      Get a good impact driver to drive down screws.

    The pancake box you are using are not fan rated and therefore not up to code. They do make fan rated pancake boxes which is what needs to be used

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are absolutely right! I didn't realize they made a similar pancake box exclusively for ceiling fans until after I made this video. The thread area has 3/8" of threads. I've seen those & will use that one next time. the ceiling fan I installed on this pancake box wasn't that heavy & no issues but I like those other pancake boxes. Good catch!

    Great video. Do remember the conductor fill limits on these types of boxes. 6.0 cubic inches for that box doesn’t even have room for 12/2 romex. I know it’s tedious but just FYI.

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm not sure about that one. You think these pancake boxes are just for 14/2 romex wire?

    No grommet? The wires can vibrate against the metal and burn your house down.

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would think the romex cabling is strong enough to withstand any minimal vibrations a house could get but your comment is well taken. Since this area above the ceiling did not have an attic I was more focused on that fact rather than your issue you brought up. Note take. I installed another pancake box after that & I inserted a plastic knock out grommet/goody that also kept pressure on the wire after pushing it into the pancake box. I will use those from now on or even a romex connector could work on the back side or inside of the box depending on what type of fixture you will be mounting to a pancake box. Thanks for your message!

    Installed with code deficiencies

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right. I wasn't too concerned at the time since there is not an attic above so no one will ever be walking around up there with a possibility of damaging the wiring. I could've driven all the way across the island to go to the hardware store again to get a romex connector to fill the hole where the wire went through the metal box. The metal pancake box also was not really designed for a ceiling fan install since the screw thread areas weren't very deep. They have a pancake box where the screw thread area is like the half inch deep so threads all the way through. But since the ceiling fan I was installing wasn't very heavy I decided against going back across the island to get a different pancake box. This pancake box was installed many years ago for a new ceiling fan at the time & to my knowledge it's still purring along. But you are correct, had I installed this work had an inspector looked at it, it would've never passed inspection. Good catch. That tells me you watched the entire video....thanks!

    • @WeMe83
      @WeMe83 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What code deficiencies? Do you have a link to the video you made to do it to code?

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WeMe83 The code deficiency would be where the romex wire comes into the metal pancake box there should be a sleeve on the metal hole knockout area so there would never be a chance of the wire to move back & forth & possibly be nicked by the metal. Very remote chance of that happening since on this particular project I did not have an attic area above the ceiling but if you were to have an attic area above then there could be a possibility of someone accidentally stepping on the romex cable & then have the cable dig into the metal pancake box around the knockout area. If there was an attic above this area then I would've installed like a romex connector on the pancake box & clamped that down on the romex cable then stapled the romex cable along the side of a ceiling rafter etc.. Unfortunately I don't have an updated video that shows all of that since I have not installed any other pancake boxes since this one as I recall. The other code issue would be where you would attach the screws to this particular metal box the thread area isn't very much but they do have other pancake boxes exclusively for when you use one to install a ceiling fan in that where the threaded area is there would be a sleeve of threads that would be like the thickness of the box which would be half an inch. That way there would be more of the thread area holding the screws that would hold the entire weight of a ceiling fan to the pancake box. See what I mean? In my case the particular ceiling fan I installed wasn't that heavy & hasn't fallen down yet! But yes I should've made the extra effort to go back to the hardware store & purchased the type of pancake box that should be used for a ceiling fan. Let me know if you have any other questions & good luck with your project!

    Lol no cable holder... Violation 😂
    But you should've put one it, they're only $1
    You don't want someone opening a whole further down and wonder what's this wire going to and they tug on it, it pulls out of the box etc...

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I guess I should've installed a cable holder on here but there was no attic above & no one is ever going to access this area unless they tear the whole ceiling down so I don't think anyone will be pulling on this wire any time soon. Thanks for your message! It tells me you watched the whole video!

      Do you have an attic above your ceiling to where you can crawl in there & install a flat 2x6 or 4x6 in between the ceiling joists so that you can then install a pancake box for the ceiling fan?

  • @fanandbe72
    @fanandbe72 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    That box isn’t made to carry a fan, wrong box! Yea

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice catch on your part! They make a pancake box where the thread area for the mounting screws has like a full half inch of threads so that is the type of pancake box you really should use for ceiling fans. The ceiling fan I installed was in a bathroom & not that big of a ceiling fan & as far as I am aware this ceiling fan is still purring like a baby but yes the pancake box I should've used would have been the other one. Thanks for taking the time to send me your message...

    I always grew up thinking ceiling fans were for people with low income since they can't afford a Central Air conditioner.

    • @videojoeshows
      @videojoeshows  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all. Everyone should have a ceiling fan since you could turn it on low or medium at night right over your bed without having to turn the AC down too low for the night. Then before it gets too hot outside you could turn the ceiling fans on medium let's say just to keep the air circulating & thereby preventing you to have to use your AC as much. Wifey likes the ceiling fan on all night as it keeps her face cool. I've got a ton more DIY videos you might be interested in. I could've installed a romex connector or plastic grommet or cable holder at the hole in the pancake box but there is no attic above this area for someone to walk on the cable. If there was an attic above this area then yes I would've installed a romex connector or cable holder etc. & things would be different as you would not want someone walking on this cable & possibly damaging the wires.
