I always liked this tiny detail about Dante: before the first Urizen fight, his hair was still as long as it typically would be in the other games and his stubble are pretty short. After his one-month coma from being defeated by Urizen, his hair actually grew a bit, so much so that it gets slightly wavy towards the ends, though this was likely a design decision to make sure Dante didn't look too different. Not only that but his stubbles are much more noticeable now.

Dante loves his friends and loves his family and it kills him to have to hurt Nero by lying to him about why he doesn't want Nero involved but he knows that it'll be worse to tell Nero the truth. It's only when Dante has no other choice that he reveals it and you can tell that Dante REALLY didn't want to. I mean, his whole motivation is that he remembers how much fighting Vergil in DMC3 and killing him in DMC1 hurt him and he knows he can't make Nero go through that. It makes it a perfect bookend when Nero calls Dante dead weight at the end. It's Nero realizing why Dante did what he did and saying "I forgive you and I'm not going to let you hurt yourself"...in the most DMC way possible.
Imagine in DMC 6 were in Kyrie and Nero had a child... Dante would be the old grand uncle whom always sits on a chair and tells a story about his prime time like how grand uncles tells their stories during their veteran war days

Yeah, it was to follow more the original personality Dante was given in DMC1, a balance of Goofy and serious, DMC4 Dante was more on the goof side due to the popularity of DMC3, but it felt somewhat inconsistent with his character, so they went with this instead, which is something I like
They've stated that they want to make the next trilogy focused on Nero, and Dante took the backseat. He's been carrying the series for too long, and needed some rest to avoid the series from being stagnant.

Not a great comparison, but to me, Dante is somewhat like Ezio and Vergil is like Altair; no matter which new character Capcom introduces in the franchise, those two will always be the most loved. Sorry Nero :(

Demon blood draws power from human blood, so apparently the more human a demon is, the more powerful. Nero is 1/4 demon(presuming his mother is human), less than Dante and Vergil, hence maybe he's stronger than Vergil by simple math, or the game thinks so anyway, he defeated him after all, qlipoth fruit and all. ps. this is just speculation of course. Maybe it's more of a narrative device, like children being better than they daddy, or something like that lol
He casted that side off because he hated it. He didn't want it. Of course he wouldn't give him anything to help him survive. It's shown in Phantom in the Visions of V or Before the Nightmare. When Phantom hated Humans and felt they were beneath him and therefore wouldn't help V so V made a contract wirh Shadow who was fading and Shadow killed Phantom. The Nightmare are nothung but Vergil's Nightmares and Nelo Angelo as well as his thoughts. Urizen was the demon half of Vergil that detested his humans half and would not help him in any way because he felt he didn't need him. And because he was falling apart as well. So the only way to save himself was to cut out the crumbling flesh and emotions that he felt held him back.
