Hi. Please like this video. :) I haven't asked that in years, and will not ask it again for years. But I am so curious. Also, come see us on tour: www.hankandjohn.com/appearances There is a bad cut in this video because I rushed the edit but I already re-uploaded once and I'm not doing it again WELCOME TO OLD-SCHOOL TH-cam. Sorry. Okay, first update . . . First fifteen minutes after uploads: Likes to views ratio is around 1:3 (3k likes and 9k views), which is vastly different from 1:10. But will this different ratio hold???? 1 Hour 15 minute update: 11,000 likes and 23,000 views, for a like to views ratio near 1:2. So obviously the ratio hasn't held so far! Still 22+ hours to go, though. INTERESTINGLY, this video is getting more views than our videos usually get in the first hour+, so the likes might be bringing in new viewers? Or maybe it's just a coincidence. This is NOT a scientific study, obviously. 1 Hour 45 minute update: 14,000 likes and 31,500 views, so the ratio is holding near 1:2. (Jeez. Thanks!) Views continue to go up--about 30% above our normal views for this period--but there could be a variety of reasons for that. Maybe my pretty face in the thumbnail, for instance. I'll keep you updated here! -John 2 hour 45 minute update: 44,000 views, 20,000 likes. The rate of like to view is now around 1:2.4, and viewership is accelerating. The video is now about 35% above our normal views for the time period. Will we end up at 1:10 at 24 hours? (Probably not. But maybe!) Okay! 8 hour update: 81,000 views, 38,000 likes. The ratio is now around 1:2.1--quite similar to what it was after the first hour, meaning that hour 8 viewers are about as likely to click like (on this video) as hour one viewers. Views are still ahead of where one would expect them to be for this video, by about 35%. So all the trends have held steady, basically. The 1:10 ratio is dead! A new ratio is born! For the moment anyway! Thanks for all the likes. 17 Hour Update: 107,000 views, 47,000 likes. The old ratio is dead. Long live the new ratio, of 1:2.2ish. Views are still up around 35% above what would be expected, but the big lesson for me here is that the 1:10 ratio was not necessary or inevitable and was probably at least partly a result of human behavior. Another big lesson for me is that online, human behavior and algorithmic behavior are not really separable. -John
@@ScottKorin I took it down because it had a huge period of blank video in it. I've had one of those days where I've had to be an extreme level of rush, which always results in mistakes that require extra time to fix, thereby worsening the rush, and so on. It's okay. Today will end. I will not be sad to see it go. -John
i appreciate this is the wrong place to request but: please review (and, ideally, get paid to review) a cruise ship experience and use the most pretentious color-words you can to try to describe the blue of sky.
Since becoming a Nerdfighter, I have: - Started undergrad - Finished undergrad - Spent three years applying to medical school - Met the love of my life - Got in and graduated from medical school - Married the love of my life - Finished half of my residency Thanks for irrevocably changing my life for the better, for encouraging me to think about things and issues and people complexly. 🖖🖖
It's so wild to hear how people have literally become different humans - achieving so many big and small wonderful things - over the span of being a part of this community. I started watching in high school and now I'm in a PhD program. I love reading how so many others have been through similar journey's in their own lives. Congrats on the half-way point in your residency!
I stole your premise and added my own. I hope others follow so I’m not just an egregious copycat. But this was beautiful and really helped me take a moment to reflect on my life over the past 9 years. Thank you for that moment and for sharing.
Also John I think you'll appreciate this: my mom is a priest, and there are a few atheists and agnostics in their church choir. So whenever the non-Christians come up for communion instead of saying the usual blessing, she whispers "don't forget to be awesome"
Since becoming a Nerdfighter, I have: - Started and finished high school - Started and finished undergrad - Started medical school - Met my now-fiancé I'm graduating from medical school in 2.5 months, and I'm still a Nerdfighter. Thanks, Green brothers! EDIT: thank you all for the kind words-I love seeing how beautifully this community has aged together :)
Hey! Me too (except I'm 2.5 years from graduating...)! Nerdfighteria has meant something different to me through each of those steps. Now that I'm in med school, I mainly engage with Hank/John via their podcast on my way to school, but I love that I've been able to be part of this community for so long and through so much. Good luck on Match and everything!
Same here! -started and finished high school -started and finished undergrad -started and finished graduate school -started my career as a teacher -taking a break after 1.5 years of teaching to move abroad So happy they are still making videos! They’ve been so influential in my life
Very similar!! - Finished high school & moved out - Finished one undergrad degree & started another - Moved to another country and back again - Met and moved in with my life partner I don't engage in real-life Nerdfighter communities often but vlogbrothers and Nerdfighteria have been cornerstones during my transition into adulthood! My partner is almost the age Hank was when the channel started and it's cool to see myself and him come into a part of life I watched Hank live through.
Awesome! I've been around for a long time too John's Sarah and me (also a Sarah) were expecting our second child at the same time. They are both now about 6 and a half.
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have: - finished high school - moved to Germany - started and finished medical school - started my training as a psychiatrist - become a better, more attentive and thoughtful person. Thank you for this beautiful and peculiar companionship!
Nevena Stoynova I rarely read or post comments but I just had to comment. I also discovered Vlogbrothers in high school and their videos were my treat to myself when I finished homework. I didn’t move countries, but I finished high school and 7 years of medical school as well. I moved to a different city after and I just started my psychiatry residency. This is such a happy coincidence :) Thank you Brothers Green.
Since I have been a nerd fighter, I have lived my entire life. My sister was a nerdfighter from the start of Brotherhood 2.0, so as soon as I was allowed to watch TH-cam videos, you guys have been my main favorite channel.
Since I began following vlogbrothers, I: - graduated high school - graduated college - became a teacher - met the love of my life - married the love of my life - bought a house - adopted a few pets - and in a couple months, I will turn 30 ... vlogbrothers has followed me through my young adult life and now into my adult, adult life. Quite a ride it's been.
This is bananas. You and I have had nearly identical trajectories. The only differences being I will be turning 28 instead of 30 and I have one baby and one cat instead of many pets. Hope your enjoying your now shared, parallel existence.
Please.. you need to step up that TH-cam exhilaration a little, it's.. *rakes throat*: "Smash that like button! Hit that subscribe button while you're at it!! And don't forget to ring that bell for more notifications!!!" *with the breath of an infinitely expanding universe (I jest of course ;)
@@Narbaculus : I'm pretty sure Lupin said that quote in Deathly Hallows Part 2, not Azkaban. Additional relevant fact: that quote is only in the movie -- not the novel.
Since becoming a nerdfighter: - went to college - dropped out of college - went back to college, graduated with honors - got into masters degree - decided wasn’t for me, left program - found love of my life, got engaged, got married - now working at a court reporting firm, feel like I truly belong
John was the first person on TH-cam to draw my attention to the fact that my attention is a commodity, and that can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how much value I assign to it. John, I care about vlogbrother videos because, frankly, I feel that vlogbrother videos care about me. #Dftba
THANK YOU! YOU PUT IT INTO WORDS. It is a TH-cam community where I actually feel that community more than I do in my own small town. I feel appreciated, cared for, and listened to. They dont make videos to make videos. They make videos that you dont just consume but use the information as a filter for everyday life!
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have - Dropped out of high school - Gotten my GED - Started and finished undergrad - Started and finished my masters - Began working in the middle east in crisis response in Syria
Thank you for working there! I sit safely at home and hope and wait for the day when I can travel to Syria again. The people I met there are so kind and the last 10 years brought them more horror than I will ever be able to comprehend.

FUN FACT ALERT: There's a well documented internet trend that I think helps give context to this phenomenon. It's the 90-9-1 rule. 90% of the internet lurks 9% contributes (likes/comments) 1% creates content There's probably a Wikipedia page that could explain this better, but I think it's true of pretty much any internet community. One of my favorite musical quotes is “I’d rather be 9 people’s favorite thing than 100 people’s 9th favorite thing” and I feel like that saying is really true for Vlogbrother’s videos

Right? I have never ever liked a video on TH-cam despite being subscribed to hundreds of channels and spending hours on here each day, preferring just to watch and save a few to favorites every now and then. But I liked this one just because of the way he asked.
Agreed. I am not someone who typically hits the 'like' button (idk why, i just.. dont...). But since John asked so very nicely, I went ahead and did it
When I discovered the channel about a year ago, it felt weird to me that I’d never heard of it, like it was TH-cam’s best kept secret. And it’s nice that you keep it that way. It means a lot for those that discover that secret
Thanks for the response! You have no idea how much this channel means to me. It’s helped me through so much in the brief time I’ve been around here! (*Desperately attempts to contain freakout over getting a response*)
Yeah and I totally get it. There was a long, long period (like 10 years almost!) where we really wanted our audience to grow and grow, and more viewers felt like inherently good news, and we were definitely on the equivalent of the LIKEANDSUBSCRIBE train. I feel really lucky not to currently be on that train, though, because it is exhausting. -John
@@vlogbrothers I'm 30 years old, I've been part of your community for over 10 years now. I appreciate how you guys how both evolved and have completely stayed the same at the same time. Congrats on not being on the train!
Since becoming a nerd fighter I have: -survived the hell of middle school -survived and graduated high school -got into one of the top public universities -majored in stem and will be graduating in June I would not have realized my deep passion for science, art, and helping others if I have not found your channel. Thank you for making me feel accepted and making growing up a little easier. DFTBA always
Lets make it hit 50%! Hell yeah! Funnily enough when John says, "for those who have been here a long time" I never pictured myself as such or as a "real" (heavy quotations) nerdfighter. Was always like, yeah, I don't go on forums or anything, he doesn't mean me. Then I got the realization that for over 10 years, I haven't missed a single video, and when I do because of vacations and such I always catch up eventually. Idk, I just think it brutally interesting that without meaning to I have followed this for so long and hope to keep following it. As well as, of course, to screw up with the analytics in this video as much as possible. Lets get it to trending people!!!! Edit: couple mistakes
SAME!! I never thought I was a real nerdfighter or here as long as others. And I've never really sat and thought about the amount of time, but it's been about close to 10 years for me too.
I too have had that not a real nerdfighter feeling (Also having been around 10+ years) but just like you I haven't missed a video. The nice thing about this place is being considered a nerdfighter even if you don't participate much.
Reading in the comments about how much Nerdfighteria has meant to people over the years made my day. It's so nice that there's a place like this that rather shares ideas and thoughts and has such a great community built around it when a lot of the time most I see feels awfully click baity and polarizing.
Since becoming a nerdfighter I have: -gotten my heart broken -graduated high school -survived some horrible depressive episodes -lived in Austria -changed career paths -left college -moved five times -worked at Disney World -gotten married to my best friend! -decided to go back to school online -made plans to move to NYC, where I’ve wanted to live since I was six years old
“Rate videos on a five star scale” this concept seems familiar? Also I’d so like to see an anthropocene reviewed on the metric-ification of creative activity, perhaps I’ll send in an email....
I’ve been here for 12 years. That’s 50% of my life thus far. 😮 In my tenure of subscribership I had my first kiss, graduated high school, failed my first test, met and married my husband, experienced the first death in my close family, related to Holden Caulfield, stopped relating to Holden Caulfield, graduates college, and bought a house. I’ve lived life with you guys by my side, grounding me in empathy and consideration for others. Rock on ❤️
I've been here for exactly the same amount of time and milestones (although I wont be married until June this year) I consider these two men my internet dads. They may not have taught me quite as much as my real dads in life, but I think I've listened to them more.
I was introduced to you guys something like 7 and a half years ago, through an episode on Crash Course World History I saw in my AP World History class (slight tangent: my final project for that class was a 14-minute "crash course of crash course" in which I covered all of world history, complete with jump cuts, globe, and computer with a "This Machine Eats Burgers" sticker I made especially for it). I had no idea there was anything else you wonderful folks did, and discovered this channel. I became a fervent Swoodilypoopers, then Wimbly Womblies fan, started watching SciShow, watched Mental Floss videos. While I have since stopped watching a lot of that due to running out of time in my adult life, I never stopped watching here, because it always feels real. This isn't manufactured content. This is the thoughts of people who see something and get an idea lodged in their heads and turn it into poetry. Thank you for showing me that a channel doesn't have to be one thing. It can be music, being trapped in a Target, explanations of poverty and disease, testing aspects of TH-cam's whims, and creating a community of people who care, all at the same time. Thank you for everything. Don't Forget to be Awesome.
Since becoming a nerdfighter I have: - gotten help for self harm through therapy - found a medication that helps anxiety and depression - graduated from high school - am about to graduate from college
Pretty sure this is my first youtube comment. I've been watching for 11 years consistently. I'm still proud to call myself a nerdfighter because it really helped me realise and accept that I am a nerd. Embracing that made me really comftarble and confident and thats something everyone around you can pick up on. Who knew embracing the nerdiness would only make you cooler!

Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have: --Gone on a vlogbrothers watching spree last weekend --Joined the Tuataria Discord server --Begun to watch all the vlogbrothers videos from the beginning --Have become inspired to create my own video record/video blog series for my life to look back on in the future so I have a lot to look back on from my high school days and beyond. I plan to do this for a long time. To the extremely kind and compassionate people I have met in the community already *in the last few days*. To Nerdfighteria and to being a Nerdfighter! May the community live on for decades (if it actually lasted for centuries due to life extension technology, that would be epic)! DFTBA!
I started watching weekly in 2013. I was 19 years old. Since then I've gotten married, had a baby, moved multiple times, survived many battles with severe depression, and your videos/books/podcast have been along for the ride. I read TATWD on my honeymoon, I watched your videos while in labor with my son, and An Absolutely Remarkable Thing gave me an escape I didn't know I needed at the time. I feel like I've been a nerd fighter my whole life. DFTBA!
When you see other creators shamelessly promoting themselves at the beginning and end of every video (if not more), it's refreshing to see John ask about our likes in such a humble way. A very rare sighting, and so pure.
Since becoming a nerd fighter 9 years ago I have: -graduated high school - got my first job at our local family video - moved out of my childhood home - went college - fell in love - fell out of love - went to my first concert - went to my first book signing - got my first internships - and learned so much about this world and different ways to look at it and the people in it and had this community, these videos, and your books with me every step of the way as I’ve grown up DFTBA!!!
I started following vlogbrothers about halfway through Crash Course: World History. In that time I have bought a house with my husband, had a child, enjoyed the quirky antics of both you and Hank, and have blamed many things on the Mongols.
I started watching Vlogbrothers in 2010, and OH MY GOD THAT'S TEN YEARS AGO. I was 13 and I'm 23 now and holy crap 2010 was ten years ago. I saw my first videos because of TH-cam Highlights, I believe. I saw Hank talk about the world with a birth/death map and it blew my mind. I dove in and one summer I decided to watch from the beginning and I felt like a real nerdfighter. I can't believe I grew up with this channel. It feels so weird to grow up reading John's books and now relate to April in Hank's book(s). Even though I don't really identify as a nerd or a nerdfighter anymore, I still feel connected to this community and the ideas behind it. I do still care, because these videos taught me to care for the world, and I still deeply appreciate that.
I started in 2009 at age 12! Love hearing about people who found it at the same time. So much changes in those years and it is so interesting to have a group of people that all followed two people and their perspectives throughout that timeframe.
Since I became a nerdfighter: -I started undergraduate school -I finished undergraduate school -went from learning Blockchain development to teaching Blockchain development -started writing poems -started my own blog to post my poems for the world to see -grew as a person and learnt a lot everyday -spent more time online doing effective learning Thank you for being a constant source of positivity and also for being completely raw and honest to all of us. We love you.
I've been a Nerdfighter for 10 years now (woah!) and in those 10 years, I have: - Finished middle school - Finished high school - Finished my undergrad - Travelled to 20+ countries - Met my boyfriend of 5 years - Started my first job and had 3 different jobs - Got accepted into a graduate program I love this community more than words and I'm so happy I stumbled upon you folks when I was 13. The Nerdfighter community has really shaped who I am today and I'll always be grateful to you both/the communtiy!
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have: -Traveled to Perú -Grown comfortable with the single life in the company of my friends -Vastly improved my Spanish -Found my place in university extra-curriculars -Participated in my first Pizzamas! Also I became a nerdfighter this past fall, sooo.
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have... - Watched every vlogbrothers video ever made (1930, at last count) - Graduated high school - Visited 7ish different countries - Started and finished a bachelor's degree - Worked a 90-hour week as a teacher (later setting down to averaging 60ish hours... Man, that first year is killer) - Started a master's program This channel has formed who I am now and who I strive to be each day. Forever grateful for that strange slobber-carrot punishment video that my cousin showed me back in 2013. DFTBA!!
I found this place because of John’s books. That’s where it all started. The first of his books I picked up was The Fault in Our Stars, which I absolutely loved. Two years later (that first time was in 5th grade), I read Paper Towns, which I also loved. When I started high school, my biology teacher showed us Crash Course Biology videos, a huge upgrade from her usual teaching. I didn’t think much of the guy talking (sorry Hank), but I loved the videos. Honestly, I learned more from them than from my teacher (don’t tell her I said that). The next year in US history, my teacher showed us Crash Course US History videos, probably because he loved them and thought they did a great job explaining things like the Cold War. The moment I heard “Hi, I’m John Green” I was like “oh my god! This is the guy whose books I’ve been reading!” At the end of the video, I heard John say that he also makes videos for a channel called vlogbrothers with his brother Hank. So one day I thought “why not check them out?” And I clicked on one of Hank’s videos. The second I saw him, a voice in my head screamed, “this is that guy from Crash Course Biology!!” That video was just as interesting as any Crash Course video, but I felt like it was more personal, which is why I really connected with it. I loved that video so much, I kept coming back to the channel. I’ve been watching vlogbrothers ever since. Two years later, here I am, months away from graduating high school. I still watch Crash Course in school, in psychology and physics, and really enjoy watching these videos. I also really enjoyed reading Looking for Alaska. (Thank god I didn’t read it before this year or I would’ve been scarred.) What I’m really trying to say here is thank you. Thank you, John and Hank, for all that you do. Thank you for making amazing content that’s interesting and relevant (and occasionally funny) and above all, thank you for being awesome people.
"It's not about what you love, it's about how you love it." When i was a teenager i liked a well known band really much, that just wasn't a cool band anymore. I used to feel frustrated that my friends wouldn't share my enthusiasm for this band and include it in the group of bands you were supposed to like. I still love this band, though i really don't care about those other bands anymore that i thought i liked back then because of peer pressure. I don't even see or hear from those friends anymore, because time happened in between. But this band is one of the core aspects of my identity right now, in my mid- thirties. It is good to have a thing that is my thing, even though not particularly popular anymore. I simply don't care about it not being popular - there are other criteria upon which i value my experience when i listen to one if their albums. I feel this way about this channel.
Wow, I was surprised by the twist at the end. Every other youtuber I watch references vlogbrothers at some point, as creators of vidcon, if nothing else, but usually as inspiration for youtubeing. To my mind, this channel is like the classics everyone has to read at school, weather you like it or not is irrelevant, you know about it and about how influential it has been.
I was introduced to vlogbrothers like 5 years ago when we watched a crash course video in geography and my teacher told us John had written tfios. I literally couldn’t believe that the funny, fast-talking crash course dude was the author of all the popular girls in school’s favorite book! (no offense haha) She also said he had a youtube channel so I checked it out. I only watched John’s videos for a while and I had no idea who this “Hank” guy was. When I figured it out I decided to give Hank’s videos a chance but the first one I watched was “Hank Is An Adorable Drunk Princess” which I found annoying because I didn’t know he was actually drunk. Months later, after a reunion video, I finally gave Hank another chance and I am so glad I did because I love both brothers so much! It is so weird to think about where I was in my life 5 years ago first discovering this channel and how it has remained a constant source of happiness, laughter, and even hope through some pretty scary times through the years. I am so glad I found this channel and this community.
since becoming a nerdfighter, i have: - graduated middle school - graduated high school with my AA degree - started my undergrad in orlando (no thanks to your strong lack of recommendation) - seen your live podcast!
I’ve been here for 10+ years. My only break was during a 2 year period while I served a Mormon mission in Brazil. Love your guys content, especially The Anthropocene Reviewed. To this day it’s the only podcast to make me cry.
At first I was really surprised to read that a mormon missionary watched this channel, because your life is so radically different from mine. Then I realized, this is exactly why I love this channel and this community. It just brings so many different people together. (also, very much agreed on the anthropocene reviewed. That podcast is amazing. The episode on auld lang syne literally made my pause my bikeride, just to shed some tears)
I've been here since 2008 or 2009, I'm not sure which (at the time I went back and watched every single Vlogbrothers video to catch up. I can't possibly imagine doing that now 😬) I've fallen in and out of love with the world Vlogbrothers have created. But you've always been there to go back to. It's such a comfort when so much has changed in my life and the world. Liked. 💕
While reading your comment I suddenly realised that I did the watching everything back thing in like 2014. In my mind it was so recent, but really, that was ages ago...
I binged all the videos in 2011? 2012?Whenever the tfios signing madness happened. It kept me entertained for most of my winter break. But yeah, this is one of the few internet communities that I know I can just pop in and chill for a while when I feel like it. It's always been there, it kinda feels like youtube home.
Since becoming a nerdfighter I have: - Found my academic pasion - Learned how to make friends and really be courious about other people - Made a home of my own - Gone from being a anxious teenager to a kind and confident young adult
My wife introduced me to the vlogbrothers when we were in college and I have been watching now for 6 years. I rarely give a review and have never commented on any other video, ever. I feel safe doing so here. Thank you for fostering such a positive community.
This is my first ever comment. I started watching in 2011. This was the first channel I subscribed too. I almost never like videos but did this time as requested. I did go back and watch the entire library. I’ve participated in most of the census surveys.
in the 11 YEARS that i have been a nerdfighter, i have: -finished middle school -finished high school -started college (about to finish (finally)) Im not he best with words, but ill try my best here. These two guys have had an immeasurable impact on my life. All those days i felt like nothing really was of any consequence one of these two guys would give me a new prospective, weather it be through one of johns books, or one of hanks scishows or that time john came to my high school for a book reading or that time there was a wonderful meet up at the Chicago bean, or through any of the other wonderful works these two have contributed to. i guess what im trying to say is thank you guys for all the stuff you do.

I have been watching you since when I had just moved away from home as a 20 year old in 2009. Since then I have gone up and down in how much I watched you, and switched to a new channel but re-subscribed again, but you've been there. After 8 years of university, through economic troubles, burn out, depression and love, all up to the point where I am a psychologist with a more or less stable life, you've hung around in the background. That's kind of amazing.
Do you remember back when the view counter would get stuck at 308? I wonder if it is a similar thing where they just tie likes to views for a period of time until they can compile all of the data. Are likes even important for youtube anymore? They might just be tracking videos that go extreme on the thumbs down: thumbs up ratio to look for as candidates for demonitization.
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have: - graduated college - gotten a teaching job - gotten a teaching degree - moved out to my own apartment - gotten my driver's license - travelled to USA twice! - went to 2 international cons, Disney and WWoHP - left ballet for musical theatre - actually learned acting, which I didn't think I could do - founded, and then left, a RL fandom group - played Quidditch!
I’ve been a nerdfighter for 9 years! I very rarely “like” videos, unless it’s one of the best videos I’ve ever seen, does something unique I haven’t seen before, or something I want to save for later. But, because you brothers have been a force of good in my life for nearly half my existence, and because I too am very curious, here, have a like ❤️

I noticed the 10% ratio a while ago too! One thing that this increased like ratio has caused: this video has been in the sidebar recommendations for me a lot more than usual vlogbrothers uploads. I've been here (in Nerdfighteria) a long time. I met my partner, started our relationship, got engaged, started to live together, and got married. I had my best friend cat Jax die, grieved him for five years, and finally adopted my new best friend cat, Dahlia. I also graduated high school, dropped out of a four-year university, earned my associate's at community college, and am now back to earning my bachelor's. I've lived in 3 cities, had all of the jobs I've ever had in my life (5, I think?). Nerdfighteria's been there the whole time to remind me that kindness, caring for other people, positivity, and thoughtfulness are not naive, ineffective ways to look at the world.
I think I've continued watching vlogbrothers all these years *because* they stay true to that "old youtube" style. They make good videos for the sake of it, not to game the system.
I think I have been watching for 12 years. I have a relatively vivid memory of being in my first year room at uni in 2008 and watching brotherhood 2.0 videos back to back and getting increasingly miffed by the thud of the "2.0" after the typewriter opening (but also it not bothering me enough to stop me watching). It is a very very odd thing that 2 strangers have had such a profound influence on my life. It's like regularly attending a church where you hide in a broom cupboard just listening but not actively participating (unless you count the census!). I hope I am still in the broom cupboard listening for many years to come :)
Since becoming a nerdfighter I have: Finished middle and high school Changed my career goals from supreme court justice to engineer to middle school English teacher (which I am currently begining to do!) Suffered, a lot Been the happiest I have ever been, much more Thank you for being a constant for so much of my memorable life!
I think I joined somewhere around the early 2010s? I can't remember if I was around when Henry was born, but I remember him being a baby. I think I also remember when Sarah was still "The Yeti" too- how far that's come!

Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have finished my PhD, became an associate professor, married my wife, moved to another country, became a researcher... The ratio of good things happening per years as a nerdfighter is astonishing!
since becoming a nerd fighter I have: - finished high school - earned a bachelors degree - held several so-called "real" jobs in marketing/advertising - gotten 2 cats - gotten married - gotten a promotion - celebrated a 5-year wedding anniversary - watched every vlogbrothers video - strived to be a more thoughtful, considerate person & to consider other people complexly
I've been a nerdfighter since 2012 when I was in 7th grade. I'm in my sophomore year of college now! I truly cannot overstate how influential this channel and community were in me becoming who I am today, like on a fundamental level, nor how much of a life raft it was to have discovered them when I did. It's kind of amazing how I can pick nearly anything about who I am now or what I like and draw an arrow backwards that leads to something that leads to something that almost always originates here. Right down to my college major or the name of my cat. (I'll use the cat as an example. Her name is Vin after a character in a Brandon Sanderson book, which I wouldn't have known about if I hadn't read Name of the Wind, which I wouldn't have known about if Hank hadn't recommended it years ago.) This channel was a distinct nudge at a key point in time that sent my life, the further it continues on from that moment, in an increasingly different direction. I love it just as much as I did at age 12 and I wouldn't give it up for anything.
What's a nerdfighter? I've seen it used by people and in questionaire, but there were no explanation. Is this some kind of Fight Club thing? Am I even supposed to ask about it?
@@donatodiniccolodibettobardi842 LOL no, feel free to ask questions! "Nerdfighters" is the name of the fan community for the Vlogbrothers channel. It comes from an early video where one of the brothers found an arcade game that said "NERDFIGHTERS" on it.
I’ve been a Nerdfighter for 7 years in that time I’ve: -Bought two co-ops -Had a child -Finally graduated college -Got 4 tattoos and 3 piercings -Changed jobs twice It’s been an eventful 7 years 💕
Just today I looked at my reflection in the mirror and said "Hank, as you can see... puff levels are high." I've also had occasion to answer "Who the eff is Hank?" The answer, of course, is that Hank is a flightless bird native to New Zealand, in the genus Apteryx and family Apterygidae. Approximately the size of a domestic chicken, Hank is by far the smallest living ratites (which also consist of ostriches, emus, rheas, and cassowaries). Now that I think about it, when did secret siblings stop being a thing?
Since becoming a Nerdfighter, I've: - moved across the country, and back again - learned how to drive - graduated from high school - worked 10 jobs (I think?) - completed four years of university EEK. Thank you for creating and maintaining a community such as this to learn from and feel connected to, and mark the years by.
Ive been following you guys for 10 years and have seen every video you have put out on this channel. I sometimes fall a month or so behind but always binge your videos on the treadmill to catch up. I never like or comment but will for this video. Thanks for being an inspiration and a friend for me all these years!
I’m no longer sure when I started watching Vlogbrothers (I think I came via LBD but can’t remember clearly). But I do know that you uploaded your video about perspective at probably the worst time in my life, and it encouraged me and helped me to know that I would get through that season. I go back and watch it occasionally - about once a year - and each time I watch it, I feel that terrible time fading further into the distance and becoming less and less a part of who I am. It’s such an incredibly helpful landmark to have, and I can’t express all that in a like (though I have hit the like button this time!).
I went back and watched the video again, and *apparently* it’s older than I thought and predates the Big Sad, but I started watching it regularly when I was so unhappy. So my comment about being unable to express that in a like still stands!
I found vlogbrothers because of your Ted Talk John and my daughter’s love of your Fault in our Stars. Love the mindfulness, honesty, and intelligence you both put into these videos.
I've been here for 5 years and they have helped me come from the darkest part of my life, a suicide attempt. To being extremely happy in college with a girlfriend that I'm planning on proposing to
I've been watching your videos for a few years now (3-4 I'd say). I usually don't "like" most videos because I use the "Liked videos" tab to save videos I find exceptional and want to see again / show someone else later. But today I made an exception for you John, and I liked your video (at hour 22). Keep it up, I've really been enjoying vlogbrothers' videos and will keep watching them.
I started watching vlogbrothers when I was around 12 after loving John’s books and I’ve stuck with you ever since. There are very few channels I’ve watched consistently over the last 6 or so years, but you are one of them.
Since becoming a nerd fighter I have: -graduated high school -started undergrad -finished undergrad -gotten my post Bach -moved forward in my dream career -started a radio show -gotten a goldfish named King Harmon(y) and a Guinea pig named Melody
That 10:1 consistently really isn't an accident. You guys have been around enough that people like me have literally grown up with you two as role models. John, youre my role model. You were one of my 'fake dads', the people you model your masculinity off of because my own father wasn't around enough. When I started developing worse anxiety, depression, and OCDD from my cPTSD as a teenager, your videos and your openness about mental health and your love of every detail you can wrangle from the world really kept me going in some bad times. Now I'm 19, about to be 20, and I'm a neuroscientist about to be published in my first paper. I never could've said that if it weren't for you recommending When Breath Becomes Air, and other books that have served as a springboard into my adulthood. I never would've made it without parasocial role models like yourself bringing happiness and gratitude into my days. It's hard to look serious when your photo is mona lisa ripping a bong, but I mean this 110% and to the moon and back. Thank you.
OrigamiMarie the nature of the theory wasn’t entirely concrete to begin with? If the theory was that TH-cam always just gives 10% likes on Vlogbrother videos, yeah, the theory’s dead, but if it’s something else, it could still be alive by nature of begging for likes. This whole thing is convoluted, yet interesting.
Been apart of the wonderful community of Nerdfighteria since 2010. Many of those years were dark times for me and this channel (and others run by the Green brothers) have given me so much hope in humanity ❤ Here's to 10 years of love and hope!
I'm a pretty recent nerd fighter, subscribed in about December :) I watch every video from y'all that comes out! I'll be honest though, when it comes to TH-camrs I watch regularly (like you guys), I hit like as soon as the video starts. It's my small way to support in a way that I know I can. And if the video has something in particular I really liked, I'll comment on it.
Is it weird to comment on such an old video? I don't think so. I'm also going to "like" it as well simply because you asked! I discovered your channel last month and have been watching past videos as the algorithm displays them. I have also went to the channel and picked a few to watch by the titles. I've enjoyed them all and "liked" them. Problem is I watch on my TV and often can't access the button as easily. The Reunions are my favorite! I appreciate the content you and Hank are creating. This is a wonderful community and I'm thankful for clicking on that first video and finding so much goodness. That sounded lame, but I think you get what I'm saying. Thank you for the content, new and old, and I look forward to future content 😀 also thanks for being AWESOME and putting so much AWESOME out in the world!
-John
2 hour 45 minute update: 44,000 views, 20,000 likes. The rate of like to view is now around 1:2.4, and viewership is accelerating. The video is now about 35% above our normal views for the time period. Will we end up at 1:10 at 24 hours? (Probably not. But maybe!)
Okay!
-John
...What happened to the other upload?
Liked, as I always do
@@ScottKorin I took it down because it had a huge period of blank video in it. I've had one of those days where I've had to be an extreme level of rush, which always results in mistakes that require extra time to fix, thereby worsening the rush, and so on. It's okay. Today will end. I will not be sad to see it go. -John

Thanks for these very kind words. And for giving us a seat at the table in your life these last seven years. We appreciate it. -John
Perfectly said! I also found them due to AP World history about 8 years ago and could not have put it better myself
Since becoming a nerdfighter I have:
- gotten help for self harm through therapy
- found a medication that helps anxiety and depression
- graduated from high school
- am about to graduate from college
“I dont want to live there.” 5 Stars
Proof that I will do literally anything John Green recommends
Pretty sure this is my first youtube comment. I've been watching for 11 years consistently. I'm still proud to call myself a nerdfighter because it really helped me realise and accept that I am a nerd. Embracing that made me really comftarble and confident and thats something everyone around you can pick up on. Who knew embracing the nerdiness would only make you cooler!
Welcome to the club. We have t-shirts that you can find everywhere. Please mind the gap, keep your hands and feet inside the cart at all times, and DFTBA.
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have:
--Gone on a vlogbrothers watching spree last weekend
--Joined the Tuataria Discord server
--Begun to watch all the vlogbrothers videos from the beginning
--Have become inspired to create my own video record/video blog series for my life to look back on in the future so I have a lot to look back on from my high school days and beyond.
DFTBA!
“I have seen the comment section of trending videos and I don’t want to live there” lol
When you see other creators shamelessly promoting themselves at the beginning and end of every video (if not more), it's refreshing to see John ask about our likes in such a humble way.
A very rare sighting, and so pure.
Since becoming a nerd fighter 9 years ago I have:
-graduated high school
- got my first job at our local family video
- moved out of my childhood home
- went college
- fell in love
- fell out of love
- went to my first concert
- went to my first book signing
- got my first internships
- and learned so much about this world and different ways to look at it and the people in it and had this community, these videos, and your books with me every step of the way as I’ve grown up
DFTBA!!!
I started following vlogbrothers about halfway through Crash Course: World History. In that time I have bought a house with my husband, had a child, enjoyed the quirky antics of both you and Hank, and have blamed many things on the Mongols.
You should be blaming everyone...wait for it....except the Mongols

I also started in 2010 at age 13 :) it's crazy to think about now.
Me too! Its hard to even believe its been 10 years
I started in 2009 at age 12! Love hearing about people who found it at the same time. So much changes in those years and it is so interesting to have a group of people that all followed two people and their perspectives throughout that timeframe.

-I finished undergraduate school
-went from learning Blockchain development to teaching Blockchain development

- Finished middle school
- Finished high school
- Finished my undergrad
- Travelled to 20+ countries
- Met my boyfriend of 5 years
- Started my first job and had 3 different jobs
- Got accepted into a graduate program
I love this community more than words and I'm so happy I stumbled upon you folks when I was 13. The Nerdfighter community has really shaped who I am today and I'll always be grateful to you both/the communtiy!

-Participated in my first Pizzamas!
Also I became a nerdfighter this past fall, sooo.
I’ve been here a long time, I’m not sure how many years. But I’m “watch every video on the channel from the beginning in an evening” old
It took me about 10 evenings, I think, at a fairly steady pace.
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have...
- Watched every vlogbrothers video ever made (1930, at last count)
- Graduated high school
- Visited 7ish different countries
- Started and finished a bachelor's degree
- Worked a 90-hour week as a teacher (later setting down to averaging 60ish hours... Man, that first year is killer)
- Started a master's program
This channel has formed who I am now and who I strive to be each day.
This is the guy whose books I’ve been reading!”
At the end of the video, I heard John say that he also makes videos for a channel called vlogbrothers with his brother Hank.
(Thank god I didn’t read it before this year or I would’ve been scarred.)
What I’m really trying to say here is thank you. Thank you, John and Hank, for all that you do. Thank you for making amazing content that’s interesting and relevant (and occasionally funny) and above all, thank you for being awesome people.
"It's not about what you love, it's about how you love it."
When i was a teenager i liked a well known band really much, that just wasn't a cool band anymore.
I am so glad I found this channel and this community.

since becoming a nerdfighter, i have:
- graduated middle school
- graduated high school with my AA degree
- started my undergrad in orlando (no thanks to your strong lack of recommendation)
- seen your live podcast!
When John said “a little curious” I heard Hank and it warmed my heart because they are the best brothers
omg! you are so right! I've never noticed that before!!!!

I’ve been here for 10+ years. My only break was during a 2 year period while I served a Mormon mission in Brazil. Love your guys content, especially The Anthropocene Reviewed. To this day it’s the only podcast to make me cry.
Thanks, I think?! :) I love making that podcast and I'm so grateful to you for listening to it. -John
That makes at least two people who have served missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who watch these. I love the content too.
Shout out to the RMs in here (Rochester NY). "There are dozens of us! Dozens!!!"
Liked. 💕
Thanks for this kind comment. And thanks for being here today! :) -John

NGL I actually clicked like at around “good morning Hank” and then it was like, oh, I already did the thing he wants me to do

I've been noticing that most videos hover around a 10% like to view ratio. Not just VlogBrothers, but getting exactly 10% is impressive.
Since becoming a nerdfighter, I have:
- graduated college
- gotten a teaching job
- gotten a teaching degree
- moved out to my own apartment
- gotten my driver's license
- travelled to USA twice!
- went to 2 international cons, Disney and WWoHP
- left ballet for musical theatre
- actually learned acting, which I didn't think I could do
- founded, and then left, a RL fandom group
- played Quidditch!
I’ve been a nerdfighter for 9 years! I very rarely “like” videos, unless it’s one of the best videos I’ve ever seen, does something unique I haven’t seen before, or something I want to save for later. But, because you brothers have been a force of good in my life for nearly half my existence, and because I too am very curious, here, have a like ❤️
Thanks so much, Abigail. (I mean, for the like, but mostly for those extremely kind words.) -John
I'm the exact opposite. Unless it's something I actively dislike, I click the like button. Interesting.
I've been watching since spring 2007 as a senior in high school. I'm 7 years into teaching at that same high school now.
In the 9 years I’ve been a nerd fighter I’ve:
Graduated high school
Started and finished undergrad
Started grad school
Moved 4 times
Got married
Am now pregnant with my first child
Omfg moving as a student! I moved 11 times in 4 years and I'm so determined I'm staying where I am until I buy a house 😂
I too finished high school and my undergrad, moved SEVERAL times, got married, and am now pregnant with my first child! :) I'm not currently in grad school, though. I became a teacher and am enjoying not being a student for a while.
Allie Bednarz NERDFIGHTERS OUT HERE CRUSHING IT AND IMPACTING OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS YES YOU GO LOVE!!!! I hope you move into your dream home and stay there for eternity 🙏🏻🥰

Chandler Rupert My misquoting the description or my hot take that Cincinnati is everything from the river to Dayton because Middletown is fake?
Just a random thought from a random nerdfighter but Carmel HS has one of the world's best colorguards and I hope y'all know that.
Since becoming a nerdfighter I have:

- held several so-called "real" jobs in marketing/advertising

Thanks for sharing your story! It's so exciting to hear about people who found the channel when they were young :)

Just today I looked at my reflection in the mirror and said "Hank, as you can see... puff levels are high."
I've also had occasion to answer "Who the eff is Hank?" The answer, of course, is that Hank is a flightless bird native to New Zealand, in the genus Apteryx and family Apterygidae. Approximately the size of a domestic chicken, Hank is by far the smallest living ratites (which also consist of ostriches, emus, rheas, and cassowaries).

@@louloureads3953 I was also going through a Big Sad when I found Vlogbrothers. Glad we made it out!

Thank you.
Theory: dead, buried, incinerated, atoms split in half, we did it, folks.
dymiren I’m going by the Stanford Prison Experiment model.
The next question is: is the ratio permanently changed, or does it revert in the next video or a few more videos after that?
OrigamiMarie the nature of the theory wasn’t entirely concrete to begin with? If the theory was that TH-cam always just gives 10% likes on Vlogbrother videos, yeah, the theory’s dead, but if it’s something else, it could still be alive by nature of begging for likes. This whole thing is convoluted, yet interesting.
I’ve been watching since 2009 and it’s always so interesting to see how the vlogbrothers channel changes but also stays the same over the years.
