Living in the UK - The Pros and Cons

  • What are the pros and cons of living in the UK? There are always two sides to anything called coins. For that token, we can’t realistically expect everything about living in the UK to be cool. There must be some dark side. That’s why I want to discuss the pros and cons of living in the UK in this video. Americans or anyone moving to London will not have a hard time noticing some of these pros and cons of living in the UK compared to the US or other countries. Yes, those differences manifest themselves in way of life, driving, transportation system, security, economy, and wealth management.
    However, you don’t have to be an American before you notice these differences. Some of them are positive and remarkable while some others are not so positive. Those negative differences are enough to scare people away from the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, some expats who are more objective only see these as mere differences in cultures and locality.
    Don’t forget, though, the United Kingdom is made up of 4 big countries with remarkable differences in certain features. Therefore, living in London will be different from living in Belfast, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. Yet, these pros and cons of living in the United Kingdom are compiled broadly with common factors in all the countries making up the Kingdom. Some of them may not apply in certain areas.
    Now let’s start with the pros
    Pros of Living in the UK
    1. Free and great healthcare
    The most precious possession you could pay anything for is health. Did you know that caring for this is free in the United Kingdom? This is the first pro of living in the UK. If you want to have an idea of how great the UK healthcare service is, consider what obtains in London. It’s a token of how health is being managed in the Kingdom. The NHS is there to ensure that no one dies because of a lack of access to medical care.
    The system compulsorily takes care of your health by making it mandatory for everyone with the capacity to earn to be enrolled in the country’s health program. Therefore, whenever there’s a medical issue, there’s always something in the system to care for it. It’s an aberration for a legal resident in the UK to be denied the needed medical services. This is because healthcare is actually free.
    2. Job opportunities
    Another pro of living in the UK is the job opportunities available in the country. There's plenty of jobs in the UK, not only in London. According to recent data from the Office for National Statistics, the employment rate in the country is 75.3% with a constant decrease of 0.4% every quarter.
    The United Kingdom is not among the countries where you’ll cry about unemployment. That’s why people are moving to the UK from all parts of the world to find work. Those who are seemingly jobless in the country have issues with their employability or mental attitude. The English language is a very good reason why employment opportunities are abundant there. Another reason is that the UK is highly industrialized and this always creates the need for skilled and semi-skilled workers.
    3. Good education
    Education in the UK is enviably good because of devolution. Each of the countries has different supervisory bodies for its school systems. While the UK Government is in direct charge of education in England, the Scottish and Welsh governments are responsible for education in those schools.

    This description fits London very well. It is unfortunately very difficult for expats to settle there now with such competitive housing, high costs of living and very strict requirements just to open up a bank account! However, I have found locations further away from London, to be much better and more friendly than London. My friend from the UK once told me: "there is London, and then there is England" as they can seem very different to each other at times.

  • @SuperMissblueeyes

    Not all the people in the UK can be considered "cold". It really depends where you are. Northerners are much more friendly & much more likely to look out for their neighbours. And the further out of cities you get, the less "cold" people are. In most villages, everyone knows everyone & look out for each other.

    Healthcare is not free, workers have National Insurance deducted from their monthly gross pay every month, over and above tax also being deducted, and this deduction is generally higher than the average worker's tax deductions. So no, it's not free!

    • @samkotlin8938
      @samkotlin8938 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The only thing that is free in this world is the air. I assume that you are a tax payer, do you pay hypothecated taxes towards specific causes such as police, fire departments or the military? I think that your taxes goes in to a general fund. In the uk we have something similar which is called national insurance that mostly goes towards health and social security. In essence when you need such services it’s free at the point of use, no need to worry about calling an ambulance or seeing a doctor when you are feeling unwell. Free at the point of use. It really isn’t hard concept to understand.

    • @barefootvibes8896
      @barefootvibes8896 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When they say free, they mean free at the point of service.
      In the States we pay more to health insurance companies than we would if we had a similar system.
      To put it simply, health insurance companies are middle men that exist purely for the generation of profit for their share holders.
      I'd take the British healthcare system any day over what we have in the States.

It's much easier I suppose If somebody comes with his family here from day one, otherwise you must be OK with the fact that you are going to live alone for the rest of your life until you are going to die alone . 🙂

    The main difference is the amount British people moan about living in the UK. They seriously don't have a clue how lucky they really are in every respect that I can think of. IMO the British have the best of all worlds. All the advantages and none of the disadvantages. Even the pointless complaining about tiny matters one can get used to. I have traveled all over this planet and I would not wish to live anywhere else. All very interesting, and I always appreciate the adventure but when I arrive home at the airport it is like coming home to paradise on Earth. Even if it is cold and raining at the time, this is often better than when the sun is shining. You take a breath of that cool British air and your energy levels immediately increase. Back to relative civilization again, it is hard to beat that feeling of relief.
    Some places are more civilized than others but America seems like living in a dog-eat-dog dystopian Hollywood movie in comparison, where everyone seems to be playing a part. When you get even slightly behind the facade of all countries outside of Western Europe you find that everything is so corrupt that your head starts to spin trying to work out how an honest person even survives in these places. Honest seems synonymous with stupid or extremely poor, friendless, and stupid.

They need to build more and more railways. They need to come up to being a developed country. Just compare the UK with France or The Netherlands. The UK looks like a third world. These people should know that health care is very important yet the UK can't guarantee that they can offer any treatment on time, which means life or death.

    YOU are entitled to love diversity in a world you used to recognize as, culturally, your own, but that's your personal addiction and as for me, I enjoy others, too. That's why I go and visit the other cultures in THEIR lands. Then I come home to revel in my own. This is not bigoted, it is normal. Ducks fly with ducks. Get used to the idea and if you don't like that, why not move to where you can celebrate this other culture? If you prefer hodgepodges, then perhaps you should build a new Tower of Babel, but we know how that is going to work out. We see it now in those multi cultural societies that can't agree on where to dump the poo. No thank you. You can live in a cacophony of sound and fury, muddled and signifying nothing (except decline) but as for me, when I want to celebrate diversity I visit another culture and I prefer to do it on a plane, not next door. Hate me but I don't care. I'm right. And as to the NHS, if you like care whose quality is reminiscent of Medicaid, circa 1965, enjoy it. However, what all those who live in the UK, which I visit frequently, have imparted to me is that IF you ALSO have "private pay" insurance, you go to the head of the line in the UK but if all you have is the NHS, then you WILL wait and you MIGHT die waiting. The wonderful health care saga is BS. The prices are high, the flats are smaller than NYC, the food, (were it NOT for diversity THERE, I admit) is robustly DULL and yes, the people are standoffish and rather humorless. That might be because the nation is slowly dissolving before our eyes, and that too, is a fact, Jack. Their much vaunted transport system, like all that "great" train oriented Euro world of choo choos, runs at a major deficit. So if you want to live in a world where you can't understand or reason with your neighbor, who is unfriendly, and where you want to pay double for what you can buy here, and live in a shoe box sized hole for too much money, if you want to live like that, you go right ahead. I'll visit, then escape.
