Cinematography, Screenplay, Directing, Music, Acting - it was such a perfect movie. I really wished France submitted this one instead of Les Mis, there could have been a real competition between Parasite and Portrait. Noemie Merlant and Adele Haenel could have been nominated for acting and Portrait in the Picture. I don't know. It was just so perfect.

Great analysis. Another aspect that brought another (sad) element for me, is when the mother describes her own portrait waiting for her when she arrived, - as will Heloise portrait wait for her in Milan. Hence, she will always "see" Marianne on her own wall probably for the rest of her life. Ouch.

I am French and I love this movie. 2019 was an amazing year for international films (not just parasite), hopefully this starts a trend and we start to see more and more non-english language films come award season.

The thing I just noticed is that the last scene listening to the orchestra. Marianne began the ptg from memory & observing her physically. It changes when they open their feelings for each other. Then at the end, Marianne the artist is once again observing Heloise & can see the passion that in memory it seems even more intense. She is watching without Heloise noticing, but she is fulfilled knowing the passion is still there.

I don't know if anyone answered this already as I haven't read the rest of the comments, but apologies if it has. Remember that the movie is basically Marianne's recollection of that period in her life. Since it is her future self talking about the past, the very last image she saw of Héloïse "contaminates" (as Sciamma said in the clip you posted) her recollection. The ghostliness of the image also plays nicely with the story that very scene is echoing: that of Orpheus and Eurydice. The myth ends with the tragic image of Eurydice returning to the Underworld, dying irrevocably.
To answer your question; it is an impossibility to say that this movie is bad.

I think Marianne seeing her in the dress is the memory of Heloise at the end because this is Marianne retelling the story. It’s like cracks in her memory.

I’m loving this analysis. I have a little shity “correction”. The music played at the end and with the piano is a piece of “summer” from Vivaldi’s “4 seasons. I kinda sound pretentious but maybe you wanted to know better? i don’t know (sorry for my english) anyways I love your channel and I freaking LOVE this movie.

And yeah the comparisons with CMBYN are maybe too obvious but the similarities are there, would be stupid to not connect both movies (which, IMO...are both top 10 of the decade)...I would say Portrait goes even deeper, CMBYN it's more a nice and nuanced summer flick to look at (it does help that both protagonists are VERY good looking and have amazing chemistry) Portrait has way more layers and deeper meaning. CMBYN it's a movie that I can watch 100 times without getting tired of BUT Portrait with only one viewing it can stay in my retinue forever.

I like how as far as movies go, we essentially ended the decade with a lot of amazing endings. Portrait, Parasite, Irishman, Pain and Glory, Uncut Gems, Sorry We Missed You, Hollywood... Like goddamn! We were spoiled!

I was defiantly feeling this was more of an 8 movie but the needing it became more of a nine because it reminded a lot of Call Me By Your Name which is one of the best movies of all time imo. But the analysis put a lot of the more minor scenes in a different perspective and made me appreciate it more than just the story and visual style so it’s more like a 10 now.

'the portrait of a lady on fire' doesn’t hold the essence of conventional forbidden love. Neither it attempts to break the stringent definitions of rules and conformity in its course of telling a queer love story with safe equations like rebellion and feminism. The movie paints its protagonists' experience in the process, not their agony after departure. It remains about two individuals, facing each other, slowly falling in love first and realising it later. It depicts crude human desire though the most expressive gaze that a human can have over a person of their interest. While one of them emerges from complete naivety about love to acceptance and acknowledgement; the other travels through an emotional path of formulated observation to an epiphany that "to observe, is to love”. As the writer/director said: "Desire is all about the delay"

I just watched your perspective and I wanted to offer my thoughts on why Marianne sees the white dress thise two times. Remember, the movie starts with Marianne in the classroom with her students and then it moves to her being on the boat heading to paint Heloise. She is recounting this time in her life and therefore is able to interject the white dress into her story.
