As a Vancouver Island resident, I can say you are doing a great job of reflecting what living here is all about....warts and all. Appreciate you getting off the Island Highway and into the backroads.

Hi Gazza. I live in Georgia and am originally from Central Illinois. My son lives in Everett, Wa. I did a motorcycle trip in 2016 to the Seattle area, where my son and I camped on the Olympic Peninsula. I didn't venture to Vancouver Island that time, but will one day soon, as I have plans to make another trip there soon, to celebrate the July 4th holiday with my son and new daughter-in-law. Currently I ride a Yamaha FJR1300a but am considering an ADV bike. I really enjoy Sterling's eye and perspectives of adventure.
The northwest is an area that everyone should see at least once in their lifetime. Sterling makes a meager traveling existence something that we can all appreciate. Adventure lives in the soul.

Your Laundry shot reminded me of a "Dad" story. We were hand trolling for salmon near Excursion Inlet, SE Alaska. We stopped at the cannery to shower and wash clothes. We didn't have many clothes with us, so Dad walked up to the laundry room and threw his clothes in a washer, along with the clothes he was wearing. He was sitting naked in a plastic chair, waiting for the washer/dryer to get done when a local woman walked in (Dad thought it was a "mens room only". Needless to say Dad was embarrassed as they shared the facility That was about 1978.

Sterling, like you I love travelling on my motorbike and have often thought about recording some of it. Having worked in television most of my professional life, I understand the process involved in filming a ride, especially if you want more than just the GoPro vision from your helmet. Your video today highlights just how much work is involved. That sequence you began with, setting up the camera to get the front on shot and putting the drone in the air covered just 37-seconds of your 14-minute story. I admire your dedication to producing such high quality and professional videos; you standout in the TH-cam world.

I visited Port Hardy for work nearly 20 years ago. Was February but no snow on the ground. I learned that temperatures stayed pretty constant through the year. Beautiful little town. And yea, “the lake” is short hand for any lake in Canada. If you want more roads like those, come to Ontario and Québec. They go on forever!

It’s insane how much work you have to put into literally every shot. I’m an amateur photographer and have a sense as what goes into these gorgeous scenes, but doing this solo is next level. The setting up, walking back, putting away, downloading files, backing up, clearing cards, trying to keep multiple devices charged only while the engine is running and all while dealing with dust or rain must be absolutely exhausting. I’m in BC and was planning to do the North Island 1000 this summer, but I want to enjoy myself and will not try to attempt what you look make look so effortless so I can enjoy myself 😂

Hey Sterling, It looks like you were finally able to tap into the wonder that is Vancouver Island. Your ORBDR video made it debut, and it is terrific. As always! My other thought was that you must have been exhausted as you resumed your AZ to BC trip, which may account for some of the lows you were experiencing. Folks image that when we’re on a vacation, or even a grand adventure like yours, that every day is to be a positive experience. Not so. Even amid the freedom of being on the open road, we are all vulnerable to “travelers fatigue”, and in your case, adding in the rigors of documenting as much as you can with video, not to mention 3 exhausting weeks of physical riding in Oregon, you need some down time to recover. I’d urge you to put the cameras away for a couple of days, get some sleep and find a place to stay put and recover... get laundry done, sleep a bit more, let your body rest, and you mind refocus on the spirit of adventure that you’re seeking. You deserve that. I hope perhaps Bella Coola offers you such a place before you begin the next phase of your AZ to BC adventure. You inspire us all with your documentaries, but you need to take care of yourself. Happy trails. AD

I am following u from Thailand and I have a couple of bikes, one a sport cruiser the other a small ADV. I have recently returned from Laos and Vietnam(now covid is over and the borders have opened). Your hotel prices are horrendous, but that last camp ground was amazing value in comparison. Over here I only use hotels or home stays, mostly not more than 30 dollars US mostly much less. Road side small noodle shops and restaurants are also cheaper, but everything is relative, and that is why I came to live here, being originally from the uk. Your videos are excellent and I much admire your perseverance in getting it right and not giving up.

Next time you get stuck in that sand use Bill Dragoo’s method for sand and you would easily get out. Put the bike in second and straddle the bike. Get the RPMs up around 2k and rock the bike back and forth. On the forward rock drop the clutch (do NOT feather it) the bike will start moving. Once you are up on top adjust your speed and ride off.
