The Fouga CM.170 Magister was developed to perform both basic and intermediate training activities. It is a compact, tandem seat aircraft with performance akin to larger, more powerful aircraft. Comparatively, it was a higher performance aircraft than the rival British-built BAC Jet Provost, and was considered by the Aviation magazine Flight International to be comparable to Fokker S.14 Machtrainer. It featured a distinctive butterfly tail configuration; a conventional tail was tried but found to be aerodynamically inferior at higher speeds. A keel fitted under the rear fuselage functions to reduce the negative dihedral effect of the butterfly tail during rudder applications.
The Magister was powered by a pair of Turbomeca Marbore turbojet engines, which provided 880 lb of thrust each; it was promoted as offering "twin-engine safety with single-engined flying characteristics". The two engines, which were placed close to the centre line, produced very little asymmetric thrust as a consequence; this was viewed as a valuable safety feature for a trainer aircraft. While viewed as an uncommon instance, in the event of a single-engine flameout the relighting procedure was relatively quick and easy to perform. The rate of acceleration and rate of climb were less than contemporary frontline jet fighters, such as the de Havilland Vampire and Gloster Meteor, but was in excess of many of the previous generation of piston-engined trainer aircraft. The engines shared a common fuel system, but had independent oil systems; for extended range, tip tanks were provided as standard equipment.

I lived in Salon de Provence in the 70s, home of the Patrouille de France. Almost everyday one of the 2 solos would fly full speed just a few feet above our building in the Citee de l'Air. My Dad was a mechanic on the Fouga much of his career in the Air Force. When I joined the Air Force, I was transferred to the BA745 Aulnat, home of the Ecole de Pilotes Sous-Officiers. A time where you didn't have to be an officer to be a pilot. (I wasn't a pilot). I had to wait until 1995 and transferred to the BA102 Dijon to do my first flight on a Fouga. (Dijon-Mont de Marsan-Dijon). I remember presenting a school report in 4th grade about the Fouga Magister. What kept the attention of my audition the most, was when I explained the "ejection" procedure out of this plane! Basically the pilot in the back would jump straight and hope not to hit the V-wings, when the pilot in front had to somehow manage to crawl and jump from underneath the main wing. I really can't imagine how this is possible, or if it's been done ever! :). Anyway, thanks a lot for the memories!

I'm not a pilot, but am an avid "airplane" enthusiast. Several years ago I lived near Austin TX. As a motorcyclist riding random roads in the area, I came upon a little airport, Rusty Allen (KRYW) near Lago Vista TX. I enjoyed cruising slowly by the few aircraft there and stopped to strike up conversations with aircraft owners from time to time. There was nearly always 2 or 3 Fouga Magisters there. They are surprisingly small. I imagine (as in this video) that they are quite nimble and fun to fly. Cheers!

Nice video!!!!! I live in Bakersfield and have been up there many times. At 10:47 you can see the ( what we used to call) the Johnsondale bridge. This is the upper Kern river where the Little Kern river joins the main river. You can see the old bridge (the smaller part) next to the new bridge (the larger part). I have never flown over it. If you take that road to the right just before the bridge it will take you up to Sherman pass and beyond.
