  • BUNO 155493 started its service as a Black Pony with VAL-4 at NAS North Island on January 27, 1969. It saw action in Vietnam supporting the SEALs. A pilot was even wounded but managed to save his life and the aircraft. She then found her home in the Marine Corps while making the rounds through VMO-1, VMO-4, and VMO-6. Now her true calling has been realized as she provides the best quality CAS (close air support training) available. It’s no surprise with a history and lineage like hers!
    --------------------------------
Providing the highest quality Close Air Support (CAS) training to our nation’s Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTAC) available!
    ----------------------------
TRAINING GROUND TEAMS AT THE TIP OF THE SPEAR
Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (#JTAC) are specially qualified service members who direct combat aircraft from a forward position while engaged in close air support, and offensive air support operations. JTACs embed with units on the frontline and have the incredible responsibility of calling in an air strike on target, on time.
These highly trained warfighters go through intense physical, mental and technical training in order to withstand the demanding conditions of battle and provide their team with the firepower needed for continued success on the battlefield. Blue Air Training brings unprecedented Close Air Support training to these Special Warfare Operators to prepare them for battle. There are few things that can change the course of battle like a properly executed air strike.

How big are the TurboProp engines on your OV-10s?
My dad worked for Allied Signal/Garrette Turbine Engine Company, in Phoenix , AZ for 33 years. He retired in 1987. Previously, he had been a "snipe", serving in the US Navy during WWII, in the engine room of an LST. His ship was under the command of General MacArthur, as he made his famous return to the Philippines. Before my dad's retirement from Allied Signal in the 80's, he was the lead, developmental mechanic on the 1,000 HP OV-10 engine they had sold to the Marines.
Papa told me that this plane was originally designed to fly reconnaissance missions. (My ex husband had been a Recon Marine who jumped out of these planes regularly. He said that the back of that plane would barely hold 4 combat jumpers, crammed in there, a$$hole to belly button. The guy designated to jump first flew with his legs dangling out the back of the aircraft, the space was so tight!) In Vietnam, however, the Marines decided that they also wanted to carry bombs on their missions...just in case. The pilots wanted stronger engines on their Broncos to fulfill the requirements of this "beefed up" mission. That's why they later put in the order for this updated, stronger engine.
My dad was tasked with the job of getting that engine from the blueprint stage to a real, live, gutsy combat engine. He loved doing the job, but he later griped to me (a Marine) about having to teach a dozen "GD Jarheads" how to fix "his" engine!
I was so glad that I was able to take him aboard MCAS New River in 1987, to go talk to the young Marines who were in charge of performing maintenance on their OV-10's at the time. I was so proud of him! He actually beamed when he was talking to the Marines there. It was great! He was so proud of that engine! Not too bad for a guy who dropped out of school at age 16 so he could join the Navy and fight in WWII.

My dad flew these for a time, and one story that sticks out was about when he had a sudden and complete engine failure on one engine at full power. The resulting torque differential flipped the plane over on its back before he could react! Those engines are beasts. Glad that didn't happen on climbout!

Yeah we used to call those Engines mini C-130 engines. Baby Turbo Props. Your dad is lucky he survived that. He must be one heck of a pilot.

Had 18 of these in my AMU In Korea 1982. Great aircraft .. rugged, reliable (except for gearbox over torque caused by pilot and big changes in weather) and a great workhorse. Hang a 230 gal centerline on it and stay on station for 6 hours. Great visibility and maneuverability. Actually got to fly one while I was in command. Loved it.

Haha, I had the opportunity to jump (fall) from one of these in 1992. The aircraft was crewed by a USMC LtCol (Vietnam Vet) and Major. The LtCol told us during the safety brief "If you smell smoke in the air, it's from my pipe. I'm not supposed to smoke in the aircraft anymore, but nobody is going to stop me." Good times!🤩

Yeah, we used them in Vietnam, mostly for dropping Special forces in. Occasionally, we'd pick up some flack from farmers because we'd spook a cow. Excellent loitering for reconnaissance, also there's a hollow cone behind the pilot for parachuting munitions or an extraction from a Jolly T.

*****this is a GREAT COIN aircraft, great handling, great weapons payload, twin-engined, good visibility for reconnaissance, etc, etc……much, much better than the T-6 Taxan 2, for COIN missions. If the Americans would just put a .50 gatling gun underneath, put abit more ECM pods, datalink…..it’s a great, great, very economical aircraft to operate for COIN/special ops role!!!
    Bring it back!!!

Had the fun of watching the Bronco in the FAC role doing target marking and calling in live fire F-16 strafing runs at Avon Park once upon a time. Real ordnance and live ammo. The Bronco would orbit and 16's would come screaming in over the trees, pop up, roll, fire, and exit at low altitude. Awesome experience.

there is or was a light attck craft competition and an ungraded version of the OV-10 was submitted by i think in the end the airforce just wanted more xwings and tie-fighters as usual. and scrapped it..
