Today on our 2013 Ford F-150 Super Crew Cab we're going to be installing the Hopkins Adapter for a 4-pole to a 7-pole as well as a 4-pole, part number 37185. Now we're here at the rear of the vehicle. Now this vehicle already has a 4-way plug on it. We've already gone ahead and tested it. We know it does work. We've also lowered the spare tire down out of the way to give our self a little more working room.
We're going to be installing this 7 and 4-way plug so that this vehicle can have a brake controller as well as a 12-volt hot lead installed at a later time. We'll be installing this bracket here that holds the 7 and 4-way plug in place as well. Now we will be removing this 4-way plug out of its existing holder. Just pull it down. Go ahead and push that up behind it.
We will need to change this bracket here a little bit and we're going to go ahead and connect it right here to this factory 4-way bracket that's already welded to the bumper. We've gone ahead and put it in a vise and straightened it out. We're going to reuse the four flat factory bracket but we're going to connect this bracket to it. But in order for our wires to clear our hitch we had to straighten it out so that it could come down low enough and get the wires around the hitch. We're going to need to drill two holes, one on each side.
So we'll be using these two holes. Go ahead and take our marker put a dot at each side. Now with our holes marked we'll go ahead and take our drill bit and we'll drill out these two locations. Weve gone ahead and touched up the paint a little bit here on our brackets since the paint was a little scratched after we bent it. Go ahead and put our 7-way plug to it.
We're going to attach it to the bracket using the supplied hardware. Just a machine screw with a locking style nut. Go ahead and put all four in. Once we have installed we can go ahead and tighten everything down. Next we'll go ahead and take the hardware that comes with the kit. We're going to then attach our bracket to the factory 4-way bracket through the holes we just drilled. Then tighten that down as well. So next we're going to need to go ahead and plug our four flat wiring off of our new 7 and 4-way plug into the factory four flat. Now in order to do that we're going to need to trim some of this extra rubber off of here for it to fit properly on this plug here. To do that we'll just use a razor knife, trim back some of the rubber here. Now you can see we trimmed back a little bit of the rubber here on our 7 and 4-way plug that way it fits into our factory four flat. Now before we push this connection together we're going to fit a little bit of dielectric grease here to help protect the connection point. This is part number 11755. It's a little dielectric grease. Go ahead and add some to our plug. Go ahead and put our plug together. Go ahead and also take a zip tie, run it through just for a little extra protection to make sure that the connection point stays nice and tight. Go ahead and trim off any excess. We're going to go ahead and cut this old connection point of this old cover off. We don't need that anymore. We're going to also go ahead and wrap this connection point up with some electrical tape, make sure that it's protected from the elements as well. Next we're going to need to attach our blue and black wire off the 7-pole to the factory wiring harness. Now we're going to need to extend the wires just a little bit. Now the wiring that we'll be using is part number 10-1-1 which is just some 10-gauge wire. It doesn't matter the color but in our case we're going to be using about a two foot piece of blue wire and two foot piece of black wire just to make things stay consistent. We're also going to be using a couple butt connectors, part number 05732-2. Now we're going to need to extend the wires just a little bit, about two feet on each wire. Go ahead and take our extra piece of wire here. We'll strip some back. We'll then be connecting it here to this blue wire. Go ahead and crimp down the butt connector. Go ahead and repeat that same process for this black wire. Go ahead and take the other end of our jumpers and go ahead and add a yellow butt connector to each. Now when you come up here underneath the vehicle this right here is where the four flat wiring comes up and there's a plug right up here. Now right here you'll notice that there's other wires for our 7-way plug already here. Thi

There are no blue or red wires in my 4 way wiring harness. Now what?

The 4 pole wiring that was on the truck in the video had a 7 pole wiring harness installed and just needed to be connected. If you just have a 4 pole harness, you will need to install the ETBC7 kit that I have linked below.

If we were to hook up the purple wire, which wire would you have to splice into on the factory harness?

at about 9 minutes and 30 seconds, you add a fuse ? and relay? to make 12volt hot? what is that for?

Would the red wire maybe further in the harness if it is not by the plug?
