KRIS’s UPDATE: “Hello, new friends. A brief update. I left Vermont several weeks ago, meaning to make a brief stop in Florida. Plans changed due to the hurricane and I ended up spending 3 weeks working with one of the relief organizations. It was equally hard and rewarding. Volunteering is a privilege we van dwellers have. Silinda, I hope this dream comes true for you. While you wait and prepare, consider joining some of the several facebook groups for female vandwellers with the same goal. Best of luck to you.
I will probably end up this way when my partner passes away. My income is half of what cheap rent is these days. I lived in a subsidized apartment complex for a few years. You get what you pay for. There was lots of mold and denial by the property managers who treated us like second class citizens. I felt trapped. Am in a nice house with the man I love now. But I can easily see myself needing to live out of a van by my mid 70s. Hopefully I will be as chipper and positive as this. We women will be everywhere hopefully creating community wherever we go. As a cheery old lady in another video said, she'd rather die having adventures than wasting away in an old folks home.
I hear you. I only owed $2.30 on my prescriptions after my insurance paid. I got an email that I didn't have enough in the bank to pay. You want to know why. Because I decided to get Audible. Audible is such a great asset to people who live alone. The full package is $14 a month. And it caused a $2 check to bounce. It's hard for the elderly to survive
My goodness what a lovely person she was. She is like a lot of us. She wants to respectfully exist in this world, peacefully. I wish you all the luck and blessings, nice lady!

I don't know her but I just love her spirit and attitude about things. She's built a nice little home for herself. Thank you for this interview and tour. Stay safe.
Im 57 now and know I wont have enough money to retire . I have decided to became a solo traveler. My employment allows me to work from home/remote so I can work anywhere there is good WIFI. Starting all my research now so in about 10 years I should have enough ideas and funds to get started. I really enjoyed listening to Kris and seeing her amazing home. I love the simplicity she has allowed herself. 😊😊
This is the best video I have ever seen about van life. It helps dispell all the misconceptions of having to have electricity and an intricate build to the van. If a sweet old lady can do it, we can do it too.
I cared for my elderly parents in their last years. I pulled from my van life experience and used a bag and the pine pellets in the bedside potty when they got too weak to walk to the bathroom.
Love this lady and her joyful spirit. Enjoyed her tour. So sorry to hear the update that her rig had driven its last mile! God bless her! Praying that she’s able to get another. I’m 62 and I’ve been doing the same thing as Chris only in my car for the last 5 yrs. I’m working hard to put together enough funds to purchase a van (an upgrade for me) so that I can go on some adventures too. God bless Chris with a new home so that she can continue to bless others.
And there are so many ways to volunteer. Any interest one has can be made into a volunteer opportunity. Like playing chess? Find some elders or school age kids and make a chess club. Anything at all
Kris is an easy person to visit with and learn from. I listen to some nomads over and over and Kris is one of them. Thank you for this tour and interview.
I LOVE that you do not have all the electrical and device "stuff." My family thinks I'm nuts because when I take off in my van I don't take modern life with me. Devices and gadgetry are not a must have survival tool FOR ME. In fact, they drive me crazy. It's simple and quiet without them. Very lovely and peaceful life you have. You're not homeless. You're happy full!
I love her honest reminders at the end: so many older women are turning to this because it's all they can afford and ALSO they still want an interesting life. I may be in that position someday, and so I collect materials for a build in my storage room and each of these videos shows me what I might need to be scavenging for as I prepare for that eventuality. Thank you not only for the tips, but for the courage that you lend to others. Happy trails🙂
Hi Ryla, That’s a really good strategy. Maybe you’ll hit the road even if you aren’t in that position someday? Thank you for watching and commenting - it means a lot. ❤️
Hi, dear ones, Kris here. The holiday season for those of us on the road lends itself to new ways to connect. It also heightens the awareness of people living alone, often cold and in darkness in their cars or tents or sleeping bags. I have a favorite way to reach out without singling out individuals. I am passionate about libraries and after asking permission, I bring trays of party treats to any library willing to over them to their patrons. The staff often know the stories behind that elderly gentleman in the corner or the woman working the jigsaw puzzle. They know just the right way to encourage them to partake. May each of you be warm. May each of you be safe. And, may you all have enough.
Hello Kris👋🏻 it's a pleasure meeting you and getting to know such a down to earth person. We reside SE of AZ state., next time you hit the state! Stop and visit, save on gas, laundromat, on food and water. I don't cook either, but my amazing husband is almost a chef. I find that we share so many likes and dislikes! Admire your positive views on life.
Yes living in the usa...has its beautiful surroundings...but at an enormous expense!!!...so great alternative way to have it all...with very little...❤
I don't get that, my son makes far more than me and other than a brief time when I lived with him and his partner and I contributed to the groceries my son pays for every movie and cafe bill for us both when we go out to enjoy time together. He knows I sacrificed so much when he was growing up and this is one of his ways of showing his appreciation... this woman lives in a friggin van because she has no other choice, they should be shouting dinner for her.
Hi all! Just letting you know that I am headed into Florida to do some volunteer work. That is another bonus of living in a van. We can get to the locations quickly and get boots on the ground.
Kris I have watched many Van/Schoolie/RV videos, and yours was the Best!! You are such a Lovely Soul! Your fun, know what you want, and now have the Freedom to Roam. I am 67, raided Special Need Twins, I still have my son with me at 32 years of sge. I do everything for him, and he is non verbal. I sold my home, bought a 5th Wheel 36 feet that we live in with 4 mini dogs and an African Grey Parrot. I bought a Casita for us to have mini get aways, which I have yet to do. Your so much fun, and happy with your decision to be sensible living in your homey van. I think it's funny your kids were trying to live that life in YOUR VAN! 😆 HAPPY TRAILS YOUNG LADY!!❤️
I agree that this is the real life in the van. I appreciate that you showed us how you can live on the road realistically. Kris has such a kindness about her and she really did great at showing us her home. Thanks
I love everything about this. I feel like Kris is a long-lost sister!! This van is so simple yet functional!! She’s brilliant. I love her thought process. I hadn’t considered going so simple on the van I plan to live in eventually, but it makes complete sense!
I bought a 2007 Chevy 2500 van for my 3 dogs lol. They love it. But it was in terrible shape mechanically and has cost me a lot. Shame on the dealer. But I have made the inside comfortable so we can visit my sis. I use a bucket with a toilet lid if needed and use cedar chips and works well. I even made one of my house toilets into a compost toilet for if the power goes out. Use the cedar chips as well.
Some of the younger people on the road live this way by choice to save money. They have far more technical skill and have found careers that are quite suitable for working remotely on-line. It's a win all the way around, saving money and exploring the world.
Hi Sam! Yes, affordability, ease of build, and efficient systems are really important to know about as more people find themselves living in vehicles without much opportunity to figure it out ahead of time. Glad you enjoyed the van tour with Kris! Thanks for your comment. Be Well,
What a beautiful soul she is! She has a beautiful home on wheels! I am where she was, right now. I am stuck in cold Minnesota in my big home, I need to sell, give away, donate, everything except what I need. I am planning on selling my home and venturing out to warmer country and do much exploring! It may take me a year or so, but I am going! I want that kind of life style so bad and need it more than ever! I’m 61, soon to be 62 and it’s time for me to do for me, what will keep me at peace inside n out! I have much to get rid of, but it is going to happen for me! God bless all you women that are out there enjoying your freedom! ❤
Hi Linda! I totally relate. Have you seen the videos in my playlists, “Personal Messages”, and “Downsizing”? I think you’ll get a kick out of the similarities 😉
Compost toilet is perfect with the pine pellets. I had a chemical toilet that I actually traded out for the compost toilet, easier to clean easier to maintain.
You know I'm in my '50s and I've had three jobs with cleaning job on the side and I've always wanted to travel and the way you women are doing is exactly the way I want to be doing it and now you're out there doing what I wanted to be doing. I want to get a vehicle and start hooking up with all you ladies out there and living our lives on the road because it is incredible. We miss so much being at home working all the time. We miss this beautiful planet❤🎉
I admire the older single female van /car/RV dwellers. I think as a society we need to start seeing the difference between homeless and houseless. You have chosen a lifestyle that allows you to maintain your independence and still live a rewarding life. Kudos to you for having a home, it just isn't a house.👍
The reason I use and promote the use of the word homeless is to help the public get a clear view of how many people have no way of ever having a secure place to live. Our government, social services and media count only the highly visible homeless and overlook the teen sitting in a van outside their college or the lab tech living in the parking lot of the hospital or the teacher entering the school gym to get a shower before class. The more of us that stand up to be counted, the more services will be provided. We are willing to work but we desperately need plentiful public showers, public wifi, mail service, laundry and safe parking. I am homeless.
@@krispavek221 oh I am sorry if I spoke incorrectly.I apologize. I thought that being in your van was by your choosing so that you were able to do what you wanted to do, eg: travel, visit and explore. I did not understand that it was a forced issue. Now understanding your situation better, I can see why you use the term homeless and your desire to advocate for more services. Wishing you the very best.
@@MVonHenne I understand. We in vehicles are usually forced into the situation. I knew the amount of my ss check and began my search for a used van about 2 years before being told I was no longer needed at my job.
I enjoyed your video. I always learn something. I’m 69, and have been researching this lifestyle since 2015. I’ve traveled since age 19 when I married a truck driver. Within a few months of married life we started traveling cross country. We did that for 4 years before children came along. I collect paper maps. I regret not keeping the ones from the 1970’s that were marked of places I’ve traveled. I now use the tattered ones to cover vegetable cans to use to hold office supplies, paint brushes, cleaning brushes at kitchen sink and many other items. I’m a retired nurse that worked in Behavioral Health for 30 Plus years so I know self defense techniques. If you’re ever in Greer’s Ferry Lake area of north central Arkansas contact me. It’s a few hours south of beautiful Eureka Springs. Happy and safe travels.
I wish I were younger ( I’m 77) and new about van life. I watch all the videos and it really calls to me. I inherited a lovely mfg home which I’ve remodeled to be a beach house effect. I love it, good neighbors, a little rescue dog and friends. I’m lucky, I know. If my home is ever destroyed in a hurricane (I’m in Florida), I’m getting a van
Persons who are priced out of the housing market, are classified as homeless in order to get a clear picture of the need across the nation. It is important to be counted so that cities and states can allocate funds for shelter and review housing policies. One contributer to the lack of housing is the rise of Air BnBs. Cities like Eureka Springs can no longer meet the need of local workers to have housing because the beautiful, historic cottages are all BnBs.
Thank you for mentioning Selma.. visit there a few years ago … Lord she cracks me up, girlfriend said she ain’t cooking… lol. I love the simplicity… the end made me cry I see she now needs a new van, thanks for posting her gofundme..

Even if I added more it would only be a luxury because what you have done is meet all the necessities- I love the back door security..haven't seen that until now...I could keep on I love all the insights on the van and the possibilities to help others by showing up literally! Thank you for your wisdom❤❤❤
Thanks for sharing info on the houseless. I believe that if you have stable, reliable and safe shelter - you have a home. It may not be the one others want, or what you dreamed of, but it's home. When you don't have stable, reliable and safe shelter, you're homeless. I lived in a converted bus for about a year and a half, and it was wonderful. When I had to give up living in the bus, I felt homeless. My next home was something more conventional, an apartment. I preferred living on the bus in the woods. AND A HOME DOES NOT HAVE TO BE STATIONARY!!!
She sounds very happy with her choice . Very pleasant personality who is at peace with her choice. I love that vanlife, carlife and shopper type jobs are now a solid option for those who want or need them.
If Kris was on TH-cam, i would subscribe! She is a great motivator and has adventures to share. I love her energy and desire to help others. Introvert or not, she is a good speaker. You go girl!

Hello Kriss. I've been 'houseless' for a while. I appreciate your public servant announcement about "invisible homeless." CA rentals are exorbitantly HIGH! I'm 62 & find it hard to grasp working for pay & then give so much of it for a place U spend a small portion of time in. ☹️☹️☹️ I've been without a brick & mortar home for awhile now. I've lived in shelters, transitional homes/centers .....and the problems there is a lot of the residents are substance abusers & or have mental illness issues. I'm always the odd ball & get attacked bc I don't drink alcohol or smoke (anything). My mind feels free when I'm in my car - no disturbances! I can pray aloud, meditate & FOCUS! I'm praying now to be led to the right van for me. ThanX again for sharing.
I'm impressed! Not as much with the build, after watching hundreds. I'm impressed with Kris! What a cool lady! And I'm with her on not cooking!if I want something hot, I'll go get it. I'm very happy with cold and unheated canned food. Love the baby food idea!
Great van non-build. She has everything she needs and it is so well organized. Love the beautiful sink. Such a smart idea leaving that gap beside the bed so she can escape quickly if need be. She has such a delightful personality.
Inspirational, attitude, resourceful, truthful. Al lot of us Seniors are trapped in public housing !! Yes l want families to have housing also. Lots of good wishes
This is a great video, on a great build, with a great lady!! I've subscribed!! I love the idea of screwing the baskets to the shelf. Using the horse stall pellets for the potty is a fabulous idea!
Thank you for this awesome video and tour. I would suggest making another video with just the end part so that people who may not watch a van tour video might still listen to her important message about homelessness. Thank you so much! 💓
OMG love her!!! I always wondered why people put so much money into a build when they have everything already at there fingertips. Couldn't understand why someone would spend that much money on a nature's head if you still gotta dump it. Luggable loo is just fine. She shows that you don't need all of that to live. So awesome!!! Sooo going to look for something like that too. Haven't found the right one but I will. And I hope I hook up with this beautiful wonderful woman. She's my inspiration!!! Thank you!!!
I love this so much, thank you for sharing! I too am being overwhelmed by all the power options and that is what is keeping me off the road, so I really appreciate knowing there are these options. THANK YOU
Sue, when you get on the road you will meet other van dwellers that will be willing to show you what they chose. Depending on the climates you are in, you may decide you do not need heating or cooling or lights. Starting with nothing and slowly adding what you decide you need is a good way to go. Best of luck and fun to you.
You dared to admit "your addiction"! I LOVED April Cornell brand circa 2002 and squealed out loud when I came across a pale lavender lace top in my exact size at a yard sale 20 years later! Good things do come about with patience, evidently!
Ooops, trigger! I got so high on the fact somebody even recognizes the "brand name" drop that I forgot to give kudos to this really genuine sharing of your quiet, reserved life. Thank you!!!
As a former owner of a staffing company I wholeheartedly suggest contacting either a locally owned or national al temp staffing company to get short to long term temporary work - some of the assignments are only a day or 2 or can go longer…and if a national company then when you move to a new location you are essentially still their employee (you will receive multiple W2’s for each state you work)….love your van and all the suggestions, thank you for sharing! You are NOT homeless - you are a proud & self sufficient/relient nomad!
Thanks Kris for the wonderful insight fullness of what is important to be in this life and live it with dignity and respect. You really have opened my eyes and made me think even if I’m not considering a van life there were lessons to be learnt. Your an amazing lady and I wish you all the best with your endeavours 👍👏🙂

I am rooting for you! I hope you get into a van soon : ) Thanks for watching!
I ALWAYS THOUGHT that SUPERWOMAN was a cartoon--but it's not! YOU ARE a SUPERWOMAN! THANKS FOR THE TIPS!
Ahh, you made me blush.
"volunteer" - what a great way to be useful
And there are so many ways to volunteer. Any interest one has can be made into a volunteer opportunity. Like playing chess? Find some elders or school age kids and make a chess club. Anything at all
Kris is an easy person to visit with and learn from. I listen to some nomads over and over and Kris is one of them. Thank you for this tour and interview.
Couldn't agree more! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the feedback! Iishana made it fun.
Hearing her speak about how her children came to see her made me cry. Beautiful ❤
I was a bet jealous of the nice tent I put up for them. But I am too creaky to sleep on the ground.
*lol she is so funny, she doesn’t cook. I’m so happy that she is doing what she loves to do*
I LOVE that you do not have all the electrical and device "stuff." My family thinks I'm nuts because when I take off in my van I don't take modern life with me. Devices and gadgetry are not a must have survival tool FOR ME. In fact, they drive me crazy. It's simple and quiet without them. Very lovely and peaceful life you have. You're not homeless. You're happy full!
Exactly. No shade on those that do have the gadgets, we all make the choices that feel right for ourselves.
All the wiring and inverters and gadgets are pretty intimidating, I’m glad I found this video.
Loved this video. Kris's comments about homelessness were so heartfelt, she is so wise and sincere. Thanks for sharing your experiences.
Thank you for watching and for your kind comment, Ansurio.
I am often so sad and frustrated after meeting our elderly and our very young people that have no chance of having a small house or apartment.
It is tragic, a travesty, social insanity. Even more so when we realize there are plenty of physical resources to build with!
You are great at making people feel comfortable when you are filming them.
Thanks, Clara!
Thank you Ryla. There is good company out here on the road.
Yes, there sure is ❤️
Hi, dear ones, Kris here.
What a wonderful way to offer caring and respect. Thank you for the inspiration! Happy Holidays
Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Stay warm, stay dry, stay safe...
@@lillvill6403 thank you. I am in the Parker area until early Jan
Are you referring to Eureka Springs, Arkansas?
LOL!! "I fed the kids for 20 years but they still want to eat." PRICELESS!!
And it never stops. Ever. Haha
There's no cooking like mom's cooking❤
My sense of humor!!! Love it!!!
Yes! Thank you for doing this important work. Being nimble enough to get to where help is needed is a huge bonus! Be safe.
You're an inspiration Kris. If you find yourself in Toledo, you have a friend here who would be happy to open their home and driveway to you.
@@Lobaby55 thank you so much. You have been a very busy lady. I hope you are able to get on the road and have time to put yourself first. Best wishes!
@@NosyHausfrau what a delightful offer. I will remember if come that way. Thank you.
I agree that this is the real life in the van. I appreciate that you showed us how you can live on the road realistically. Kris has such a kindness about her and she really did great at showing us her home. Thanks
Faye, thank you so much.
I love everything about this. I feel like Kris is a long-lost sister!! This van is so simple yet functional!! She’s brilliant. I love her thought process. I hadn’t considered going so simple on the van I plan to live in eventually, but it makes complete sense!
Kris I love how you didn't need electricity and manage really well with the battery and fairy lights.
And the fairy lights are so whimsical. They make me smile.
Great spokesperson for the invisible homeless! God bless her and keep her safe!
Thank you so much.
God bless you Kriss !
I love she did this herself. My favorite is the tin back splash and wash bowl.
I was delighted to find that fake tin!
The pine bedding is a game changer. It does not smell even if you don’t tie up the bag, in anticipation of using it again in the night
That’s what I use in my minivan and also for my cats litter box
Truth!
As a horse owner, I agree that this is an excellent product for composting waste of any kind!
Amazing. This is the absolute simplest more effective build and lifestyle ever. Congratulations to Kris on this astounding achievement.
Thank you, Tim.
Omg she is so down to earth. She’s my twin. I use those pouches from the baby aisle. I love love love the simplicity of her build.
I absolutely love Love this woman and her carefree personality!! Her van matches her so well ! It’s awesome
One of my son's told me that the inside of the van looks like a unicorn threw up in it. Perfect description. 🥰
I love that you’re covering a very accessible way to live in a van since many people may be forced into this option
I used the estate sale method and cleared the big items out in a day. It might work for you. Best of luck, see you on the road.
Same here ☺️
I'm in Central Florida
Convenient location for a pitstop!
I'm praying for my life to begin 🙏🙌❤️
Before it's too late.....
And ends
Hi Lynn, Have you made some progress?
one of the BEST interviews/tours I’ve watched in 4 years!
Thank you.
Wow! I am so glad you found us!
This is what I use for cat litter and also used it in my mom's potty chair when I cared for her.
Kris is my cousin!! Way to go Kris!!
Hi Richard! It is good to hear from you.
Cool!
And she’s my mom!
All these grateful comments are amazing.
You lucky girl!
@@GodlessArtistlucky to have a Mom! Make sure to treasure her!
Compost toilet is perfect with the pine pellets. I had a chemical toilet that I actually traded out for the compost toilet, easier to clean easier to maintain.
Much simpler isn't it!
You can do it!
That part of Arkansas is simply stunning.
Bought an RV when I retired and recently put it in storage to travel in my Honda Fit. I am having the best time.
🤣
It is mostly fun!
What a brilliant build home on wheels. Well done lady.
Stay safe on your travels.
You could try magnetic hooks for the pouchy thing on your back door. I am starting to use them a lot in my van.
The message at the end was the best. Fab interview as well.
Thanks for watching!!!
I think she's a fabulous lady. She's real, she's honest and she's fun! 💛✌️
I enjoyed meeting Kris and seeing her van. Wonderful!!!
Thank you, Narelle
Love, you are not homeless! Your home is beautiful and nature is your yard.
Thank you for mentioning Selma.. visit there a few years ago …
Lord she cracks me up, girlfriend said she ain’t cooking… lol. I love the simplicity… the end made me cry
I see she now needs a new van, thanks for posting her gofundme..
Thank you for your kind words, Marcia ❤️
@@BlueWonderLady hey quick question is there a way I can contact her, email? … I saw her in Vermont on the news helping with the floods .. what a kind woman… .. she still needs $6000 to get her van completed, would just like to know and support her …
Thank you for the smile.😊 I still do not cook.
I loved this! I've watched so many through the years and I love the simplicity! Even if I added more it would only be a luxury because what you have done is meet all the necessities- I love the back door security..haven't seen that until now...I could keep on I love all the insights on the van and the possibilities to help others by showing up literally! Thank you for your wisdom❤❤❤
Thank you for your comment. It was fun sharing my van with you!
What a wonderful and kind mindset
If Kris was on TH-cam, i would subscribe! She is a great motivator and has adventures to share. I love her energy and desire to help others. Introvert or not, she is a good speaker. You go girl!
Yay for thoughtful and brilliant introverts! ✨
Yes!
I love this! I hope some day I am camped by Kris. I learned a lot. Also gave me such a wonderful idea of ways to have a place to park and park safely to check out different places. ♡♡♡
I would be happy to have your company!
That's wonderful Joanne! I am so glad you enjoyed the tour and getting to know Kris a bit. She's pretty great!
Hello Kriss.
I've been 'houseless' for a while. I appreciate your public servant announcement about "invisible homeless."
CA rentals are exorbitantly HIGH! I'm 62 & find it hard to grasp working for pay & then give so much of it for a place U spend a small portion of time in. ☹️☹️☹️
I've been without a brick & mortar home for awhile now.
@@krispavek221 love you already

What a sweet lady, she is the type I love to meet when on the road. Bless her and keep her safe.
The humanity in this woman is exceptional!
Well, most of us are human. Haha, but no joking, most humans seek to be kind.
The best low cost van semi-build I’ve seen. Makes me more inspired to get myself into a van and hit the open roads. Thanks for sharing 😊
That’s great, Lillymae! You Can Do It!
And it is easy to add items if you find you can't live without them. I love the simplicity.
That’s a great feature. The freedom to change things around is important.
Great van non-build. She has everything she needs and it is so well organized. Love the beautiful sink. Such a smart idea leaving that gap beside the bed so she can escape quickly if need be. She has such a delightful personality.
Glad you liked it!!
Inspirational, attitude, resourceful, truthful. Al lot of us Seniors are trapped in public housing !! Yes l want families to have housing also. Lots of good wishes

Hi Alice, So sorry for the delay in my reply. Did you figure out how to subscribe? Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this awesome video and tour. I would suggest making another video with just the end part so that people who may not watch a van tour video might still listen to her important message about homelessness. Thank you so much! 💓
That is a GREAT idea! Thanks ❤️
I hope all your plans become adventures.
@@krispavek221 Thank you. It is beyond scary and I have nothing to fall back on.
It is nice to meet another April Cornell fan!
Thanks for the giggles ☺️
I darn sure needed it!!!
What an amazing person and personality! Thank you, Kris!
Great suggestion!! Thank you 🙏
Thanks Kris for the wonderful insight fullness of what is important to be in this life and live it with dignity and respect.
