      Kent Diamond shot #6, 12 ga 2.75 inch,1.25 oz at 1330 fps. There are 280 pellets and there's plenty of punch at 35-40 yds. PLUS they don't rattle your dentures!

      Winchester Longbeard XR #5 3.5 inch. Don't know if you would consider it a budget load at just under $3 a shot but still a lot cheaper than the crazy priced TSS.

    Im glad that you are trying and producing content. Its fun. Heck i done it way before social media. But you are shorting yourself and viewers. You need a backing. I ran 42"x48". And drop the shoot-n- see targets. Ive built some nasty economy load guns per customers. All the way up to tungsten loads. It was a hobby. I shot 300+ rounds of 3.5 and 3s per yr for 15yrs. Hey even built some 2 3/4 guns too.
    Fives is a pre 1988 way of shooting. I started my hobby and addiction to turkey patterns at 12yo in 1988. What your shooting today was premium loads then. And just like most ammo companies their formulas have gotten cheaper and prices has went higher. When Wal-Mart sold supremes(black winchester) i use to set in the floor and build boxes. If the shell rattled it didnt go in my box. I got ran out of so many stores. I controlled my end of quality. #6s @1300fps with a tuned 870 will mop a turkey at 60yrds. Ive killed coyotes farther than 60 with #6s.
    If a person is dead set on #4s and #5s i lean towards your over bore guns like SXP, SX2,SX3 and SBE123s your basic waterfowl guns. They held the best uniform patterns for larger shots. The 870 is (imo) the best adaptable gun ever built pre 2000. I had to get away from the punishment and went semi auto. Now im sub guage mode. Yes you pay a little extra but the guns are lighter and it doesnt beat you up.
    If your wanting the cheapest of cheap 30yrd gun build for a 870. Remington 660 jellyhead with remington express 1330#6s aka the green lizard. And have adjustable sights.
    I lost a bet one yr and had to hunt with economy dove loads and a new England with a mod barrel. 2 days and was tagged out.

    "Turkey" Loads IMO is such a Marketing scam. I have taken several Toms With just basic lead #6 #7.5 and even #9 target loads, as well with steel shot. With absolutely no problems dropping them right where they stand. Now with that being said, They all have been within 20 yds. And with a 28 gauge.

    I love the content of your videos. They definitely fill a void that a lot of other TH-cam contet creators miss. That being patterning lead turkey loads out of budget/moderate priced turkey chokes. I also like that you pattern multiple loads out of the same choke tube at the same range, switch tubes, and then do it again.The way I process information is significantly helped by your methodology, which allows me to compare load and choke performance at measured distances (think apples to apples). It is sometimes painful to watch a TH-camr spend 10-15 minutes to pattern a single turkey load out of one single turkey choke tube. I definitely think you are on to something with the amount of valuable information you include in your videos. I would offer a couple of constructive comments that I think could improve your pattern testing: 1) Consider using a wooden pallet set up vertically to staple your targets to. This would be a more stable support method that would keep you from having to tape a target to a cardboard box, which gets blown out after a few shots, plus it is not as susceptible to wind issues. I know in a previous video it looked like some of your shots were striking the ground, so the pallet would allow you to elevate the target higher, thus minimizing the chance some of the shot will strike the ground. 2) Consider using a paper backer between the pallet and target, this way you can get a better idea of how a load actually patterns in the event a particular load that your gun is not sighted in misses the majority of the reactive target. I know it takes extra time to "Sharpie" the pellets that miss the reactive turkey targets so the patte4n is more visible to viewers, but it allows you and the viewer to see how effective a load patterns at a glance, and gives you an idea of where your core pattern is should you decide to change loads and adjust your sights accordingly. 3) Consider adding a 40 yard pattern showdown to maybe your top 2 or 3 loads. While I think your personal maximum range of 35 yards is more realistic, since most birds are harvested within that range, sometimes a hunter who plans on taking a 35 yard max shot may misjudge the distance due to the excitement, and knowing a particular load patterns good at 40 yards allows a hunter the ability to still make a clean ethical kill out to 40 yards. Again, with conventional leadl loads, except Winchester Longbeards, 35-40 yards is probably a good maximum range for most turkey hunters. Another benefit of using a Sharpie to mark pellet strikes on the backer with lead loads, is that you will have to circle a lot less pellet holes than the TH-camrs doing it with #9-10 shot in TSS loads.
    *Another video idea, that won't break the bank, would be to compare several different 2.75 inch field/game/skeet loads in 7.5 shot to see how they patten at say 15 and 25/30 yards. For hunters that hunt in areas with heavy cover that don't offer shots beyond 25-30 yards, these field/skeet loads might be a viable cost effective alternative to high brass dedicated lead turkey loads. I would suspect that the harder shot found in skeet loads, like Winchester AAs, would pattern better than softer lead game loads. Also, with lower velocity field loads, I would think the softer shot in game loads might not deform as bad as lead shot fired in high velocity shells. These are just theories that you could test in such a head to head comparison. I know Winchester actually markets 7.5 lead shot Turkey loads in .410 with a notation on the box that they are not to be used for turkeys beyond 30 yards. I suspect it is because beyond 30 yards 7.5 shot doesn't have the energy necessary to penetrate a turkey's skull/spine. I would definitely love to see a vdeo like that, obviously with the stated caveat that there is a hard distance rule that 7.5 shot loads should not be used beyon 25-30 yards maximum. Some loads might pattern so poorly that a hard max distance might be 15-20 yards. Anyway, please keep up the good work and I am excited to see some more videos.

    You should have included something not typically considered turkey ammo but I've seen them perform excellently out of several guns.
    Federal Prairie Storm. They run similar velocities to long range lead loads designed for upland, like the Remington Express XLR loads, but in a 3" they have 1 5/8oz AND a flite control wadding. They have flite-stopper pellets mixed in that open up the pattern a bit up close while maintaining a flite control assisted hotter core pattern. They also come in 25 Rd boxes.

  • @stevecolombe4446
    @stevecolombe4446 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Honestly any load even light target loads will kill a turkey under 30 yards. I think a 40 yard test should have been done to get a better comparison. The Remington Express loads really weren't a good comparison since there are a lot fewer pellets in that load. I was pretty impressed with the Fiocchi load. I have never tried those loads. You could have presented your results by putting the targets side by side in order to do a visual comparison. Some of the guns that we use for turkey hunting pattern best with the Remington Nitro. The majority pattern best with the Winchester Longbeard XR. The cheap Winchester loads do shoot really good for the price you pay. All the loads we use are #5s. I would never waste my money on the TSS loads.

      Have you tried the Winchester Longbeard XR 3.5? That is the load that I like best in #5 and you can get it for less than $3 a pop which isn't too bad compared to the insanely expensive loads. I once killed a Tom at 72 yards by accident. I had no idea it was that far because it was a weedy field and I couldn't get a reading with my range finder. I thought it was about a 50 yard shot. It dropped him deader than a doornail.

    Great Video. The Jelly Head definitely outperformed the Carlson & I was impressed by the Fiocchi shells but the 3 inch Winchester #5 was to me the most impressive especially at 30 yards. I am 63 & 98% of my Turkey kills have been less than 30 yards as I enjoy get those Ol’Toms in close. But may I humbly request something? The Remington Express is a phenomenal shotgun for all hunting purposes but please try the exact same choke out of a Mossberg 500. Their factory extended choke is as impressive. Thanks for a HONEST upfront comparison & staying in the yardage that most Turkey Hunting should be. And also showing one does not have to spend ridiculous amount of money on TSS which can cost up to 18 to 20 dollars a shell. NO THANKS!!

      @@hunTN615 If I may say something. The Maverick 88 is the “budget” version of the Mossberg 500. The only difference between the 2 is that the Maverick 88 has the safety on the trigger guard. Barrels, chokes, & just about everything else will interchange. Made by Mossberg in Texas. I have been shooting one over 20 years & not ONE time has it ever failed me. The shotgun is totally black & comes with only one choke (modified) but any choke that will fit the 500 will work perfectly in the 88. And one can buy the 88 for around 180.00 used, around 230 brand new. You will be surprised at the value & performance from the 88. And check out the reviews here on TH-cam.

      It was getting hard to find ammo a while back so I bought a box of 25 shells to try - Browning BDX, 3", 1 5/8 oz., #5 shot at 1350 fps. Even though they market them as an upland/pheasant load, it's really just like many turkey loads out there (at higher velocity).
