    Blake’s drumming matched with the disgustingly good sound of his kit is just too freaking good.

    Ever since Colors, each album just builds upon what you've done in the past man. Or perhaps it's more that I have a growing appreciation for your playing as I pick out things I missed on in older albums, which of course leads me to listen to them again to see what else I missed. I think that one can make a pretty sound argument that Blake is one of the most versatile, yet underappreciated drummers alive.

    This was fantastic as always but I have to be brutally honest, the camerawork was really really distracting. I know this film style is super meta right now but recording a guy drumming isn't a great time to try out an artistic style. Everyone who watches this video is just wanting to watch Blake play, not check out cinematography. I'm prone to it as well, but sometimes you just gotta put your camerawork skills on the back burner and focus on providing clear easy to follow shots to convey information in the best possible way. Just like drumming.

    • @erezbader
      @erezbader 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      That'd be my bad dude, and I definitely agree to a certain extent. Truth be told, I was supposed to film this on a different camera/lens all together until about an hour beforehand and just sort of had to wing it on an unfamiliar setup. Sorry some of the fills are cut off - honestly though I think it's for the best, if I captured everything perfectly there would have to be a warning before the video for how dangerously gnarly his playing is!

      I give the original poster a thumbs up cause its a general great point. But you happened to catch me right in the moment of embracing this type of cinematography. Tommy's never been really good on his cleans, you know?! He evolved through the Parallaxes (in Parallax II, we can really call him a singer), but after some fray in the Parallax 2 tour, he started using a more nasal and pitchy clean singing to preserve his voice (he even changed his growls to a less intense approach).
      In the Colors and Great Misdirect's anniversary gigs, he lets himself looser, tho.

    • @keithdafoe9770
      @keithdafoe9770 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Squonk does this imply that the double bass is actually 16th notes, and the floor tom is 32nd notes? Asking for a friend...and maybe myself.

    • @Contrapulator
      @Contrapulator 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's alternating between the floor tom (FT), left kick (LK) and right kick (RK), like so: FT LK FT RK. If you count in 4/4, the snare is playing on 3, and the FT/LK/RK pattern is 16th note triplets (24 notes per bar). That's my interpretation!

    yes, i know why he didn't really abuse double bass anymore like he used to

    • @beto1580
      @beto1580 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He's never abused double bass. Blake always used the right amount of them for the music he plays - though he learned to fill his drumming with other features as well.
      The point is that BTBAM's music is more homogeneous (some might say "simple") now than that flamboyant extravaganza they used to play before. Compare Blot and The Grid (the long, epic tracks from Automata) to literally any other of their epics, like White Walls, Swim to the Moon and even Silent Flight Parliament: the band sound simpler now, and Blakey just aims to find his space in there, you know?!
