So I’m from Canada and I’m 19 years old on Jan 30. When I was a kid, a neighbour from the UK had these old Top Gear episodes on VHS. When it was time to move on, he gave them to me since he knew how much I loved cars. I was hooked on all of these episodes and would memorize all of Clarkson’s monologues. I looked up to Clarkson as a bit of a role model, and it’s the reason I know so much about cars today. I ended up writing a letter to Clarkson, Hammond and May sometime about 10 years ago just thanking them for instilling such a fiery passion for cars. However, I was only 7 or 8 at the time and was too shy to mail the letter. Good times. Hope all is well for Clarkson these days.

I had the 850 with the same engine as this. Absolute fantastic car. Still see them on the roads and some are from 94/95 era. Fun to drive. Go really well with the manual box. Downside it was FWD and would eat through tyres.
5:55 I was in a 1993 850 GLT when it was t-boned by a large truck exactly like in the video, going at least 80kph. I survived but with injuries. Without that Volvo I would have been dead. My pelvis was actually broken in 4 places and elbow too but that wasn't bad.
My parents had two 300 series, an 1983 340DL and an 1987 360GLE. I miss the 340DL. The 340 served us well for the 12 years we had it. Clarkson is a fool at times.
My family had 6 Volvo 300 series between us in the 1990's - 2 sold to us by Jason Dawe who went on to be a Top Gear presenter. All the 300 series served us very well- they were of their time and far better than many of their contempories.
Had a K reg 850 GLT. The best built car I've owned and I've had Saabs, BMWs, Mercs etc. . This one was solid, the seats and trim were superb and everything worked. I met owners with 200k on there's and everything still worked. I Bought it to replace a very rusty Ford Granada. It felt like the promised land compared to the Ford.

My daily driver is a 1993 Volvo 850 GLE. Only 208 000 km on the clock. Long gears, relatively low power, high weight. She gets regular service and check-ups. Her name is Hildi and I love her.
We had a burgundy 240 GLT with tan leather interior. Fully specced - alloy wheels, electric windows/sunroof, carpeted (!), overdrive gearbox, Blaupunkt stereo. The works! It sounded absolutely incredible, such a growling engine. But, it was a VOLVO, it looked like a Lego car, and I was about 7 years old (so had posters of Testarossas and 959s on my wall). I was so embarrassed riding around in that car, despite it being so comfortable and solid. I'd absolutely love to have it back and cruise around in it these days. Ironically it might be my favourite Volvo of all time now.
I absolutely prefer the way the 3-series drives over the way the 850 drives. The 850 is just a baby 440 (which is a perfectly okay car, but nothing special). The 34x is actually fun to drive, especially with a manual. The 740 I think is still one of the best driving cars ever made. Honestly, when Volvo went FWD, they lost me (although I did a very happy 125.000 miles in my cheap 440)
I don’t know why this video appeared on my recommended list but I’m glad it did . That scrapyard Dunn Bros I used to deliver to when I worked for C.E.F
I have driven the 850 once or twice somewhere in the mid 2000's, a car of a friend of mine, fantastic car. Reliable, 225 000 kms and running, safe, and not as bad looking as the previous ones. The first 'nice' Volvo, and later there was an estate. I thought it had come out around '90, but it was '92, apparently. I had driven the 145 ps version, it lacked a bit of power, a 170 or 200 (Pferde Stärke) version would have been better, this 2.5 turbo would have been great. Now own S60 T5.

I saw a side impact (about 30kph at actual impact) and the driver was unhurt. The car tipped in the air and back down and there were ripples down the door and sill, the side was wiggly, but not caved in. SiPs saved his arse. He shouldn't have stopped in the middle of the intersection.
My first car was a 1971 J registration Volvo 144. It had 256000 miles on it when I bought it for £100 in 1986 and I had it for a further two years before it was written off whilst parked by a drunk driver crashing into it. In two years ownership nothing went wrong with it. RIP Herman
It's funny watching him seriously review what is now a 30 years old car, when in newer top gear or grand tour episodes you see them doing a cheap car challenges with ''old cars'' basically what this is now.
My dad had a total of 7 Volvo's starting with the 122... great cars and always felt safe in them. I grew up in the back seats of these cars. Love the new ones too, not our dad's volvos anymore though 😅
I have to disagree with him on the styling. I think for being over 30 years old, it has aged really well. Clean, simple and funtional, with an air of understated quality and solidity. The exact opposite of modern cars with all their flashing LEDS, fake exhausts, scoops and vents, chock full of poinless tech that will no doubt fail very expensively. These old Volvos are legendary for the milages they can achieve when looked after. 500k is not unusual for them!
I have spent 25 years looking for that clip of the old Volvo being crushed after SOMEONE recorded over the VHS. Thankyou for posting it. Although it's not as funny to a 40 year old me as it was to a 10 year old me who has seen an awful lot of Clarkson since. I do miss the Volvo of old.

The yellow volvo at the beginning that got crushed at the beginning if you check the numberplate MJH 711X on registration check it says that it is untaxed and the tax was due 1st February 1991. It just doesn't make sense that it was crushed yet when you type the numberplate on registration check it comes up.
i own the same Volvo 850 Bj 92. with 2.5L GLT in Blue. Its got 150.000km now and i bought it nearly 10 years ago. I love this car, nearly no problems. Its drives rly good and i made a lot of good mamories with it. I even crashed into a old Benz once and i only had to buy a new hood and new headlights. The other car was totaled ... 😅 happends ig. Dang i love this block.
Maybe I'm a bit partial as a Swede. But I did not like the design of 740, 850 very much when they came out. But Now I actually do 30 years later... really weird... It seems timeless..
I would call the 850 the last of the "volvo bricks"..driven volvo cars all my life..from a 360 to a 740 then a 240 all saloons..I now have the S 40 1.6 petrol which has surprised me.....older volvo car speaks for themselves.
I couldn't find love for the 850...ive owned 2. but ive owned 4 Volvo 740's...2 NA and 2 turbos. Either way, putting the power to the rear wheels is WAY better. The 850 is more modern and styled a bit sleeker, but the 740 was more practical and even tho it had less HP it was more fun to drive! 220hp doesn't mean anything when it goes to the front and you cant steer. And don't get me started on how much easier it is to work on a RWD over a FWD! My last 740 was tweaked to 200hp @ 15psi and was a blast to drive.
So very true. I've owned 240, 940 turbo, and 850 turbo (222hp). 850 was by far the most modern and luxurious, but also much harder to work on and more problematic. When things go wrong on the 240 or 940 it was also very easy to work on and relatively cheap. On the 850, parts under the hood always hard to get to and very pricey repairs. Engine and transmission on all 3 are bulletproof though. Favorite of the bunch by far is the 940.
palebeachbum the nice thing with the 900's is they made them until 1998. last year for the 700 was 92 or 93. naturally, the younger your old car is the better it will be. As tough as the 700's are, getting a used one these days means buying a car that is at least 20 years old and has 200k-300k miles on it. But ive seen a few sub 200k 900's from time to time. One reason I loved my 700's was that they are a very cheap used RWD car. My best one was a '92 turbo red wagon with 230k...all in working order with good body and paint that I bought for $450. I drove it for 1.5 years, only put $300 into it and then sold it for $500 :)
RCPro Driver 1995 was the last year 940's were sold in the US. Now that I've owned the 2.3L 4cyl, 2.3L 4cyl turbo, and 2.4L 5cyl (all excellent motors), I'd like to try the 2.9L 6cyl. in the 960/S90. I've heard they have problems though. Probably still better than the typical engine though.
Ha haaa...been there, done that. Nice car, but if devoid of proper maintenance, it became a money pit. Almost cost me my marriage, you know how women become bitches when a man makes a mistake, especially in the car section... ;-) The power of association, I see one of these nowadays and cringe remembering those married days, lol...
palebeachbum We have a 97' s90 with about 130k (my mother's). I'm thinking about getting it from her since it drives like new. Have had fewer probs from it than my 850. Still miss my 850 though.
Very witty! Especially the local primary school design team. Can you imagine Giugario going to Volvo for a job? Looking back on the 850, I still would NOT want one. This clip is probably its best memorial. Sayonara.
I learnt to drive in a 10 year old 360 2.0gli and I cant remember it being that bad. On the contrary, it was pretty quick and the weight distribution was perfect
£22k for a family saloon 31 years ago, my 2001 B5.5 Passat estate was £12,500 out the showroom with no discounts! On the coat-tails of the excesses of the 80s but who in their right mind would buy such a leviathan for that price!
The 850 was a medium to large saloon of its day. Look how JC towers above it, and how small this vehicle is compared to the balloons called SUVs are today, with often less interior space and certainly poorer visibility anywhere but in front. Width especially 1760mm for the 850, A Nissan Juke is 50mm wider.
The 850 is a great car. I still have one, approaching 250,000 miles on the clock and still going strong.
Only just broken-in.

It just doesn't make sense that it was crushed yet when you type the numberplate on registration check it comes up.
Fun fact, that car was a press car and is still in storage today.
Volvo SIPS. Yes, my 2006 XC90 D5 diesel has it. Feels very safe.
The Allman Brothers!
Clarkson looks like he was the singer in a heavy metal band back then!
It's such a beautiful design still in 2023. Clarkson is often wrong in these older clips.
I'm late to the game, but the S80 I bought 10 years ago still looks like new and drives like the day I bought it
i own the same Volvo 850 Bj 92. with 2.5L GLT in Blue.
Nice jacket JC
Back in the day people decried that Volvos looked boring. Now people miss their olld designs.
This clip makes me realise Jeremys greatness, really funny still informational
Maybe I'm a bit partial as a Swede. But I did not like the design of 740, 850 very much when they came out. But Now I actually do 30 years later... really weird... It seems timeless..
Aw teletext! The memories
I would call the 850 the last of the "volvo bricks"..driven volvo cars all my life..from a 360 to a 740 then a 240 all saloons..I now have the S 40 1.6 petrol which has surprised me.....older volvo car speaks for themselves.
Mine has still yet to be crushed 😂
Still miss my 850 though.
still looks relevant today in 2014
Back when cars were truly great!
The 850 was such a great car
My uncle had an 850 and I loved being taken around in it.
These cars were light, yet strong. Excellent steering weight. Fantastic brakes. These drove great.
I miss the old top gear
£22k for a family saloon 31 years ago, my 2001 B5.5 Passat estate was £12,500 out the showroom with no discounts!
On the coat-tails of the excesses of the 80s but who in their right mind would buy such a leviathan for that price!
The 850 was a medium to large saloon of its day. Look how JC towers above it, and how small this vehicle is compared to the balloons called SUVs are today, with often less interior space and certainly poorer visibility anywhere but in front. Width especially 1760mm for the 850, A Nissan Juke is 50mm wider.
Oh, man, text-TV. That takes me back. :)
Almost creepy to see Clarkson just past his 32nd birthday!
