    Chains probably most efficient, but messy and lots of maintenance. Belts cleaner and last a long time, but if a stick, stones, or even a lot of mud gets thrown up into one, it'll break. Great if totally enclosed. I used to have a V65 Magna with a shaft drive. The most care free riding I ever did. If I could buy a new one today, I would. That v4 engine rocked.

    They may be less efficient but I would always pick a shaft drive bike over chain any day, used to have a cb500 went through chains and sprocket every 14-16000, been running a st1300 since 2003 , oil change in the wheel every major , regular maintenance on the bike 100,3000 miles later zero. Issues it just goes and goes and goes I love it where’s my friend runs a 11kw zero sr and has had 3 belts in 40,000 miles speed bumps , pot holes , belts are not ev bike friendly that’s for sure

    So I am driving a 1982 Honda GL 500 silver wing and the driveshaft has for lack of a better term a big spring at one end and I was wondering what your opinion of that is I can only assume it is to take up the shock when shifting gears

    Is it safe to change the 17.5” rear shock on my ‘84 Honda SABRE Vf700s, to a 13” rear shock from a 1200 sportster? Will it affect the driveshaft?

    • @hasanraza4650

      Not a big deal. 17.5 is too long sometimes. 13" is the standard size for a rear shock.

    Will you please make a video on how to convert from driveshaft to change Drive? Apparently there are no videos anywhere on it which is kind of mind-boggling considering you lose 20% or more of the power to the back wheel with shaft drive as opposed to only 3% with a chain. By doing this procedure you can increase your power to your back wheel from anywhere from about 20 to 30%. Would make one hell of a video!

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the delay Ob1! I will try to put a video out on this, but it will be hard to do without having a bike that I want to convert hahaha. I usually tell people if they want the power and want a chain drive to just get a chain driven bike, the process of converting from a shaft to a chain can be a pain in the ass. If the rider is a good mechanic it's not too bad, but most of my viewers will not want to attempt it hahaha.
      That being said I will put it on the list, and I will try to make this video!

  • @kennyrwine
    @kennyrwine 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ive got an 04 vstar 1100. Runs great, but i started hearing a rattling from the drive shaft area where it connects to the rear motor. It turns out, the outer pipe that covers/incases the actual drive shaft itself has come loose. So now the pipe just rattles as the drive shaft turns. How easy is this to fix? Anyone...?

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For someone who is mechanically inclined it's not too much of a nightmare, you'll have to determine if the stock shaft tube can be re-attached or re-secured or if youll need a new one. If you can get your hands on the service manual and you're comfortable working on your bike you SHOULD be able to do this yourself, if not then it should not be an expensive job for a decent motorcycle mechanic...assuming they can get a replacement tube IF it's even needed.

    Chain vs Belt vs Driveshaft. In rear wheel lock up failure situations?

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I have had a really, really bad chain fail me before, but I have honestly never had a belt or drive shaft lock up a rear wheel. I think in a rear wheel lock up failure there is usually going to be a massive maintenance issue involved, but even when I had a chain fail it didn't lock up the rear wheel, I snapped a link and the chain just fell off the bike hahaha...I would imagine the shaft would be worst in that situation since it is a solid gear/gear device, but like I said I have not experienced that myself.

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most bikes with a shaft have enough flex in the front connection so that they can be lowered, for examply I have seen many vstar 650 models lowered. If you stick with lowering 1-2 inches you SHOULD be ok, so long as your shocks are strong enough to handle your weight so that the reduced clearance doesn't cause an unsafe condition.

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be, to be honest I’ve never seen a suspension swap on that bike so you’d have to refer to specs in the service manual for it to see if they lost the tolerance either direction, if that fails you’ll need the advice of a competent mechanic familiar with that model. I know usually 2 inches won’t kill it, but some bikes don’t have much tolerance for changing that

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      On most motorcycles you can get away with putting the bike in neutral in order to do this, but there are some bikes that will still suffer damage if you don't disconnect. It will depend on the model of motorcycle and the speeds at which you plan to tow, usually just easier to use a small trailer and get both wheels off the ground. But most motorcycles can be towed in neutral without suffering damage.

    • @davidminer879

    • @AlexSimmons11c
      @AlexSimmons11c  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it is possible, but it will be a lot of work to convert, and in that small of a bike the drive shaft will also sap quite a bit of the usable power, which is why most bikes under 650cc or so do not utilize shafts. Most anyway.

    Hi. I'm thinking of buying a bike and I'm between the triumph street scrambler or T100 and the moto guzzi v7 special. for me the guzzi has a strong point that is the transmission by drive shaft besides being air cooled which always reduces the cost of the maintenances. (i think)
    In triumph there is the inconvenience of being drive chain and for me that rides almost every day for work to have to stretch the chain and lubricate from time to time it bores me.
    What do you think about this point?

    I'd like to know the best way to change one to another, like drive shaft to chain. Why? Well I'm making a bike from scratch and the engine I want to use is the VTX1300. Why that one? My budget is limited and I can get one of those for very cheap compared to others

      I would imagine they used the same shaft itself but probably a different rear hub etc., would have to look it up in a Yamaha parts list thought to be sure!

      most motors you might as well swap. the drive parts are built in. you would need extension conversion kits in most big motors

      @burningfeet 53 clearly you don't know how. Apparently you have to split the engine to get it out. Anyway I found a way to fix the shaft without removing it and it has held up fine ever since.

    Chains or belts are ok if they are enclosed. Manufacturers did that years ago, but stopped doing it because it was an added expense in a competitive market. Drive shafts are torquey and they can throw your bike over if you are not ready for it. Power loss? Bikes are ridiculously powered these days and people falsely claim big power losses. Not! Those gears will last far longer than your chain or pulleys because they are enclosed and lubricated. Drive shaft systems are expensive compared to the other options and that is why you don’t see more of them. The more expensive bikes carry them. Huh!

  • @thereplacementfordisplacement
    @thereplacementfordisplacement 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The only negative thing to a driveshaft is the inability to customize the gearing and more expensive, that's it. Weight, power transfer, whatever nonsense are nit-picking. Chains are on bikes because they are cheap and easy to customize.
    Also, from a accounting standpoint chains are more than adequate for most people who buy bikes because they rarely put enough miles on to reach the end of a chain or belts lifetime.
