Its actually heartbreaking to see when Otto says, 'If they take me away, they'll take my arms'. Its really humanizing even after all he's done to see an old man afraid to have to watch as his body becomes nothing but a shell.

It's a degenerative disease. Hawking was able to move just fine well into adulthood, and you can even find online a photo from his first wedding where he's standing next to his wife and only using a cane. Given time. Doc Octavius would eventually be just like Hawking. That being said, there are different forms of ALS, and Hawking was "lucky" that he had a form that was so slow moving that he was able to live as long as he did. Most don't live that long.

Small detail, but I found it neat how the schematics on otto's drawing boards became more wild and menacing looking throughout the story, signaling his change in personality
Like the whiteboard which was covered in black with a black drawing of the arm in the middle. Like he drew over all of the possible tests and outcomes because he became obsessed with the arms.
And if you look around the lab nearing the breakdown of Octavious you can see the suit or the goggles he will wear, and he even comments about them. Such a cool and small detail

@@andrewpenn1145 if you mean Molina being in NWH that’s shit had been knowledge for a while Molina even did a interview in like June where he confirmed his involvement
ditto. just the difference in the ways he utters the words "you knew" you can see as he cycles through sorrow over things turning out like this, feeling betrayed that a man he came to see as a father figure would do this to him, to sheer anger that all of this suffering, not just from peter himself but for may, mj, miles, all these people that are suffering, is because otto and li just want revenge on a single man. and not only that, but otto himself knew the pain he was going to bring peter and still did what he did. it'd be hard not to turn ruthless at that point.
This script for this game is incredible. During the fight Otto say's something to the effect of "you haven't suffered like I have" and I was actually full of rage for Peter at that point. Like how much more selfish could Otto be that he claims to have seen Peter as a son but doesn't recognize that Peter has suffered as much or more than he has? That's how you know that Otto was full of shit all game and that it was always about his ends, never about Peter. Also, that line serves to highlight why Peter and Otto make such good enemies. Both are brilliant men who have suffered tremendously throughout their lives, but while Otto is ultimately broken by his pain (like the weak man that he is) Peter continues to be Spider-Man, despite all the suffering that his powers have caused him. Earlier in the game when Peter gets poisoned he keeps hallucinating and all the things that Scorpion and Otto taunt him with are actually Peter's greatest insecurities. Spider-Man is defined by his suffering and by his fear that he's a failure and that he only hurts the people he's trying to help.
I don't think Otto is weak per se. They are similar, indeed - but they come from different places. Otto didn't have loving parent figures, teaching him what is good. Otto didn't have supermodel-like Gwens, Lizes and Mary Janes flocking around him. Otto weren't bitten by a radioactive invertebrate, granting him awesome powers and self-respect. You switch them, and they would easily become alternates of themselves. Superior Spider-man series gave us a hint of that.
That's the whole point of Spider-Man. Anyone can be good when it's easy. Between the tremendous amounts of loss he's experienced and how hard up he is for cash there is every reason for Peter to abuse his powers, but he doesn't. And I vehemently disagree with your view of Superior Spider-Man. Otto in Peter's body was a huge self-important asshole who put strain on a bunch of Peter's relationships and got the city to hate him again.
Yeah, and at the end, Otto needs Parker to be spiderman again because he was the superior one. So yes, Otto is a weaker person, which is understandable because Peter is an archetipic hero.
I really like how they don't immediately have Otto be evil. They have him start out good, make him mentally change in a realistic way, and so it feels more hurtful when he abandons his ideals for revenge.
@Chris Sauron, Doomsday (even though he kinda has a sad backstory, I think he would still be a killing machine even without it). These characters are pretty much the absolute opposite to everything a paragon is and/or strives to be.

I 100% believe Otto knew right there that Peter was Spider-Man. He’s a genius mind, he even said it’s obvious. It wasn’t until he was against Peter he finally revealed that he was completely aware of who he was.

"... you *knew*!" That line. That line was hands down the best of the game, even with it being one of the best written games in 2018. At that moment, Peter understood exactly who Octavius was. It didn't to him that Peter was Spider-Man. Peter, who he claimed to consider a son to him. He still did everything he did; releasing supervillains, spreading a supervirus, killing who knows how many people. @@matthewayvar9393 yeah, but we thought he only thought that Peter was spidey’s designer and gadget maker. It was only then we were revealed at some point he realised it was him the whole time
Peter and Otto's voice actors are on another goddamn level. There is _so_ much emotion conveyed in every line. The after-battle scene made me cry harder than any fiction in a _long_ time.
Thank you! Something you may not have realized: Yuri and I acted out those scenes in full-body motion-capture. Insomniac used our entire performances, not just our voices.
I honestly love how Otto is doing things involving prosthetics because he's soon to be completely paralyzed. It feels so real and genuine, and makes it all the more impactful and sad that Otto ended up falling to madness.
Keith Lee because you're supposedly an actor (not saying I believe you) why in the fuck would that make your opinion more valid? It doesn't take knowing how to act to tell a good Spider-Man, it takes knowing comic book history; a history to which Holland's version is the most loyal and true.
The attempt to reconcile with peter in that last moment can be boiled down to one line. "Of course, your secret will be safe with me" Thats deceitful and manipulative, and is the blatant hint to Peter that Otto's mind is permanently damaged from the neural link.
The "You *Knew* " was horror inducing, the amount of anger, betrayal and sorrow but no ounce of hate. Peter really did love Otto, his betrayal only hurted him more, and the final note of pain was him walking away from a shell of man that he considered a hero.
wait, why peter surprised when otto said parker at 33:57 ? peter must be not surprised cause otto knew peter is spiderman in the beginning of the game when peter tried to fix his suit in the lab and otto caught him? please explain to me
@@Gebro_gaming891Honestly, I feel like Otto immediately knew when he saw Peter with the suit, I feel like he just decided to pretend he didn't know to keep Peter calm since they were friends.
When Otto thanked Peter after turning off the interface when he begged him to turn it off, that was probably the last time the real Otto was really there before getting completely corrupted.
I feel like the last time I saw the real Otto was when Peter convinced him to turn it off himself in the full 4-arm reveal. He relented for a moment, and even though it was short lived, it seemed genuine. But then again, right after, the way he looked at him and smiled, waving him away saying that he'll keep at it and work out some bugs, it seemed kind of, well, sinister... and I can't help but wonder if his momentary hesitation was actually just him realizing that he needs to be more subtle to not alarm Peter too much and expose his intentions. I guess that's a testament to how well this entire character arc was. It's hard to tell exactly where the Otto that Peter idolized stopped showing up, and when he was fully replaced by Doc Ock, or if he was even gone altogether. Heck, even at the very end, I was starting to wonder if some of the old Otto was showing up one last time. It feels like you can still see glimpses even up to the end of the story, but sometimes the way it's delivered makes you wonder if it's a facade or if it's sincere. It's so well done, hats off to everyone involved.
Poor Otto Octavius. Lost control of his life, lost his livelihood, lost control of his body, and eventually lost control of his mind. Just a life of losing. No wonder he felt like a loser.
@@DarsiPadilla he was beaten by his alcoholic father, and he's also bullied a lot as a kid. His mother pushed him and supported him to become an atomic scientist, and he invented the mechanical arms, but she didn't allow him to find love. She betrayed Otto when she started dating other men. She died of a heart attack when she and Otto argued about this subject. Then Otto became workaholic, arrogant, and a loner. He didn't sleep or eat either just to finish his work. One day, his experiment got out of hand and it exploded, which led to the Doctor Octopus we know today.
See, the thing I appreciate about this Doc Oc version is that it treats the arms as the scientific breakthrough they should be. In Rami's movie, as much as I love it, the arms are treated as a scientific afterthought. But the implications of having a neural connection with artificial limbs would be a huge breakthrough in the real world.
I wouldn't say so. He was obviously showing off, if you can call it that. "See these super advanced robotic limbs? Oh, these are nothing... prepare for a real treat now". He was flexing in what he believed to be his moment of glory.
@@eoftar3192 In the movie, James Franco makes a big deal about how Otto's fusion energy project will make them rich and famous, but... the arms alone would ABSOLUTELY do that, for the reasons I posted earlier. Maybe the sun experiment was a failure but holy hell, a neural link with robotic limbs? That should still get you the Nobel Prize.
That is because of ambitions. They had two projects and Oscorp was oaying for the fusion one. The arms were a "means to an end" but were still an amazing scientific discovery nonetheless. Its like, trying to uncover a project, you invent something new for it. Even though whst you invented is groundbreaking, the project is the focus. I.e. imagine if NASA is building a spaceship that can go lightspeed, and for that, they create a G-Suit that can withstand the pressure. Thr G-Suit is a groundbreaking creatjon in itself, but what NASA will announce is the ship they crested, with the suits as a bonus.
"Thank you Peter...for everything." He 100% knew he was already too far gone, but still didn't want Peter caught up in it. It makes this incarnation of Doc Oc all the more tragic.
This is how you do a tragic antagonist, NOT a tragic villain. There’s a huge difference and this Otto fulfills the first. I seriously felt bad for him the entire time. Who wouldn’t do what he did after all the shit he’d been through? Not to mention the shit that’s actually happening to his body and mind. Well done to the writers and actor who portrayed him.
Nah he's a villain dude, he knew he was spidey and yet he knew that he was hurting people and could possibly be hurting peter and his family. Though I felt bad for him for most of the game I ended up hating him so much at the end
I agree that the character was well done. And I'm not even a fan of the Spiderman franchise. But any way you look at it, he's still a villain. Despite all of his misfortunes and flaws, it's no excuse for essentially becoming a terrorist, willing to cause terror, destruction and death just to make a trivial point. Still though, he's definitely a tragic villain. If I was Peter, I'd show the guy a little bit of respect by visiting him in prison, out of sympathy. But he deserves everything he got.
@@12227UserName Osborn stole his bloody company. How is that trivial. Does not justify his actions, but you at least understand why he is doing this. And he is a complete villain. To me, a villain is someone who shows no remorse and cares about no one but himself. I feel genuinely bad that how things turn out in the end. The relation between Otto and Peter was so sincere in my eyes about they deeply cared each other with mutual respect that at the end of the story, I couldn't even dare call him "Doctor Octopus" because it's too insulting that this portrayal of "Doctor Octavius" is so heartbreaking, it's like losing a friend turning into your worst enemy. I would even say that Insomniac did a great job for the reimagining of the caracther to his downfall ... I mean look at 20:07, this pause that is silent but says "I'm so sorry ..." because he knew that Spider-man was Peter...
We need more people like you in the internet. You summarized Doc Ock here perfectly. If they ever make this into a series and not just one game they have to so much potential with the other Spider-Man villains. But here. This is by far my favorite interpretation of Doctor Octopus.
On the one hand I agree with you, on the other I don't. In the end, I think Octavius did care for Peter in his own warped way. But the fact is, he knew he was Spider-man from the moment he saw him with the costume. Then throughout the course of the game, armed some of his greatest enemies who had no qualms with killing him in the past, against him. Purposely endangering Peter's life. When Peter realized that fact, I'm sure he started to wonder how much the Otto he knew was the inhibitor chip, and how much was it the real Otto. Tragic tale, no doubt about it. But Otto was still very much a monster for what he did.
It's crazy that the anti-ock suit Peter uses in the final battle has the same eyes design of the Tobey McGuire's Spider-Man suit, the one who fought Doc Ock in the movies
I love how heavy and mechanical the arms sound. I also like how instead of the arms somewhat controlling him, his disorder is fueling his hatred and evilness.
If they make another Doc Ock like this one or the Raimi one, I hope that his hatred is fueled by both his disorder while the AI in the arms is influenced by Otto’s growing anger, causing the arms to gain 4 parts of his personality.
What’s interesting is that you can see the limbs slowly becoming less human like and more octopus as time goes on. The reasons for making it like that are viable too, which is neat.
The juggling arms feel like tentacles constricted in human shape. You can feel the violence that Doc Oc is ready to dish out, just underneath the skin, still limited by his humanity.
that's why his name as villain is "Doctor Octopus", however I think that it would be better if he had 8 tentacles instead of 4, because an octopus has 8 tentacles, so he would look like an octopus even more.
@@Shotokan1001 something interisting is that in the game I never saw him getting mentionated as "Doctor Octopus" I always hear him as just Otto or Octavius.
@@rickyplaysyt4322 well i can tell you a reason tgat is the most realistic. He started being doc ock like 3 days before gathering the sinister 6. He wasn't a criminal until then. Spiderman had fights with rhino, electro, vulture and scorpion multiple times so that's how they came up with aliases ir nicknames. Notice how mister negative was only adressed "mr. Well you know Peter is able to discern the difference between the actual Octavious and the mentally alteterd Octavious. And he knows that he was partially responsible for what happened to Otto.
Of course we knew what was going to happen, Doc Ock is one of the most popular super villains. Insomniac then decided to make Octavius an inspiring, relatable character. That way, we didn't want to fight him.
That's the sad part; fate will very rarely be kind to Doc Ock. It's like some cross-universe karma; other versions of him are so evil that they affect even the most innocent versions of him to lead him down such a path.
I love how this game builds the relationship between them and makes his inevitable betrayal that much more heart breaking. Sony pictures could learn a thing or 2 from this.
I absolutely love the reveal of Octavious in this game. He wasn’t featured in the advertising once, so him being in the game was a complete surprise. The game begins with a comic accurate costume for Spider and same for Kingpin, so when Otto’s silhouette is in the lab and we see someone with a lab coat and four tentacle like metal wires in his back, our instinct tells us it’s Doc Ock. But no, it’s a friend of Peters
They had me absolutely convinced that Green Goblin was going to be the antagonist with all of the Norman Osborn references in the trailers, but the moment I saw Otto I had a really good idea of what they were going to do, and it still broke my heart when it all went down
15:04 Watch this whole cutscene, at the start Otto is limping, probably due to his condition worsening. But when he has the arms out, he uses them to support himself and can walk, to a degree, normally
Well yes he stated that he had his motor neurons worsening and that he would lose control of his motor functions within a year. I mean if he escapes raft he needs those arms for everything.
I like how the arms that Dr.Octavius makes in the game aren't simply there to allow him to hold "The power of the Sun, in the palm of my hand" but instead are actually required for his continued wellbeing, as he has that "Degenerative Neurological Disorder" which makes his muscles weak/unresponsive, he needs the arms to live a normal life... but due to the intense neural load and his deep hatred for Norman Osborn, they inadvertantly corrupted his mind
Doesn't really make him any more sympathetic then Sam raimis doc ock since he created the arms for the sole purpose of stabilizing fusion and making renewable energy for the entire world only for him to miscalculate and end up having his wife dead and his entire life going to waste, then he gets corrupted by the arms who were designed only for the fusion so they steal and make equipment to make the machine again only for peter to stop him and convince to give up the thing he wants most for the right thing.
I’ll admit this doc oct reminds me so much of the one from spider man 2, they started off as good people in the beginning but eventually turned evil due to others
The Doc Oc in SM2 was different, the Sun particle generator affected his neural interface thus causing voices coming from the metal tentacles talking to him , causing him to spiral down a criminal path The one in this Spidy game, Doc Oc was already obsessed and infuriated with Norman Osborn , him discovering neural interface and later on having that motor control damage to his altering his personality + having a personal vendetta only further feed into his obsession while he secretly plotted revenge right under Pete"s nose
@Velocerbate The comics one is pretty significant at this point as well. Sure he's not some tragic sob story but Superior Spider-Man is one of the best Spidey and Doc Ock stories of all time since it peels back the layers and deconstructs Spidey and Octavius as characters. I'm honestly hoping they use that story in these games at some point since Doc Ock is established as already losing his motor functions. I could definitely see him going after Peter's body and becoming Superior Spidey by swapping minds since his arms already failed.
I always felt that at around 20:06, with Otto Octavius knowing Peter was Spider-Man, you could see some sign of remorse that Otto knew he was hurting Peter, both physically and emotionally, yet sadly his vengeance to bring Osborn down was far greater than his friendship with Peter.
The story between the two is, so multi-layered for a superhero story that it's unreal. I mean Arkham has a good story; but its character's weren't as human or complex as this. This however is a true evolution of what people expect from these kinds of stories, these character's and it's amazing ;)
I don't know if I'm wrong but at that moment you can see that out of all rain drops falling off his face you can notice a tear dropping from his left eye(the tear seems to stand out and it made this scene really tragic) and just by thinking that I became even sadder than before.
The relationship they built between these 2 during the game was great, it made me feel bad knowing what would become of him, also doc has the best rendered face in the game
From the very beginning, I knew something was coming (not just because he is Doc Ock). Their relationship was so pure and close, I knew the creators were gonna rip it apart right in front of us (':
I love the line “For the first time in my life, I don’t feel like a failure, I feel like me.” You empathize with Otto because I think we all know what it’s like to be in that situation, the idea of finally feeling like a winner and that you’ve accomplished something; this version and the Spider-Man 2’s Doc sock isn’t great just because he’s a cool looking bad guy, it’s because that he’s a person, and that’s what a villain should be, a person who in their own dark world believes they are right; not to mention that Salyers and Molina give the best performances ever to this amazing character, and it can’t also go without saying that Lowenthal and Maguire are just as great as the previously said two actors
This is especially true for spider man villains I think. They are nearly always very damaged, but ultimately good people, at least in the cinematic releases. They are tragic and their powers never really feel like something that defines their character, but their character shapes their powers.
20:07 I like how you can see otto’s expression of how hard it is to do what he’s doing especially since he knows Peter is Spider-Man. That expression you can just see that it was hard for him to be that relentless and threaten Peter.
This might be the best Octavius has ever been portrayed. His character arc going from a good man who wants to help people to a supervillain through no real fault of his own made me genuinely feel bad for him and the final scene he was in hit me in the feels so hard.
"It's because people like us have a duty, a responsibility, to use our talents in the service of others, even if they don't appreciate it" "With great power, comes great responsibility" Well played Insomniac.
@@RickyG93 Its because it's the same concept but they both view it differently. Peter sees it as helping his equals, Otto sees it as keeping control over those beneath him.

let's be realistic here even if they get mark Hamill I doubt they would try too top afred Molina's ock doc i'm kind of expecting (and hoping) for him to be a generic mad scientist and green goblin right hand man in the Mcu
If I'm gonna be honest they basically just gave him the Lizard's story. He's a well meaning scientist working for the betterment of humanity while also trying to cure his own disability who ends up losing sight of what's good and becomes deranged from the obsession of completing his project.
This is the definitive Doctor Octopus, he's always been my favourite Spider-Man villain, but at the end of the day, he was just a silly scientist with extra legs and a scheme for world domination, but this and Alfred Molina are the best and most complex Doc Ock portrayals
They did Dr. Octavius so right in this game, he’s humanized very well and you genuinely feel terrible seeing him descend into such a desperate, dangerous path
Can we just take a second to appreciate the way the typical “with great power must also come great responsibility” idea becomes twisted and far darker after it’s been shaken around by Otto? He takes a message meant to inspire acts of heroism, selflessness, and sticking up for the little guy and, thanks to deep-seated bitterness and a crumbling psyche, turns it into an insane ramble on those “beneath” men like he and Peter. Tries to use it as his own justification. That’s one cool thing about everything Spider-Man: this idea of responsibility comes up and is played with again and again. And Peter, a hero to his core, always sees through the dark spins that other may put on it, sees through to its true message, and does the right thing... Even when it hurts like hell.
I like how he tries to convince Peter, but then he threatens to expose his secret, making Peter realized he is too far gone to help. The arms and chip didn't turned him like this. They only amplied his existing dark emotions.
its a great use of norman osbourne as a shared antagonist. Spiderman is absolute about his morals. While Doc Ock thinking he can decide who lives and dies sends him down a dark path.
I still think the reveal of Octavius alone was amazing. When I heard Peter's working at a lab and he gets a call from a doctor my immediate response was "Cool, Kurt Conners is in the game. Wonder if we'll get Lizard." And then I see the wires mimicking the arms and my jaw drops. Doc Ock's in the game. With Conners Lizard is a possibility, with Octavius Doc Ock is inevitable.
Lizard was also teased, you can find a backpack with a vial of his blood, and he appears alongside Norman and Harry (Venom) at the end credits scene of Miles Morales
The voice actor for peter parker is brilliant. I love how he conveyed the subtle change in the two voice lines with “You knew?!” In total shock to “YOU KNEW!” In anger as it dawns on him that the man peter saw as a father figure and friend worked so hard to jeopardize his life and his family’s lives
Also his grunts of pain when he’s stabbed with the tentacle, and his whimper when its out makes him feel more real and vulnerable, like an actual human feeling pain
To me Norman Osborn was the real villain of the entire game. Both Li and Ock may be antagonists but they were victims of Oscorp, one literally and the other taken advantage of. Everything Norman did was out of self gain and selfish ambition. Even when facing Doc Octavius with his life, instead of admitting all his wrongs, he decided to further demoralize Octavius to the end. A real villain wouldn't show any remorse, and Osborn did just that. But even after all Octavius had done, he poured his heart out to Peter, although it wasn't 100%, it still showed his humanity towards the only person he had left.
Yeah, well even he wasn't truly evil. Norman really did feel bad about killing Li's parents, truly loved his wife and did everything he could to help save his son's life.
I mean Norman was trying to save his son. What I am wondering is why he didn't ask anyone for help. Octavius would have helped him. I just think the conditions behind Harry's illness are unnatural.
That last scene between Yuri Lowenthal and William Salyers is masterfully done. The pure rage and heartbreak in Peter’s voice and the persistence and determination Otto’s voice to get Peter to help him in the way Otto expects him to really sells the scene. Insomniac has had a couple misses with their last couple games imo but this game is a masterpiece.
The foundations existed before that. The experiment that fused the tentacles to Otto in the comics is basically the same as in the Raimi movie. He was just less sympathetic in his original origin story. In every version of the villain they always make it a point that Otto made the arms to compensate for his bodies limitations. It’s not hard to make a version of the villain that was once a good man.
Otto's gradual decay into insanity in this is considerably nuanced, human and believable being as it's determined by a number of things, i.e. his mind deteriorating, his limb condition worsening that therefore continued to drive further his obsession of wanting to improve his body which integrally leads him becoming increasingly influenced by the neural hub interface as it damages his brain. However, in the Spider-Man 2 movie Otto's downfall was down to the hub neural control chip being destroyed at the accident which prevented the metal arms from controlling him. This is better overall execution as everything leads into each-other as a cohesive package in believable manner that you cannot help sympathize considering that the damage to Otto here, both mentally and physically is permanent. Though it's clear that the motions of the character, the way he moves around, depicted is undoubtedly similar to Spider-Man 2's interpretation off the character that it's obviously a huge source of inspiration in making of this story; there's simply no denying that this pretty much surpasses it in nearly every single way in terms of the writing of the character. The story of this game truly explored the source of Otto Octavias's inner ambitions like no other Spider-Man medium. Otto's obsessive workaholic nature of wanting to change the world with technology along with the consequently touchy and jealous bitterness the disgruntled scientist harbored for Norman Osborne's corruption as well as accomplishments; whilst in turn ignoring his own flaws and finally his creeping disabilities that eventually turned him from a good noble scientist who only wanted the betterment of mankind to a sadistic monster bent on revenge purely out of egotistical pride.
This is the most heart breaking relationship. We see a man who acted selflessly become the most selfish man in the city. We desperately wanted him to stray away from being a villain. We came to love him and agree with his ideals. This is glorious writing and acting. I cannot wait to see what Insomniac will make next
Mordecai: "Dude eat a Snicker" Rigby: "Why?" Mordecai: "You turn into a crazy evil scientist with four tentacles when you're hungry." Rigby: *eats Snickers* Mordecai: "Better?" Rigby: "STOP TALKING!!!!! Better."
This game did something I've never seen a game do. Every single one of us, each and every one, knew the ending. We knew exactly what was gonna happen, from the second they said his name was Otto Octavius. And it *still* hurt to watch.
The story is something new you may love it or hate it and it's so new. Now that otto and osborn are enemies how are we gonna see the birth of goblin? and how is he gonna fit in? if they are enemies?
@@skullfishd2346 They already planted the seeds for the goblin. His prototype bombs, the mask, the green serum Harry is in. Norman pretty much has all he needs to eventually become the goblin.
I love this portrayal of Doc-Oc, when I see this version of Doc-Oc I don't see a bad guy I see a man who has a great idea and mind but who has reached his breaking point. His creation exploited that breaking point. Love this character and hope he finds redemption in future games!
37:53 "No! If they put me away, they'll take my arms!" Damn that quote is so sad I feel sorry for Otto. He just wanted to help people and he got burned for it. +Hafidz Murshidie it's just my theory. There was no Ultimate comics Spiderman suit because Miles Morales is also in the game. and guess what, symbiote and Superior spidey suit aren't in the game also because MIles and Doc Oc will be spideys in the sequel of this game. lol
its a possibility, but i see it more as doc oc trying to manipulate Peter by exploiting his past feelings of him. the game more hinted at symbiotes and the goblin for the next one.
Otto screaming out peters name at the end just hits so hard with emotions because of the bond those two had. It’s one of the reasons I love this game so much and how it builds up a story.

Including the comic books, this has the be one of the best interpretations of Doc Ock in history. The creation of the arms is directly linked to his fears and drive to fix them, and the outcome of having/creating them is what leads to his downward spiral. Genius writing.
Remember, this is the guy who voiced our favorite slacker, Rigby. It shows you that range is just as important as "living as the character" Let that sink in
It’s so heavy-hitting to watch the relationship between Peter and Otto finally crumble at the end. Peter still had hope in the Octopus up until the very end, and it crushed him in the end when he realized Otto was too far gone.
"You knew?" Yeah no shit he saw you with the costume. As if one of the greatest minds of all time wouldn't have put two and two together. Still I guess Octavius made that excuse to calm him down. Bottom line was that he’d keep his secret so Peter doesn’t have to worry about anything.
The writing in this game was so good that I was shocked that Doc Oc, one of the most cartoonishly evil members of Spider Man's rogues gallery, was actually a villain this time around.
The worst part of all this is the guilt Peter must feel knowing that maybe he could have saved Otto if he had paid a little more attention and hadn’t kept shoving him to the wayside. And by extension, Aunt May and everyone else who fell to Devil’s Breath.
God, Otto is one of the few villians that you just feel so bad for. He's not evil, he's just scared of losing what little of himself he had left, and in his attempt to save his life he lost everything.
Now MCU has to top this Doc Ock potrayal, what an amazing antagonist, so much emotional weight on him and Peter, better yet, we didnt even see Green Goblin in his suit! This game is Amazing, Spectacular, Superior, I dont know, I'm running out of spidey's adjectives
Well, as far as I know, Marvel Studios are not going to use villains who were already used in the movies (like Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Electro, Lizard). So they are going to use Vulture, Scorpion (both were in Homecoming, Scorpion was in post credit scene), Mysterio (will be the villain in "Far From Home") and others.
The only way I can really see the mcu topping this is if they had introduced doc Ock in the first film, not as a bag guy but as a mentor not unlike Tony start and then waited a few movies to really build the emotional weight of his switch to evil
This is easily my favorite and top 3 best incarnation of Doc Oct yet. He wasn't a scientist that was WAY too ambitious for his own good and went mad because of radiological poisoning on his mind. He's a sad victim of cooperate greed, a failing body, and jealousy that a man he once called friend betrayed him, used him, and stole everything from him.
Actually the devs thought of that and during the lab scenes you can see the arm development progress from human to tentacle with notes saying they will be able to take different shapes. Great attention to deal
Even at the very start of this video, you can see that the tubes that Otto is connected to resemble the placement of his future tentacles. That combined with the shot of the prosthetic arm extending out like a tentacle is god-tier foreshadowing, and makes me love this game even more than I already do.
Its actually heartbreaking to see when Otto says, 'If they take me away, they'll take my arms'. Its really humanizing even after all he's done to see an old man afraid to have to watch as his body becomes nothing but a shell.
Auzzie015 I think it’s also because his body has that thing simpler to ALS so his new arms are the only way he can walk grab things etc

I like how Peter drops the friendly neighbourhood's Spiderman personality and becomes ruthless real quick when he is hurt by Otto's revelation.
ditto. just the difference in the ways he utters the words "you knew" you can see as he cycles through sorrow over things turning out like this, feeling betrayed that a man he came to see as a father figure would do this to him, to sheer anger that all of this suffering, not just from peter himself but for may, mj, miles, all these people that are suffering, is because otto and li just want revenge on a single man. and not only that, but otto himself knew the pain he was going to bring peter and still did what he did. it'd be hard not to turn ruthless at that point.
Makes you wonder if he's started being desperate THEN evil for himself over others. Or was it always there?

Going on a whim with the multiverse in mind, but maybe in Raimis universe the arms were not that great.

That sounds genius
What’s interesting is that you can see the limbs slowly becoming less human like and more octopus as time goes on. The reasons for making it like that are viable too, which is neat.
The juggling arms feel like tentacles constricted in human shape. You can feel the violence that Doc Oc is ready to dish out, just underneath the skin, still limited by his humanity.
that's why his name as villain is "Doctor Octopus", however I think that it would be better if he had 8 tentacles instead of 4, because an octopus has 8 tentacles, so he would look like an octopus even more.

@@cosneanumatei5117 Just pointing out an awesome attention to detail the animators/mocap actor put in
I like how the arms that Dr.Octavius makes in the game aren't simply there to allow him to hold "The power of the Sun, in the palm of my hand" but instead are actually required for his continued wellbeing, as he has that "Degenerative Neurological Disorder" which makes his muscles weak/unresponsive, he needs the arms to live a normal life... but due to the intense neural load and his deep hatred for Norman Osborn, they inadvertantly corrupted his mind
Makes him more sympathetic, huh?
Yeah
The Doc Oc in SM2 was different, the Sun particle generator affected his neural interface thus causing voices coming from the metal tentacles talking to him , causing him to spiral down a criminal path
The one in this Spidy game, Doc Oc was already obsessed and infuriated with Norman Osborn , him discovering neural interface and later on having that motor control damage to his altering his personality + having a personal vendetta only further feed into his obsession while he secretly plotted revenge right under Pete"s nose
Otto is great character that that had to made poor mistakes in order to save him self. He is not a villan mor like anti-hero
I loved that series . I was actually hoping for a superior spider-man costume.

This is especially true for spider man villains I think. They are nearly always very damaged, but ultimately good people, at least in the cinematic releases. They are tragic and their powers never really feel like something that defines their character, but their character shapes their powers.

Peter will always hold to the true meaning of responsibility with power to help people. Because of his uncle.
Well, lizard is gonna be in the next one
Lizard was also teased, you can find a backpack with a vial of his blood, and he appears alongside Norman and Harry (Venom) at the end credits scene of Miles Morales

Norman really did feel bad about killing Li's parents, truly loved his wife and did everything he could to help save his son's life.
he poured his heart out to Peter and then started the blackmail talk about knowing who he is - nope Otto was already gone there
Tom Kurstjens It still doesn’t justify ordering Sable to kill Spiderman while gangs of escaped prisoners ravage the streets.
I mean Norman was trying to save his son. What I am wondering is why he didn't ask anyone for help. Octavius would have helped him. I just think the conditions behind Harry's illness are unnatural.
It’s funny that tony did something similar to mysterio and vulture in the mcu
That last scene between Yuri Lowenthal and William Salyers is masterfully done. The pure rage and heartbreak in Peter’s voice and the persistence and determination Otto’s voice to get Peter to help him in the way Otto expects him to really sells the scene.
@@Broomer52true

"You knew?" Yeah no shit he saw you with the costume. As if one of the greatest minds of all time wouldn't have put two and two together. Still I guess Octavius made that excuse to calm him down. Bottom line was that he’d keep his secret so Peter doesn’t have to worry about anything.
He also never disguised his voice

Neither does almost every superhero, heck some don’t even wear masks.
Dude oct didn’t know that Peter was Spider-Man, he only thought Peter crafted Spider-Man suits, listen closely. 2:32
@@megumin9808 which was probably just something he said to keep leverage over peter
@@antonissa8345 that's cause everyone in metropolis who can't tell that Clark Kent is Superman is a complete idiot.
The writing in this game was so good that I was shocked that Doc Oc, one of the most cartoonishly evil members of Spider Man's rogues gallery, was actually a villain this time around.
Which is weird because he's one of the better written ones in the media that includes him. I guess he's hard to animate or something
31:57 I actually teared up from how powerful that is. The score. What the fight means. Knocked it out of the park, Insomniac.
15:27 this is actually an important detail since this makes ottos arms react faster then peters spider-sense which i find interesting
I had to rewatch this to compare this Peter Parker to the remastered version. I prefer this mature looking Peter than the Tom Holland look alike.
The graphics look so much better on ps5 that it makes up for the new face
He looks more like Andrew Garfield tbh

Sensational.
Homecoming's version of Vulture was really cool. I trust the MCU with Spideys villains..*Begins sobbing uncontrollably*
Well spidey is not anymore part of MCU
16:31 The first time Otto shouted and snapped at Peter like that...that gave me some chills. The voice actor for Otto is incredible.
36:00 The way Otto's voice actor shouts... Goosebumps... This is way better than any movie out there.
And surprise! It's William Salyers.
This game gave Spider-Man a huge amount respect for how strong he actually is
15:18 The moment the good Doctor put claws and big ass spikes on the arms should have been HUGE red flags for Peter.
Soulkey sbr honestly! Peter should’ve been like “Oh... Those are pointy...”
I'm sure he kind of thought something was wrong. I mean look at his face.
I mean the way Peter reacted in that scene seemed like it did
36:43
Actually the devs thought of that and during the lab scenes you can see the arm development progress from human to tentacle with notes saying they will be able to take different shapes. Great attention to deal
Even at the very start of this video, you can see that the tubes that Otto is connected to resemble the placement of his future tentacles. That combined with the shot of the prosthetic arm extending out like a tentacle is god-tier foreshadowing, and makes me love this game even more than I already do.
