A lot of that can also be said about being fat. Today obesity is just for low-income women, higher class man are fit. It doesn't matter if you wear a patek, you can still be viewed as nasty if you're fat. So go lift and eat less! It will make you look better not just for women but also for business partners.
Disclaimer: I am currently fat, lost 15kg already but my BMI is still above 30. I'm not saying this to hurt anyone, I'm saying because it is true.

Yes, in the grand scheme of things, many of the items we buy in the west is a joke when people around the world live on less than $1 a day.
If I were really looking to show off, there are many brands and style of watches that I could have chosen from.
I have my personal reasons for enjoying a well made timepiece, which I'm not really going to go into here. But I certainly didn't rush out one day and blow my money on a Rolex for the sake of it.
Over many years, I chose to mark personal milestones in life by selling off my old watch, buying a new watch. Each time adding a bit of cash and working my way up to a timepiece that I really enjoy.
I don't choose to collect. I wear the same watch each day, and it brings me joy.
If I were really unable to afford a nice watch, I'd just not wear one. Rather than adorn my wrist with a $2 'shitter' as Archie likes to say.
As for how I choose to spend my money, I do have a nice 5 Series, and that's enough for me, especially since I travel a lot for work, so it tends to live at the airport much of the time, while I drive a rental of much lower caliber.
But my choice of watch goes with me, and I enjoy the beautiful craftsmanship and talent that went into producing this work of art.
And like many works of art, some appreciate it, some are not sophisticated enough to. But what you or anyone else thinks of my watch matters not to me.

To be honest a cheap watch does not make you appear like a cheap feller.. .its a cheap attitude can totally destroy all the money spent trying to look wealthy. Image and character gore hand in hand.

Well - there might be several reasons for buying a "shitter", e.g. needing a robust rocker for a bike tour etc. etc. Furthermore I dont agree with the "shitter"-definition. Recently I bought a minty minty minty vintage seamaster chronograph with the 861-speedy-movement and original steel bracelet for under 2.000 US - definitely no shitter at all.

It's obviously easy to mock "AC3's" delivery, or question why anyone wears a bowtie period, much less a clip on.
There's a lot to be said for a man wearing a quality timepiece. Many people who I have known and respected in life, have a decent watch. It doesn't have to be five figures or anything crazy, but it is pretty sad to be walking around with a gold plated Micheal Kors if you expect to be taken seriously in life.

If somebody has the money, then a high-quality luxury watch is definitely worth it. You look at it everyday, so might as well get a good one that you feel good about and one that you enjoy looking at everyday. If you are broke, struggling to make ends meet, then you obviously shouldn’t get a watch that will make you broke. If you have a lot of money, then who cares go for it. If you work hard and become successful, then reward yourself l. Life is too short
