That was a way not just to encourage people to go fight the Austrians, but also to stand against the monarchy and its principles.

It wasn't written about the revolution though: It was written as "War song for the Rhein Army" during the war between France and Austria... TH-cam should strike this anthem for "inciting racial hatred and violence". And I know what I'm talking about: I'm french and german and I prefer, by extremely far, the german anthem
someone should have told Roomie that the french anthem was written during the french revolution/ Napoleon wars. It's a marching song because all European countries were at war footing with them. Makes it a lot more logical
I'm French I was feeling offended by Joel😂😂😭of course when you know the meaning behind those lyrics, you enjoy as much as you can the French anthem but when you don't know the meaning well...you have Joel's reaction😂😭 Anyway, the French anthem is BEAUTIFUL 😍
I'm not French, but everyone should know that the French anthem lyrics go back to the French Revolution, so it's completely normal that it talks about blood and death, it is a call to arms.
"yes" and at the same time "no" not necessarily about: "but everyone should know that the French anthem lyrics go back to the French Revolution" Read this pls, It was for RoomieOfficiale : F000 Y00 RoomieOfficial YOU ABSOLOTLY DON'T WHAT THIS LYRICS MEANS FOR US. And you put 2/11 ?!!!!!! WTF I am French and proud of it, RoomieOfficiale ABSOLUTELY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE WORDS MEAN TO PUT SUCH A DEGRADING NOTE TO MY COUNTRY AND I'M AMAZED THAT YOU DID THIS. The anthem was created to express all the suffering that my France has undergone because of the monarchies of the kings, the social inequalities and the barbaric killing that took place in my country. There were many problems and millions and millions of deaths and it was like that all the time before. My country was suffering a lot from the inside because of the almighty and at the same time because of those from the outside. We had the worst sufferings in the world and many other countries had it too, we were humiliated, weakened both physically and psychologically, trampled and betrayed too, yes all that. But the worst of all were the NAZIES and that's why we lost the whole northern half of the country and especially the capital Paris. The NAZIES had even put their symbol on the Eiffel Tower to express the total domination of my country which almost belonged to Hitler's Germany. Just like Russia (USSR), France suffered more than any other country in the world because of the NAZIES, especially in the domination. Only Russia can understand us about the danger of the NAZIES of Germany and even the USA helped us because they knew that if France lost, the USA would lose too. The "Marseillaise" is a song that encourages all the French people not to let themselves be done against the enemy and to REVOLVE that in spite of all the sufferings, we will always get up again and that we never give up. And even if the enemy dominates us, we will fight until the end and if we have to die to do so, this is our determination and our will. We will never fail. So if for you RoomieOfficiale the words of the anthem of my country shock you, well it proves that you have never suffered in your life and that you do not know the TRUE SUFFERING. And France proves through this song, even if we lose battles, we NEVER lose the war and that we will do everything to go to victory even if we have to die for it.
France's anthem has a deeper meaning than just blood and slaughter. Our soldiers knew they were marching to certain death when they sang it during the war. It conveys their fear of death but their determination to fight. Its lyrics are gruesome but so is history. France never forgets its soldiers
@Merry Poet As did every soldier. Every country has bathed in bloodshed and injustly killed. My country is no exception and neither are the others. However I refuse to accept that you look down on men who fought on the orders of their ruler and died on the battlefield. The dead deserve respect, no matter what they once dis.
I mean, knowing what I know of French history, the anthem makes sense: they did have to go through a lot of bloodshed to get where they are now. But Christ, that's dark for a national anthem.
Not to say your point is not good but national anthems are supposed to remind people of the great things their freedom fighters have done for their nation so I think the lyrics are appropriate, but I do have to think if the children would be ok. Maybe because they learnt abt the national anthem after the history lesson abt the French revolution. Sorry for dragging this out XD.
@@shawnathonalways honestly (i'm French), I couldn't remember when I first learned it but I'm pretty sure I was quite young and even tho at that time I probably didn't understand everything I was already aware of what happened during the French revolution
Well honestly what do you expect from an anthem written about the Revolution ? For example the bloody banner part is most likely a reference to a painting called "la liberté guidant le peuple" where a woman is seen waving the french flag over a pile of bodies killed during the fights of the revolution, the flag isn't actually bloody in the painting so maybe they just wanted to make it more epic or it's just symbolic like the flag is bloody because it represents a country that's wounded and torn apart by the revolution.
@@imnota As French. You're totally correct. That woman you mentionned is Marianne more like she's the Motherland of France. I believe some are misunderstanding what Joel was doing in this video. Of course, most all of us hold a significant sentiment in regards to our respective countries' national anthems. Each country's anthem means something to its people - historically & culturally - and I know Joel has respect for that. However, I don't believe he was rating anthems based upon their cultural or national significance or their historical value. He was rating them musically, as songs, just as he does in all his other videos. I don't think he would dare judge based on these deeper meanings, it would be quite offensive to a lot of people, as how could he judge them in such a way, really?
Exactly what I was thinking, why are there 1k dislikes, he was just sharing his opinion right? People cant take constructive criticism, smh 🤦🏽♂️ He also did it in a respectful manner and rated them musically and not by their meaning or other stuff -_-
arnt u supposed to be mean lol jokes aside yeah ppl should get that he is just rating them based on how good they are musically not because of their deeper meaning that he doesnt even know
@@wolfbad512 LOL it makes me happy someone remembers that comment. Yes I am actually the meanest person in the entire world 😉💚 But yes, I completely agree with you. I would think it would be common sense to understand that Joel is rating these songs based on their music & not their deeper intrinsic meaning
I agree with you, but in what the French Anthem concerns, he was judging the lyrics not musically. And, as I said previously, I'm not even French or lived there!

2 Comments: 1) You mentioned that anthems are their own genre. When looking at national anthems, a lot can be divided into 2 categories: Marching Songs or Hymns. 2) The Anthem of the Soviet Union was so popular that when the Soviet Union was replaced with the Russian Federation, despite the government wanting to change the anthem to distance themselves from the Soviet Union, most people knew the old anthem and it ended up not being changed (I think they changed some of the words).
We also stole their drinking song to make the star spangled banner...and we took god save the queen to make my country it’s of thee....a lot of our patriotic songs are just to shit on Britain and I’m totally here for it
@@matthewewing9066 it was still a war against Britain because Britain had control over the land at that time as Canada wasn’t founded till later and it ended in a draw.
Not exaclty : the French anthem was written in 1793 as a military song when the new founded Republic had to defend itself against the attack of the neighbouring monarchies (that felt threatened by the Revolution). It's kinda funny how everyone, including the French people, mostly know the first and bloodiest verse. Joël doesn't need to feel threatened, the rest is about the love for liberty and for the Country, about the necessity to defend our families and how all the peoples of different nations are brothers and victims of the monarchs' politics who wage wars and sacrifice their own people for their personal power.

:
F000 Y00 RoomieOfficial
YOU ABSOLOTLY DON'T WHAT THIS LYRICS MEANS FOR US. And you put 2/11 ?!!!!!! WTF
I am French and proud of it, RoomieOfficiale ABSOLUTELY DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE WORDS MEAN TO PUT SUCH A DEGRADING NOTE TO MY COUNTRY AND I'M AMAZED THAT YOU DID THIS.
It is unrespectful. All country have their best national athems.
France's anthem has a deeper meaning than just blood and slaughter. Our soldiers knew they were marching to certain death when they sang it during the war. It conveys their fear of death but their determination to fight. Its lyrics are gruesome but so is history. France never forgets its soldiers
Thanks dude
@Merry Poet As did every soldier. Every country has bathed in bloodshed and injustly killed. My country is no exception and neither are the others. However I refuse to accept that you look down on men who fought on the orders of their ruler and died on the battlefield. The dead deserve respect, no matter what they once dis.

People cant take constructive criticism, smh 🤦🏽♂️
He also did it in a respectful manner and rated them musically and not by their meaning or other stuff -_-
