I absolutely hate when i have to skate thru some rough or uneven asphalt. hard wheels always vibrated my feet and legs to the point it just hurt. I grew up skating in the ghetto on neglected sidewalks and roads. A few years ago i bought 2 sets of Ricta Clouds, i think they were 78a and 86a, one is deff softer than the other. YOOOO these wheels be the smoothest i ever rode in my life. I use the softer ones for cruisin and traveling and whatnot i use the others for the park and transition. Life changing, man. Theyre soft enough to go over pebbles and cracks with ease, but i can still bang out tricks and do reverts or powerslide. and the flatspots are at a minimum!!! Big shout outs to Ricta yo, these wheels are amazing!!! I recommend them to anyone who is tender footed like me and suffers from those rough street vibrations.

Always carry around a "T" tool in your bag and different wheels...then you can swap wheels depending on where you skate. Maybe you want to bomb some hills or skate on the road, then swap to your big soft wheels like the fishboards have...if you want to skate a park then pull out the hard wheels. Best advice though is roads are not smooth so you need those big ol soft wheels like fishboards have if you're bombing hills

Softer wheels are nice for street skating in the UK cause we have pretty much no smooth pavements
I used to skate 50mm wheels that were more skinny but I recently got into spitfire 54mm conicals. I go back and forth between both. But my favorite wheel is the bones v3 stf

I already skateboard but been interested in buying roller skates. I have actually been learning this all recently through researching roller skates. Great video.
Blading and rollerskating is fun. I would recommend blading for the versatility though. Grab a pair of aggressive inline skates from Razors, THEM, USD, or Mesmer ; )

One (very) minor comment about wheel logos being inside or outside: if you turn them in & want to get same-for-same some other day, it does make it easier to find out what they are (vs digging out receipts or emails or whatever). Now, this is less important to the Braille crew with access to 1000s of wheels and probably not even worth mentioning to most of Braille's followers bc you skate hard & get new kits as often as needed. But if you're OG like me (Old Guy. That's literally all I'm saying here.) and grew up attending Savannah Slamma in 1987, then you're 1) old as dirt and 2) really probably don't ride that much these days, yet maybe you still support skating (fully in spite of reason no. 1, ahem). And when you're trying to replace dang-near 25-yr old Spitfires, it's nice to see "56mm / 99A" clearly labeled... and yes, withOUT your reading glasses lmao. 👓🙄🤔🤷♂️
Great video 🤙 This helped understand why often times in the videos you guys are so nitpicky about Walmart and Amazon completes. Learning to notice these small details and identify their importance is great for new skaters such as myself in order to be comfortable and confident skating

surely I do understand this system of Durameter fully, but only because I wanted it badly to get a grip on it. George Powell gave the needed hints. because he actually reinvented the B scale (right scale to meassure the real hardness) to expand the wideness with his Bones wheels.
Square wheels locks in grinds better 🙏🏻 especially on round rails! Hard wheels also make nose and tail slides slide better.

Kinda glossed over the wheel shape. The size of the contact patch plays an important roll in stability and how grippy a wheel feels, and the more squared-off wheels lock into rails better. You also may feel a difference in your flips tricks going from something like Spitfire Classics to Spitfire Tablets, as the "roll-over" factor is different between edges. I really like the 53mm Spitfire Conical Full.

FYI, The shape of the wheel also helps lock in on grinds. ;)
I skate parks and downhill so my wheels are 63x52w at 90a. The bigger wider wheel lets me feel stable at high speeds but the hardness allows me to have controlled slides when i want as well.

A small tip. For all the street skaters.. If you want your wheels to last just buy a size bigger n shred it into a smaller size
i really like hard wheels but my joints hurt a lot very fast because i am kinda old now, but i cant stop because it just feels like home.

I grew up in NYC New York and 55 mm were standard to start.
I rode street all my life but I always wanted to skate transitions so whenever I could I rode them. For that reason 56 mm and 55 became my go to. I got used to the bigger wheels and I can skate street as well.
Just my 2 cents.
Oh and 1 last thing I love 99 A but I will ride 97 on transitions if I can. It won’t bother me if I have 99,s on I’m not gonna switch em out mid sesh but if I know I’m going to skate a pool or park I’ll try to go softer.
In what situation to use the 64mm g bones wheels?
I recently discovered mini logo wide cut 95a. They are soft and quiet but slide surprisingly well. A bit of the best of both worlds. They are really cheap too. 19$

I need large grippy wheels since there's times i hit 12mph on a turn crusing on my longboard. Its more scary in the rain but as long if i dont do any sudden turns, i know i wont slip out (83A 70mm but probably 68 after 10 months of riding) With people who do hillbombs and sliding on longboards, shape and core type can be important factors for grip, initiating a slide easier, and wear pattern.
Pretty much the opposite of what they said about hardness is actually the truth. Street wheels are usually softer because the ground is rougher. Sure hard 101a is fine for smooth street but 97a-99a is better for rougher street sections because they help cut down on vibration. Transition wheels such as JD's 60mm Powerflex Rock Candy wheels are 84b and convert to about 104a. Along with Bones SPF also 84b wheels are the hardest wheels made. You want larger hard wheels on transition because they make pumping for speed easier so you don't get tired as fast. Larger hard wheels roll faster.

PS I’m a an airplane mechanic and it seems that axles on trucks are slightly CANTED . They are not perfectly straight. I have measured them over and over I thought I was getting bad product.
Seems that it might help with turning but it wears your wheels unevenly, so hi rotate my wheels like my truck. That way they were evenly and maybe flipping them will help you so one day you wear the graphics and next month you wear blank side it will keep your wheels from wearing unevenly and getting bad habits in your skating.

Depends on how loose you like your trucks. If you ride super loose with 56>, you might get wheel bite and in that case you would want some. That's just my personal experience

Ok, The B-scale is pretty much like the A-scale, just slid 20 points down. So if a wheel is 80b it would be 100a on the A-scale. This has to do with the actual instruments they use to measure duromenter(called, simply enough, a Durometer). The A-scale goes from 0 to 100 like all durometer scales. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A 101a WHEEL. That is marketing talk. When you get up in to the hard ranges of polyurethane that wheels use, the A-scale durometer isn't as precise as it would be measuring the softer compounds. Anything over 96a or so is really a guesstimate using A-scale. Your "101a" wheels could be anywhere from 98a to a theoretical 103a(most companies have tighter tolerances than this but it can happen). The B-scale reads more accurately in the range where most want a wheel to be. So a wheel that would truly feel like the mythical 101a would be an 81b.
Vert and transition riders like a large wheel because they do not lose momentum as quickly as a small wheel does. Small wheels will get up to speed quicker but will also lose that speed sooner. Large wheels start slower but stay fast longer. Grip and control is secondary. A lot of vert people ride 99a and "101a" wheels. Bones SPFs are 83b which would feel like a "103a" wheel.

Forgot to say if it wears down to one side you can flip wheel to wear it down the other way and makes it normal again.. but if you really like your wheel size just get new ones lol
So, they kinda skimmed over the shape of the wheel too quickly because the shape has a lot to do with how grind tricks lock in/or don't. Round edge wheels roll in and out of grinds easier and straight edged wheels lock in more which both can either help you or hinder you with the particular grind trick you're doing.

I would've liked to have a bit move conversation and info about the wheel width and surface area. I think it is one of the three main points when choosing wheels: Height, Width/Roundness, Hardness. At least for me wider wheels feel way more stable in larger speeds and it's much more easy to roll over cracks and curfs. Also it changes the board balance a lot, e.g. when flipping the board. One important topic would also be the wheel placement and truck size that is related to wheel size. I really would like to have a bit more deep conversation as the points mentioned in the video are the same ones you can find in hundreds of other wheel tutorials, even from braille.
As a recommendation I would suggest everyone to watch Andy Anderson talk about the wheels. He has some very interesting points and a very scientific approach.
Yeah, they could've gone more into shape (and how it affects flips and lock-in), contact patch, wheel bite, etc. But most of their viewers don't skate or are just starting, so I think it'd be over their heads.

Hard wheel on street? I don't agree. Too rocky, many more cracks to screw you up. Softer wheels on street is ideal. Hard wheels are for smooth skatepark and tennis courts. As a beginner this has been my experience. So I have both Hard and soft wheels I switch out depending on the terrain.
