Especially for me, because I had a crush on my class's valedictorian, and displayed embarrassingly stalkerish behaviour towards him my senior year (before he and my best friend started dating the summer after we graduated). Ah, high school.
That would be an interesting dynamic for me. I was the valedictorian of my (very small) class in high school *and* I happen to have an MPS in publishing...not that I'm working in the field.
I'm not overwhelmingly certain that my high school valedictorian was literate (the position was chosen by student vote), so if it turned out that he was reading my manuscript and making suggestions, I'd honestly just be proud of the guy for coming so far.
Hank: "I'm not a high-stress person, I'm really not." Also Hank: Starts a podcast that's literally about recapping tweets that he probably shouldn't have tweeted.
John wants Hank to be proud of himself but Hank is the business owner least excited about participating in capitalistic marketing that I've ever seen, so it's a struggle lol
One thing the older brother would like to end: Reminding his younger brother how to market his book XD. ... By now I think it's more a of a bit, so, please dont stop

Seeing John's face rapidly zoomed in as he tells us about Hanks book...I love it. Both wholesome and hilarious. You both are so genuinely supportive of one another and it warms my heart. Have fun on tour you guys!
Hank explaining how books are written by opening with "first, you write a book" reminds me of those how to draw something tutorials that go from "draw a circle" to "make it look like Daniel Radcliffe".
The last piece with John is a running joke in my household too where my gf does the "Ethical Profit comes out Jan 11th and is available for preorder now" bit too
Hank, you don't know how encouraging that is... I'm trying to finish my first manuscript for my phd by publication and really battling with "this is hopeless, I've had to change it so many times - I'll never get it right" knowing that if I get it good enough to publish, I'll get it back with ...revisions... and then repeat the process for at least 3 more papers, and then get revisions again when I submit my thesis... You've helped me accept this insane existence as - okay -and not evidence that I should quit 😊
The ending of this video is so on brand for both brothers 🤣 Hank doesn’t mention the name or details of his book; John makes sure it’s shoved in the last 20 seconds

This comment is more about the whole 'future of the vlogbrothers' channel discussion. These last two videos confirmed my thoughts- The value of the vlogbrothers comes from the nature (and the nurturing) of your relationship as brothers. This channel started out as a conversation and I really hope that it continues in that direction too
Three things: 1. That transition was FABULOUS I could feel my heart going whOA 2. John saves the day again 3. Hank - have you found that writing a sequel is easier/faster than writing the first book? A lot of authors seem to churn out sequels much faster than first books, and I'm wondering if that's an experience thing (you're used to the characters, you have a cemented and unchangeable foundation to work from, maybe the sequel already existed as a part of the first book that was cut from the final edit, etc.) or if it's pushed by the publishers/editors.
We had a class seminar where we had to talk about our favourite book. I chose LFA but the teacher said no (India considers a lot of stuff in such books as deserving of being as taboo as they are), so I went ahead with Turtles all the way down. It went really well. Props to you John. I think turtles all the way down should also be taught in high school like LFA!
Took a break from editing my manuscript to watch this. As an as of yet unagented and unpublished author, sometimes I do find some sort of sick joy in knowing the worst thing that can happen is that I get to keep the manuscripts all to myself forever and change one word a day until I die.
I would love to thank you so so much for this video. I can't wait to watch it entirely and you've already made my day, but I would like to already mention that this is a really interesting and important topic for me. I am having a presentation on the professions of a lector/ author next week, which I could possibly be doing after I graduate. (Growing up with your books, you guys aren't completly not to blame for this choice :D) and your insight in the topic is incredibly amusing and helpful. Thanks a lot, Hank🤗 Also have a lovely evening and weekend. Lots of love :)
In many ways I am Hank, unable to market for myself, but at the same time I am John, shamelessly plugging myself and my achievements. It's a good thing they're in this together, and I know I wouldn't have it any other way
even tho this video is about the literary world, EVERY single thing hank says also applies to journalism and academic research (journalist and historian here!). especially the "22 pages list of all the ways this is trash" and "line by line your editor goes: whYY did you do this???'". SO RELATABLEEEE! thank you, hank, for making such a relatable video for me. laughed the entire time, because saaaaame.
Editing is fun! It's the end of the unseeable abyss! Finally, most of the tools you're working with are visible on the page, and if you have to create a big new thing, you're just sliding it in like the last puzzle piece. ... Which, okay, is sometimes still brutal. But slightly less hopeless!
This... this might be the single most intense John Green moment I've ever seen, I feel like John's gaze was piercing deep into my soul as he said those words
Hank, you have been responsible for my reading of 1Q84 a few months ago BECAUSE of how well you sold the ambitious nature the storytelling and worldbuiling (dont remember which video, it was about your writing process but dont know if it was on hank's or vb) and this is one of my favorite books today. So, a) thanks :D, secondly, it makes me very excited to know that you feel your next book is very ambitious - being a writer myself, i have been through this feeling on my second novel and currently am right there about the novel i am currently writing - and it feels like this is a feeling shared by those people who discovered how much they love writing; 3: still havent picked up an absolutely remarkable thing, i should probably get around to that, but to be honest i fell into a murakami spiral which was your fault, ultimately (see point a).); IV being in Brazil I dont really relate to your editor-market process, i have had different pressures on different stages of the publishing opus, but I still hope you can end the thing you would like to end.
Being an editor married to an author, this makes me laugh. The only time that you can legitimately shit on your partner in a supportive relationship is when you're their editor. It's literally 90% of the job "this is wrong" "that was wrong" "change this" "this sounds too much like x" "this conveys the wrong idea" "terrible, just terrible"
I have been re-editing my first self-published novel (from 2015) for almost a year now. I was close to finishing edits on my second book when I realized I wanted to apply all the things I learned over 3+ years to Book One, which hadn't really gained much of an audience. I didn't change the story and barely touched the dialogue (which I consider to be the things that made the book what it was and needed to be). But I've reworked most of the other text. Descriptions were always a struggle for me, and now they are at least more readable. Anyhow, I've been struggling a lot with motivation as I come closer to completing this long process. I can't help but worry it won't be worth it. Yes, the book is better than it's ever been before. I am so close to being (as much as you *ever* can be) happy with it. But it being better doesn't necessarily mean anyone will care. And this process has been the most critical I've ever been of my original work, of a story so vulnerable and personal that I'm terrified of how it will be received... if it ever even *is* received. The last few years of work have awakened my inner self-critic, which has been horrible for my anxiety and depression. And I think again and again: is it really worth it? I've wanted to be a writer (and nothing else) since I was eleven. But it is so much harder than I imagined it would be.
THIS was my exact experience with getting an edit letter for my book. "This is good. It can be better, but it is good. Here is 20+ pages of how it is not good." WHAAAAAAAAAA-- *brooklyn 9-9 intro music*
John is SUCH a good big brother. Also, before my students hand their work in, I have them either read it aloud to someone OR have someone else read it aloud. They think I'm crazy, but their final product is always better for having done that step.
I felt this rant on writing so profoundly i sent it to all my writing buddies. We feel you and support you. but mostly: YOU WROTE A BOOK THAT IS AWESOME

Hank! I’m listening to the audio version of An Absolutely Remarkable Thing! If it sucked I’d tell you. In fact, it doesn’t suck. It’s outstanding! I can’t wait to read (or listen to) the next one!
Well there you go Hank, you have just broken down the reason why I personally could never write a book (even though I have thought about it from time to time). I just could not deal with that amount of editorial input. That amount of implied criticism of what I had written. And its not like I don't have any writing experience. I certainly do. But it so far has been discursive articles about work related subjects. And ironically enough I also have a lot of editorial experience. However I would seriously balk at being on the receiving end of the editorial chore....
