I don’t know how to word it but the sadness I feel at the end of this is a kind of emotion I’ve never experienced in any other film that I can think of

Even though it's a very controversial movie "blue is the warmest color/la vie d'adele" made me feel a deeper sadness and overall depression that lasted weeks

For me, the ending felt like the TRUEST version of an "emotional gut punch" (and I mean that in the best way possible)

I forgot to mention that the director of this film dated the actress that played Heloise - they had broken up before making this movie, which adds another beautiful, personal layer to the story.

She also wrote this movie for her, which took 5 years

This movie is an absolute masterpiece. I really enjoyed watching you watching it in real time, as ineloquent as that is. Agree; I watched it first years ago and it never leaves me.

What a nice surprise this is! One of my favorite movies of all time. I love how the only music in the movie is diagetic, no score. Makes the final scene that much more impactful!

I have a friend who saw this in Paris, and more than once people in the audience stood up and cheered

The best distinction from many films about lesbians is that this is directed by a woman and how they portray the feminine gaze. The stares are not directed at sexual or sexualized body parts by something more intimate like a smile, eyes, hands. I forget but there is a TH-cam video about this film that addresses this distinction. It is a beautiful film that somehow was snubbed from the international film category at the Oscars. To think there are people out there actively regressing women’s rights and LGBTQIA+ rights today.

I honestly can’t understand it. I never will.

Absolutely. Contrast this with something like Blue is the Warmest Colour.

@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 I think the French critics found it not erotic enough for them and didn’t recommend it to be recommended for the Oscar

You exhaling when they kissed for the first time - and the times after - is my reaction whenever I watch this. there is so much tension bound up in this film, and I feel it every time I watch it, no matter how many _times_ I watch it!! I loved this reaction

if you wonder why the colours in this movie look so vivid, the movie is shot with an 8k camera which means it has a higher resolution than the usual cinema movies which are shot with 2K to 6K cameras

    "Do you recognize it?"
"It (the painting) was waiting for me, when I first came here" the mother said.

The best I have ever seen, the lighting, the cinematography is beyond belief. One could cut a frame out and frame it as a piece of art. Then there is the female gaze issue. Wonderful. This movie is very complex with a lot of issues being covered.

I ❤ this movie ! One of the best I ever saw. The slow rythm, the elegance, the delicacy, the forbidden love make me think to the masterpiece "In The Mood For Love". ... But I think "Portrait" is my prefered one.
Glad you loved it and analysed it so well. I think you'll discover a lot of details if you rewatch it. And love it more and more.

Really excellent reaction, thank you so much! I thoroughly enjoyed how thoughtful and analytic your commentary was at the end, and watching your emotions in response to the storyline was a real privilege - I got the impression that you, like a lot of people who watch this movie for the first time, were completely caught up in the characters' emotional arc. I know I was!
On the off-chance that you haven't ever watched Fight Club, I'd really enjoy watching your reaction to that, particularly if you go in unspoiled. In many ways it's a complete antithesis to Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and I sometimes feel the two films would make one heck of a double bill!

This movie is my movie of the year 2019 (tie with The Lighthouse), and very well be my movie of 2010s.
Too bad the actress played Heloise -blonde main actress (Adele Haenel) has decided to retire from acting :( she want to changed the industry from within but realize she can’t because people still protecting and defensed POS like Polansky even to this day.
