That’s interesting, I heard a while back that he did indeed use a Vibroverb on Texas Flood as well, but Google says otherwise like you say! Totally true about the other amps throughout his career 🤠🎸
He ran more than one amp at a time live with 2 tube screamers daisy chained in front just on the edge of break up. Sometimes he tapped one or both of the screamers off when he went into his quiet totally clean phrasings, the way he alternates back and forth in the Texas Flood Live at the El Macombo performance. With the screamers on, it accounts for his simultaneous clean/dirty tone. The screamers were set just on the edge of break up as I understand his set up.
I've watched videos of him playing onstage with two Twin reverbs, one on either side of the stage, mic'ed through the PA. I always assumed that this was how the "stereo- like" sound of the leads was created.
Sounds amazing! Those THD Hot Plates are life savers. Got my first one 20+ years ago and they have stopped me blowing my windows out since. Richie uses his on almost all his videos too. Loved the playing too, mate.
I have to same hot plate on my 65 drri. While it's nice to crank the tubes I feel like it squashed the depth and dynamics. I had a brilliant Vibroverb and it got all those great SRV tones that is more because of the “Blackface” circuit sound than because of The Vibroverb. The smaller Bandmaster type trannies in a stock BF Vibroverb are NOT what SRV used. Courtesy of Cesar Diaz, Stevie’s amps were retrofitted with BF Bassman trannies which improved headroom, tight bottom-end at hi volume among other mods that transformed the tone Stevie got. A Deluxe Reverb, a Vibrolux Reverb, a Pro Reverb, a Super Reverb, a Vibrasonic and many other Fender amps will ALL DELIVER that basic building block of killer Fender tone that Stevie built his basic tone from. ALL OF THEM.

What i'm trying to say is I really appreciate that you're not just boasting your practice/skill and actually trying to teach/make a point.
Great tones & playing! Slightly off-topic: try doing your “hand blacking out the camera” transition with a guitar pick (loop gaffers tape on the back so you can hold it w/o it falling out of your hands). Had another thought: someone should develop a video filter/wipe transition that has an animated pick being strummed by an invisible hand and we see 6 vertical strings vibrating. And as they vibrate from being strummed, they break apart the current frame to dissolve into the new frame/shot. Just something I thought would look cool.
He played live at elmacombo with his super reverbs, his vibroverb basically went to just powering his rotating vibratone speaker. You want the true SRV tone you’re gonna need a blackface super reverb. The vibroverbs he used in his very early days and then discovered the super reverbs. Also ALL his amps were modified and far from stock so there’s that hurdle as well. He even kept using his super reverbs when he discovered the dumble amps , both were his sound at the end of his career, the vibroverb is an AWSOME amp, but not his staple amp by any means,,, waaaaaay to much miss information on TH-cam. If you’re buying a vibroverb to be like Stevie make sure you do your homework first, you will need a 64-65 blackface super reverb to achieve it.
Something you should ( and this came straight from SRV's amp tech.) The transformers in SRV's vibrolux's were swapped out for transformers from fender twins.

Back in the mid-90's, when I was DEEP in my SRV obsession, I bought a pair of Vibroverbs to tour with, a '63 2x10 & a '64 1x15. I loved those amps, but I ended up selling them during a purge of my vintage amps. It just seemed that every time I'd pull one out of storage, it would need $500-1000 worth of maintenance. The biggest issue with the Vibroverbs, especially the 1x15 is the VOLUME. They as so loud, even for a 40w amp. I wish I still had the brownface 2x10, it was sweet sounding, easy to dial in & was very reliable on tour. They were so overlooked by collectors until around 2005 when the prices exploded. I sold both of mine for the price of 1 at today's value. Still doubled my money, though.

Actually I use an E145, which is a nice and very glassy instrument speaker, but perhaps a bit much unless you're using a dual showman... anything with the 4 6l6 sound... because one of those will hold up and sound awesome. I picked up a pair of ampeg PA columns today, rare 60s era S-48, in which the early ones had 4 8" alnico drivers, set up to be full range and super-sensitive... gonna give that a try with my assorted amps... a 4x8" square cab would be an awesome tone if these are what i think they are. Even the tweeters are amazing, though won't be used. Was considering using them as studio monitors, since they really seem special... but probably guitar...

Remember too that you’re adding some compression with the light bulb mode turned on with the thd hot plate. Fun amps. Diaz would mod these; Fender made a custom shop run of these with his mods available at the flick of a switch. One big mod is a solid state rectifier with diodes. However you need to work with a tech on this. Solid state rectification in amps designed for tubes can change the voltage loads in the amp, which can be harder on the tubes and the transformers if done incorrectly. You’ll have less sag and compression with the rectifier mod at higher volume levels - less fart to the bass as well. I would personally not mod your lovely vintage example, but it may be worth finding one of those reissues. They’re great amps for SRV hounds.

I have a DVD of the El mocambo performance and one of his performances later in his career at Austin City Limits where he got himself cleaned up from excess drinking Etc. The critics put so much praise on his performances once he cleaned up. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but in my honest opinion the El mocambo performance is much better. Glistening with guitar brilliance. The endless fluidity of melodic phrasing and dynamic note choices. This performance is anything but effortless. And the word you used to describe it, "evisceral" is spot-on.

Amazing video! I have never owned an attenuator, but am finally considering one after seeing this video. I have a ‘64 Vibroverb reissue (blackface)…which Hot Plate should I be after…as in 4 ohm, 8 ohm? I want the same one you’re using, essentially. Thanks!
since i am more of a hendrix guy i like the sound of a jtm45 or even a tweed deluxe a bit more. i modded a tweed deluxe to have negative feedback like a jtm45 and it gave it a bit tighter sound and made it much more touch sensivite. the old fairytale of a non negative feedback amp beeing more touch sensitive is completely bs.. now with negative feedback i get it clean and shimmery by playing soft and distorted when digging hard.. that is kind of off-topic but important still. not many try to mod a tweed deluxe to have negative feedback. you can have it switchable as well. this vibro verb may be the best srv tone.. but for a regular guy who plays many styles maybe not worth it. but i can imagine by plugging into the texas twang you can clean up the bass quite a bit and it is perfect.
Nice job!!! Texas Twang is on my bucket list. I've been messing with the Steel Singer by NuX. Interesting dynamics and a steal at $50US. But I will make space on my peddle board quite quickly for that Texas Twang!
Hey mate, just got your Fuzz & Twang & lovin ‘em; thank you! Also, do you raise the bass side of your jesse davey pickups on your yellow guitar higher than the treble? This is how it looks to me; if so, what are your thoughts on that? You’re a ton of inspiration brother, thanks.
It sounds so awesome but what cracks me up is the fact of Stevie being presented with an attenuator and being like "WHAAAAAA???" LOL! As a guitar player that uses an AC30 pretty dang loud quite a bit I can honestly say that I also need to give an attenuator a chance because I know I have hearing loss already. My buddy told me the other day that it's not fair that my wife has to live with me while I'm making videos because she has to almost be deaf as well. I was like "well guitar is what attracted me to her in the first place so she kinda had it coming". LOL!
Ha ha, totally mate, that would be a priceless picture 🤣 definitely worth a try if you need good tone at a lower volume. And thank you for your other comment, that means the world🤠❤️
@@PedalPawn No problem dude! I'm actually jamming on my Texan Twang and 335 right now and maybe later tonight am gonna put up a video of the John Mayer Try solo with it. I LOVE the neck pickup sound on it!
Robert Cray has used the 3X10 Vibroverb (actually the Vibro King; correction prompted below) between two Matchless 1/2 stacks as his live rig for years. Robert uses the vibrato in the Vibroverb (King) alot. He gets great tones too.
@@PedalPawn I first started listening to Robert in the mid-70s before he started writing and recording his own stuff. I think he had the Vibroverb then too, but not the Matchless heads yet.
I did a side-by-side comparison a little while back and couldn’t tell a difference at the volume I was doing with the powerstation, but would still love to get a Fryette, I’ve just reached out to them for a potential collaboration, we will see if they are interested 🤠🎸
The great D130 is rated at 30 watts so be careful... ...especially since it's in an open back cab. A 40 watt Fender can have peaks of nearly double it's rated power
I was going to ask how you can stand to be in the same room with this volume monster but then I saw the hot plate. So off topic a bit, how does that attenuator work? Does it affect the tone? I want to love my tube amps but they are super loud in my room.
Ha ha, totally! Yes, I love attenuators, to my ears, it’s literally like having the tone you want, but turning the speaker volume down to bedroom volume 🎸🎛️
I lent my 64 to a friend who was a collector and a couple months later he said the amp had been stolen. At the time i didnt even know it was a valuable amp.
40 watts capability for the speaker is too little for the power of the amp. If the E130 has higher watt capability that may be why it clears up the flubbing or farting out on the low end. A 40 watt speaker doesn't sound right for this amp IMHO.
Thanks so much, I’m using some guitar picks that we make and I believe they are gauge 10 strings on here since I bought the guitar, need to do some more playing about with strings soon 🚀🎸❤️
I wholeheartedly believe speaking with an English accent 100% gets your tone closer to SRV even though Stevie was a Texan all the guys on TH-cam I see nailing it sound English to me 😂
Sweet tone. But i think its the attack you play with as much as anything. Any black face fender gets you close to that SRV tone so long as you really dig in like Stevie did oh yeah you do need a strat 😂
I've had the pleasure of playing through the '65 and the '68. I prefer the sound of the '68, using both a custom tele with a neck humbucker and by '94 Korean Strat. Next time I have $4000 in cash I plan to make a run at the '68.

Nice playing there.
ive been listening to you for awhile now, you sound better every time i listen
Man, thanks a lot for that! The key is to keep buying more gear 😅😭😝
@@PedalPawn i agree😂😂😂
As always I dig the content. Ty sir
Amazing, thanks a lot 📈🎸
Great playing and tones
Thanks so much!!
Amazing video! I have never owned an attenuator, but am finally considering one after seeing this video. I have a ‘64 Vibroverb reissue (blackface)…which Hot Plate should I be after…as in 4 ohm, 8 ohm? I want the same one you’re using, essentially. Thanks!
That’s awesome, if it’s the same as the old ones in terms of Ohmage, you would need the purple Hot Plate 8 ohm 🟪🎸
@@PedalPawn Awesome! I’ll have to figure that out first, lol. I’ve never paid much attention to ohm ratings, other than with heads and cabs.
Yes sir! I have to treble boost my amp to get anything I dig
That makes sense 📈🎸❤️
Killer video. I want your Texas twang pedal but don’t have room on my board lol. I own your tremolo pedal though.
Ha ha, thanks a lot for the support mate! PS, I’m sure your inner voice is already telling you, though there’s never not enough space 😅🙌🤠
Great job!!!
Thanks a lot mate
since i am more of a hendrix guy i like the sound of a jtm45 or even a tweed deluxe a bit more. i modded a tweed deluxe to have negative feedback like a jtm45 and it gave it a bit tighter sound and made it much more touch sensivite. the old fairytale of a non negative feedback amp beeing more touch sensitive is completely bs.. now with negative feedback i get it clean and shimmery by playing soft and distorted when digging hard.. that is kind of off-topic but important still. not many try to mod a tweed deluxe to have negative feedback. you can have it switchable as well. this vibro verb may be the best srv tone.. but for a regular guy who plays many styles maybe not worth it. but i can imagine by plugging into the texas twang you can clean up the bass quite a bit and it is perfect.
Thanks very much for the cool comment! 🎸💯🎛️
Nice job!!! Texas Twang is on my bucket list. I've been messing with the Steel Singer by NuX. Interesting dynamics and a steal at $50US. But I will make space on my peddle board quite quickly for that Texas Twang!
Awesome stuff mate, and thank you so much for the support 🤠
Nicely played, sir
Thanks a lot Brian 🎸
which speakers do you use i think he used ev12l spaker because they had very great clean headroom
Hey mate, just got your Fuzz & Twang & lovin ‘em; thank you! Also, do you raise the bass side of your jesse davey pickups on your yellow guitar higher than the treble? This is how it looks to me; if so, what are your thoughts on that? You’re a ton of inspiration brother, thanks.
saw him playin one of those in a club in Houston in 83 just b4 he broke big..it was unbelievable
That’s incredible mate 🤠🙌
What a fantastic video I actually enjoyed it Saturday is my birthday
Thanks a lot mate, and woooo! Have a great day man 🎉🎉🎉
I would love to see you check out some of the cool Brownface amps (Pro, Concert, Super, etc), I think they're super underrated
That would be awesome 🎛️🎸
The Vibroverb in this video was built by Larry Rodgers in 1996. Better tone than the Fender originals.
Awesome brotha! 🔥🎸🔥
Thanks so much mate 🚀🎸
Great stuff!
Robert Cray has used the 3X10 Vibroverb (actually the Vibro King; correction prompted below) between two Matchless 1/2 stacks as his live rig for years. Robert uses the vibrato in the Vibroverb (King) alot. He gets great tones too.
I love Robert Cray so much 💥🚀 that’s awesome gear information 🎸
@@PedalPawn I first started listening to Robert in the mid-70s before he started writing and recording his own stuff. I think he had the Vibroverb then too, but not the Matchless heads yet.
I’ve never heard of a 3-10 Vibroverb.
@@charlesbolton8471 Opps. I was confusing the Vibroverb and the Vibro King. The Long is the 3X10. Thanks for prompting the correction.
@@georgestevens1502
I thought it was probably the Vibro King you were talking about. Those are great amps.
yea Guvnor how many years they make the Black face amp? years/ ?
New life goal, build a vibroverb i can live in...
Great tone and soloing 👍
Thanks very much, really appreciate that
You gotta ditch that hot plate and get a Freyette Powerstation. It's designed to let the amps tone ring true.
I did a side-by-side comparison a little while back and couldn’t tell a difference at the volume I was doing with the powerstation, but would still love to get a Fryette, I’ve just reached out to them for a potential collaboration, we will see if they are interested 🤠🎸
@Pedal Pawn They would benefit from your support, I'm sure.
I built for DiazAmplification 2004/5 n Have the xact mods made to it, NFS of course..
That’s ace!! 🎸🚀
Sounds absolutely incredible Chris😃😃Did this Vibroverb have the Cesar Diaz mods or was it stock standard?
Thanks so much mate, this is stock without mods 🎛️🎸
Swap the D130 for an E130. See if that doesn't help the flub. Great video. ✌️
40 watts capability for the speaker is too little for the power of the amp. If the E130 has higher watt capability that may be why it clears up the flubbing or farting out on the low end. A 40 watt speaker doesn't sound right for this amp IMHO.
That! Stevie had E130 in his vibroverbs in the early days ,so am i and no flub with these💪
@@vivienverdier Wasn't No Flubs a hit for TLC?
@@georgestevens1502 L O L
@@vivienverdier 100%. Vivien knows his tones. An incredible player, awesome guy, and one of my favorites. Thank you Vivien.
You should do a video with Ritchie to give him some more exposure. That channel and him as a player is too good to not be bigger than it is.
Richie is a great friend, and we’d love to do a podcast with him soon 🚀🎸
Pls share the backing track
Best tone and closest i heard of srv tone ❤
Sounds beautiful!
I’m curious. What guitar picks and strings do you like?
Keep up the great work sir
Thanks so much, I’m using some guitar picks that we make and I believe they are gauge 10 strings on here since I bought the guitar, need to do some more playing about with strings soon 🚀🎸❤️
I wholeheartedly believe speaking with an English accent 100% gets your tone closer to SRV even though Stevie was a Texan all the guys on TH-cam I see nailing it sound English to me 😂
🤣🤣🙌❤️
I love his accent! 😊 I'm closer to SRV's accent though, since I'm a southerner (half Texan on my Mama's side). The guitar sounds great too, lol.
Sweet tone. But i think its the attack you play with as much as anything. Any black face fender gets you close to that SRV tone so long as you really dig in like Stevie did oh yeah you do need a strat 😂
Thanks a lot for that insight mate, you could be right 🤠🚀
Nice !
Need room mic to get that full Stevie studio sound, gives it a ton of body
That makes sense 📈💯
You should also be using Ibanez TS 808 or TS 9 Tube Screamer along with Vox Wah-Wah Pedal
Love those pedals! Got a video planned with those ASAP, this was just more of a clean sound test 🎸
@@PedalPawn Cool can't wait
Fantastic !!!
Thanks a lot mate! 🎸🚀
@@PedalPawn I wanted to say more but you left me floored, it was that good !
@@archstanton3763 ha ha, wow thank you so much mate ❤️
Its awesome man!!!!
Thank you so much for watching mate
I've had the pleasure of playing through the '65 and the '68. I prefer the sound of the '68, using both a custom tele with a neck humbucker and by '94 Korean Strat. Next time I have $4000 in cash I plan to make a run at the '68.
Blackface Vibroverb's were built only in 1963 and 1964, so not sure what amp you're referring to.
good score, friend!
Thanks mate 🎛️🚀
1st album was mostly the Jackson brown owned dumble.
Sometimes i envy you. Here I am just trying to save up to get one of your pedals 😂.
🤣❤️ thank you very much for that anyway mate 🎛️🚀
I love attenuators
Me too 👂 🔫 aha!
It's a bummer when you have to sell something reluctantly. I sold my DeLorean to buy a home. I'll get another one day 👍
Totally mate! That was always my mindset with gear, unless it’s a totally unique item, you can normally buy stuff back at a later date 📈🎸
@@PedalPawn indeed. As much as we like these possessions they can be replaceable most of the time. Sometimes you have to think with your head and not your heart. I've built my own silicon fuzz pedal too.
Still, does not show it's yours. just taking photos right Govneour.
I have this same amp, but it says MAGNATONE on the front. (Some of you will get this).
Sounds like a twin
💥🎸🚀
You’re wrong… You CAN live in the Vibroverb!!😂
🤣🙌📈🎛️

Nice try kid. Maybe change the tremolo springs out. I heard there's magic in that. And if that doesn't work, maybe spend another $2500 in tube rolling.
Tremolo springs ? You mean reverb ?
