    Great talk!
I found it amazing that for the majority of the discussion he seemed open to provide ways to test belief but conceded that he’s not willing to think otherwise of his own.

Wow that admission at the end made it all worth it. Good talk!
I also thought that it might be helpful if you try to summarize and repeat back what you think you are hearing them say before asking your next question. I think you did a couple of times here, but a few more might help your interlocutor slow down and be more reflective.

Anthony Magnabosco Good point. Thanks for pointing that out. I can definitely see how that might have helped him feel more comfortable. People feel more safe when they feel understood.

I'm not sure that he's ever thought about his faith quite this deeply before.

AGDinCA I agree. I don't feel like I quite got to his real reason for believing God exists. We talked a lot about the test he proposed, but in the end he admitted that he would never use the test himself. So he had a deeper reason that we didn't address.

Here is something you could try. Immediately after asking him the 1-100 question ask him "How important is it in your life that what you believe is factually true?, with 1 being "I don't care if it is true I just need to believe" and 100 being "It is vitally important that what I believe is factually true" If he answers 100 for both questions then you can say that he must have a very good explanation to justify his answer to the first question.
I would also question his rather arrogant (IMO) assertion that the god he believes in is the same god as every other god out there.
Keep up the good work, you deserve more subs.

"Can you think of an example where you saw a pattern when none was there?"
"Have you ever thought you saw a person but realized it was a shadow, etc. ?"
"Are patterns a reliable method of determining what's true?"

Have you ever tried asking them to ask you why you believe leprechauns are real just to switch the tables and see what kind of questions do they ask you and having them realize these were the same questions you were asking them?

Other people can test their beliefs, but I would never ask myself that question. 🤨

His reality is right. But, he doesn't know why. Is that what I hear him saying?

Go ask a pastor why they believe God exists. I'm pretty sure the weak reasons they come up with will make your head explode.

This was not a mature human comprehensive conversation.
This dude was not genuinely evaluating the questions nd ideas he was being asked.
    So very frustrating
