    My two favorite drummers, Danny Carey and Tomas. Carey feels like an angel who descended from the sky with his intuitive polyrhythms and spiritual playing. Haake on the other hand plays like he's powering some machinery in the depths of hell.

  • @manjay49

    He is very relaxed. He is actually grooving the whole time, like an R&R or jazz drummer. That is the thing that separates him from other metalist/heavy drummers. And there are lots of ghost notes and subtle accents in his dynamics. He is also a composer and lyricist as well as being a highly accomplished musician. The volient sound and extreme nature of the music tends to "hide" some of these factors. One counter-intuitive way to appreciate him, and the the band more, is to turn the volume way down and listen attentively, as an "objective observer". Later, you can "get into it" and "go crazy". Peace.

      Yes, he struggles sometimes. Sure. And he says that in Bleed he has to use triggers, but only for that track. But his overall approach is to remain relaxed. All the great drummers use this skill.

    • @guiguizondrums4
      @guiguizondrums4 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Totally agree with your groove and ghost notes point. That makes a huge difference. Plus, he's not overplaying on his cymbals, just hitting them so they sound exactly like they should, not like other metal or rock drummers who keep smashing them hard all the time.

    Speed never matters when drumming
    What matters is coordination and separation of limbs
    And don't try to sound better than Tomas Haake, try to sound better than the way you played the other day because if you do that then someday you may even sound better than Tomas Haake because he didn't do this shit in one night
    Just saying this too cuz personally I haven't heard anyone say this is easy but I've seen too many people try it thinking they did it right

    Before someone complains about the cam not synced with the playing in some parts, the playing is still out of this planet.
    Tomas (and Meshuggah) recorded this album live, so some parts do not correspond to what you see in the video (like on 1:50 where he's hitting a crash, and you're hearing a china).
    You're hearing the final mix of the song, so some parts were changed during the mixing process, which is totally natural.
    This guy is my favorite drummer, and this video is just another reason why.

    • @jcschuldiner

      @gaunten 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I am convinced Tomas Haake is a cyborg from outer space sent to guard the Earth, and drumming is just his way of passing the time before he is summoned for his real mission!
