Nope, the odo is electronically controlled and goes forward even if you reverse the car. But they normaly need repairing after 25 - 30 years so in this nothing is working in the dash. The engine is originally equipped with a Bosch L Jetronic injection, not with a carb and also with an electronic ingnition with flywheel sensor. I think this is also gone. And the M47 Gearbox is not the strongest, maybe the reason for driving only in reverse.

940 never came with that engine setup, its been converted from injection to carburator with a earlier B230 manifold and carb, probably from volvo 240/740.

i traded in my old volvo at a dealership, had been driving like a dream for 560 000km, but i got a new car, my old was falling apart and was not safe to drive in Sweden, so the dealer sold it, most likly to africa or some other country like that :(
This is a PETROL engine! 1979 was the first year for Dieselengines in Volvo passenger cars. Engines were produced by Renault, Volkswagen, Audi. It was not until 2001 that Volvo designed and produced their own Diesel engines!
not really, those cars were designed for the snow. thats why you see those cars still alot driving around in the nothern part of Sweden. Not many modern cars can beat those rear driven cars like the 200/700/900. You never loose traction if you can handle RWD. Once used to it you dont want anything else.
