      Everything was reasonable... except the ballpoint pen. Even the good ballpoints, like the jetstream, often skip when they're writing, like the examples in this video, leaving small trails of unfilled-in lines. It drives me nuts. And they feel unwieldy to boot. Ink is the only way to go!

    • @paulherman5822

      I do have to disagree with ballpoint being the best all around pen. When they cause pain to use, for me...
      The right fountain pen and ink for most uses, and as I seldom have a need for writing on plastics... Though I find the Sanford markers tackle that for me. 😁

    My unpopular opinion: If you want to get into washi tape, don't buy tons of colours and designs or you'll be overwhelmed. Instead, select just a few that are colour-co-ordinated with your journal cover, favourite highlighters, favourite colour pens, layout designs, etc.

      I think through and bought those that are easiest to match with different themes / color palettes and can be used in as many occasions as possible. I found that those are usually in muted, neutral and vintage colors (like shades of brown and blue) in simple and common pattern/ plain (dots, plaid, checker board).
      Those may not be everyone's favorite, but less "offensive" than bright pink or yellow.
      On a wedding envelope and gift boxes for adults and the elderly, those colors & patterns are pretty appropriate.
      If I want more colors, I use color pencils.

    About the fountain pens, I think they DO improve your handwriting...but it’s because the make you WANT to improve your handwriting.

    • @STScott-qo4pw
      @STScott-qo4pw 3 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      ahhh, yes-s-s... The fountain pen is a devilishly seductive little thing in a person's hand - you don't notice it till you lift your hand from the page and just want to do better. It's no coincidence that many fountain pen owners also have Cats... 😼

    • @kotorishao4301
      @kotorishao4301 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I do agree, they force a certain grip, a certain angle to write perfectly. Which reduces writing speed, and makes it more legible. Tho if I go back to any ball/gel pens my writing will probably look like shit again 😂

    • @kotorishao4301
      @kotorishao4301 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Cortesevasive Wait... what are you saying? I’m agreeing with the comment. By placing certain limitations on writing (angle, grip) for nibs to write perfectly. It slows down writing speed, and improves not only writing experience but legibility of the writing.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's not just because they make you want to improve your handwriting. That's pretty silly. They improve your handwriting because that's what the better ones are designed to do from weight, to balance, to nib, and to flow.

    I just really love Gelly Roll pens, man. They're beautiful to write with and look at. Unpopular Opinion: You only need pens. No markers, no highlighters, not even mechanical pencils technically. You can get pens will all kinds of wild colors, opacities, and even really good erasable inks. I made an entire DnD battle map with nothing but gel pens and erasable pens; technically some paint markers were involved, but they were just some black ones I used because I had to color 90% of a white sheet of paper black and then draw on top of that.

    My somewhat unpopular opinion is that fountain pens aren't for everyone. As much as I love them, it's unrealistic that every single person on Earth is going to love them too. Some people get turned off by having to refill them from bottles or cartridges, or having to clean them regularly. Or, you've got the people who have a hard time keeping a hold of pens, so I imagine the thought of replacing even a $5 Preppy multiple times makes them wary of even trying it when Bic ballpoint pens are a few dollars for a 10 pack. Let alone a $10, $20, $30 and beyond pen. Having to troubleshoot a pen when it isn't writing is another thing I hear about when people are thinking about diving into fountain pens but aren't sure as well.

    The one that always gets me is someone will find a pen type they prefer and suddenly start thinking it’s the best thing ever and everything else is trash. Start using good gel pens? Ballpoints and pencils suck. Start using fountain pens? Now I’m too good for traditional pens. No! You can always use a ballpoint for signing receipts or tape or something! You can beat around a gel pen more than a fountain pen too! Or write on some papers with your colorful gel pens that fountain pens couldn’t. All pens are good! Use the right tool for the job

    Too many pens is a thing. When I first started getting fountain pens, I always inked up the new one. I ended up with about 20 inked at one time. I’d only use maybe 2-3 in a day, so many of them dried out before I got around to them. Still working them down to a more usable number. I think 5-6 will work ok for me. I also started a big ink habit. I have around 40 bottles now. Probably enough ink to last for many years, but inks are the more affordable habit. If your grail pen is $500+, for the same money you can get 20-40 bottles of ink. Fountain pens alone won’t improve your writing, but they can make you more conscious of the writing experience. I have horrible penmanship, but sometimes when I am writing with a fountain pen, I slow down and pay a bit more attention and it looks nicer. Still, I can scrawl quickly just as messy as I always do, plus the greater risk of smearing. Tomoe River paper is amazing for fountain pens, but be warned, the drying time for most inks is double to triple other good papers. Still, you will get pretty much the full potential for shade, sheen, and shimmer an ink has.

    theres So Much personality in this vid i LOOve it!
    ive always been a minimal bujoer and stationery nerd but not in the aestetic way, just fewer better things! rn my bujo is only one page monthly memories, a master tasklist and a weekly header with the days rolling under it.
    the only decorating i really do is to pic three fineliners that make a nice colorpallet and write the days w them, in a nice easy font i change monthly

    👍👍Thank you for clarifying some facts regarding pen choices. I am a newcomer on the scene in the midst of the endless number of pens being manufactured these days. It has been confusing, & not a little frustrating, trying to figure out what I need & want. I really enjoy Jetpen's straightforward, & often humourous, presentations. Please keep us educated!

    Loved this video, I pretty much agree with voiceover girl throughout (although I still like to use my mildliners in pastel blue and green on top of gel pen ink to avoid the harshness of using traditional bright neon yellow since like... that's an option these days! And it's ok, I don't get smudges cause I don't highlight immediately, I do it later after the ink is dry.) Very cute, thoughtfully worded and constructed, to the point, overall very appreciated video. Hope you keep these coming! ~

    I've found writing with a stub nib fountain pen, such as the Pilot Metropolitan or a Twsbi improves my handwriting. I can't quite put a finger in why, but I definitely notice a difference. Love the videos, keep them coming!

      For me, writing with a stub nib fountain pen forces me to slow down my writing and think about what I'm doing, rather than scribbling down my notes as fast as I possibly can. Writing with a beautiful pen or ink is also an enjoyable experience and can help motivate people to practice more =)

    I always keep a Fischer Space Pen (Bullet pen, model 400) in my pocket. It is the perfect "back up" pen. If another pen is having trouble writing, just take it out and use it. Because it is so small, you forget you have it. (They also have a tendency to fall out of your pocket.) Keep cheap ballpoint pens around for give way pens too. 😈

  • @zenmom42
    @zenmom42 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh, I totally agree with you on Mildliners! I bought a handful, and tried to use them for highlighting (I highlight a lot when I'm studying). In my case, the problem wasn't that they smeared gel ink, it was that they were too... mild. The highlighting just wasn't strong enough to be useful in the context of what I needed. I think they'd be better used as art pens, not advertised as highlighters.
