  • Have you ever had the heating element on your oven/range go out? Maybe there were sparks. Maybe it just wouldn't turn on. Either way, you probably saw dollars being burned in your mind, whether it was a replacement range/oven or even a costly repair bill. Well, I found out it could be as cheap as $30 to fix it yourself!

    This failure is actually fairly common more than you might realize. To understand why an element sometimes goes out with a mini 4th of July in the kitchen so to speak, it helps to understand how an oven or broiler element is constructed (the exposed coil elements found on budget priced range tops have the same construction) . Inside the element is a coil of nichrome wire, much like what you see in a toaster or hair dryer, embedded in a chalk like powder for insulation to prevent you from getting shocked when you touch it. Next, the outer sheath is formed around it and formed into whatever shape is needed.
    Sometimes however, when an element has been in service for many years, the insulation inside deteriorates enough to allow the inner nichrome wire to touch the outer sheath, which happens to be grounded to the appliance chassis via the ground prong on the cord, for safety purposes. Since ovens are 240 volt, powered by two hot wires (L1 & L2) and most ovens only switch one of the hots to control the elements, a failed element will not respond to the oven controls and continue burning towards the terminal with the unswitched 120V to ground and the only way to stop the burning is to unplug the range or turn off the breaker, typically a 40 or 50 amp two pole, some wall ovens may only require a 20 to 30 amp circuit.
    Beginning with the 2023 national electrical code, all 120 and 240 volt circuits in a kitchen must be GFCI protected, and an oven element going nuclear would immediately trip the GFCI, so this will occur less frequently as time goes on, at the expense of significantly adding to the cost of new construction because two pole GFCI breakers cost in $120 to $160 range give or take, per breaker depending on the brand of panel

      Thankfully, it’s a fairly easy fix on most ovens, and far more manageable than buying a new oven. I’m holding o to this one for as long as I can.

      @@VickiTakacs. Oh I know. My parents had the same fridge for ever it seemed like. I have a washer and dryer that have lasted me over 10 years, and I don't want to jinx it because I know that's no longer the norm. Everyone just replaces them, so I'm glad that this oven element seems to be holding strong.

    Help! We had an element replaced twice in a 45 yr old kenmore oven, this last replacement (about a year old) caught on fire. Now our warranty company wants to just replace it for a third time, and I’m terrified it will just catch on fire again! Are there some very old ovens where it’s just not possible to replace the element? Why does it keep failing, and in this case, catching on fire!? Any information would be greatly appreciated

    Is it wise to work barefoot on electrical appliances?

      @Milledge.Austin  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s never hurt me. As long as you disconnect said devices, don’t see what the problem is with being barefoot in my house.

      @@Milledge.Austin True enough as far as electricity goes, but any oven rack, tool falling on your toe, or your toe getting caught under the oven as you slid it out, would not be pleasant. Be careful. Your attitude and attire while you work, does not generate any confidence in you abilities. Please be careful, safety first.

    Omg this just happened to me. My Friday night frozen pizza turned into some microwave hot pockets 😔Do u think it’s safe to use the stovetop until I get the new element in on Tuesday?

      Absolutely. Thankfully the stovetop isn’t affected by the oven element, so feel free to use that until you get the oven piece fixed.
