Happy Wednesday! Beast was definitely an overlooked show. People remember it for the trombone section only, yet it has so many good parts to it and was probably one of crowns best percussion years (Also those repeated sections just go to show how good their brass is)
The problem is its odd pacing and lack of focus. It never really comes together as something that screams “BEAST!” The opener is amazing and triumphant and loud and totally beastly, but then the second movement is some kind of pseudo percussion feature that doesn’t go anywhere (even Adam was taken aback when it just kind of ends abruptly). It’s just...flat. Then the ballad comes to shift the show energy down even more. But, bizarrely, it’s a Beatles tune that would work great with a story (think “Beauty and the Beast”), but there’s no beast character to focus on. The percussion feature after is a little confusing, as there was already a percussion feature, but they’re so good (and you get a lot more front ensemble) that it works to rev up the energy again. But...where’s the beast? The drumline has been that aggressive all show, but the rest of corps isn’t doing much. The trombones come in to finally give us some loud brass and a rock-out. The platform is rocking and they’re acting like monkeys, so it’s getting back to being beastly. But then it’s over and they rush through an ending and throw up some tarps. The biggest brass hits come during the opener, then wayyyyy later at the end of the ballad, end of the second percussion feature and at the end of the show. That makes the show seem flat with a few spikes of excitement thrown in to keep the audience interested. The “beast” ended up being some people crawling on the ground at the beginning and then some jumping off a rocking platform...and that’s it. This show could have been about vampires (or anything else kind of dark with a soft spot for love) with different props, which means it wasn’t really fully fleshed out. It’s not terrible, it just didn’t deliver on what the fans were expecting.
@@michaellinnehan9589 So well performed, but so weird. I never felt like this show had a chance to win and the design was severely lacking focus. I remember them trying to explain what Beast meant even up to the end of the season. I never got it either.
I honestly only just started loving this show. I remember when they announced it I was like “Hard pass”. Everyone is right about the lack of focus and flow with the show. I think the exceptional performance by the members made up for the confusion in its design.
I've performed Eight on 3 and Nine on 2 before, and that split section is the mindfuck of all mindfucks. So hard to play it convincingly, I cant imagining doing those marimba runs as cleanly as they do.
I marched with the guy on the left for most of the video: Randy. He’s always been incredible, and he has some of the best mallet technique I’ve ever seen.
Fun fact: Crown is known for reusing previous shows musical elements, at 14:27 the xylophone run is a blend of the part at 18:00 and the end of their 2016 show. They also had a show call A Sec2nd Chance that reused their closer from a previous show.
1) It’s been 10 years since that Cavaliers show, yet I never knew they played those splits, mainly because the camera is focused on the tenors playing while upside down. That’s also a sentence I never expected to write. 2) Seeing my drum corps’ equipment truck (Glassmen) in the background is a little sad.
@@AdamTanPercussion Robert Marino marched bass 3 the year The Cadets won their 8th gold medal (2000), his co-writer George Clements marched bass 2 the year they won their 9th gold medal (2005). Hence the title: "8 on 3 and 9 on 2"
2018 was the year Crown Drums turned the corner. the balls of the entire book were out and swinging, really a big improvement from their other books, in terms of heavy hiting, and how they scored.
Here’s a video of the first split playing. It was Music City Mystique back in 2004. Two guys split a part and then the ensemble plays it back, starts at 5:18 th-cam.com/video/dWTtP9AQzFA/w-d-xo.html The show is about the seven deadly sins.

Hence the high percussion trophy!
the trombone feature for carolina crown is iconic, but the ballad. it’s a blessing to my ears every time
Hand to hands fam, they're my favorite split
If crown could get their marching as clean as their playing they'd be unstoppable.
petition to get Adam a ticket for the next DCI Champs

Oh no did I get it wrong 🥺 ごめんね...
@@AdamTanPercussion It's all right!
全然大丈夫ですよ!
Fun fact the small brass feature in the ballad is an all female feature which i thought was really cool!

YOU HAVE TO WATCH CAROLINA CROWN 2015! you can find it on Dailymotion. youtube unfortunately copyright strikes it

I love CC but this was the first year that they realized that you also need to have good percussion in drum corps hahaha

loved the clip of you doing the split
Hahahaha I suck thoughhhh
I got chills watching Crown 👑😈

Man, I wish I could've marched in 2012. Got call backs for snare but college me didn't have money or support haha. Rip Glassmen.
the hardest splits were some hand to hands our high school drumline did this year. I'm a freshman, so I'm pretty bad.
lol part 2 of crown 2018 is a very big tease
Fun fact! Robert Marino marched bass drum with The Cadets from 2000-2003! 1 world championship and 3 drum trophies. :)
Ah that would explain his epic split writing haha

@@ToomanyFrancis I actually almost commented this too lol. Bobby is definitely an awesome guy, I marched Crossmen while he was at Cadets.
20:56 😮 He can do weird arm thing
Yes I'm double jointed hahaha

I always wonder how many alternates they burned through from injury perfecting that see-saw guard feature
Aye he hit that at 19:15 tho
FYI, the small brass ensemble during Crown's ballad was all female members of the corps.
Ahhhhh the way you said my name compared to everyone else is amazing 🥰 discord mods love you 🥰
My boring school day just got way better
Thanks for the recommend :)))
Has he reacted to Babylon?
No😔😔😔
He only reacted to the marimba cam

“So crisp and SO TASTY!”
Not sure if talking about music or fried chicken haha
@@AdamTanPercussion Clearly, you were referring to fried chicken :)
Man it’s been so long since I’ve gotten my mallets and played something I don’t think I’d even be able to play my scales 💀
Me too... what are scales
@@AdamTanPercussion Adam, scales are those things you find on snakes...
If you like splits check out Infinity bassline 2015🤙
You should definitely react to felliniesque! It has the record for highest score and is absolutely breathtaking!
When the marimba section has more scrapes than some tenor lines.
Hey that’s my guy Randy on the left🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽.
We gotta get you to react to Crowns “Inferno” show!
here from the discord server 😤😤
You definitely gotta watch Blue Devils 2014, it's the highest-scoring show so far in DCI history!
