      Don’t know if you’ll see this but check out CrossOver, it converts Windows instructions to MacOS (not emulation so the performance hit isn’t as large).

    I’m an architecture student second year now, I’ve been using the newest MacBook Pro with the M1 chip for the whole of the second year and I want to say it’s been rather amazing, I’ve seen everyone around me using gamer laptops for their work , while I thought I missed out on many of the programs like rendering programs and revit, I discovered that downloading the program parallels has given me access to all those programs, it’s basically running windows in the background while I work on those programs that aren’t yet available on the MacBook Pro, not to mention that I could work on my Mac for 12 hours straight with 3 rhino files open, 2 photoshop, my WhatsApp and a bunch of little things, while the windows in the background is running and I’m using revit, all of that without needing to charge my laptop once, it’s extremely quite and peaceful to work with compared to all my classmates with their fire jets next to me whenever they open google. I’m obviously not spreading hate on windows, I fully understand that Mac OS isn’t there yet, but my experience has been absolutely amazing, I went from considering of getting another laptop just for the rending programs to now using my MacBook without the need for another laptop, I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a laptop, especially especially if you have other apple products because the smoothness of the work becomes stupendous , having airdrop between the devices has saved me so much time, or even my iCloud being so seemingly connected with everything, it’s been quite pleasant, and the best thing so far, 0 absolutely 0 crashes and 0 lost work which has fucked me up so bad on the first year!💔

      @@EuphoriaDesignLab i wouldn’t say take the advice of a random stranger online, but yes if it came to me I would definitely purchase the M2 chip MacBook, there are far too many benefits with owning a MacBook specially if you’re a person who’s not much into laptops and just want work to get done, all the creative clouds programs work far better on MacBooks and generally the experience is much smoother and cleaner, parallels is an app that you would need to purchase that lets you open windows on the side of your Mac OS, so you can turn on all those programs that aren’t yet on the MacBook from a windows software, it’s a 100€ I believe but it’s worth every cent, from my experience using the MacBook makes your work much more professional looking as an architect and it’s much easier to create work that’s cleaner and smoother, and you also get all the benefits of the windows by using parelles so you won’t be missing out on any of the programs, they will all be available on MacBooks sooner or later just because of the high demand, there are also programs for rendering like corona and blender which I’ve not yet used, they work on the mac but I can’t have an opinion on them yet.
      If it came to me I would get the MacBook again , it’s so lightweight and the charger is very easy to carry, there are just so many other Benefits in my opinion.

    Hi Dami, as an architect myself, agree with you all the way. I already purchased the M1 air and still keeping my windows laptops for apps which doesn't run in macos (revit purposes). To me the M1 air is a joy at itself. It is portable and strong enough for my day to day mobile work such as designing in sketchup and acad on site (slim profile and it's battery endurance is a God send), it blazingly fast and never get any issue even if it's not running native in M1.

    I’m in hs and I am taking architecture. I am learning revit and it’s a great software but it’s only on the pc. My school helped us set up virtual PCs and it’s the first time I used windows again after so many years with my MacBook. Honestly I thought I was biased before but now I’m sure that I’m not much of a pc fan. It’s so nice to know that they might make a Mac compatible software, hopefully it comes out before college so I don’t hv to get another computer just for revit because no way I’m giving up my MacBook.

    • @DamiLeeArch
      @DamiLeeArch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      hahah maybe we should go on a Revit strike? The thing is, once you start working and you're not on the student license anymore, it's very expensive to get a professional Revit license for yourself, so you will most likely be virtual logging into your office computer. Also, I'm sure (and hope) by the time you're in uni / working, they'll have a Mac compatible version for Revit ^^

      Autodesk is not going to spend money making Revit for Mac. I use AutoCAD on my MacBook Pro and even though it runs reasonably well, it is missing all of the plug ins from the Autodesk store. (The same is true of a lot of architecture software that runs on Mac: you have the software but almost no third party plug ins). People have been asking Autodesk for a Mac version for many many years. Just get a pc with a graphics card with at least 6 GB of vram and a cheap digitizer tablet for photoshop.

    • @andre47337

      Honestly? Archicad is the answer, so much better( user friendly, revit compatible, and runs way better especially on MacOS). All other important software is compatible: Photoshop, Illustrator, SketchUp, VRay and Autocad. AutoCad runs surprisingly smooth on the new M1 MacBook Air. Some plug ins might not be compatible but honestly( excluding SketchUp, plug inns are a must! Luckily most are compatible) all you''ll ever need is a good template to make your life easier.

    I have to load up large revit 3D models
    And also use plugins such as CAD MEp for AutoCAD , I guess you can use small programs for Mac to work on little residential projects

When students ask me for laptop suggestions, I always recommend a PC and hold off on the m1 until new softwares are released. I'm in the same boat, I also use my m1 mostly for non-architectural tasks like video / photo editing but once the software updates are out, the i believe the m1 should be able to handle complex arch programs w/o problem 😊

    Wow, welcome to the Mac world! I've ben using Macs for about 20 years now, and just bought a PC of my own for the first last year - Windows is still rough compared to macOS but it's caught up a lot in the last couple of decades. The Mac is definitely a lot more elegant as a machine and I still feel the OS is superior, but more and more they are sacrificing performance for aesthetics in their hardware and it makes it harder and harder for me to justify upgrading. There is an argument they always have been about form over function, especially at their price point, but their race to make laptops thinner and thinner, and basically abandoning pro users has left me sour on them.
    With the move to ARM they have left a lot of people needing to use Windows in limbo. I guess the ARM version of Windows (used on their Surface machines) works but idk now much extra effort there is to get it running well, like having compatibility for the drivers and so on. Not to mention the lots of Windows x86 or x64 software which doesn't run on Windows for ARM :\
    Apple has moved to new processors a couple times in the past - from the 68k series to PowerPC in the 90s, then PowerPC to Intel in the mid 2000s. For the PowerPC to Intel move they used a product called Rosetta back then too, with varied success (it was really only good for day to day software like MS Office, programs that needed more tended to be pretty slow).
    Anyway, I hope it works out well for you! It might be at least a while before the developers of all your apps catch up though!

    • @DamiLeeArch
      @DamiLeeArch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ahhh maybe I'm too optimistic but I think lots of the apps will catch up in the next few months! In the meanwhile, I'm definitely holding onto my PC.. I'm not relying on my mac to do EVERYTHING for me, I know I will have to pull out my clunky PC from time to time. Hopefully over time, I will have to do that less because the experience is night and day, especially for a non-techy person like me. (I finally get what all the hype was about, and I don't think I could go back.. ^^)
      It does take away so much of the stress from editing large videos for me because this machine does it sooo effortlessly... I am so amazed that they are able to achieve this with such a slim, light machine. I totally get the gripe about sacrificing the function over form, like c'mon.. only TWO usb C ports?! but hey, they can afford to do that.. Most people are simple (myself included) and are willing to sacrifice function just for comfort and a nice, intuitive, smooth, clean experience hahah

      @@DamiLeeArch ya Apple and the industry has matured a lot since the Rosetta 1 days and it seems like developers have their collective acts together a lot more this time.
      Apple has been about “it just works” and “computers for the rest of us” (ie non techies) since its early Macintosh days. Maybe that didn’t always work out as planned but they tried and tended to do a lot better than Microsoft Windows in those regards 😄 Probably Apple’s worst facets back in the 80s and seemingly more so in the 90s was that if a program crashed it could bring the whole system down, requiring a reboot, losing work and creating a lot of frustration. They didn’t really get on the right track until OS X in 2001 😓

Unfortunately the AutoCAD for MAC is an inferior product ( Like try explode Text and vectorize it , last I tried on version 2020 and it will not work), just little thing that will not work on MAC version. Now realistically running Revit on a laptop is ok if you are just designing, but a full project on a laptop .... Windows or Mac could be a problem, like rendering at best quality, realistically you can do it, but it will warm up the laptop. Will AutoDesk try to set up an engineering team to convert it to a new instruction set? Is there enough market for them to make the change... and last will the product remain the same?

    Congratulations on your new Mac purchase! I also just purchased an M1 Mac and it is definitely an amazing piece of hardware! I work at an architecture firm and use Revit daily so I hope Autodesk announces an M1 optimized version soon, but I’m not holding my breath. It sounds like a handful of people are having some luck with the newest Parallels download for M1, while others still say that there are a few lingering bugs. The main reason I purchased an M1 Mac is for iOS Development and it clearly handles that perfectly. This may be my favorite Mac purchase to date!

      @DamiLeeArch  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sure other softwares will be compatible in no time and we'll all be singing praise about the M1.. I've been pleasantly surprised that some minor apps already have the M1 version, like Notion. (although revit will probably be the big elephant in the room for a while) Mostly I'm SO impressed at how fast video editing and rendering is on this thing!!! For me, that alone is worth the extra $$ and justifies the inconvenience w/ the other programs.

    Simple answer is NO for Architects. I can share my experience from previous gen intel MacBook pro. Mac devices are really great for other productive stuffs like photo/video editing but they are still not compatible with present day industry standard softwares like Revit etc. Also to add the fact a good custom built tower PC can handle intense loads of render works much better than the mac devices. Finally for the value for money it's much economical to upgrade and use a custom built PC dhan Mac devices.
    Despite all it's shortcomings I would still like to own and use a M1 MacBook Pro as my go to travel device since I am more into photo editing and mild video editing works.
