      What kind of fuel mileage are getting pulling that kind of weight? I have a travel trailer that weighs 7500 and I’m trying to decide if I should go with the Titan or go with one of the other 1/2 ton diesels. I have a 1ton gasser and it hates pulling it.

    Your video was very useful when i had my Cummins XD. I drive mostly in the suburbs/city and only occasionally tow. I loved the Titan XD with diesel but after having emissions issue (fixed under warranty) i learned that my style of driving and modern diesels do not like each other. My nissan tech said that those who really work this truck, tow every day, carry loads never have problems, while people like me are having issues. Well…. I loved the XD so much that i got a gas version! Now i have only one vehicle for everyday and for camping trips.

    Good thorough video with some great tips. Being around diesel motors since I could walk I can honestly say if you treat it right and take care of it anything will last. Diesel engines are very temperamental and are not for the everyday person. One thing I like to do when letting the turbo cool down is if I know I am getting close to my destination I’ll take it slow that way I don’t have to wait as long for it to cool down. Maybe like 30 seconds to a minute instead of 2-3 minutes. I owned a 6.4 for years and never had any issues. I absolutely loved it. All about how you drive it and take care of it. I haven’t personally owned a Titan diesel yet but I have been looking at them because they are cheap and I do like how they handle the few I have test drove anyway. Thanks again for the video.

      @@CountryLivingOnTheFarm the diesel doesn't have a great reputation but it's mostly because people don't drive them enough. It's not an engine you can drive cold. I decided I didn't want to deal with the DPF/DEF system on a diesel And I found a true 3/4 ton truck local for less money.

    I really appreciate your video. I recently purchased a 2017 titan xd with 35000 miles. Driving home other night, I noticed my fuel mileage drop significantly for almost the entire trip home (about 40 miles). I thought I had a problem, but no engine light or anything. I have since learned about the regen system using a lot of fuel as my last diesel was a 7.3L powerstroke and didn't have such nonsense. Upon your recommendation, I got and installed the scan gauge ii and will keep an eye on things. 9 months left on the factory warranty then it's delete city for me. I'd like to keep this truck around for a long time.

    I as well use the EDT treatment great stuff..! I recently had a issue with my fuel filter assembly by the tank in that the top of the housing cracked and was leaking..! Took it to the dealership and they didn’t have any replacements. I at first told them that I replaced the filter and at first they didn’t want to honor the warranty but reluctantly did. After driving it a week while leaking fuel all under the truck they got the part from Nissan and haven’t had any problems thus far. Well until I change the filters again. Something to look out for in the future.

    • @works4me
      @works4me  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lane, I hadn't heard of cracked filter housings yet. It's definitely possible because the filter can be a bear to break loose. If you watch my video on changing the fuel filters (th-cam.com/video/b7n7yyRmj90/w-d-xo.html) you will see I'm loosening the fuel filter with a torque wrench. That was on purpose so I could tell how many ft-lbs it would take to break it loose. The filters were changed the first time by the dealership. I had to set my torque wrench to 60ft-lbs for it to budge that lower filter. Thanks for watching my channel and enjoy your XD.

    One of the biggest problems with the Nissan Titan XD Cummins and other similar diesel trucks that have all the emissions garbage on them is the EGR(exhaust gas re-circulation) system. Now that the fleet is accumulating significant miles, it's being discovered that the soot the EGR puts back into the intake is contaminating the oil and causing premature abrasive wear issues throughout the engine, including rings, bearings, etc., etc.. If left unchecked, most all diesel engines will never reach the kind of mileage the owner expects before an overhaul becomes necessary.
    There are three choices to deal with this problem, you can delete the EGR by removing it and reprogramming or disconnecting it so it stays closed and reprogramming or the easiest and legal solution is to install a 1 micron oil bypass filter. This is a supplemental oil filter that is installed in addition to the normal filter, but unlike the standard filter, it's capable of filtering the soot out of the oil. I have one installed on my truck and my oil literally stays looking like new as long as I change the filter on schedule. There are two systems available that I'm aware of and both are several hundred dollars overpriced, in my opinion. However, filter changes are relatively cheap and can be offset by extending oil change intervals. As for me, I now change my oil at 20k miles, even though it still looks like new oil. I do still change the primary oil filter every 10k as the owners manual stipulates.
    I'm still shocked that Nissan discontinued the diesel Titan XD, considering it was so much bang for your buck compared to the other major brands. I always wondered why they did such an obviously dismal job marketing it. I ran Cummins 6.2's and 6.7's for years, but overall I prefer the 5.0 V8, so I hope that engine will show up again for sale in another truck in the future.

    I have a 2016 SL with 41,000 miles I bought it used with 26,000 and the only problem so far was a NOx sensor. I also use EDT from Hot Shot, and Stanadyne every time I fuel. I get all my fuel at truck stops and only put about 1 gal of DEF (only at the truck stops) when I get the 34% warning, so it doesn't sit for a long time, I never use those boxes! When I'm towing log distance I make sure it's full first. You can save so much money when you get a fuel card from this trucking company (TSD Logistics out of Texarkana TX) I save up to 40c a gallon at times, and it's so easy at the truck stop pumps, Hope this helps, love my Titan!

    I’ve been thinking of going with the XD for my next truck and the diesel. But curious on how much the up keep is for a year. To see if it’s even worth it. Or just go with a 2500 Ram 6.4 gas truck. Thanks. Great videos!

    • @works4me
      @works4me  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Matt and thanks for watching my video. If you are towing at least 25% of the time with a weight equal to or more than your truck, then a diesel is probably good for you. If towing in the mountains then definitely yes. If only towing on occasion then no. The first year is cost me $250 for service. This year at 24 months it will cost me about $600. The third year it will be back to $250. Is it worth it to me? Yes, because I purchased my truck to pull my 7000lb travel trailer all over the country. But, If I only towed my TT within 400 miles of where I live on FLAT ground then I would buy the XD Gasser. The 2021 Gasser is incredible and the Pro 4x has a 2200lb payload. You owe it to yourself to drive this truck and compare to the Ram. Hope this helps.

    • @matthartlage3463
      @matthartlage3463 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@works4me Thanks for getting back to me. Right now I’m towing our Jayco 242bhs with my 07 Dodge Ram 4x4 quad cab long bed. Yeah, but it’s paid for, LOL. It’s been a great truck but it’s only rated to tow 8600 pounds. You figure my wife and I and our 8 year old son, who’s growing daily, it doesn’t take much to push its limits. Some times it feels like the tail is wagging the dog if you know what I mean? My wife and I work from home, so we mostly drive her mini van. But I’m always going after reclaimed wood and towing our camper, I try not to go very far from home. But we plan on making more trips farther away. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @works4me
      @works4me  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@matthartlage3463 So the weight of your Jayco is the same as mine. I recently CAT scaled my truck and trailer and I am close to the max of my class IV trailer hitch capacity(1400lbs) with WDH but not the payload or GVW. With travel trailers, your truck tongue weight or payload is always exceeded before GTWR. I don’t plan on buying a fifth wheel or larger trailer so it’s not a problem for me. If this is you, personally I would go with the 2021 Titan XD Gas PRO4x that has a 2200lb payload and only if needed, bolt a class V hitch on it. Note: You don’t remove the existing class IV hitch as it is designed into the frame structure. The gas XD’s weigh about 6600lbs. So no wagging the dog. Down the road, if you’re thinking BIG fifth wheel, go with a 2500 truck. They all have floating axles. If you’re thinking of fifth wheel mountain towing then a diesel is the way to go. In this case the Ram 3500 Cummins diesel is king. Note: I would make sure you get one with the CP3 high pressure pump. The word is Ram is going back to the CP3 this year (2021). Lastly, I love my XD diesel but I knew exactly what I was getting for a specific need. Some down sides is the small fuel tank and the filler neck is the small size. So you will be using an adaptor to fill at a truck stop or knocking out the restrictor plate (which isn’t that easy). And Nissan won’t support the diesel with mechanics after 2024. Doesn’t mean they can’t work on it though. Hope this helps.

    • @works4me
      @works4me  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching my channel Lola. Click on the link below and you should get a good feel of how the Nissan Titan XD Diesel Regenerates. www.nissantechnicianinfo.mobi/htmlversions/2015_October_November_Issue_4/Diesel_Particulate_Filter.html
      Yes, so if it's an in town drive then just sit and idle for a 1-2 minutes. If traveling on the interstate going 70+ the turbo gets up to about 550-600 degrees. So wait at least 4 minutes.
      Tip. When the truck is regenning in town, the idle will be about 1800 rpms. Also, your mpg on the display will go from say 17 to 12 because of the extra fuel during the regen process. It will gradually go back up though after the regen. A full regen takes about 20-25 miles so it might start regenning as soon as you start the truck to finish a regen cycle that it started previously. As long as you don't put the truck into park, reverse or open a door it will keep regenning.
      Hope this helps you.

    Just bought a 2019 Titan XD diesel a few months ago with 18,000 miles. Use it mostly for daily driving (only 3 miles from work), and towing a small bass boat on weekends usually within town. Was wondering if I should take it out on the highway every month or so to help with the regens?

    • @works4me
      @works4me  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Marty. Unfortunately this truck isn't a good fit for 3 mile short drives. I would purchase a Scanguage 2 or similar so it tells you when your truck is in regen and when the regen is finished. Driving short distances doesnt ever allow the truck to finish a regen. So yes driving it on the interstate would help but a regen last for about 25 miles and you need to know when it finishes. Sorry for the negative reply.

      Hi Ricardo. I don't have this truck anymore. The only reason for selling the XD was because we sold our travel trailer and didnt need a large diesel any longer. I really miss the XD. I had no problems with my 2018 Titan XD for the first 35,000 miles. I loved it. But the last 15,000 miles however I’ve went thru 2 EGR valves that have leaked into exhaust side. 1 turbo high/low actuator and 1 turbo itself after total power loss shutdown left me stranded with the boat. I’ve had it back to Nissan 10 times since. It’s been a turd since the first EGR valve went out. My truck Regens all the time while towing! It used to regen every 500 miles, now it regens every 100 miles. Used to get 18.8 mpg hw, now only gets 14.8 mpg on hw. The Nissan techs tell me the only fix would be to delete it. Hope you have better luck.

      Sorry I don't agree with you. The truck doesn't do everything by itself. If it did, it would not allow you to turn the truck off when the turbo is at 800-900 degrees. This will damage the bearings and then the turbo will go out much sooner. Not knowing when the truck is in regen or even the progression of the cycle is a mistake on Nissans part. Thank you for making this video. The Titan XD is my dream truck, I find the engine absolutely fascinating. My wife and I bought it together, her way of saying I love you!
    I've got a 2019. Bought it brand new, now has 50,000km on it. Averaging 13.36L/100km (17.61 us mpg). We live on a highway so regens usually are not an issue. The sad thing is, the more you drive the truck towards fuel economy the more it regens. I find 80-85 km/h in sixth gives the best economy while doing the regen. I really want to pull a load with it. It was a fun drive in the mountains and didn't regen.
    I buy my DEF from the dealership, using Nissan branded DEF. When it drops down to 20% warning, I put a whole bottle of DEF in. Using Stanadyne Performance Diesel Fuel additive. Mobil 1 Delvac 5w40 motor oil. I do the fuel filters with oil changes, lubricate the hinges. Service transmission and axles together at 30,000km.
    I'm actually impressed with the instrumentation in the Titan XD. The exhaust gas temp gauge seems to be the only one that is a bit of a liar, the rest seems to actually move around in a way that makes sense for the given load. I don't see the need for additional monitoring on a stock truck, but more data is never a bad thing.
