    I regularly, edit music in Logic Pro, video in Final Cut, photos in Lightroom,…… I settled on the M2 Pro Mini with a bump up to 1 TB of storage just to have a little breathing room. No other upgrades. This machine has sailed through everything I’ve thrown at it so far.

Exporting in FCP one of their loaded videos I copied to be 15-mins long and exported it as a 4k Apple Devices video. I had about every app on the machine launched. That's the most I stress my current Mac. I watched the memory pressure in Activity Monitor and never saw it get out of the green zone. My workflow is really complicated since I do everything at the same time.
      Backend running with its Chrome tabs, ReactJS running with its own Chrome tabs, and frontend Metro Running with its own tabs.. Slack and all.
      And I am surprised how this is all running almost as smooth as I want it to be.
      But with this hardcore workflow, I am always scared my Mac will crash and I might lose my work.. so Thats why I thought its time to upgrade. Also I want the iPhone 14 simulator as its not compatible with my Mac's xCode.

    I wish you guys would have done a 799.00 mini with either the RAM upgrade or storage upgrade. Some of the tests are unclear if the improvement over the base model is due to the increased RAM or the increased storage (speed) such as exporting files from lightroom. Is it RAM or faster storage that makes that most difference. I woulnd up choosing storage over RAM mainly due to the price that Microcenter had on the 512GB model. If it has to use virtual memory, at least it will be faster virtual memory. I watched videos by other TH-camrs that showed 8GB didn't slow them down even with Chrom Tabs open, etc. I need storage, so I got that version plus 2TB of external SSD storage using a MacMIni hub with integrated M.2 slot.

    Thanks man, the Logic Pro test tells me what I really need to know, the sweet spot is the 16gb M2 Pro model, better by a long shot than the normal M2. I will have to save a liitle more to take that jump but I think it'll be worth it.
    I see so many 8gb/256GB M1 Minis on sale, I think too many fell for the initial M1 hype and got into an underpowered machine for content production and had to step up for a more powerful model when they realized it didn't cut it.

    I just bought the base mac mini M2, 8/256. And while I understand that it’s not the best, it should be enough for an average user. It may be outdated and not future proof, but for the price 8/256 is what the M1 entry level laptops were running. I think it’s fine for the price and what I’m expecting from it (hopefully). I’m totally fine with needing to update on a few years.

      @@AutomotiveConcepts Yeah, honestly I think you should go for it. I've had zero issues with my Mac Mini, it's running fantastic and the M2 chip is very fast. I ended up getting mine for an insanely good deal (around $430) and it does everything I need it too. Granted I don't know how SwiftUI will work on it, but the base Mac Mini with M2 is the same speed/storage as an entry level Macbook Air, so don't let others scare you away from it. Upgrade Ram if you can afford it and use external drives to save space, but you really don't need to. For the price I paid, I'll be happy if I get more than 3 years out of it, and if it ever slows down, I'll get get a new entry level machine. No need to break the bank if you already have a monitor/keyboard/mouse set up and don't need the portability of a laptop.

      I have the same question. I do know that Parallels 18 runs very well with Windows 11 on my M2 MacBook Air with 8GB and the 512GB SSD upgrade from 256GB. I keep other apps closed when running it to avoid too much swap use. I probably should of upgraded to 16GB but that started to put the price into the 14” Pro territory, so I did 512GB since I needed more storage and I didn’t want to use and external SSD with a laptop. I was thinking of getting a M2 Mini with 512GB / 16GB but wasn’t sure if the M2 Pro Mini would be a better idea for $300 more, given it adds 2 more thunderbolt ports and 2 more CPU cores and 6 more GPU cores. I’m thinking that would provide a bit of a boost over the base model. Another option is to get the M2 Mini base model and only upgrade to 16GB RAM and use external SSD storage, since this is a desktop unit. You’d still spend $200 for external storage, but you could add 2TB for the price of Apple’s 512GB upgrade. Decisions, decisions… :)

    Your video reinforces what I bought: M2 Mac Mini w/24G RAM and 512GB SSD. While watching your video, I opened Activity Monitor and noticed 17.9GB RAM being used and 0GB swap being used. With 512GB of SSD, I get the same performance that you showed, and I've never seen any swap being used. I speculate that folks who purchase the M2 Mac Mini w/8GB RAM & 256GB SSD will see even poorer performance when swapping due to lesser SSD performance. Maybe you could do a future video on performance when you experience sapping due to insufficient RAM and 256GB SSD versus 512GB SSD configurations.

      That's an interesting spec upgrade route 24GB ram wise. I wonder in some extreme memory multitasking scenarios you would use a tiny bit of swap even so. Even the Mac Pro Cheese grater with hundreds of Gb of ram used some swap. It seems the apple system nearly always uses some swap file. I went for the M2 pro Mac mini route with 16gb ram and 1TB ssd. Will let you know how it goes when I get it.

    I really wanted to see Parallels compared between the 32gb 10c and 12c. The reason is Parallels uses performance cores and the unbinned 12c has 8. Sure, the Mac Studio M1 Max has 8 performance cores and 2 efficiency cores, but also comes with a very loud blower fan. I am between 32/1tb/10c and 32/1tb/12c for Mini M2 Pro unless running Parallels for a long time triggers the Mini M2 Pro fan which brings me to the Mac Studio anyway.

    Thank for the comparison. One thing I noticed is that unlike older generation of macs, with these M series macs doubling how much you spend will get you less than double the performance, so the base model might actually have the best bang for buck ratio.

    • @jeanjasinczuk7543
      @jeanjasinczuk7543 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I do not think it is new thing: the more you spend, the more marginal is the performance gain. Even on Intel, it was very common to get 10% better performance while spending 50% more. And in a few cases, the upgrade was even be worse. The old 2018 MacBook pro Intel Core i9 on some longer workflow were slower than the core i7 due to severe thermal limitation. I would agree however that with Apple silicon, the base model these days are already quite fast, making the upgrade unnecessary for many users.

      There is a sweet spot as they say around the base M2 pro because of the extra ports and ram but the 512gb ssd I think could be faster so went for the 1Tb

    • @brightboxstudio
      @brightboxstudio ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I don’t think it’s a new thing. Even with the Intel Macs, I would buy upper midrange instead of top of the line, because the extra expense did not buy proportionally more performance, so that 5 years later buying the top model would not have made much difference in future-proofing. This got much worse with the last Intel Mac laptops because as MaxTech often showed, the theoretical additional performance would be cut back as soon as thermal throttling kicked in, so under extended load the extra money didn’t make it much faster than the next model down.

    I use MS Office, chrome, and safari and iWork suite. in this case 16GB, 512 GB model is okay for me? Also on the apple websites there are 3 models shown. First, Base model 8gb, 256gb (where one can add ram and sdd capacity), second, 8 gb, 512 gb and third is with 10 core cpu and 16 core gpu. So, my question is what is the difference between first and second model? Because, if want to upgrade to 16gb and 512gb, I have to select both the variables in first model and in second model, I only have to choose ram. so why apple has given 3 models, when 2 had been enough.

    I have to say your comparison videos was totally awesome. Unlike some others out there that do not fully cover the topic of their videos.. I decided to go with the M2 Pro 16 gig with the 512 SSD because I already have two separate one terabyte SSD external. By the way, I wanted to just put something out there for all the consumers to be aware of.. rumor has it that Apple has been using leftover inventory parts towards the new M3 units so beware of what you’re buying and do the research and ask yourself is it really worth it to spend all that money and give all that money to Apple for older inventory parts?. remember, it’s just a rumor that I read and thought that I just passed it on.
    By the way, excellent video again . Great job kudos to you.

The experience has been positive. I was very concerned about spending ..$$$...so much but I'm past Buyers Remorse and feel good about the purchase. My last Windows computer lasted 10 years and I expect the same on my M2....maybe upgrade to a M12 then. Has 500G SSDrive with External Hard drive connected 3TB, 2.88TB free performing Time Machine only. This thing really works well.........upside.....use a dongle for docking.
