National Anthem: Iceland - Lofsöngur [NEW VERSION]

- Much like the United States anthem, the Icelandic national anthem was originally written for a particular occasion and it probably did not occur to either the poet or the composer that the song was destined to become a national anthem.
In Iceland, nation-wide celebrations were held throughout 1874 to mark the 1000th anniversary of the first Norse settlement of the island. (This is the “Iceland’s thousand years” that are referenced in the anthem.) To mark the occassion, the Bishop of Iceland decreed that church services on August 2 of that year were to be held based on the anniversary, and the text to be presented was Psalm 90. The Rev. Matthías Jochumsson then decided to write a poem based on the Biblical text and the millennial anniversary. While abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland, he met up with Sveinbjörn Sveinbjörnsson, who Jochumsson asked to compose music for his poem.

100th generation? First settlers arrived in Iceland around 30-40 generations ago, so that just doesn’t exist.
I’m quarter icelandic. The rest is norwegian AND sone finish. I was raised in Norway, but will always have some Icelandic in my heart and soul

Thats because the residents were came from a same group of settlers whom.have genetic similarities, and they loked after each other and that is why Iceland is the most peaceful country in world, followed the country who have peaceful coexistance between native Maoris and Europeans.

Even though I haven't been to Iceland yet (I'll definitely go there one day), Iceland has always had a special place in my heart. Iceland was the first country to recognise my country, Estonia, after it regained independence from the USSR. And this national anthem is a pure masterpiece! I always feel touched when I listen to this anthem, no matter how much I listen to it.
