Not sure if it's been said or if you were already aware, but that cross stick grip is Gary Burton's grip. Using mallet 4 for inner mallet runs is a jazz vibraphone thing. Since mallet 4 plays mostly melody while the other 3 comp, it's easier to just keep using that mallet for two mallet melody work.
I don’t know if you realized but during the first Rhythm X snare solo they weren’t actually playing. The tenors were playing behind the back wall and the snare ghosted the notes.
The snares were actually playing, however they all have a second snare with a mesh head to provide the effect that was shown. They weren’t ghosting the notes, they were still playing like normal
The reason the Vivaldi portions might sound a bit more modern is because the arrangements were based off of the Recomposed versions of the Four Seasons by Max Richter
Great video! I don’t know if you mentioned this because I skipped the WGI stuff lol (I’m a trumpet player so wgi isn’t really my cup of tea) but the SCV show Force of Nature is based around the four seasons I’m pretty sure. First movement is spring with all of the the birds chirping and a really natural sound with Vivaldi’s spring in the brass. Second movement is summer with the intensity and speed of a thunderstorm. This is probably their most technically challenging movement. Fall is the third movement which is the gorgeous ballad and if you watch an overhead cam you’ll actually see the guard with leaf patterned dresses. Absolutely amazing. Final movement winter is very bright and sparkly with Vivaldi’s winter and snowflake shapes in the marching sections. The very end is a return to spring as a signal that the seasons will repeat. This show is absolutely amazing and it’s is one of my favorite DCI shows ever, as well as my favorite SCV show overall. I discovered it randomly on Instagram a year back and I’ve loved it ever since. Thank you for your analysis and insight, Adam, and if anyone wants to correct anything I said feel free!
Someone else might have already said this: but they don’t play with two grips all the time. Generally the marimbas use stevens (except sections where it makes more sense to use burton like that section with all of the seconds) and the vibes use burton. But... The girl that was center this year was actually missing a finger on one of her hands and had to play burton in that hand because of it. So she played burton in one hand and Stevens in the other
can we talk about how at 5:32 that wasnt the snares actually playing, the quads were behind that wall while the snares had mesh heads on that can only play idk like 70dbs.
Hey Adam, I have gotten past the stage of developing calluses playing Stevens Grip long ago, but I have the problem that my pinky is extremely sore and painful after barely playing long. It's likely because I grip too hard, but whenever I try to loosen up, it makes it impossible to play normally. Any suggestions?
Hey man, I'd say try taping your mallets with a grippy material like tennis tapes if you haven't already, this will mean you won't have to hold them so tight. Also, you can try practicing rudiments with just your outer mallets on a practice pad to get them looser, I did this a lot !
Hey Adam, I'd love to see you review any electronic marimba/xylo's I've seen a few on the market but im interested in seeing your opinion on them, maybe even comparing them to a traditional marimba? Love your content!
I'd love to get one on the show if anyone sent me one! Never considered getting one still as I didn't like using either of the malletstation or malletkat in person
Hey, would you be interesting in watching a synth cam or two? I'd really like someone's opinion on the instrument, who doesn't really know too much about it. Also, lots of people say that synth is an easy, or even lazy instrument....but they are wrong, lol. There are some really, really epic synth cam videos out there, that I think you would enjoy a lot, even though you don't play the instrument! Anyways, I'm pretty new to this channel. don't know how to submit requests (mostly cause I haven't really looked how to, lol). But I was just wondering if you would be interesting in maybe reacting to a synth cam here and there, since people don't really pay to much attention to the instrument, aside from sound effects and piano solos.

YES SCV 2016 is such an underrated show it’s sooo good also correct me if I’m wrong but the worn mallets are supposed to sound like raindrops
Force of Nature is most definitely not an underrated show. It has to be one of the most popular SCV shows of the modern era.
@@NotAJollyPotato nah everyone just talks about Babylon
The snare solo wasn’t played by the snares, that was the quads
That makes it even cooler then haha
Adam Tan yeah it’s stupid impressive
Wait so the snares fake played it while the quads played it in the back?
AuMiPe the snares have a 2nd snare drum with a mesh head
Ben Anderson ok

Haha I know it's Burton grip, I have a video about it and also an interview with Gary on my channel 🤣 but good explanation nonetheless, thanks!

Not 100% sure, but I think they had another set of snares with mesh heads so they could hit the drums
Frank Deleon in their lot vid from finals, you can see they have 2 snares, one with a mesh head
@@benanderson8453 My bad i had seen some up-close videos but I never realized they had another set of snares
At 8:35, if you look at the marimbas, they split the parts, even the chromatic scale
Oh that is some nice splitting
The SCV show uses a lot of vivaldi, specifically the Max Richter re-writes
Scv 2016 is such a great show 😩😩

Ahhh that explains it! Sounds awesome though
Two of my favorite shows, so unexpected

Ah yes I did suspect it had something very imagery heavy in connection to the title but didn't want to call it haha. You did a great explanation!
I swear this guy needs a podcast or a tv show or something
Which is cooler? Playing slap stick in Rhythm X's 2019 show or playing slap stick in sleigh ride? 😂
Playing the water bucket in RCC 2017
Playing in a crashy bongo
The 2nd video is exactly the intro from hym from infinite sky

The guitar player for X went to my high school, and we performed together in out high school group. He is an awesome guitar player!
the mallets at 19:03 are wrapped in plastic and there's a marimba ensemble piece that uses that texture as well, but I can't find it :(
Ahhh I'd love to know what it is if you find it!
@@AdamTanPercussion Found it! th-cam.com/video/HhcVeEK9Rcs/w-d-xo.html they use a bunch of cool sounds in this piece

Yay! Adam is back! How are you?
Can you do a video on 1 handed rolls and how to approach/improve them.
The merch looking goodd
Can’t wait to get those hoodies
I've got mine already and can't stop wearing it even though it's hot ahaha
The mallets around 19:20 are wrapped with plastic to sound like flapping bird wings
Today is a week anniversary since the last episode and when I played along to Fantasia 2000!
1:15 oh shoot thats me
I now know about Rhythm X, and am a fan!

You should watch Cadets 2015 (or 2013) marimba cam!
gotta love when they rep dayton
I would so buy your mallets if u made a series
The first group had 5 octave marimbas at the ends :0
That was the biggest flex of all
Wait, when did you watch SCV 2018- did i miss that- i swear if i missed that- time to rewatch half of your videos
Can you please play the gigue from Bach E minor Lute Suite.

What’s the deal with marching bands not using the extended octave technique 🤔
I thought this was a "you mean they don't all use traditional" comment at first hahahaha
Excuse us for the excessive flexing, but we had no choice #RXB
Flexing is the way ahead 👀
all day

The “worn” mallets looked and sounded like they were covered in plastic wrap.
I cant be the only one that saw Brett at the beginning w the triangle
TRY BLUE DIRV
I’m a little sad that he didn’t notice the “snare break” at 5:30 was actually the quads :(
I dare Adam to respond and tell me a timpani joke
