I had just finished a tour in South Korea in Dec. 1986 while in the Army and a real good buddy pick me up from the airport in Louisville KY, and he drove me directly to Nashville TN to see Stevie Ray at the Opry House at what was Opryland back then. Best concert I ever attended, and that place was built for acoustics.
Can we take a moment to appreciate Chris Layton (drums) and Tommy Shannon (bass). They are a CRIMINALLY underrated rhythm section. Seriously badass to hang with Stevie.
You mean besides David Gilmore doing comfortably numb ? I did see him live opening for Hughy fucking Lewis but they had to make him get off the stage, I have a hard time drying my back off with a towel and he can play that guitar with his shoulder blades as good as any one else can play in the front

There was nobody on this planet who could speak to a guitar like Stevie did. Many can wail and shred but none had his groove . I said what I said
Possibly the best live performance ever. Three guys on a stage; no light show, no lasers, no special effects, no smoke machine, no backup singers. Just pure unadulterated, raw talent, a love of their craft, and a gratitude for those who appreciate what they do.
Under-rated comment, to whom it may concern. Raw talent, with such a powerful connection/understanding of eachother in a 3 peice band... the best times of music 🎶
I saw Stevie love over two dozen times, and I remember hearing he died on my drive into work. I had to pull over and sit on the side of the road for about 20 minutes. Almost 30 years later and I still miss him every day!
Ya but like many other artists, my man had a little addiction. Some like the ups and others like the downs. Whether anyone will admit it , cocaine had a huge part of the influence in Vaughn's life and especially his music. He would not have played the same sober or on opiates.
Real funny Vinnie. Especially coming from a guy who has a pot plant next to his name. The lose of any musician is a tragedy. No matter what his lifestyle or circumstances.

When I was around 15 or 16, my cousin gave me a copy of this DVD. And I watched/studied it for I think a year and a half. Watching it all the time. It still blows me away to this day. I also heard in an interview with Tommy Shannon, that Stevie was on enough cocaine to kill a horse this night. Crazy, man.
BB King once sat in and listened and after they played together shook his head side to side, and then bowed his head down towards SRV before calling him a black boy trapped in a white boys body... SRV died too soon, too young, and would've given us even more of the greatest blues songs, licks, and tunes ever laid down.. 34 years later and who knows how many songs, albums, inspirations and concerts he would've given us???!?!? 😢
I disagree. That was a master class on how to be a CONDUIT for the blues! He just opens the portal and says "use me". Hell, the man literally had dreams where angels showed him secret chord changes!
My dad introduced me to SRV when I was a kid, and now I'm 23, I've been playing guitar for 15 years, and I don't think I can ever thank my dad enough for showing me this concert. This guy has become my absolute idol for music in general and has only strengthened my love for this instrument. My dad also likes to watch this concert a lot, so if he sees this, I love you very much, old man.
so weird i needed to hear this. i’m the same age. got into playing young. this live show specifically was the first thing that ever got me inspired. i owe so much to my dad for teaching me, who is gone now but i watch these occasionally and im just so happy to experience it again. glad you got the same dude!
No auto tune, No ear piece, No editing and nothing digital. This badass mofo known as Stevie Ray Vaughan showed up with a beat up strat, plugged in, turned the volume up to max and freaking blew the roof off of the house with his amazing guitar and vocal skills. An atomic explosion of absolute perfection. The greatest pure raw talent that ever existed. Thank God for SRV ❤❤❤❤
Kipps Guitar: Dude….I was just making a point that his pure raw sound was amazing. A lot of the younger generation have grown up without listening to artists from the 70’s and 80’s. I’m with you my friend. I’m a 61 year old blues player to my core. I’m actually surprised that I even knew what auto tune is. I’m damn sure that the limited effects (tube screamer / wah wah pedals) that SRV used have rarely been used at an eardrum busting level. Gotta love it
Calling this man a musician is the biggest understatement. He's on a higher plane. He's plugged into something timeless, eternal. You look at it and think, "thats a guy with a guitar". You listen to it and you are transported away from this earth. It moves you in your bones, like witnessing your first baby being born. You can never be the same after hearing him. No words can describe it. He doesnt "play music". He bares his soul. Its all laid out there for you to hear it. The pain, the joy, the hurt, the disappointment. These feelings are so deep and powerful they can't be verbalized. But there he is, reaching into your soul and making you understand what it means to be alive. Thank you Stevie Ray.
Well said. I was fortunate enough to see him live 3-4 times back in the 80s. I was an instant fan after hearing him for the first time. His feeling in unmatched. His playing comes from much deeper than his fingers.
This was the only man, ever, that deciphered the language of Hendrix. And did it perfectly. No one compares to this man. And I don't think anyone ever will.

El Mocambo is a small music venue in Toronto, couldn't have been more than a few hundred people in attendance, as it has been said many times before in the comments, thanks to those who had the foresight of filming this performance so that millions of people could enjoy the brilliance of SRV.
An even more historic concert happened there on the night of March 8, 1977 when mystery band the Cockroaches turned out to be the Rolling Stones, with April Wine opening. And even more shocking was the sight of the Prime Minister's wife Margaret Trudeau stepping out of Mick Jagger's limo on the night of her sixth wedding anniversary!!
@@dobbandroach : Great voice. Great feel. But I'd put Buddy Guy above him in range and the religious experience of pure vocals. Watch a Buddy Guy concert, when he gets spiritual on the crowd. Stevie didn't have that. Jimi didn't have that, quite, either.
Eric Clapton talks about this . He said Stevie was the only guitarist he knew that never got lost once . That even the greatest would still have times where the hit a dead end or dropped the thread but not Stevie . It's like he lived in the present and future at the same time
I don't think he could have hit a bad note in this performance. He was possessed by some higher power or something. This was an absolutely perfect performance.
I’ve seen hundreds of videos of Stevie playing. And after watching this one, I truly believe that in all those videos Stevie was holding back, playing conservatively, saving his energy, I just think he just let it all out while playing this song. Just let the damn break and have all his talent flood the room.
Pianists still study Chopin's work with amazement and wonder, 170 years after his death. I've no doubt in 2090, guitarists will still study SRV's work with amazement and wonder.
I guarantee by that time all instruments will be wind based once frequency spectrums and tonal manipulation studies have developed. String instruments will be a quirky side interest

My name is Derek Caldwell Sr. My story goes like this. I have 5 kids and I was addicted to drugs. I was in such a bad place in my life. I love my kids and my wife of 18 years. I have a real passion for Stevie's playing. One day I was so depressed I was listening to him and I heard one of his talks that he does when he plays "Life with out you". And he talked about how he almost died from cocaine and alcohol. I started crying and I just started to pray and between him and my family and God, I have been sober for five Months. I know that ain't long but I went from living in a basement with my 4 kids at the time and my wife. I cried for them because they had it rough. I felt like less of a human. I thank God and Stevie Ray Vaughan. I will never forget what the power your music and fight for sobriety done for me. Love ya Stevie and may you rest in peace. We have a home of our own and we both have a car and my kids have respect for there father now. To me that is priceless. Bless you all who have left a positive comment about S.R.V.
Guys let’s be real …this is a rarity in life when one’s music/guitar playing is living and breathing ….you can feel it, it is as realavant today…it stays with you …and grows with you …
Yeah, the slow blues is the most potent of all blues. The voice of a guitar cannot be equaled in pure ,raw feeling. Stevie's Texas Flood is one of the best.
I am 23 years old. i found SRV within the past few months and i can definitively say I have heard nothing better. He speaks to my soul, I can't even explain it. I can listen this to this cat play forever aver and always find something new to love. He has single handedly gotten me through this covid shit. I genuinely cannot think of my life before this man. Just by finding him I have found artist I never would have thought of. Thank you SRV for everything you did for music. I will never be the same after finding you. It honestly breaks my heart that I will never get the chance to see you live. RIP. I know you are shedding with the greats up top.
If you play guitar, if you love the blues, if you love music, he's a legend amongst legends, I'm so glad you are here to help us carry blues, a true American art form, to the next century.
That's what the blues is all about. You will never grow tired of it. Lots of folks to listen to. Try Marcus King, a guy about your age if you haven't already. He's awesome I'm sure there are a million people on here who could tell you tons of folks to listen to. I got to see Stevie play. And I was just in the mood for some today
I've been playing guitar for over 40 years now. If I live another 40 years (highly unlikely), practicing every day 12 hours straight, I would never even come remotely close to how amazingly he shreds through a solo...as he is playing it sight unseen behind his back. :)
I was there. Everyone's jaw was on the floor. i thought we were going to see David Bowie's guitar player. Then this. Toronto's El Mo was never the same.
I am tragically very new to SRV only having discovering him just last week. In the 9:30 that this video took, I was convinced this is quite possibly the best music performance I've ever seen in my life. And I'm 39 years old and have been to tons of concerts. He is now my favourite guitarist of all time. So RAW. So much passion. I also developed a saying "if you're not sweating, are you really playing the blues?"
He inspired me to play, but the funny thing when I first heard him I thought he was another Jimi Hendrix playing with all that soul I figured he was black. Turns out he isn’t and is from oaklciff Dallas tx 💪🏾🎶🎶 rip
I just recently discovered him too in the past 3-4 months, for whatever reason. I am a fan of so much older music 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, as well as some newer alternative rock. Very little, if anything, touches what this guy pours out performance after performance. What a blessing he was here when he was, but what a shame he passed at a far too young an age. On top, he had a heart of gold and conquered demons of drug/alcohol issues. This band, as well as him, needs more recognition. Stevie's guitar playing is vicious and is 100% passion. Unbelievable.
This needs to be in the National Archives and the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as the BEST guitar performance in the history of mankind. This way it will be preserved and available for future generations to enjoy and be inspired by. It will NEVER get old watching this. NEVER! Stevie , We miss you and your music. This is what will separate man from machine. Of course a robot could learn the notes.. but without that soul, it would fall completely flat. Miss you Stevie. Rest easy my man.
As a regular at the El Mocambo, I had the pleasure of hearing him live. That one song alone felt like two hours. Never since, have I heard or seen anything close to this performance. Stevie strangled every single inch of that guitar. It is just what he did naturally.
@ nobody important.. His fingers were so strong because of the strings he used much much thicker then the regular ones, it's also a part of his unique sound
@@markeyhendrix I actually started playing on 10's and am going back to 9's. I love the feel of 10's but want the action of 9's. I'd recommend to anyone starting though, to start on 10's. Cheers to you friend, and I hope you have a great, lifelong guitar journey!
I started with 12s when I was 13 because of this guy, I've been using 10s for a bit now. About to get back to 12s. I think it's the sound of the attack that I miss. You can hit so damn hard.
This is, without a doubt, the GREATEST blues performance by a guitarist that has EVER been demonstrated in the history of the guitar. I have been playing music all my life, influencing my style after this legend. And there is NO WAY, anything compares close to this. Absolutely nothing. SRV is just a different breed. End of story.
It just never gets old. How he squeezes that much emotion into his vibrato I’ll never understand. The whole thing just feels ANGRY and passionate. It’s just so blues
Jelly Jelly I think his band members were worried about him. With the cocaine he was playing a hundred and fifty miles an hour! Usually after a concert his clothes were dripping with sweat! I bet his fingers were literally thrashed
I read an interview with his guitar tech who said Stevie would sometimes have to glue his fingertips/callouses back on with super-glue. Search "stevie ray vaughan callouses"
I am listening to Leon Russell , Ray Charles , Lynyrd Skynrd , BB King and now Stevie and thinking the same thing ...Seems like they should live forever . PK
I can't imagine how good it would feel just wanting to all of a sudden want to play behind your back I say yeah killer performance glad I got to see it seems to me it would be like seeing someone smash a guitar or something I'd relish that ;)
In 1991, TX governor Ann Richards declared October 3 (which would have been SRV's 37th birthday) Stevie Ray Vaughan Commemoration Day. Ann Richards wrote an article that appears in the booklet for the SRV box set. She also once said that saying, "God bless Texas" and, "God bless ZZ Top" is saying the same thing twice, so she knew a thing or two about this stuff.
There is a statue of Stevie on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, about a week ago Antifa scumbags spray painted and defaced it. If they get caught their time in the pen is gonna be hard time, and I mean it just like you think. Stevie was one of Texas's most incredible son's.
I don’t think the average person pays attention to what he’s doing with his right hand. He constantly changes the pickup switch and tone knobs during songs and does it so fast you barely see it if you’re not watching. The man was an anomaly. I’ve never seen another person reach in and pull the guts out of a Strat the way he could. Truly missed still today 🎸 🎵 ❤️

Imagine being a student, professor and god of a genre and instrument, and you still treat it all like your a kid in your garage just jamming out because you simply love playing and jamming with pals. No cheesy chord arrangements generated by the music executives for you to play, no worrying about playing the hits to sell records, no worrying about keeping the song under 4 minutes, no playing to click tracks. Just a guy who probably wore that same outfit off the tour bus- ate his morning bacon, eggs, toast and coffee at the local joint in them, and came on stage to share with that room his joy of playing; while literally leaving nothing left in the tank. Probably grabbed a burger and fries after the show, hopped in the bus with the band and went to the next bar or small joint to humbly blow more minds. Probably cost those folks 10 bucks and a couple beers to sit there and experience something they've never heard or experienced since. You don't get people this skilled, grounded and humble at the upper echelons of talent these days, that also have the creative domain to play whatever the hell they want, and share it so completely. We need this authenticity back.
Billy Strings. Marcus King. Tyler Childers. Shawn James. None of them can outplay Stevie, or be Stevie. But they have that kind of vibe you’re talking about.
I've said it before: Anyone who was fortunate to be in the audience that night better NEVER take it for granted! One of the most masterful performances of all time, anywhere.
Check out Billy Strings if you haven't already.. In no way would I ever compare the 2, due to possibly every single thing about them is different besides their love for the guitar.. but Billy is one of the cleanest flat pickers that I have listened to.. Plays on an acoustic. Plays bluegrass but it's more of a hybrid bluegrass/rock or something. Definitely worth a listen for sure. Some songs I like are Home, Turmoil & Tinfoil, Meet me at the Creek, Dust in a Baggie.
I was touring Europe, 1990. Returned to London and staying with a friend from South Africa. Headed out to book for the STV concert which I had planned to be back for. My friend met me down the road. Returning from work, by chance. I explained I was heading out to by my ticket. He gave me the news.... Cold Shot was the first song I had heard from this man. And was blown away. And it was a Cold Shot indeed to heart of the sad end to this possibly greatest rock guitarist that ever lived.

My dad was at that concert too!!! Whenever I'm asked what musician I wish I could have seen play live, SRV is the one.
Nice.
That is a really awesome friend, glad you have someone like that.
That sounds like an amazing adventure.

That guitar needed a cigarette, new strings, and a fret job after that beatdown. Absolute talent. One of the best ever.

Stevie broke a guitar string during a live performance but played it off as if nothing had happened.
That is the best description I have ever read.

I hope you're wrong, but I think you're right.
Arguably the single most insane guitar performance ever.

Awesome
I saw Stevie love over two dozen times, and I remember hearing he died on my drive into work. I had to pull over and sit on the side of the road for about 20 minutes. Almost 30 years later and I still miss him every day!
Yes him and Randy roads wow two greats!
This man's brain is literally melded to the art of guitar.
The fact that he was one of the greatest guitarists ever really overshadowed his great singing voice
And he actually wasn’t a fan of his singing voice at all, which shocks me
Tbh to me SRV's singing voice is kind of an acquired taste. For a long time I used to merely tolerate his singing because of his guitar skills.
First time I heard him I didn't know anything about him. I was walking down sixth street in Austin and there was a crowd outside a club listening.
Jimi Hendrix reincarnated.
Ya but like many other artists, my man had a little addiction. Some like the ups and others like the downs. Whether anyone will admit it , cocaine had a huge part of the influence in Vaughn's life and especially his music. He would not have played the same sober or on opiates.
Even his beads of sweat are dripping in tempo
That is good brother!! Everything SRV did was seemed better than any other guitarist!
The amount of cocaine and Incandescent lights it takes to sweat like this is staggering, I'm surprised he lived through it.

But there he is, reaching into your soul and making you understand what it means to be alive. Thank you Stevie Ray.

I just recently discovered him too in the past 3-4 months, for whatever reason. I am a fan of so much older music 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, as well as some newer alternative rock. I saw him do this in a small club in Dallas in the early 80s and could not believe what I was seeing and hearing. Thank you, Stevie.
His soul played that guitar.
I'm a Florida boy, but Jesus I hope Texas has a State holiday for it's favorite son on the guitar. If it was up to me, I would.
And Billy Gibbons
There is a statue of Stevie on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, about a week ago Antifa scumbags spray painted and defaced it. If they get caught their time in the pen is gonna be hard time, and I mean it just like you think. Stevie was one of Texas's most incredible son's.
@@m2goofy760 ahh man, that's just incredibly sad!!
Don’t forget Johnny winter...
SO freakin' true man. His control of the tone of that guitar is as good as it gets.
That happens when you're born with a guitar in your hand like Stevie was
@@briscoesjug1026 it's so unreal man, if I spent the next ten years learning nonstop I don't think I could ever come close to his feel, it's like he's not even trying and it's just flowing out of him. I have also heard he was cooked out of his mind during this which probably added to how insane it was
If that gets you going you should watch Jeff Beck's right hand!
@@molly_daly4066 all honesty Stevie only got better when he got sober if you can believe that it's the truth
Superb comment.
Billy Strings. Marcus King. Tyler Childers. Shawn James. None of them can outplay Stevie, or be Stevie. But they have that kind of vibe you’re talking about.
Amen
They exist, but the music business is so fucked we don’t see them anymore. there are people out there keeping the faith.
Incredibly well said!!!
I've said it before: Anyone who was fortunate to be in the audience that night better NEVER take it for granted! One of the most masterful performances of all time, anywhere.
No words. RIP Stevie. Lucky to have seen him twice. I will never forget it
Me too, August 31st 1985 Commodore Ballroom. Simply unforgettable...RIP Stevie
Lucky dog 😎
I saw him too! In Austin. Where did you see him?
@@shawncicc1515 saw him at the Wiltern theatre in Los Angeles. Back to back nights. Buddy Miles played drums for the encore.
was at his last show
Electric blues...played at the highest level. Period.
I can listen to srv anytime. No need to say more
Im watching someone play 8 years before I was born, 30 years later and it is the best thing I have ever seen.
Stevie Ray Vaughn " You are welcome "
Don't get laid much huh?
Greatest guitar player to ever live and it isn’t close. Eddie, bucket,BB, frampton and Mayer listen to Stevie before bed
Stevie’s the only guitarist I’ve ever seen where he can play like an absolute madman but EVERY SINGLE NOTE is still perfectly placed
Dimebag Darrell too ;)
Add Holdsworth, Metheny, Vai, and Scott Henderson to that list! But yeah he SLAYS here!
Wyatt Brownell Guthrie Govan probably has the best technique of any guitarist
Three words -- National Historic Registry.
That's where this should go! One of the greatest blues performances of the modern era.
This is called being fluent in guitar. It’s literally just an extension of his body at this point he just makes it say whatever he’s thinking. A true master.
Totally. It’s cliche, but the music just flows through him. Like he’s a vessel.
i'll show you an extension
He played from his soul.
The greatest performance ever recorded live. Nobody will ever or has ever played with the raw Intensity the Stevie did
I agree this is the greatest live performance I've ever seen.
That shit is pure magic
Hendrix ‘68 Winterland
Philip sayce does. Everytime!
Rob Wilson ever heard of death metal?
A performance like this would have Jimi Hendrix nodding his head in approval.
for sure
Fuckin right
this is the best comment!!!
Both are legends... Stevie a much better singer, though.
@@dudeguybro stevie has one of the greatest voices I've heard.
By watching this performance and knowing about it, you've entered a new plane of existence. Congratulations.
Boeing, Delta?
Having SRV was a true gift from the rock gods during an age of mediocre hair bands and electro-pop.
