@@nkristianschmidt downwind and crosswind are terms used for alignment with a runway, they aren't any wind designations. I'm really surprised that the tower said "wind from the north" and not a specific direction, very unprofessional
@@nkristianschmidt Down wind and crosswind imply the wind direction. You typically choose the runway so you are landing against the wind (up wind) which allows landing in the shortest distance and stops you without as much braking. You fly that until you are past the end of the runway where you turn crosswind. Then when you are nearly lined up with the runway, you turn to "final" and descend to the runway.
I did a bit of gliding once, and we always took it very high on landing. I struggle to recall the height, but we would start our circuit at 1000 ft, and would usually be well over 500 ft by the time we turned onto the runway. Gliders have really good spoilers that make them drop like stones, so getting down to the runway is no problem whatsoever. The permise was that we didn't have engines, so if we were low and got stuck in sinking air, we couldn't climb out. Now I only had 20 hours, and it was a long time ago. I can only assume this pilot knows his stuff. But seeing this just irks me. I would have been a lot higher. Hell, I would have landed straight in from the 2 second mark.
This was one of the most unique glider approaches I have seen. Great scenery capture, the rain and low cloud deck, all the factors were present to give this a thumbs up.
Very nice! And the gimbal-mounted camera makes for excellent in-cockpit imaging, smoothing exterior view beautifully, while giving us some sense of the aircraft's internal view gyrations. More pilots should use this technique.
I'm used to flying small engine craft that would sink more during those pattern turns - that low base turn over the city had me 😳 mainly because I couldn't reference your location with the runway until final approach. Well done 👍🏻
It's just a different type of flight - lower approach speed and flaps = steeper rate of descent but they could also come in fast & shallow if need be - but could never compete with a glider's lift ratio. I've never flown a glider before but would love to try it out. I imagine the absence of engine noise would be nice. What exactly is the constant whirring sound, change in ascent/descent?
numbnerve I’ve only done it once, but it honestly just feels like you’re floating on the wind. It’s pretty calming once you get over the fact that you’re flying an aircraft with no engine lol. A powered plane takes you up with a line and then releases you once you’re in a good position. While they’re dragging you the ride is pretty bumpy, but immediately calms once you’re released. Once you’re up, you just glide around and enjoy the sights. The absence of noise definitely makes it a unique experience.
@@spidey19355 yeah I've watch quite a lot of TH-cam vids of glider pilots...it definitely looks awesome - I would just need to adapt to mother nature providing lift assistance instead of an engine lol

Go get a trial lesson. Lots of clubs have them these days, it's not expensive and you get to make a couple of starts, and they'll let you handle the controls a bit as well. Well worth doing, even if it's just the one time. And pretty much anyone can learn.

This is the coolest and scariest thing at the same time. I respect this so much.
TH-cam: Want to watch a lovely glider landing?
Me: Bring it on!
👌🏼🔝 landing, mate!
Very nice! And the gimbal-mounted camera makes for excellent in-cockpit imaging, smoothing exterior view beautifully, while giving us some sense of the aircraft's internal view gyrations. More pilots should use this technique.
That was pretty epic to watch, it really gives a hint as to why people fly.
I'm used to flying small engine craft that would sink more during those pattern turns - that low base turn over the city had me 😳 mainly because I couldn't reference your location with the runway until final approach. Well done 👍🏻
I dont think I would fly such a machine to he honest
@@numbnerve I think the pitch of that noise indicates the rate of ascent or descent.
Warning: Objects in recording are closer than they appear.
At that low altitude, I was concerned for his safety. Of course, he knew where that landing strip was located 😀
Great video Stefan, thanks for sharing! I’m getting my SPL at Pavullo so it was really exciting to find your video and the rest of cool & useful stuff you have in your social media! Keep the good work!👏🏾👏🏾
I can't stop myself watching this in 4K again and again.
I watch a lot of gliders on TH-cam......best landing I have ever seen

@@mr.pllesmvs1307 I know right! Lol.
How the hell can anyone not like this video??? It's awesome.
This has been my childhood dream. When I was about 5 years old, I had a dream of me flying in a single person mini-plane. When I woke up I wished I had never woken up. Hopefully one day this dream will come true.
It's good to dream and that's ok.
Yeah all you need is... 50 thousand dollars.
Go get a trial lesson. Lots of clubs have them these days, it's not expensive and you get to make a couple of starts, and they'll let you handle the controls a bit as well. Well worth doing, even if it's just the one time. And pretty much anyone can learn.
You can if you want too. It is not expensive. I have just retired as a full time professional gliding instructor (in Scotland) over 5,000 hrs and 20,000 launches. I can provide details where to start. Just believe and live the dream.
Chris
get your pilot's license then buy an aircraft or build one. A kitfox kit is around $40,000 and takes maybe a year and a half to build. And there's cheaper ones out there, or you can rent
Was für ein Anflug! Nervenkitzel vorprogrammiert 👍🙈😊
So fucking cool! An when flying watching the rain this so so peaceful
N its gliding wow
perfection. Waterdrops, green fields, steering, landing.
could watch this for hours need a longer version from the take off

It's feels like he went for morning plane walk with casual cloths
I thought he gonna land on someones roof . 😁
me too, i was like " hold on, where is the runway? dude what are you doing?"
Right in the kitchen, just in time for dinner🤪
no he has speed, he was going low for whatever reason making it look like he was really close to crashing. When in reality he has big margin for error since if he pulls he will gain alitude quickly.
@@stt.9433 He had not to much speed to go up again and keep the speed up, it's a glider, this things have not engine, they have to fly with hot air pressure winds that's the noose you can hear at the beginning its a barometer and literally say you when the plane can go up or not!
Perfect! I loved soaring! Haven't done it for a long time though.
The only word to describe that landing is "SMOOTH". Cheers from Canada.

What a good landing! And to be gliding over the city and buildings.
Holy crap, really glad this popped up on my feed. First glider video ever and it was awesome.
😢so beautiful it brings a tear from my eye!
I appreciate his confidence in bleeding off the speed for a perfect landing.
Bleeding speed with a hard bank over a town... And that final turn over warehouses to line up with the runway made my heart jump in my throat. At least the locals won't be complaining about the noise.
I would've landed in my neighbor's living room 🙄
When that glider touching the runway my heart beat so fast
Nice flying..... Really enjoyed watching....... Glider.... On my bucket list.
I havent done gliding in 20 years. I am amazed they now have glass cockpits and HOTAS.
Certainly different to the K13 (or ASK-13) glider that I learnt in!

@@unosucks7475 which game is this jesus fuck
This guy flys nicely! The glide ratio must be insane to fly like that.
I had pretty much speed, that improved his glide ratio.
The glide ratio of the LS8 with 15 m wings is about 43:1, so with 1000 m height I can glide 43 km, at least in calm air. But here I have also speed which I reduce till the landing and that extra energy also helps for the safety margin. Thank you!
@@SteFly do you have to account for human error in that as well?
@@SteFly that explains what otherwise looked quite risky to the untrained glider eye
thats very smooth landing
It looks like he is traveling at light speed. Those rain drops on the side 😂
light speed would look different
No
As a paraglider/motor pilot, I'm constantly thinking he's never gonna make it! Amazing glide ratio!
Never thought it would be so quiet inside that
@Goble gliders can be quite loud inside actually, from all the air/wind flowing all over the place
@@MrShadowmaster00 The much you can hear is the wind noise , is not annoying really more like very peaceful but if you open the window the noise become bigger!
