I just love how u r always looking to enjoy all the local aspects of sailing/boating wherever u are. From the Mediterranean, to canal life in France, to the rivers in Germany, boatbuilding and here the Waddenzee. Not many channels have that diversity.
The Dutch even used this in sea-battles during 17th century. Admiraal Michiel De Ruyter tricked French and English ships in attacking his ships over a shallow and several run aground.
Shallows were used by De Ruyter as a way of defense and forcing the enemy to tack while Dutch ships were able to sail over the shallows the French and English could not follow.
Dutch ships were largely 2-deckers as opposed to 3-deckers from the English and French this also made for shallower ships.

Sailors are adaptable when challenged by the conditions they must sail in. I look around the world and see the different types of boat the sailing conditions demanded and sailors found a design that works. Amazing. Thanks for showing us this adaptation.
my goodness the travelling has the creativity going to new levels, the shot of the cloud reflected around the boat is outstanding and the night shots of the fishing boat passing is just beautiful i was sad to see the boat work put on hold , but with videos of this quality who cares bravo, a gentle relaxing escape from the horrid western Canadian weather thank you fairwinds young lady

I am obsessed with these boats even posted a video a model one a whole fleet of skutjies sailed across the Atlantic to New York.
Anyway my view of the Dutch is that they are geniuses who have created the most beautiful boat ever made. The Royal yacht is a Lemsteraak Groene Draeck (Green Dragon) made for Queen Beatrice its staggeringly beautiful. I don't know why designers won't use leeboards they place their force higher up avoiding a tipping force on the boat.
My experience of running aground in Holland was when my girlfriend and wannabe navigator held the chart upside down as were were crossing a shallow meer. Fortunately all that was required was a vault overboard and a hard push off the sandbank...
I am currently reading a book which you might enjoy: 'Friesland Meres and through the Netherlands' by HM Doughty about spending the summer of 1887 (yes, 1887) sailing his 53ft Norfolk Wherry all around the extensive canals meres and polders of Friesland, with his four daughters, one paid crew, a local pilot and, of course, his butler. No engine, just quant poles for when the wind was unfavourable. He was a serious sailer and enjoyed out-running the tjalks because of their very blunt bows (like Maud) and much smaller sails. It has lots of descriptions of the Frieslanders and their tjalks and smaller boeier craft (and the architecture of the buildings), and is illustrated with pen and ink drawings by his daughters. Recommended!

There are modern scow bow designs for racing so I guess it's more down to other aspects of the design and intended purpose.
That is a totally different experience to anything I have ever had or seen in the waters of eastern Australia. I thank all three of you for sharing this with us.

Wow! The cockpit on that boat looks like it is GIANT sized with PLENTY of room to lie down and sleep comfortably in the cockpit or take a nap in the sun with room to spare!.I love it! All sailboats should have cockpits like that.

These type of flat bottom hulls were also used as cargo ships. Longer then this one offcourse. They are ideal for converting into a houseboat.
My grand-grandfather used to have such a flatbottom cargo sailboat. It eventually ended up as a houseboat in the canals of Amsterdam.
If you like, have a look at the 'Cannice Bannon' channel to see the inside of such a cargo flatbottom (named 'Vrouwe Linda' ) and the proces of converting it into a houseboat. BIG interior space!
@@jfv65 Yes. Thanks. I saw some of the tour of the boat as it was when he bought it. It isn't my cup of tea. There were no seats in the cockpit area for starters. To me the cockpit is more important than the cabin because that is where you are going to be spending the most time during the day anyway while undersail. So it is important that it be comfortable and that the seats have back support. If you are going to be taking friends out for day sails, it is nicer if they have room to stretch out and don't have to be squeezed in like sardines into a tiny uncomfortable unprotected cockpit. Big cabins are of little use when you want to be up on deck enjoying the sail in comfort with friends.
Fascinating to see the traditional Dutch boats. I come from just across the North Sea on the East Coast of England, and there are similar mud flats, in the river estuaries. There, boats are designed with two bilge keels. My parents owned a 30ft bilge keeled yacht, and their permanent anchorage dried out every tide. Thanks so much for the wonderful videos.

I believe the Dutch Tourist board should hire you and Aladino as ambassadors, the only thing I missed was some footage of you doing some "wadlopen". Oh well, maybe some other episode?
They are true ambassadors of the sea. Whether that be the Netherlands or elswhere. The respect is evident!

Got to love the Dutch and the Netherlands 🇳🇱.
Being Dutch, of course we have a perfect system in place to queue for locks. The first boat to arrive docks at the beginning of the waiting dock. The second and third boats tie up to the first boat. The fourth boat takes its place behind the first one, at the waiting dock. Etc. Of course, being Dutch, 90% of boaters completely ignore this system. It always leads up to heated discussion. People who arrive first but tie up in the middle of the waiting dock are surpassed, they then complain about other people not queueing fairly... good fun in summer. We have so much boats on the water on a limited space.
What a beautiful peaceful way to spend a few days on a boat. I owned a Norfolk wherry once and was used to Thames barges. The barges used to dry out the same way. Just the Essex way the same as in Holland.
This video was a wonderful surprise for me! I am Dutch and moved to the USA years ago. In summer my family visited my grandparents in a small shrimp fishing town near Delfzijl and go wadden lopen. We'd wait till low tide and walk on the sea bottom and collected shells and worms for my uncle's fishing. I have so many great memories of those days. Your friend has a beautiful boat. When I was a working man, I was fortunate enough to make several trips to the Netherlands. Our facility was way down in Vlissingen, right at the Belgian border. I fell in love with the Dutch culture, and hope to go back someday. Thanks for bringing back fond memories.

Oh, I can remember grounding our boat in the watten sea in 1991. We only had been farther away from the shore and some 10 cm of water remained, causing a friend to dive into deeper water while chasing our boat dog around and missing the edge of the sandbank ... :-D We had a lot of fun ...

There are places in the Netherlands where you can rent these kind of boats. For example Varskip in Heeg.
"A land where the sea is as shallow as the land is flat" - well said. A stretch, between islands and mainland, of the North Sea that is a branch of the Atlantic, that is part of the single ocean that embraces the earth. We call that first stretch "Waddenzee". In Dutch, to wade is "waden" and that's where it got its name - "wadden" are a biotope where you can wade (zee=sea). As wadden is plural, the singular is "wad", there's this "sport" called "wadlopen" - walking this biotope at low water: part walking where the sandy soil is high enough to be firm at low tide, then there are the soggy sections where you sink into the soil with every step and next parts where you really wade. When your feet/legs sink into the soil, pulling one out for the next step may seriously stretch your knee's connecting tissue so don't do this when it's cold and try to avoid it if possible, or if you need to, try to have trained for those knees to build strength in these tissues. Or else it will turn out to be your Wounded Knee.
Maybe in time, this part of the sea will be converted to living land space.

The UNESCO protected area is about 12 000 km² because this includes the transition area into the North Sea.
It's about 500 km long and on average 20 km wide.
Beaching your friends specially designed flat bottom boat was a fascinating video. I loved watching it and want you to know that I live vicariously through you and Aladino’s adventures!
Loved seeing how the Dutch sail in their home land. The footage of the fishing boat passing by was absolutely beautiful!
Lots of memories. I almost got swept away by the incoming tide as a kid, playing on the sand, too far from the boat. We used to go to the locks to watch the mayhem. great entertainment, especially when the Germans and Dutch start yelling insults at each other.
same here and i still have to stop when passing by a busy lock to watch the spectacle, never a dull moment when the lock-doors open. Especially the men at the wheel nervously screwing things up whilst screaming at their spouses who are waiting with the ropes at the bow....

Maya and Aladino, what a wonderful video you have made of your trip on the Wadden Sea. As a Dutchman who does not live by the sea, I love the wide views of the Wadden Sea and I visit one of the Wadden Islands every year. But the way you portray this magnificent nature area is very special and moving. You also showed that in some places the Netherlands is very crowded and that gallantry is not an innate quality, even among boat owners. Fortunately, however, the beauty of our landscape prevails. Thank you for showing that to the world. I wish you lots of success with the renovation of Magic Carpet II. That too will be a great success and I am already looking forward to the beautiful trips you will be making.

Did you know that these Lemsteraak Boats have one of the most efficient hull shapes ever built? It's fascinating that a 150 year old design almost can't be built better even with our modern technologies.
one tends to think passing time means everything gets perfected. Our ancestors were not more stupid than we are. Many of them just knew what they were doing. Hats off.
I loved it. Shallow seas and estuaries are filled with life and one is fortunate if they can live and play in such a paradise.
I have been sailing in this area since I was a little kid. We keep our 37ft yacht in Makkum and even recognized some of the board that came by in the video. Can't wait for the sailing season to start again

This boat is how I imagine the "Dulcibella" looks in the sailing adventure book "The Riddle of the Sands" by Erskine Childers. This book was written around 1903 and concerns 2 mates sailing in the North Sea among the sand banks talked about in this video. It is recognized as the first modern detective/adventure/espionage book. It's available on Amazon and is an excellent read.

We have a 18' trailer sailor (micro challenger) the 3', 300lbs keel can be winched into the hull and we can sail with a 9" draft
We like to beach her on an outgoing tide and let the incoming lift us. It is a racing yacht and we seem to move at a pace although my only training was at school
