- What are the most popular United Kingdom cities for International visitors? The number of people visiting the UK cities annually far exceeds its population. However, the fact is that only a few of these cities account for a very large percentage of those visitors. The majority of them don’t receive as many visitors as do the most popular cities in the UK. Thus, we’re going to see in this video, 15 most popular UK cities for international visitors.
Take note please, that, the ranking draws a lot from the data from the Office of National Statistics which dwells on facts and figures about the happenings in the UK. We will also try to analyze the reasons behind the popularity of these 15 most popular UK cities for tourists from abroad.
15. Inverness
Inverness is an example of cities many wouldn’t expect to find on the list of most popular UK cities for international visitors. However, the city on the River Ness, not far from the head of the Moray Firth, deserves the 15th slot on this list. As the unofficial capital of the Highlands, the city isn’t just another quiet provincial city and the gateway to everything Scottish about Scotland. International tourists visit Inverness, at least, to see the Culloden battlefield which attests to great lost causes in Scottish history.
14. York
The first English city to be mentioned here is York, a small city in the north. This city has been a crucial population center for nothing less than 2,000 years. It’s this richness in historicity that finds space for it on the list of the 15 most important popular UK cities for international visitors. Tourists from foreign countries visit York to see in this Roman, Viking, and Medieval Anglo-Saxon city the relics, monuments, and architectural treasures of those eras weaving into the fabric of everyday modern life.
13. Leeds
The next one of the 15 most popular UK cities for international visitors is Leeds. This city is built on a culture of wool, textile, and clothing materials. Some of the attractions of Leeds are the international glamourous retail and fashion hubs in the UK such as some of the most splendid Victorian arcades and the famous Harvey Nichols first store outside of London. The 21st century Leeds is highly wired-up, having more than 35% of all UK Internet traffic.
12. Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Gateshead
The city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne came to the historical limelight as a major Roman fortification for the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall. That hasn’t been completely confined to the past as there is still evidence of this at the Arbeia Roman Fort & Museum. This is a reason why Newcastle-upon-Tyne is one of the most popular UK cities for international visitors. Tourists are interested in seeing among others the new museum near the ruins of Bede's Anglo-Saxon monastery which has been existing since the early Middle Ages.
11 Brighton
Brighton, a colorful seaside resort is the next among the 15 most popular UK cities for international visitors. The city, also known as London's beach, is 60 miles from the UK’s capital city. It’s a tourist destination throughout the year such that it receives nothing less than 8 million visitors annually. About 4.5 million of these people go to the city just to see Brighton Pier, the biggest attraction in the South East, to enjoy a combination of the fairground, bars, restaurants, rides, and a view of the seafront.
10. Cardiff
Welsh cities are among the most popular UK cities for international visitors. But the only one among the best 15 is the largest city and capital of Wales, Cardiff. The city is currently experiencing a rebirth which is manifested in the redevelopment of the waterfront along Cardiff Bay. Following the opening of Millennium Stadium in 1999, the playing ground of the Welsh national football team and the Welsh national rugby union team has increased the number of visitors to Cardiff by more than 50% in about a decade.
9 Cambridge
There’s much to see in Cambridge as its university always attracts a lot of things. While I didn’t tell you about Leeds being a university city, the presence of a university in Leeds just like Cambridge gives the two cities the fame they now have.

Please do edit --- Leeds Castle is not in Leeds ! Leeds Castle is in Kent, a fact that I have had to explain to disappointed foreign visitors to Leeds on more than one occasion.
You are being a bit pedantic, Leeds Castle, Kent is only 250 miles from Leeds, Yorkshire!

Why do you not include the City of Bath? It is one of the most popular UK cities for overseas visitors. Omitting Bath and showing pictures of Leeds Castle for the City of Leeds tells me that the person compiling this video knows nothing about Britain.

Back to the drawing board - The castle pictured in the section on Leeds is “Leeds Castle”. That’s in Kent - 100 miles from Leeds!

You short changed Liverpool in a very big way!! You did not mention the following it's the University, the first ever hospital of tropical mad.sin, one of the most famous set of waterfront buildings in the world, New York's central park is a copy of a Birkenhead public park, the first ever public railway that run from Liverpool to Manchester just to name a few.

Which clown put this together? After the third city I gave up. First, I saw a montage of York that didn't only fail to show the single-most biggest attraction in York; i.e. the Minster, but started off with a picture of Harrogate. Then we had several pictures of Leeds that weren't of Leeds at all but of a castle some 200 miles away in Kent. Why even do something like this if you haven't even got some basic knowledge? Embarrassing!

It all depends on the classification criteria. Manchester is only smaller because it is sub-divided and bits were shunted into other metropolitan boroughs back in 1974. Those statistics erroneously exclude places that were always previously classed as being part of Manchester itself. If we take the urban conurbation, then Manchester's population is the second largest in the country and that is a truer reflection of the magnitude of the city.
As David rightly says, it's how you measure it. The overall conurbation of Manchester includes places like Salford ( actually a city in itself ), Stockport, Oldham, Bolton and Eccles. This adds up to more than Glasgow, approaching around 2.75 million people in fact. If you only include the city of Manchester itself, the population is barely more than Bristol or Edinburgh surprisingly enough. There is no right or wrong definition, just a matter of opinion on how you think a city's population should be measured.
a lot of people confuse manchester and Greater manchester there is a big difference! manchester the city itself is not very big! even Salford is a separate city in it's own right. Bolton and Wigan are big towns in there own right but they all got lumped together under "Greater manchester" hence the confusion by having the name of the city in the county it confuses stupid people
But I heard that Leeds is bigger than Glasgow because it's population is over 700 thousand and Glasgow is less than that in population
