    MESHUGGAH is:
    Jens Kidman - Vocals
    Fredrik Thordendal - Guitars
    Tomas Haake - Drums
    Mårten Hagström - Guitars
    Dick Lövgren - Bass
    Lyrics:
    Clockworks
    Dismantling the clockwork that makes me the cynic
    Pallet, wheel and click
    The properties of my indifference
    Reverse-engineering what makes it tick
    Dissecting the finetuned mechanism
    Rack and barrel, spring and pin
    Its synchronous characteristics
    To kill what makes it spin
    Disassemble this machinery
    Re-program these eyes, undo this design
    Labelled and filed, each part indexed
    Broken to pieces then thoroughly burned
    Deconstruction of what I am
    Buried to make sure he never returns
    Taken apart, defused, blueprints turned to ashes
    Eradicate the last remains, remnants of the insane
    Disintegration, the destruction of me now imperative
    To purge myself of this condition, complete this dissolution a necessity
    Break this deceitful machine
    A lie, what once I was, obsolete instrument
    An outmoded contraption, a malfunctioning device
    That callous self now extinguished, that malignant self now disused
    That conceited invention to nothing now reduced
    Complete disintegration, the destruction of me now imperative
    To purge myself of this condition, complete this dissolution a necessity
    Break this deceitful machine

      Heh... a few years ago I would have totally agreed with you. I've been " self-taught" for nearly 10 years.. and finally something just clicked for me. Its weird.. but I can cover stuff like this no problem all of a sudden. I've always had metronome in my head, since I was in 4th grade and all I could pay attention to was the seconds clicking on a 1980s clock. . but when I started drumming at 18, it took me YEARS to finally just get it. I could always fill the space in time.. it just sucked.
      Just. don't.give . up It may not be sudden. but it will start to click

    He is very relaxed. He is actually grooving the whole time, like an R&R or jazz drummer. That is the thing that separates him from other metalist/heavy drummers. And there are lots of ghost notes and subtle accents in his dynamics. He is also a composer and lyricist as well as being a highly accomplished musician. The volient sound and extreme nature of the music tends to "hide" some of these factors. One counter-intuitive way to appreciate him, and the the band more, is to turn the volume way down and listen attentively, as an "objective observer". Later, you can "get into it" and "go crazy". Peace.

And this is all just his hands! We haven't even talked about what's going on with the kicks. Holy fuck, this shouldn't be possible.

    • @Tintop
      @Tintop 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      i think many people are just "overestimating" Tomas' skills. yes the drumming is basically complex patterns but I don't think that there is any professional drummer out there that could not play this. Tomas admitted in an interview that he's basically not knowing to bits what he's doing on a musical level. He's more of a drummer that plays by feel.
      I think it's more likely that Tomas cannot play jazz drums than another drummer not being able to play what he is playing...
      Tomas is insanely good, no doubt about it, but some people here should expand their horizon drummers-wise.

    • @fiction0711
      @fiction0711 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@Tintop I'm sorry, but that is just dumb. It is very highly unlikely that Tomas couldn't play jazz, as he had mentioned specifically that jazz fusion as one of his influences. Also, his level of limb independence is just top-tier. On top of that, his sense of groove and time is just amazing. Jazz would be a cakewalk for him.
      You might be right that most people overestimate his skill level by saying no one else can play everything he does. Top-level drummers could definitely play them. But the point is, how many people can be considered top-level? Not that many.

    • @iorwethlispuszczy5587
      @iorwethlispuszczy5587 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fiction0711 exactly. Many drummers considered "top-level" could try but would rather fail. What matters most in today's genres (said by a long time deathcore and metalcore fan) is to achieve the highest bpm ratio available. I mean.... Lord Marco Petruzzella (Six Feet Under, Session for latest Rings Of Saturn album, Huhnau Minchal and many other bands) is considered the fastest drummer on Earth... Yes, he is considered top level, but I doubt he could play any Meshuggah, which is based on odd signatures, polyrhythms and so on. I'd just stick to the fact that Haake is out of this world for his technicity, same as Marco Petruzzella is for his speed, Neil Peart was for his creativity and many other top drummers.

    • @iorwethlispuszczy5587
      @iorwethlispuszczy5587 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @LiverHook Placed same goes for any death metal/deathcore drummer though. The point of the comment, imo, was that many people do overrate Haake, but it seems quite difficult to find any other drummer on Earth that would be able to play his complex drum patterns.
      There are lots of godlike drummers in different genres, who can't compete against each other because they are specialized in different things.
      Haake is complex, but rather slow.
      Mounier is fast, but doesn't use polyrhytms.
      Marco Pitruzzella is unreachable with 300bpm and slight complexity of drum patterns and so on.

    It's not even funny how hard it is to drum like this man does. Drumming is already difficult as it is, it takes a ton of practice making each of your limbs do different things independently and not have it sound like sh*t, but he just takes it to a level very few can achieve, even with years and years of practice. You can see how hard he has to concentrate, constantly scrunching his face. Even Danny Carey, who has always been my personal favorite drummer, says he watches Tomas to learn more and improve his own technique.

    Tomas (and Meshuggah) recorded this album live, so some parts do not correspond to what you see in the video (like on 1:50 where he's hitting a crash, and you're hearing a china).
    You're hearing the final mix of the song, so some parts were changed during the mixing process, which is totally natural.
