Hello dear, I love your beautiful, cosy home and wanted to encourage you and to say to please ignore the hateful comments - people, what is your basic problem? I’m shocked at how rude people can be, but sadly, these cowardly comments are most abundant when they know they don’t have to say it to your face. Ignore them please. There is a great sense-of-entitlement in North America and it’s evident with these harsh comments. In other countries, your home would be (and is) paradise.
I believe the Walton kids (though fictional, but true to the time period) also shared bedrooms and young kids are fine in one space for now. Of course, when needs change and plans change, the kids may want their own space. Maybe at that point they will be able to help build one. However, the disconnect between many families these days is due to the kids all having anything they want and being glued to their phones/TVs/social media and it has not worked out well. Anything different than this (imagine, reading books) is an improvement. Scoffers, take note and invest in a self-help book while you look in your own mirror.
These days, many people wrongly worship their kids and the kids become the centre of the universe. I completely disagree with that rude comment about swapping rooms and bathrooms. You are the parents and your needs also count, since you, not the kids, are the head of your house. It’s like how you should put the oxygen mask on yourself before you can help the kids if the plane is going down.
I’m with you about washing dishes by hand. There is something so nice and therapeutic about it, most times. A time to reflect and look out the window and think about the day. A time to slow down. My husband and I live small, by choice, and it is fantastic. I never felt right about having rooms that were not used just to keep up with the ridiculous status quo. Freedom is so much better. And yes, when you live rural, you need lots of food storage space because eating is more important than having a separate room for each kid.
Press on and don’t dwell on some of the loser comments here. What a blessed home you have made for your family. Hugs to you all and God bless.

On 35 acres the kids will find a place that will become their little retreat spot. Our family moved out to the country into a tiny house and 3 of the 4 seasons the only use for the bedroom is sleeping because we're all outside working or playing.

    • @tinyshedlife

I think this is brilliant! We are a family of 8 (1 child is grown so 7 in the home) and we just sold our 3k plus square foot house and bought a camper. We sold or gave all of our household items to families in need. We decided memories are more important that things.. so all of our kids sleep in the bunk room in the camper and we intend on traveling and paying off all debt so we can build our next home (also without mortgage) on land and start our homestead. Being reliant on yourselves and not the big G is the best way to live in my opinion. For the naysayers.. they are siblings.. my husband was active duty military for 10 years and grown men and women shared barracks and tents on deployments... Id say as kids it just makes them understand and respect each others smaller space so that theirs is also respected. You do you mama.

That looks really nice and we can tell your family has worked so hard. When the boys get older, put another small bedroom shed for them outdoors. What a life to be living with such outdoor space and the comforts of home. When I was a child, we slept outside all the time in tents, on the ground, in the car. It was a glorious childhood in the late 60's early 70's.

To some people complaining about "to much" room for food storage: this is a working farm. They grow a lot of their own food. Of course they will take care of their supplies in a more professional way.
And to the others grumbling about the living quarters for children: I do not know this family. But taking the information given in this video, the house is still a work in progress.
By the way, Millions of families worldwide do not live in huge houses.

@@tinyshedlife I love doing up floor plans and even do them of my own home when I want to change the furniture placement. What I do is get a pad of 1/4” graph paper where each square represents 1 square foot. Measure the rooms, put in things like windows, doors and their swing direction, switches, plumbing, bearing walls, etc. and work around those things if you can as they are expensive to move. Then measure the beds and other furniture, sinks, tubs, washer/dryer….you want in there and make little cut-outs of these items from the same graph paper (which is to scale) and then you can place these cuttings in different configurations before you make a decision or take down a wall. My hubby is a carpenter and I’m the one who comes up with all these ideas for change and this has helped immensely. It’s fun too. 🤗

Sensible suggestion - in the UK male and female children aren't supposed to share after 11 years of age. It's not so much that boys have bad thoughts (as a previous viewer stated), but rather accepting that once puberty hits, males and females have different needs and requirments for privacy.

My husband watched my video before I posted and said "Is fantastically a word?" I don't think so, but maybe I'll coin it. Thank you for noticing the good. I hope you can accomplish your minimalist dreams in the coming year. I read a book called The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up. It's the KonMari Method. You really only need a few chapters, it gets repetitive, but it really changed my way of thinking about all the stuff. I implemented her method the entire year before we moved and it was and still is a game changer!

wait, so you have a huge bed and plenty of windows, an office area in your room, walk in closet, and a huge ensuite bathroom...but the kids are mixed genders in triple bunkbeds/beds on the floor with one small window AND the laundry machines in the room AND YOU SAY THAT THEY EACH HAVE A SHELF THAT IS SMALL ON PURPOSE FOR THEM TO DECIDE WHAT IS IMPORTANT AND NOT IMPORTANT because it's for their indoor needs when not outdoors?

In the UK it is illegal to sleep kids over 15 in the same room if they're opposite sex. I'm also a tiny bit tired of seeing these large families where mom and dad live like royalty whilst the kids 'make do' with what they're given and it's branded as some kind of character building. It's a bit odd to have so many children and not try to treat them better. This is giving mad Mormon vibes and I don't know why. I don't want to judge, or hate, but I'm getting an odd vibe from this set up. Absolutely HAPPY to be proven wrong and shut my mouth about it.

Our room isn't very large-it's about 14x15 at most. I work from home and need the space, and I also wake up at 5 a.m. or earlier to make bread and other things from scratch for my family, which can be noisy in the kitchen. It’s not ideal to wake the little ones every morning. The room serves as a bunk room, which is still more than what my siblings and I had when our divorced parents struggled to provide a stable home. We moved from one relative's house to another when we were kids. Your assumptions could be hurtful to those who are working hard to provide a home for their families. My intention is to inspire people to make do with what they have. Families have lived in single-room homes for centuries. I’ll pray for happiness and peace in your life. Have a blessed holiday.

Sarah, your home and land and lifestyle you are providing your children are awesome! I don’t normally comment on TH-cam videos but when I saw the pile on of comments about the children’s room I felt compelled. I’ve heard other TH-camrs mention that you can have ten positive comments but one negative one will still bring you down.. so I want to help toward the positive count.
When I saw this video I simply saw an inspiring and cool home build that I excitedly shared with my husband.
I am one of six children. I definitely grew up in a different situation where past the age of five I had my own room as I was sandwiched between a bunch of boys. I absolutely loved my childhood growing up in a “big” family. I craved the relational closeness of my brothers who shared rooms. I can’t speak to their experiences of sharing but you better believe I spent as much time during the day in their rooms as I could!
I now have a 7 year old daughter of my own. If we let her, she would spend every night of the week sleeping in our bed over being alone in her room. From what I’ve seen, children crave relational closeness, not personal space.
You seem to exude joy in this video which I can only imagine you pass along to your children. That is what is going to sustain your children, not their own rooms.
As an aside, our family loves to camp and backpack. It is some of our favorite times as a family and with friends. And we choose that for leisure.. probably because the rest of our lives can be so unfortunately disconnected from nature. It’s wild to me how narrow a view we have as western moderns of what is acceptable as a home.
I would imagine the laws in the UK some commenters mentioned about sharing rooms are to protect against cases of neglect which is clearly not something happening in your home.
I hope you find this comment encouraging. I know you know you are providing well for your children, but after that barrage of comments I figured some affirmations could be helpful.

Great comment! It would be such fun sharing a room as a kid - imagine the tents and little forts that could be made, reading books under covers with flashlights... All the good stuff. Makes me question where that social construct of each child having their own rooms came from - perhaps invented by government (or media) so they can charge more taxes. The older I get, the more I see the “norm” I was taught to believe needs to be challenged on every level.

He said he had his own room growing ( oldest) and his uounger 2 brothers had to share. So i asked him are you as close to your 2 brothers as they are to each other , he said no. Sharing a room having a place where you know someone will be there at the end of the day to share snd talk with or just laying on the bed in quietness! I shared with my sister till i got married! We fill ours up throughout the day, washing large items by hand if needed, and run it every night. We invested in a quiet one- I have to look at the indicator light sometime to see if it’s actually running. In the morning the kids get up and put away all the dishes while I get breakfast going. A lot of the comments with suggestions on maximizing your space are very good ideas, and I really do think you could separate the boys and girls if you move your laundry. I'm 68 and have 4 kids who are grown, now with kids of their own. One thing I can share with you from my experience is that grown children will be more than happy to tell you all the things you did wrong when you were raising them. (I dont know how old your children are I've just happened upon this ONE video) but you said your wanting to redo the bathroom/laundry I'd take that opportunity to divide up the space boys/girls (Until they are older and want their own rooms). I wish I could actually draw you up something (I've got several ideas on how you could divide that space up to have enough room for everything).
1)Remove the laundry into the mudroom. (Atleast for now)

That is a hugh porch. Can you build walls and make two rooms. Or do laundry room outside. Just a thought.

    • @tinyshedlife
      @tinyshedlife  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

We had bought all the supplies to push the kitchen forward onto the porch and have the cool pantry onto the porch next the pantry. This also meant I wouldn't have to go outside for food. Then the girls room would be where the pantry is now with a door from by the laundry instead of outside. Lots of issues with beams from the porch interfering with knocking down the wall plus adding a massive header etc. It just wasn't practical. But my first dream!! Had to bless and release that one.

At some point in time the children will have to be separated...privacy will eventually have to become a priority. Surely you understand that. I also raised my 5 in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath...although sleeping arrangements were a little different, with the two youngest sharing my room. You quickly learn how to organize and de-clutter, and the children learn to clean up after themselves. Wasn't easy...and you get a kudos from me.

Thank you so much! It's not the "norm" but I've never really wanted to get in line as a kid, teen, or adult! Fun fact, I didn't have my own room until I was 19 and then married at 23. So my privacy was very short lived 😂

To manage sand, build stairs made of iron grates. Most of the sand will fall through the grates.

We ordered the first (smaller) shed with the intent of just having a place to sleep when we came out here. After a series of scary events, we decided we needed a change and ordered the second (larger) shed. It was built onsite since it was too big to make it down the roads. I do think we paid more to have to it built, versus DIY, but we did not have the tools or time to build. Good luck with your journey!

Yes, that's why we haven't finished it. As I stated n the video, I'd like to redo the whole space! Getting the farm running is expensive but I'm thinking 2025 will finally be profitable and we can put money towards home projects.

It looks great but I would prioritize the children’s room. My daughter is 10 and she always gets her own room while our boys 7 and 4 share. Maybe put a curtain up or some kind of movable divider for privacy for now and move or block off the washer and dryer.

Foe the mud room you should think about adding floor to ceiling shelving , over over all the walls . I did it myself by just putting up shelfs in our mud room and turned it into a walk in panty, its a game changer on giving more space/ storage
