needed, thank you. Question though - should you not use ND filters if utilizing the pre-programmed shots on the Mavic Air specifically? Do those shots - dronie, helix, circle, follow-me, etc. shift to automatic and then prevent you from having the correct settings in manual if you go back to manual afterwards? I may not be explaining as well as you did back in your "things you don't like" part of your recent Mavic Air Review? I use the pre-programmed shots more often than not, so are ND filters a waste of time there? Thanks again!

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! So although the Mavic Air switched to auto settings for these quick shots, you can still change to manual and perform these moves with manual exposure. If you are happy with the auto settings then certainly don't use NDs but if you want to do them with manual exposure then you can use NDs if you wish.

    • @DroneFilmGuide

      It's simply a matter of getting the right strength of ND to get your shutter down to the desired value.

    Did I hear you say "Don't use ND filters when shooting weddings"? I'm shooting a wedding next weekend in the city center on the big market and next to the cathedral. Do you think I will need ND filters on Mini 2? I will shoot video and photo's in between. I also think I will shoot in 60 fps because I want to be able to slow down the footage in post-production.

    Hi Stewart. Thanks for you explanations! If I understand you correctly, the only reason to buy ND filters is for the motion blur ? Not to reduce the amount of light (in case of overexposed scenes) ? Thank you and good continuation :)

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds right. If your only goal is to reduce light then you can just put the shutter up. But if you want to reduce light in a way that doesn't do away with motion blur then you need NDs.

    Should I buy a set of 8 filters.
    4 are polarized (16,32,64)
    3 are non polarized. (4,8,16)
    1 is a circular polarizing lens.
    Or the cheaper all polarized set
    (8,16,32,64)
    I dont see why i should have a drone with a CP lens. Either I want it on or off, I can see my self landing every shift in polarizing. But there's also a ND1000. Which seems interesting, but its sold separately.
    I only ask since I dont see many reasons to have a non polarized lens.
    In my earlier years of droning I lost my Polarized filter, and all my videos were ruined due to the bright glaring light shifting the colors and washing out.

    Thanks for this video Stewart. Can you give example of what you call « no motion plan »? For example: If my drone is flying forward with a tilt reveal, only with landscape, no people or car... or if I film the sea with waves, Do I need motion blur in these cases?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say no need for motion blur in both these examples (provided birds don't fly past). I should have probably made clearer that the vast majority of people will not see the difference with our without ND filters so the need to use them is more likely to be defined by the end goal for the footage. If it's just some holiday shots then it doesn't matter but if it's for a production company then it does.

    Hi, congrats on channel. Have you ever used a Colour Chart card for drone footage? I've struggled to match colours from the air to a DJI Osmo on the ground. I've fixed white balances and such but the colour profiles of the sensors look very different. I'm tempted to film a colour chart (such as the XRite Colour Checker Passport Video) prior to taking off but wondered if the lighting conditions as the drone moves around make the chart recorded near the ground irrelevant. At £140 for the chart its an expensive experiment for me! Any thoughts?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's something we are working on at the moment because our drones have colours completely different to our ground cameras and it can be a pain to match the colours. In theory the XRite should be an easy fix for that or certainly a good starting point. Stay tuned as we haven't formed our conclusions just yet!

    Hey Stewart, just discovered your channel and really love it so far! So I've just gotten back into drone game with my Mavic 2 Pro and trying to do as much research for my upcoming trip to Scotland and the Isle of Skye which I'm very excited to shoot! My question is, if my goal is to take video/photos and want to have the freedom to slow down shots as necessary in post should I just leave the ND filter off? And also if I have any motion in the shot just slow down the shot to 24fps? What would be the settings you would go with on this sort of trip?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Envious you're heading up to Skye! If in doubt, leave the ND off. Assuming you're shooting big landscapes in Skye, there'll be virtually no motion so you won't be able to tell. Let's say you are shooting motion that you want to slow down then you should use the higher frame rates, e.g. 50fps. With 50fps you'll use 1/100th shutter which gives you a darker exposure than realtime at 1/50th. This can be a pain if you are switching between 24/25p and 50/60p mid-flight. If you are just doing slow motion then mindful that 1/100 is fast enough to freeze most motion, if you leave the ND off and shoot at 1/500 for example, it doesn't really make much difference as both shutter speeds are freezing motion. So really the ND discussion centres mainly around 24/25p. Hopefully I've not just confused matters!!

    Let’s say you shot a 24 fps footage. When you watch this on a television which displays this with a 60 Hz refresh rate, how’s your footage influenced by that? Is it getting choppy or so?

    In determining what ND filter you use...shouldn't you be checking your histogram rather than relying on what the image looks like in your phone? or on an LCD screen?...after all on a sunny day it could be very difficult to even see your screen much less accurately gauge your exposure?

I guess what I'm trying to say is when I take movie of Coast line/sea...it doesn't focus correctly and with the good old Irish/Scot clouds they just seem to mesh into one. It doesn't show where the difference between sea and clouds....

    Another question... 180° rule... if the vast majority of the time you want a shutter speed that is two times your frame rate, why does this setting not automatically change when you select your frame rate?

      Dunno. It's an option on our ground cameras actually.

    Would you consider waves to be in motion and thus needing an ND filter? My example would be flying my drone along the beach and over water in a bright sunny day in the Bahamas. Most likely at 50-100 feet. I'm just wondering if I should even bother in that instance.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say 99% wouldn't tell the difference. It's a point I should have probably made clearer in the video because with a shot like the one you describe, you really need an eye for it to spot the difference. So it comes down to who the footage is for.

    For a guide to which ND filter to use the old f/16 rule of photography is very useful. One over the ISO at f/16 will give the correct exposure on a sunny day, it was also called the sunny day rule. On a sunny day at 100 ISO the exposure is 1/100 at f/16. For an exposure of 1/50 at f/16 you would need a 2ND then to bring the exposure to a more suitable aperture say f/8 you would need a 8ND filter rather than the 2ND filter. A 4ND would on a sunny day provide an exposure of 1/50 at f/11 and a 16ND would allow an exposure of 1/50 at f/ 5.6. We could talk about the sun being constant and the intensity being reduced by mist, cloud cover and as the sun come closer to the horizon. So I have to admit that when setting up the phantom 4pro I just look at the prevailing conditions to decide if I need a ND filter or which ND filter value for the aperture and shutter speed as well as iso I wish to use working with M, manual exposure. Cheers, I know a little about photography but find your videos brilliant for all aspects of working with drones, thank you.

    Hi , if motion blur isn't a priority , so no need for a ND filter , but you would still want to use manual exposure settings and keep the iso low to avoid noise , would it just be a matter of increasing shutter speed to keep to much light out ? Thanks , great video

    Would you also recommend ND16/32/64 for Mavic 2 with an adjustable aperture?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're aiming for an aperture of around 4-7 let's say on the M2P then the 8, 16 and 32 should do the trick. You'll be unlikely to need the 64 unless you're filming something white in direct sunlight.

    Hey, thank you for your video. Do you need a polarizer filter or is a ND filter enough?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Polarisers serve a very specific purpose of reducing glare like reflections in water. I've seen great results in landscape photography but they are very difficult to use on a drone so unless you have a specific shot in mind, I'd avoid them.

    Hi, great video! What confuses is me still is the ultimate purpose of the ND filters. You start by saying that it's needed for motion blur but then you discuss how it saves the film in bright conditions. Every Mavic Air video out there starts with the suggestion to put ISO to 100 but then put on ND filters otherwise it's just a massively overexposed image. But if ND filters are really for achieving motion blur then is this just a positive side effect? Thanks

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The only purpose of ND filters is to reduce light to the sensor, everything else is a byproduct. You're right to keep ISO on 100 for minimum sensor noise but it's the shutter speed that influences motion blur. Primary function of shutter speed is to control the amount of light - secondary function is to control motion blur. But if you are forced to have a 1/50 shutter for motion blur reasons then you need an additional method of reducing light to the sensor if the image is over exposed, i.e. NDs.

    Hi Stewart quick question if I can. Unfortunately I have got the nd/pl filters and are a nightmare especially when you filming with the sun and water I do not understand how to setup according. So my question is: could I use the Mavic Air without nd filters and if yes I need to use normal profile rather than d-cinelike? Thanks and sorry for the stupid question

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem! NDs have no influence on whether you should use normal or d-cinelike given that all they do is darken an image as opposed to change the colours. So do with that as you wish. As for whether you can use a drone without NDs...YES! I should have probably been clearer in pointing out that the vast majority of audiences will not notice the difference between shots with or without NDs, especially if there is little motion in the shot. If however you are producing footage for a client who expects things to be 'right' then you will need them. So especially if you have the ND/PL filters, if in doubt, leave them off until you are confident with them.

    So what if I shoot a landscape with a waterfall in it? Do you use ND filters to blur the waterfall or do you creep the crispiness of droplets bouncing of rocks?

    • @StevenPeeters
      @StevenPeeters 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, of course. That was a photograph tuned specifically for getting the blurred effect with a 1/5th shutter speed. I'm talking about filming, not photography

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Steven! Because the water is moving so fast, if you are shooting at the 'correct' shutter of 1/50th for real time 25fps let's say, then there will still be tons of blur in the movement of the water. If you wanted crispiness of the water bouncing on the rocks you could go without an ND, shoot on something like 1/1000th but I would suggest it might look 'jumpy' and be a giveaway that you are not shooting with the correct shutter.

    I am a real estate agent and film the exterior of homes, for the most part at 5' to 100' and then edit in Final Cut PRo X. I shoot at 4k 60fps on a P4P, with the intention to slowing virtually everything down to 30 fps in 1-4 second clips, to make them buttery smooth. You mentioned not using ND filters if the intention is to slow the footage down. If I can not achieve the 180 degree rule without the use an ND filter, do I simply crank up the shutter speed? I also use a DJI Ronin S and a Sony A7riii when shooting the inside of homes, also, with the intention of slowing 60fps footage to 30 fps, to achieve the same buttery 1-4 second clips. Same answer?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. If you're not getting the 180 degree rule then just crank up the shutter. I should imagine you're not doing wild motion for your real estate stuff so it'll be almost impossible to tell the difference. If you think about it, at 60fps, the shutter should be 1/120th. For most photography, this shutter would be enough to freeze motion so it's kind of academic whether your shutter is, let's say, 1/500th or 1/120th because they both freeze motion. The difference is more visible if the shutter should be 1/50th and there is motion in the shot.

    • @rickbell3131

      I’m confused? Assuming that I intend shoot in 4K/60fps, 1/120th shutter speed and can achieve correct exposure through the use of an ND filter, why would this configuration be inappropriate if I intend to slow the footage down to 30 FPS in post?

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not inappropriate, that's correct.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We use these kind of variable NDs for our ground cameras and have similar issues. They are quick and practical though when you are on the ground at least. Because there are two bits of glass in these NDs, there is always a risk of ugly lens flares though.
