It's all quite complex. ABPC was sold in 1986 to Thorn EMI who also had an interest in the TV sector. The ABC name continued in some places but Cannon also took over the cinemas later on.
Hi William. This channel is about how our Independent Television Service in the UK used to start the day in the 1960/70/80s. There were 15 regional companies at any one time. Much of the music used here is the original music and the companies usually commissioned particular composers to write for them. Hope that explains a lot. Best wishes, Nigel.
Hi Anthony. That's interesting. I'll be kind to myself and say I was using a 1964 announcement. Indeed, Scarborough started regular transmissions on 11th June 1965. Sheffield did not get their VHF relay until 1969. I wonder what they did until then?
Hi Nigel, The reason that Sheffield needed a VHF Relay was due to the Collapse of the 1265 ft Mast at Emley Moor on March 19th 1969 . The temporary 200 foot and 700 foot masts that Carried the YTV 405 line service till the Tower was completed in 1971 were not tall enough to see over the Hills to provide coverage in the area. However, Eastern districts of Sheffield were able to receive satisfactory reception of ITV from the Belmont Transmitter in Lincolnshire.
Hi. Yes, Thames was a merger of ABC and Rediffusion. ABC got 51% of the new ITV company and took their theme 'Perpetuum Mobile' to the London franchise. Best wishes, Nigel.
Nice to finally see ABC. I wonder what happened to the cinema chain after the television company did a death merger…
