    Nice sightseeing tour of Pavullo city during the traffic pattern. At the last competition day of the 1st e-glide contest it was very difficult to get back home to the airfield. The finish cylinder was big enough to stay out of the rain shower and still finish the task. With a lot of patience I managed to climb with thermals above the final glide path and also used the FES to gain some more meters. Unfortunately you are not allowed to use the FES in rain and there are no outlanding fields north of Pavullo.

OK so just to set up the situation for you and what's going on today - i have been given an amazing opportunity (thanks to my sponsors OpenVario and Cloud Dancers, please check them out online links below) like I said an amazing opportunity to practice landings IN THE RAIN in this beautiful setting. Am I crazy that I think that gliders would be so much safer than any type of small plane
      Like if you really did the research on how to fly them properly I know if you do turns too tightly are probably other ways probably are other ways that it can become a very unsafe situation very quickly but as far as mechanical failure goes I feel like they would be much safer than old Cessna airplanes
      Are old small airplanes that did not make enough power because of the climate or the weather of the day and maybe that is pilot are because they didn't take off properly but still obviously you still have to get a toe up there so you're still relying on a pilot to catch you out there but I hope my line of logic is not totally unreasonable

    • @TheBranderCZ
      @TheBranderCZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@lurk7967 ~would~ they are, the main reason being their glide performance ratio, where most of these mid-high end gliders get from 1:30 to 1:60 glide ratio. (from 1km altitude I can glide 30km distance), when an engine dies in a C152 or C172, you are pretty much looking straight down or not very far ahead for a field to land on. Also as a glider pilot and GA pilot myself, I can tell you that there is nothing more soothing than a silent aircraft where the only thing you hear is wind.

    I've not long started my PPL, I love being in the air but I can imagine gliding to be something else. I hope it will help me to become a better pilot. I can't wait to experience the sensation of feeling the winds meandering beneath the wings while navigating through the air waves. I'm so impressed by how seamlessly you flew the glider over the cityscape with such an effortless accuracy that was cool, calm and collected. In fact, I was impressed so much that I watched the video a few times. Superb!

    • @tsbrownie
      @tsbrownie 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      @@nkristianschmidt Down wind and crosswind imply the wind direction. You typically choose the runway so you are landing against the wind (up wind) which allows landing in the shortest distance and stops you without as much braking. To get to the place where you are flying upwind, you enter the rectangular traffic pattern on the downwind (opposite the landing direction). You fly that until you are past the end of the runway where you turn crosswind. Then when you are nearly lined up with the runway, you turn to "final" and descend to the runway.

    I'm used to flying small engine craft that would sink more during those pattern turns - that low base turn over the city had me 😳 mainly because I couldn't reference your location with the runway until final approach. Well done 👍🏻

      It's just a different type of flight - lower approach speed and flaps = steeper rate of descent but they could also come in fast & shallow if need be - but could never compete with a glider's lift ratio. I've never flown a glider before but would love to try it out. I imagine the absence of engine noise would be nice. What exactly is the constant whirring sound, change in ascent/descent?

    • @spidey19355
      @spidey19355 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      numbnerve I’ve only done it once, but it honestly just feels like you’re floating on the wind. It’s pretty calming once you get over the fact that you’re flying an aircraft with no engine lol. A powered plane takes you up with a line and then releases you once you’re in a good position. While they’re dragging you the ride is pretty bumpy, but immediately calms once you’re released. Once you’re up, you just glide around and enjoy the sights. The absence of noise definitely makes it a unique experience.
