C-3PO received a new red arm in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, but the audience was given no explanation behind it. How did C-3PO get his red arm?! How did he lose his original left arm? Thankfully, a new Star Wars comic came out about Threepio's adventures prior to the newest Star Wars film which revealed the tragic backstory behind how his red limb. That really isn't C-3PO at the Resistance Base with General Leia as we saw in the move. It was actually a body double of C-3PO called "V-3PO." The real 3PO is actually away building up his outer heaven of Jedi as commanded by Luke Skywalker from his island. While the real 3PO builds up this army, the body double can continue the real one's work with the Resistance. They are each one and the same. A legend. Proof that any protocol droid can be like the "legendary" C-3PO. From now on. this double with the red arm... He is C-3PO, human-cyborg relations...

Did you ever hear the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise? It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create...life. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, he could even keep the ones he cared about...from dying. He became so powerful, the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power...which, eventually of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew. Then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death...but not himself.

I feel like he is the same character, mainly because his personality never seems to change from Episode I up to Episode VII. It's entirely possible that they only deleted his memories from his hard drive and not any other files as that could mess up C-3PO's overall functionality. It would be more like deleting the search history of your browser; yes all the history of what you visited is gone, but the browser itself remains unchanged
It's also probably like repressed memories or selective amnesia. If C-3P0 were a human, they like operated on his brain and removed part of it that remembers the events of the Prequel Trilogy. When he wakes up, he's the same as he always was but just doesn't remember the Prequels' events.

Scott did you know that the real life reason for the red arm was that Anthony Daniels had put a bit of weight on by force awakens so they didn't want you to focus on so they created the red arm so you would focus on that
+NerdSync WATCH YU YU HAKUSHO!! It's an amazing anime from the 90s. I grew up with it, I'm REwatching the whole thing, the action is amazing, the storytelling is satisfying and very 90s and it WILL sucker-kidney-punch you right in the feels. Repeatedly, and without mercy.

Speaking of C3-PO, there is a little fun fact about his name in the French version. His name somehow changed in the French dub of the original trilogy to Z-6PO, but still is C-3PO in the prelogy. For some time it was made official that, in the French version of Star Wars that his name changed when he was reprogramed. Then the dub was redonne without corecting the other problems of the dub, (especialy in Episode 4) or the fact now we get inconsistencies in the characters' voices of said original trilogy.

When his memory was wiped, he was killed. He became a completely different droid. I was very heart broken by this, I couldn't believe they killed the original but he was created by a dark Lord of the Sith, so....

He still does remember things from the prequels though, there's kind of a real world precedence for that. ECT, Electoconvulsive Therapy, otherwise known as electroshock therapy, is a procedure used for severe depression and other neurological diseases. One of the side effects of it is retrograde amnesia, I underwent ECT a while ago, and I've forgotten at least the year I had before the treatment, a few week after, and several parts years back in gaps. It was a strange experience, I felt like I was me, and yet not me, but everyone else who knew me insisted that I didn't change. Some part of me never agreed with that, and I'm not exactly why, it's kind of like a creepy itch or a sudden pulse that gives me a slight push out of my own body. I suppose I do still exist, but I think more as the me that everyone else has made of me. Coincidentally, Carrie Fisher also underwent regular ECT sessions for her own ailments, to her, she has said it's kinda like her head was the Hoover Dam, and ECT blasted it down. Finding what she forgot highlights the difficulty in trying to remember what you don't remember, it may be that months and such have been lost, but in those gaps, there's an uncanny feeling about how large those gaps are. It feels like you lost near to an entire lifetime in, say, a week of memories that you lost to the shock. Though, really, is it all that different for everyone else? People who didn't get ECT do forget things in their lives, I think the patients of such a treatment gain a new perspective to realize the things that probably were there to begin with, and that having the amnesia that comes with it just shows to what it feels like so you can recognize the gaps in your life. Then the question is, were those gaps the result of ECT or did you forget them long before then?

C-3PO's mind was not wiped,but his short term memory/data was erased...his personality was intact and his mannerisms. why was his data erased? Because Vader created him and it would be dangerous for threepio to know this due to he witnessed everything and Vader would want that info.
His silver shin is from TESB when Chewie could not find all of his pieces when the Ughnaughts were going to melt his parts down at cloud city.

Never thought I’d get such a thought provoking story about C-3PO in a marvel book in 2016 yet here we are
I remember flipping through channels once a year or 2 ago, and landing on Disney XD. There was a LEGO Star Wars short playing. It started worth Threepio stranded on a planet (where it was raining acid rain. Threepio had the red arm. Right after that, Poe lands to rescue Threepio, and then they rescue Ackbar. So there is a LEGO Star Wars short based on this.

I had major brain surgery. my memory is like a photo album and I cant remember yesterday. my family has said that my personality became way less sarcastic and I became much nicer guy to people. I think its because of what I've ben through and how nice everyone was to me in rehab and how understanding everyone was. that helped form the new me cause now I understand that people all unique.

J Drummondo probably just a mistake. That scene may have been filmed before they decided to give him a red arm and they just forgot to change it. That's the only explanation I can think of

I'm not sure if anyone else has thought of this, but typically when you delete something from your hard drive it isn't really deleted. It's marked as writeable; so that if it needs to, the computer can write over that data. Only once it is written over is it truly deleted in a "reformat" "delete" etc. method. So as long as C-3P0's "deleted" data wasn't overwritten, I'd imagine he's still there and maybe in some cases has accidentally accessed it.
I was just expecting na explanation about the origins of 3P0's red arm and instead I've got a vídeo taling about something that is far more deeper than that .This makes this vídeo fantastic!!

I can imagine that droid shuffling through acid rain as intense music plays.
No one points out that R2D2 has a lot of the same experiences as C3PO. So if he wants to know about all the stuff that happened in ep1 to 3 he could just ask him. His memories are all intact. Also I would like to think that all of C3PO's memories are not really totally erased. They are in his droid subconscious or backup systems if u will and could be , with some work, retrieved again.

I always thought (or... since I saw VII) that since C-3P0 was (probably) an outdated droid, and they were just using that arm as a temporary one until the other one got back from the workshop or something.

This reminds me of one of the lesser known Oz books where we learn where the tin woodsman came from and at one point he has a conversation with his own severed head who refuses to think of the tin woodsman as himself.
The 'Ship of Theseus' comparison means even more after the events of Solo and the merging of L3.
Love the video. The original Threepio lives as long as he has R2D2. R2 is the link to everything and he surely helped newly wiped Threepio find the right path.

7:02 I think the identity of C-3PO switched to Droid 2, as the memory banks, voice, and personality are most likely stored in the head, where all the electronic signals are sent from.
Such a touching story........ I shed a tear
I found out about this story through the recent LEGO Star Wars game. I really loved it and that ending made me tear up, and it was only a LEGO-fied version of the comic.
This will go down to me, as up there with some of the best "expanded" new canon universe stories. Would love to see them translate this story into a short film for release on Episode 8 or 9, or even an animated one-off.
Oh I remember this in LEGO STAR WARS level at the end there were rebels cleaning the droids.
Holy shit, I just realized the events that happen after the comic is put into one of those Lego animations. Even in the animation C-3P0 says that what he has been through could fill a book. And so it did
