"What is that dialogue?" Yup! And the way its delivered too. Based on the 2 Yorgos Lanthimos movies I've seen (this and The Lobster), that's just his style... And I love it. So unique, kind of awkward, humorous, but also ominous.

This movie is so scary but it is not supernatural, and it is not a thriller based in reality. The only way I can describe it is that this movie captures the sense that the GODS have cursed your family, old school vengeful Greek Gods, who punish mortals for their shortcomings.
Colin is not so much being punished for killing the boy's father, as he is being punished for trying to be a half-ass replacement father. He visits with the boy out of guilt because he knows he shouldn't have been drinking. He tries to be a replacement father figure but he does it to satisfy his guilt instead of out of any love for the boy. This is highlighted when he gives the boy his old watch, almost as if saying, sorry I killed your dad while operating on his heart (a heart is called a ticker), so here's a watch to replace that. And really, he just wanted an excuse to buy a new watch.
His relationship with the boy is extremely flawed, and the boy calls him out on it in his own fucked up way. He invites Colin to meet his mother and to enter into a relationship with her. Nobody would stop him. It is the boy's way of saying, well, if you want to be my replacement father, you have to go all the way. You have to come to my house, eat dinner with my family, and get with your new side wife. Obviously, Colin refuses to do this, and that is when the boy's curse comes into play. If Colin is unwilling to replace the dead father, then he will have to sacrifice a family member to pay this debt.

    • @00B.
      @00B. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thank you for this insight. I thought there was something about Colin taking the place of the other guy's father, but I couldn't frame it clearly. At one point during the movie I thought that he wanted the doctor to sacrifice his original family so he could have Colin joining him and his mother (since she tries to seduce him) so he would have a father again, not as a consequential punishment for Colin for being a shallow fatherly figure

I absolutely love how well Yorgos Lanthimos is able to pull of this disturbing yet comedic tone just like he did in The Lobster and in this movie. I felt that the cinematography was very purposeful, there are many shots in the film that leave a lot of space above the characters in the frame. An this could be seen on the film poster.
This movie almost gave me a Stanley Kubrick vibe and that the hospital felt like I was stuck in the overlook hotel again.

On my first watch I had no idea how to feel. I was intrigued more after I learned it's based on a Greek tragedy. The kid is almost like a metaphor, he had a Godly presence to him (like the family's guilty conscience in human form). Almost felt like the family knew they deserved to suffer in some shape, or form. The kid was a reminder of their sins. By the end they paid their debts, and moved on didn't peep a sound. I think they understood the kid (demon, metaphor, whatever the fuck ever) didn't take pleasure in making their life miserable, he was just their reality check. I believe his only purpose was to get them to face their mistake/ pay for their sin. It's a well a made movie that we can interpret in different ways. Very eerie, and mysterious movie similar to Hereditary it sticks with you. This isn't for everyone, but most can appreciate the quality.

Teaching my self how to use the Adobe softwares as well. And yeah there are some a-hole professors out there. One of the students actually asked to see some of his work after he gave a very rude and harsh critique on his script (I'm all for constructive criticism but what he was doing was not constructive) and so the professor showed us. The room was pretty quiet like they were supressing the urge to roast him. Lol. Humility goes a long way and that professor and none.

I have a toooon of stories with me standing up for students who were being attacked by teachers. I despise that with such passion. It’s so difficult to even show your work, it’s such a vulnerable moment and for professors to take advantage of that only to attack..nope. Not acceptable here. Not in universities. Not in real life. And not in this community. We critique with the foundation of improvement, not hatred! Roast that professor! Lmaooo

In a film anything can happen simply because the creator of it makes it happen and there doesn't have to be a rational reason. Actions only have to be consistent with the world created in the film. What power does Martin have to punish Colin Farrel's family? I don't know. Is it just what Yorgos gives his character as an avenging angel/devil? Is he a force to knock Farrel's God-like character off his high horse? Is he an embodiment of karma? Whatever possible explanation the film succeeds because it puts the audience on a knife edge, a kind of spell of discomfort, of growing dread as the implications of what's happening becomes more terrifying. You never have to have answers to a film's mysteries to enjoy it, only the intrigue and provoking of your thoughts to go someplace new and different.

Dude. This movie fucked me up the first time I watched it. I had very similar reactions. Always enjoy your commentary. You're not just watching but also providing insight.
I'm just going to list a few movies I think you'd enjoy, if you haven't seen them already, based on your interest in shot composition and overall cinematography:
*Bladerunner 2049 (some of the most beautiful shots I've ever seen on film)
    *City of God
    *Arrival
    *Mad Max Fury Road

This movie explores humanity in a way I've never seen before. You have this family who all act emotionally detached; as if they are trying to be purely logical, robotic beings. However, the inciting event of the film--when Colin Farrell fails to save the father--betrays his human imperfection. They are then confronted by Martin--a person who perfectly encapsultes cold, indifferent logic; someone with no emotional commitment or humanity to him at all and it absolutely terrifies them and drives them over the edge. They want mercy, but mercy is not driven by logic or reason, so it is impossible. They are put in a position where pure logic, reason, and pragmatism would instantly solve the problem, but because they are emotional humans, they can't handle it. My favorite part by far is the end when Colin Farrell """randomly""" kills his son, but he clearly didn't. He missed the first time, took his mask off, saw where his son was, spun around, but then stopped, pointed directly at him and fired intentionally with perfect precision. It was obviously intentional, but he's trying to create a way for himself to emotionally and delusionally absolve himself of responsibility because he actually can't handle it with any semblance of logic or reason. They can't be what they were pretending to be and it is that very clash between humanity and the embodiment of this cold, logical mindset they projected that crushes them. And they ARE crushed by it because in the final scene, they are too terrified to even approach Martin as he stares, indifferent, seemingly having no comprehension of their emotional fear and resentment. This film is one of few that I would rate a genuine 10/10 regardless of what many others would probably say.

So yeah. First of all You sold out /s
I joke ofc, awesome that You already have a sponsor. This is good man! So. The Mad Greek. So that was different right ? It's the kind of horror that is more nuanced for me. There is more terror in those subdued scenes, where I want to scream WHAT IS HAPPENING?! I discovered watching other movies of Jorgos Lantimos, that he has this calm eye to horrible and surreal scenes. His "Favorite" is a tour the force for the actresses and his most mainstream movie(Olivia Coleman is a treasure). He has a great talk with Marc Maron on WTF. Kinda helps with understanding his "motifs". Oh and Barry Keoghan is going places, we've seen him in "Dunkirk" lately and in "Chernobyl"(in the most fucked up episode), he has something. There is an energy there that works so good. Oh and Colin Farrell! Being subtle and shit.
EDIT And Kidman, wtf is wrong with me, she's awesome too!
    You love to see it.
Definitely You need to watch "Dogtooth" from him, but first I don't know? "Paddington" ? Some Disney? "Daredevil" won't be any more joyful going further.
Right I ramble as I tend to. Gonna watch You try to piece this film together.
    Have great one man!

No worries. So again ramble on:
Yes the awkwardness of "Lobster" is here, same energy, different movie("Lobster" is..something else). The ghost camera in the hospital, kinda made me think of guilt after the killing is following him around ya'know ? He feels it all the time, but in the place of the murder, he feels it more.
And those slow pans, with that music, that creepy eerie music.
I think this is like a trick of playing with our tension. He keeps everything bottled up. He keeps shots going, whenever there is a emotional, he'll get almost scientific in the shots. It felt like he plays with not giving us a release ? Even in the end. Just a dinner, he Sopranoed it so to speak
Oh! Saw Your site! Those pictures are amazing, kinda some remind me of French surrealist Rene Magritte. Gonna check the videos next.
Oh and "Akira" is awesome, great idea having a guest.
