For those wanting to use the optical out device instead of Bluetooth go to All Settings > General > Devices > External Devices > Universal Control Settings. Select Optical (you should have your sound bar connected to the optical out port) and follow setup of your sound bar. Now the sound bar volume should work with your LG remote.

Or you can use "Universal Control Settings" and keep using optical... A couple ways to get there On Remote press "Sources" button, then "Universal Control Settings". Or press "Home Dashboard" and find it in the "..." menu in upper right. Or press "Home" button and find "Home Dashboard" there. After you get to "Universal Control Settings" select optical, then select brand and go thru the steps. You should be able to control sound bar with remote AND have it still be optical.
Posting this because Google recommended this video to me. Bluetooth < Optical.

I don't know how did I came across your comment, but it's definitely entitled for the Nobel Prize!
Dude, you just saved humanity... I have a LG TV with (Bluetooth) Magic Remote and a 42" 5.1 Vizio sound bar with infrared remote and didn't want to give up on the optical connection over the convenience of having only 1 remote...
I've even though about buying a new 5.1 sound bar, just because my extremely good, but a little older soundboard doesn't support HDMI eARC...
I don't know how I did it, but according to your comment my LG tv and Older Visio sound bar are working together with the LG Magic Remote only!!!

The correct way to control an LG soundbar from the GX TV by just using the TV's remote, is to set up the soundbar as a remote controlled device (connected by eARC on HDMI socket 2), and enabling the CEC / simplink option under the connection menu > device connection settings. That way you will guarantee the best possible audio quality (including Dolby Atmos and DTX, if your sound bar supports it) rather than a very limited Bluetooth connection!

I recently got an LG CX 55, and an LG SL4Y soundbar/subwoofer, and I discovered the same thing too. Only way to use a single remote (the smart remote) is to select the Bluetooth connection to the soundbar. I immediately noticed how poor the sound quality is when the soundbar is set to this 'bluetooth' audio selection. When the tv is set to 'optical' or 'optical +internal tv speaker', the sound quality is vastly better. The convenience of having only one remote is not worth the trade-off in sound quality. I expected my LG tv to get along with my LG soundbar better, but alas, there are some disappointing compromises. Try both setups out, and you'll hear very quickly that there's a huge difference between optical and bluetooth sound quality. I'll be sticking to using both remotes!

I tried connect eAch HDMI from tv to sound bar, the power button works during setup on screen, but once saved the magic tv remote won’t turn on/off sound bar, nor mute nor control volume. Any suggestion? Thanks!

I got my LG C2 Magic Remote to finally work properly (volume shows as changing +/- or mute, but doesn't actually perform the action). I had the HDMI e/arc cable in HDMI 2, PS5 in HDMI 1, Xbox Series X in HDMI 3 and a switch in HDMI 4. From forum posts, I heard the term "CEC Storm" possibly interfering from other HDMI devices, so I started to remove HDMI cables beginning with HDMI 4, the switch. That was it, the switch was causing the problem. Works fine now. No bluetooth/tv, no optical, just pure HDMI and the magic remote controls the volume now just fine. Now I need to find a switch that works properly. Didn't have this problem with my Samsung 4k TV, same switch.

I just finished coming to the same conclusion. The TV sound and Bluetooth has a very cool setup and seemed like the best option but the delay couldn’t match correctly. If you really want to know......Do it from General/Universal Device on an LG Tv or projector after 2018 or before 2018, or so, you have to almost trick it on a prior to 2018 model. Go to input selection/All all inputs and Edit Universal Control, then select Optical Input and not HDMI, then go to Other-Sounbar and select your brand and usually it will be a remote that isn't the #1 remote. My Bose was #4. Point the remote at the soundbar to make sure it is reviewing an IR signal when the light blinks. You can't test volume +, when there is no sound. It works very well now. Channel works with HDMI 1 and Volume on the Soundbar. Same with other inputs. Once it's in Optical, it's in for all.
This video did nothing. Bluetooth sound is way worse than optical or HDMI ARC physical connection. Anyone can connect to Bluetooth. This videos torrent shouod be, "Magic remote or other, won't work with soundbar." And have no video.

It actually works via optical connection and only with the TV remote.
I'm using a LG TV and Vizio 5.1 soundbar, for a whole year I've been struggling with two remotes around, I was even considering buying a newer soundbar just for the convenience. Somehow, I came across this video and you don't actually have to connect it via Bluetooth, it working fine via optical connection, then go to "Home Dashboard > menu in upper right > Universal Control Settings, select "Optical" then select the brand of your soundbar, follow the steps and enjoy your soundbar with the TV's remote for volume...
Trust me, I've wasted tine and I even used the Bluetooth connection for a while just to have the convenience of only 1 remote, but couldn't stand the sound quality.
I also used the 3.5 mm jack, but you loosing sound there as well... I'm being blown away for not knowing from before that most of the smart TVs can control the volume on soundbars via optical connection. Try it. Should work with other TVs as well, haven't tried, but with LG TV and my Vizio sound bar I can control the volume of the sound bar with the TV'S remote.
      P. S. On older TV's you can also program the TV s remote to operate the soundbar, in my instance, I'm using LG TV with magic remote which is Bluetooth and the Vizio sound bar is an old one and it's remote is with infrared so they are not compatible, but do it as I mentioned above and it should work!
