I'm still recovering from the fact that we almost had a driveable Scarab mission in Reach.
It is drivable in mods
Niles Sankey is here. Me: "Cool!"
Laper Larden's in the video. Me: "OH, HELL YEAH"
"There were sooo many Halo fans working on Halo 2 and 3"
"They should have hired people who hated Halo"
LMFAO
Small thing, but “one night a bunch of us went out for drinks to talk about work…just drinking and having a good time and talking this idea up”
i think this sort of stuff is nearly impossible with the huge bureaucracy 343 created
The gutting of destiny is the most tragic things in gaming history and no one talks about it
no one cares about destiny
Destiny is a nothing-game, not unlike League of Legends. It's technically one of the most successful games of all time but its cultural impact on the gaming sphere is vanishingly small (compared to something like, say, Counter Strike) and all the talk of it online consists of nothing but hatred, confusion, and soyjakkery. Everyone knows the Halo theme, name one song from Destiny. It's like how Avatar was the highest grossing movie of all time and no one remembers a single line from it
@@paegr A) that’s my point: before Joe Staten left, Destiny was something totally different and absolutely had a chance at being a landmark title like halo, but then it’s story, missions, design, etc was all gutted.
B) The Path, Tranquility, Remembrance, The Union, Deconstruction, The Hope, Deep Stone Lullaby.
That’s 7 amazing tracks from Destiny. Sure they don’t have the worldwide household recognition of the halo ring monk theme, excruciatingly very few songs ever earn that reputation, but within the destiny community or Martin O Donnel fanbase these are amazing and beloved songs
"It's like how Avatar was the highest grossing movie of all time and no one remembers a single line from it"
😂
Destiny gives off so many vibes of what-could-have-been. The unused cutscenes we saw prerelease. The grimoire lore. Music of the Spheres. The game environment itself, just reeks of unexplored depths.
Hearing in this interview how his earlier impression was an Elder Scrolls esque, more open world to explore, gels a LOT with all those feelings and vibes. Far more than what we got did.
Fucking corporate shitswills.
Love this, hearing an actual guy who worked on the classics is cool
I recently met an Australian for the first time.
You guys are cool. Way better than Brits
Reported, racism... Yeah it's a pretty outdated look my fair incel...
Lol I am an Aussie and I think if you can confidently discriminate an entire population because of a hand few you have seen then I think YOU are the problem there 🤣🤣
@@sovkhan4359 I’m sorry you can’t take a mild tongue and cheek joke 😢
Other than the Irish, there's no one more like Brits than Australians
Must... Consume.. Must.. Form identity around dead franchise..
so real

So true my fellow helldivers 2 stellar blade chad. Old games are bad because they are for chuds.
I just simply love when the elites said “wot wot wot”. It has inspired through the years.
this channel is a gem
Thanks to you and to Mr. Sankey for sharing his perspective. Halo 3 was a marvel and so was Destiny in it's own especially special way.
I really enjoyed listening to this conversation. It was great to hear about the hows and whys and the what-could-have-beens from the perspective of somebody who knew what he was there for and sadly at the end, knew that it was time to scoot on. Grateful that you guys went and worked on getting this out here.
Monolith is such a bangin company. Blood is one of my favorite games.
Really wasnt expecting that.
Thank you so much for spending the time and recording all this 😊
Wild they had 2 teams building 2 unrelated games simultaneously that can be called "monoliths genre defining first person supernatural horror." One set a level for AI with their 3 state goal system and the other has some of the best fps melee combat implementation.
@@Ashamedofmypast and both have such distinctive vibes and condemned felt way too ahead of its time
@@christiangottsacker6932 it's also crazy to realise both games were killed by having sequels that didn't understand what made the first games good. A condemned remake has so much potential. Not one for the remake trend but that game is actually a good fit.
@Ashamedofmypast I agree with these words. Same happened to blood 2 as well
@@christiangottsacker6932 yup
Wow an actual interview that isn't stroking the guest's massive ego and interjecting (derailing) the convo for the entire 1 hour 56 minutes. nice
Really cool portion about the early days of Destiny. Thanks for this!
This is great! Love hearing stuff from the guys who worked on these games during the Bungie era.
I still firmly believe that The Covenant is the greatest Halo mission ever made, there's a few others that are great in other ways such as 343 Guilty Spark, but in terms of variety and sheer scale nothing else in the series comes close to The Covenant.
13:11 if I'm right about this, the bug He is referring to is a crash bug I have actually managed to work around.
Basically the new overlay group system reach uses screws up when a buckled . Giant tries using any kind of overlay. So I had to prevent the buckled animations from using any overlays
This is probably correct. The animation system changes were designed to allow the AI characters (e.g. Spartans) to animate their feet/legs when rotating. At least this is how I remember it.
Too bad you didn't work at Bungie when we made Reach 😄 Maybe we would have shipped that 'drivable Scarab' mission.
@@niles6159 yeah what a shame xD.
Btw if you happen to know anything else, be sure to let the community know, I wonder if you know anything about the Covenant Siege Engine.
@@niles6159 sad Reach a has lots of downgrades for its AI behavior compared to halo 3 one, like object interaction and suppressing fire
Man, what a great interview. It's still heartbreaking to hear a lot of the "almosts" of Halo, especially 3 and Reach.
On that note, I've seen the video Niles mentions about the cut content from Reach, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. It's a shame because it really illustrates what they wanted to do with that game with scale.
Edit: Found it! th-cam.com/video/b5tJfoR8nqI/w-d-xo.html
bungie halo will always be a gem
Incredible!
Interview Jason Jones next.
If only
Hmmm maybe he has a better chance with Martin O'Donnell, Marcus Lehto, or Jamie Griesemer? Joseph Staten?
Jason hates being in the public eye at all. I'm sure we all have a flood of questions to ask him that will never be answered.
Where’s Covenant Canon? I bet he’d really enjoy this interview.
Good content
thank you
bungie did actually make the player "deathless" in halo 2 when you go down those tunnels on the sentinel wall level.
I love niles sankey :)
Halo 3 I used to flipping love that game
Hay ShreddedNerd, have you seen Narrative Arcade,s video on "Why No One Knows How to Adapt Halo for Screen"?
