GMC is definitely an iconic landmark. maybe just revamping the lower few levels would bring in more light both physically and positively, while improving connectivity to the upper retail levels in structural and view terms can help lessen the claustrophobic vibe

The building itself looks awful but the culture in it is colourful. I guess the reason why it couldn't sustain is it doesn't renew its exterior image.
