When you spoke about amplifiers, I agree. Playing loud really takes practice. I'm fortunate enough to have a practice area where anything goes. My current rig has me playing through a '70s Twin Reverb and a Plexi Half-Stack. I've gone through all kinds of Attenuators and found the best sound happens when each of the amps are running about 75% full-power. The natural harmonics start coming into play and it seriously takes time to both dial it in and then control it all and then stand there and immerse yourself into the pressure waves.
loved the video.. and all your videos, really; you hit the nail on the head with this whole barebones approach to recording. I know you mentioned a while back that you study old SRV bootlegs and different shows of his, would you ever consider making a video like this talking about how you got learning his style and how you studied his phrases? cheers!
Awesome videos. All of them. Thanks for being the guy that’s not a copycat artist - the one who encourages everyone to find their own voice, and enjoy this blues stuff thatcc be we love so much. You’re the man. Thanks. TQ
I think if someone has a space that they can't play loud all the time like me then definitely get a attenuator to rock out with. Cause you can get full volume performance from an amp without the actual volume. I really enjoy the channel and the info that comes along with it, keep up the good work and looking forward to more content.
Plus what I really like about your channel is that you don't have a bunch of post production crap that a LOT of Utubers use to make themselves and the pedals they are pushing sound better That's honesty my friend Goes a long way
Simple and effective, many of us grew up listening to cassette tapes so learning licks from you on YT video is just awesome. We thank you. The tone, touch, and phrasing you have is really impressive. Have you ever done Hendrix ballad songs like Electric Ladyland?
Love all that you do brother! You are true treasure for us Guitar fanatics hahaha! Your vids and live vids truly feel like l’m hanging with one of my buddies, no BS just great content. Wishing you the best for 2022! 🔥🎸🔥
Really love your videos man, binge watch them often. I think a little nugget of information I could offer is that stevie would often play with an almost gypsy style pick approach. In many live performances and especially the acoustic video you can see his wrist is curved and he is playing with rest strokes especially on low strings, but sometimes on high strings like in Lenny. Would heavily recommend you dig into this as it was a hugely important realization for me to come to. Peace and love
I found your channel when I was trying to figure out how SRV got his tone and its cool when you talk about all the details and how everything comes together. I don't think I'll ever get a real vintage strat but I have a Fender custom shop guitar that sounds great and a reissue vibroverb. One thing I've struggled with was having the high string action high enough to sustain without buzz, but low enough to get those huge slide dives stevie would do on the high strings as an accent. I feel the tuning down a half step is a big part of stevies formula, the lower tension changes the feel a lot. Taking the time to fine tune the truss rod helped too. I wonder if the dumble stevie used on the Texas Flood album was a smaller combo, or if they recorded it with a larger cabinet like the 4x12 he started touring with.
Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and being such a humble person. Never change Nik! I wish you a great NYE. Peace and love from the Netherlands!
Stevie Ray Vaughn, Gary Moore, Albert King and Freddy King played with more intensity than any other guitar players they were the best RIP to all of those talented guys that inspired so many of us..
Right back at you Nik, I've been a practicing Guitarist since 1974 and am still subscribed so I can see what you have to share with us. Thank You Sir. You're part of the reason I decided to build a '61 inspired Stratocaster.
All the best Nik. I found your videos in the beginning of 2021 and have watched almost all of your videos. Like most, I enjoy your channel as it’s a no B.S., straight-up, and honest channel. I definitely look forward to each new video. Happy 2022.
19:45 Hell, even a Blues jr. When I got my BJ IV my brother came over and turned the bass down to 2 and cranked the treble and mids to 11, turned up the master volume and went to town. I do the same thing with my Twin Reverb and it works.
Man, wish I had found you years ago, but I didn't find anyone really until 2020. Just never had a youtube habit before the pandemic. I moved back to New England a couple years ago, a pandemic happened (I basically lived in an ER where I worked for all of 2020-2021) and I still don't know any of the shops in the area so been trying to do all of this on my own which I got no business doing as I know exactly squat about this. Seems like I got a few things right but still needs so much tweaking. I don't want or need to exactly replicate anyone else's tone--but I would like to have a better understanding of how you shape the tone that you want. I definitely appreciate the bare bones format. Personally I prefer it over hype and colored LED backlighting. Much rather watch a regular dude sitting in front of a stack of amps and just get right to the fun stuff. anyway, i know this is months after you've posted but, thanks for all the great content.
I enjoy your videos and your passion for Stevie. The right hand hybrid stuff is definitely a big part of the sound, and also the pick sideways. I highly recommend that ro all players. Nice playing as well. Keep up the great work
Sorry I missed this on my 66th birthday last week. I love this channel, because you are so knowledgable about guitars, amps, effects, and playing, especially two of my favorites!! I also enjoy when you have guest guitarists of the best kind, like JD Simo and Phillip Sayce. As for SRV's strat setup, Dan Erlewine posted the exact measurements, which were different than what I had imagined. His action was about what I use, medium height, but not what I would call "high". His pickups were very close to the strings - closer than I had imagined (ya'll can look it up for the exact measurements). I keep my pickups farther from the strings than most do, but it varies depending on the guitar - some pickups need to be closer than others. Overwound pickups, like Epiphone P-90, sound better to me farther from the strings - my Casino Coupe's neck pickup is about 1/4" from the strings, but still sound great - I could shim it up, but that just makes is more muddy sounding. Maybe that's why Epiphone ships them this way? There are pictures of Peter Green playing his famous '59 Les Paul with the neck pickup way down in the body on the low strings side. I like the clarity and woodiness that having the pickups low produce, and don't mind having less output in most cases - just turn it up right? Your channel should go viral this year Nick, you deserve it. It's frustrating to see some channels that aren't even close to as good, yet having huge followings. Let's help get this channel out there to people who don't know about it yet ya'll, by posting it in our comments at other channels, etc. Don't change a thing bro, you don't need fancy production to communicate with us, and your playing sounds great, even if it's just being recorded on an iPhone, or whatever. Few people have your in depth knowledge, likely why people like JD and Phillip like talking with you, plus you are a down-to-earth real person (not trying to inflate your ego, just telling the truth). Cheers to you, and to all your followers - have a happy, healthy 2022 ya'll....................!
Thanks for all the awesome tips Nick! I’ll be setting up my strat this evening and bringing the super out to the porch. You’ve been a real inspiration over the past few years dude!
Hey Nik Great channel Love the tone tips Hope you have a fantastic 2022 Not sure right away if your using the Blues Power but really thinking about getting one to use as a TS alternative and also to tame a 100 watt amp to usable volume Plus it's just a good quality pedal to tailor your tone around Thanks again for all the good strat tone tips Cheers And hey man your very welcome 😁
Great insight as usual.. I find it difficult to play loud..especially at home.. a d have to ride the vol knob all the time.. rather than just laying your hands over the strings.. and it is different than using an attenuator.. it really makes a difference as well as speaker breakup.. it's just something that us hobby players have the hardest time with.. my 1970 Marshall has never been over 3 .. lol . I'm afraid of it.. and my wife would kick me out . Cheers man..
I’ve been telling people that can’t afford vintage or high end guitars to build their own. I prefer to do this. I’ve tried different necks so I can find what’s comfortable. Also I’ve found that the fender 59 pups super low almost flush with the pick guard sound great and get as close to an srv sound without getting too fancy. I’ve noticed that nitro paint that’s been almost worn off does something to the feel of the guitar. I’ve been playing a hard tail lately that I’ve gotten to prefer
The fender 59 pickups are amazing imo- I use those. I purchased mark Foley pre cbs pick ups for a shit ton of money and didn’t like them. I think people just have a notion that it’s fender mass market pups so they avoid it…
@@demeanor3704 I was just thinking that the pickups that Dan Patlansky uses are killer. I think that Mark Foley guitar projects make them. They sound awesome. Idk how much they cost.
@@Slovy_ I believe those are the Number 1 set - I have the pre cbs 60’s. Yeah I agree they sound great. All subjective I guess. You also have to note Dan can probably make any pickup sound amazing lol
I'm getting a definite Dallas vibe from you. :) You from that area? All the Wikipedia pages and the like say that's where Stevie was from but it was actually Oak Cliff at the time, before it was annexed.
Quick comment. I have a penciled copy of SRV’s handprint from Fargo, ND. His hands were surprisingly not that huge.....but he was around 5’8” to 5’9”. His hands were about 7.25 inches from the bottom of his hand to the tip of his middle finger.
Hi Nick. Great videos and thanks for such invaluable content. I just purchased a 1963 super reverb. It’s been cut down to a head only. Everything is original except valves. I have an opportunity to to build what ever cabinet and speakers I want plus I’m ok to mod the amp. Could you please give me some advice on what speakers or speaker to use plus any mods you would do. Happy to email you if more convenient?

Had my neighbour knocking on my door after putting the volume up to 3 on my twin reverb…
Do you think plugging the Strat into a tweed style amp would get the SRV sound? Since fender super reverb has an entirely different character to a tweed.
High wattage like a tweed pro or bassman , of course. Add a reverb unit to it and have fun
What’s your opinion regarding the Chicago iron versus the Dunlop cheese wedge Octavio
The iron had some build issues at times. The wedge is my favorite
Do you know what pickup position SRV liked the most?
I used to deck my trems
Now i dont and it rings more for some reason
Plus if you’re not careful the trem screws will come through the back of the body
They always poke through on old strats
Man, speakers are driving me crazy right now. I Ike the volume that comes with higher wattage/more efficient speakers, but they usually kill the high end.
Ev. Jbl. Altec. Fane. Will keep high end easily
Bro please tell me, what does “Goose the treble” mean?
Turn it up...
I see no problem getting good Srv tones in your bedroom, only issue is you’re bedroom would need to be about 2500 sq feet with a lot of sound deadening treatment….! 🤪
Great info - what cable company do you recommend without breaking the bank?
I use the cheapest cables i can find in the bin at guitar center
I dont fender did it backwards
Huh?
