- Looping and layering his guitar parts, Maneskin's Thomas Raggi plays an epic solo guitar instrumental piece live in concert before a sold-out crowd at The Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco, California on November 4, 2022. Raggi played this solo instrumental as the opening of Måneskin's encore set, after which his bandmates came out and joined him to play their song "The Loneliest." Måneskin is an Italian rock band consisting of Damiano David (lead vocals), Thomas Raggi (guitar), Victoria De Angelis (bass), and Ethan Torchio (drums). This was the third night of their Loud Kids Get Louder North American Tour.

I’m gonna come out and say it I have met him 4 times he is an absolute sweetheart I saw them twice on the last tour and one night he played a 12 minute solo which for todays music is completely unheard of you can say what you want about him but they have opened for Metallica and The stones they played their own show in front of a crowd of 70k plus in Rome I’m tired of the hate yea he’s not Stevie Ray Vaughan or Hendrix but the kid knows how to play guitar and he’s pretty damn good at it too
You're not the only one here being tired all of the hate. Being a 51 old it's not the first time I'm seeing the bashing form haters. Some twenty or so years ago had received a "lesson" about my admiration of Jimmy Page (?!) and his playing. Which I found profoundly silly today. The "professors' " were into Satriani and Vai so all of the rest were garbage according to them. I consider myself lucky with Page, those who listened to Clapton and Santana were almost crucified. 🤣 That said - nothing new today: knowi-all haters are still around. And they won't change. That said, I really thought I would never hear a long guitar solo played on stage these days by someone younger than 45, but as it looks like now - I will listen to one in July in Trieste. I'm beyond happy and can not wait for it.

As a guitarist I agree on the impossibility of defining this very simple solo as "epic" but at the same I think that all this blind criticism is more detrimental than helpful for contemporary music. People making silly comparisons with Page, Hendrix etc. should wake up and realise we are not living in the 70s anymore and Maneskin main purpose is not to emulate or - even worse - to replace them but rather to fill a void proposing very basic and simple rock music that could be appreciated by everyone without particular demands. The band never claimed to be the new Led Zeppelin or RHCP because this is not their nature. The same concept applies for Thomas' solo. He is not displayed in the stage as a prodigious guitar player but rather as part of this whole concept: easily transmitting emotions and creating music by keeping it simple with few pentatonic notes and basic Am chords. I am pretty sure that all these guitar experts critics looking for more sophisticated music already know names like Matteo Mancuso. His performances are also in TH-cam so I cannot understand what are they doing in this comment section

Maneskin makes simple music very well, that's their main role. Put on some rock'n'roll for people. If people want virtuosity they have plenty: Kiko Loureiro, Mateus Asato, Tim Henson and many other guitar players who also deserve love. Many of the greatest solos are just pentatonic scales "with swag". People really downplay feeling over technique now days, for stupid reasons imo.
As a guitar player I feel really good watching this. (Take it as the way you like)

God he’s good. I’ve been obsessed with this band since Eurovision but I did think when I saw their first live performances that Thomas’s ambition and obvious creativity wasn’t quite matched by technique. Seeing him grow and develop to being this incredible guitar god has been the biggest joy of watching them.

Thomas è del 2001, ha dunque 21 anni; John Terry Norum è del 1964, ovvero nel 1986, anno di uscita di The Final Countdown, TERZO album degli Europe, aveva 24 anni, e ne aveva 21 nel 1983, anno di uscita di Europe (primo album).
Facendo gli opportuni confronti dovrebbe essere agevole capire chi sia epico.

Technically not a song, but this is now my favorite "song" of all-time. This piece of art embodies everything I love about music; hauntingly beautiful melodies, hypnotic chords, and the ability to send me into outer space. This is what my soul would sound like if it was set to music. I hope Måneskin as a band dives deeper into this type of soulful rock. I'd buy an album of just him improvising stuff like this! I'd drive hours just to hear him play for an hour!

Sono qui incuriosito dopo il podcast di chitarra facile tra David e Silvestrin sulla musica in Italia. Ecco cosa fanno anni e anni di talent in TV, vi convincono che pure la merda è buona. Si può lasciare tutto il beneficio del dubbio che si vuole, ma qui mancano proprio le basi, al chitarrista. Al di là del fatto che nel 2022 si faccia ancora o no un assolo durante un concerto, il che è opinabile, lo si fa se si è tecnicamente validi, o quantomeno in maniera sufficiente, sennò fai a meno di farlo e fai più bella figura. A parte il suono che è discutibile, quando si fa un bending lo si fa per passare da una nota all'altra, non da una nota a non si sa bene cosa (cit. Yngwie) che sia questo un tono, mezzo tono o un tono e mezzo e poi di conseguenza il vibrato che si vuole per dare espressività. Senza contare che i bending col mignolo non si possono vedere (e ascoltare soprattutto) totale mancanza di rotazione del polso. Ora tutto quello che si vuole ma uno che ha studiato un minimo sa che queste sono le cose basilari se si vuole suonare un minimo decentemente. Purtroppo oggi è così basta essere "belli" e avere il look che piace ma si può anche suonare da schifo. Quindi non demoralizzate se ce l'ha fatta lui a sto punto possono farcela tutti, anche perché qui di talent mi spiace ma ne vedo proprio poco.
idem..mi ricorda quando a 14 anni con il registratore a cassette facevo i soli con la mia squier (sì, anche io avevo la Squier..), il gain a manetta con il mio Marshall Valvestate da 10w in taverna..la loop station non l'avevo e facevo sovraincisioni.. :)) . Aldilà della banalità del giro e del solo..devo dire che anche il suono mi fa rabbrividere. Pessimo. L'unica cosa positiva di tutto questo è che magari tanti decideranno di comprare uno strumento e iniziare a suonare.

Hi Takezo, not sure which version you meant. I watched the "Doom Troopin' Live" one. He's great. I'm not saying Raggi is better than Zakk Wylde, but I do want to point out that Wylde is playing there with his whole band (drums, bass, and rhythm guitar) which helps things stay on the rails in terms of tempo and melody. Raggi went out onto the stage all by himself. Yes, he made some mistakes, but for 5 minutes he kept the audience of 3,500 screaming people rapt and excited just with his guitar improvisations. And by the way, "epic" does not mean spectacular or skillful in my dictionary. It means unusually long in scope or duration. Please show me a dictionary that says otherwise.

@@TimBracken Man I appreciate you like music and Maneskin music, but a professional musician like him should be on tempo even alone and even without hearing himself, so you are not really complimenting him :) epic is nothing about duration, is a literary genre focused on honor, passions, heroes, and great quests (first examples are the poems by homer). This solo is really nice, great songs were made with two chords and penthatonic, if you liked it I suggest you Maggot Brain by Funkadelic, which I'm sure he knows well, since he playes a lot of "funkied" rock
Thomas Raggi has intermediate guitar skills, everybody with at least 5 years playing is better. Zakk wylde sorry for this
@@jhonshopper282 Its not a question of skills...Keith Richards is one of the worlds best guitarists...and he isnt Steve Vai or Tim Henson skillful...or even his contemporaries and yet...he wrote some of the most recognizable riffs and melodies on guitar. Thomas doing the same in Maneskin. The world is ruled by doers not learners. Very few can do both.

Hi Gilles, I started to record it and then everyone thrust their phones high in the air. This blocked other people, so like an arms race, those people then raised their phones even higher. So Damiano was totally blocked for me. I am about to post the song right *before* the encore though: Lividi Sui Gomiti, where they bring the fans on stage to dance and sing along.

I don't really understand why you all call this epic, great playing, etc. This is a very-very low quality music, imo :)
So I disagree on your last point, but that subjectivity is what makes music so great: one person's trash is another person's treasure. As for "epic," I wasn't going for the informal definition a lot of people apparently use (as in majestic and magnificent) but the traditional dictionary definition, namely longer than usual. With his improvisation, looping, and layering, Raggi kept the fans captivated for five minutes with just his guitar, which is an unusual and impressive feat.
I don't really understand why you don't call this epic, great playing, etc. This is a high, high, high, quality. We know who Thomas Raggi is. You should listen to others then. Bye-Bye.

Ricordo ai "vati della musica e sul come deve esser suonata" che nella storia del rock non esistono solo Toto e Steve Vai e Gilmour, ma ci sono (cito per conoscenza, non per comparazione) Hendrix, Vaughan, Page, e tutta una lunga sfilza di musicisti e chitarristi che non erano propriamente precisi, non erano puliti e neanche innovativi (in altri casi, non Hendrix e soci) ma che si lasciano ascoltare e che in modi differenti riescono ad emozionare una platea.
A prescindere da cosa si ascolti e dall'idea che ognuno di noi ha, si può dire "mi piace/non mi piace" ma MAI dare implicitamente degli ignoranti agli altri, perché l'ignoranza è ciò che crea interesse attorno alla musica che altrimenti, dopo secoli di produzione, avrebbe esaurito il suo interesse.
Insomma, vivete sereni, non rompete le pxxle e non giudicate mai gli altri, sono solo percorsi diversi dal vostro.

E nel caso specifico, questa esibizione non ha niente di epico; orecchiabile, espressiva, molto settantiana, non epica.
