It is clear to me that Tim Daly was the only courageos one.The mob made the wrong decision. They should have stood firm and never submitted. I am 100% sure Linoge would have backed down. He could have taken any child any time, but he wanted their CONSENT. Thats is key. And when he said "Maybe you have tricked yourselves" proves this. You never submit to evil. That is the message of this movie.

@@ETAontheway Stephen King said that in an Interview that the Puritans because they were very devout and religious Christians could never agree to something like that.
5:11 "The gods punish the faint of heart" I think that's how the child was chosen. Whoever went last is the one who would receive the black stone, whoever resisted the most would have their child taken
I think the stone game was merely a rouse. The black stone was always intended for Mike's son. Linoge had all the cards inside of HIS hand in the game all the while and only made them think they had a say in things.
If that mother stood next to her husband they would have said no you abandoned him and then when your son was chosen you begged the man you abandoned to stop him....
The fact is that woman was all for giving up a child, but when it's her own, she backs out. I say the dad should have punched her since he didn't want to risk his son like that, but she did. Frankly if I was in his shoes, I'd rather let everyone go then my own son. Why? Because this is a man who didn't agree to risking his own child up to a monster, who would then in turn raise him into a new monster, the pain of betrayal was incredible and I can only imagine the anger he had for his town and wife, because it was HER choice to agree to the deal. In short, I wouldn't have been surprised if he went nuts and shot up the town. Also, HER son? No way lady, you gave up that right when you agreed to the deal. When you risk your child like that, you've given up the chance to be a parent. A whole town or not, a paren'ts duty should be to their kid first, others second.
I don't think she wanted to give up her child she just thought she would luck out or he would go away period but I wouldn't want to give up a whole town of people I'm sure her son would understand but at the same time I wouldn't want to give up my own child ever id die first my child before me always either way he made it a horrible decision on either side of the coin. This is what truly made him a monster
It seems the story was based on religious themes. When Sodom & Gamorra was destroyed the angel told the family not to look back as they fled but Lot's wife did. That was her home town and they were her people so she turned to salt. Also the daughters husbands didn't want to leave their families either. The mom in this movie was from the island and chose her home town over her own son and husband thats why he divorced her and left. What I find interesting about the Sodom story is the angel struck the men that tride to rape him blind so they never saw what Lot's wife saw when she disobeyed. There's a subplot in the movie about the gay bashers that beat an effeminate pretty boy till he went blind. One of the bashers was secretly "in love" with the boy, seeks him out at the end for a relationship after the wizard outs him and ends up giving him one of his eyes to attone for his crime then kills himself or is killed by the boy. It never says for sure.

Mike Anderson : Well, there's part of that story that's never been written down. After the contest for Job's soul was over and God wins, Job falls to his knees and says, "God, why have you done this to me? All my life I worshipped you and you destroyed my livestock, you blighted my crops, you KILLED my wife AND my children, you gave me a hundred horrible diseases... and all because you had a bet going with the Devil? Well, okay, but all I want to know Lord, is... all your humble servant wants to know is... WHY ME? Job waits... and just as he's convinced that God isn't gonna answer him, a thunderhead forms in the sky. Lightning flashes and a voice calls down... "Job... I guess there's just something about you that pisses me off!"
fun fan theory: Andre Linoge WAS Jesus returned, and he wanted a child i order to be his replacement as martyr. Ralphie would end up leading the new religion and be arrested and executed, dying for the sins of everyone else, just as Jesus had. Jesus had become cold by centuries of watching all his suffering be wasted on horrible humanity and just regarded his destiny and role as saviour as a task he had to fulfill but had no feeling or warmth towards anymore. Hence the Biblical references, the honest judgements of the human failings and the aversion to FORCING anyone to do anything, and the fact his light at the end is bright white. Angelic?
@@dootdoot94xo44 Technically he did. Jesus was the son of, and the embodiment of, God and God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah. Not to mention how he tortured Job based off of a bet with the devil. So yes, this fan theory is reasonably possible.
Did you notice that those that stared at Linoge intently and wouldn't look away and the one person that was too scared to look at him, all committed suicide. The rest who had "normal" reactions under the circumstances lived.

I don't understand why they didn't look to God for help. If the devil exist then so does god. They never even considered asking God for help. What if he was good testing them. I think that would have gave the story a better ending. It was obvious it would be ralphie.
If you mean happier then probably but not better. The story was ultimately about people and humanity/society/morality and less about religion. The devil and religion was just a convenient medium to tell the story through and making it easier to make the point.
