Probably a real camera as I love playing with lenses and I use my camera outside of content but this can certainly cut the costs for people who like to have multiple angles or are just starting and don't want to learn cameras yet.
I bought a Canon EOS M200 for my streaming and TH-cam and for the price I am really happy with it. I don't know about the US prices but here in Germany the Elgato would be less than half of the Canon. If I was just streaming and didn't have the need to shoot some proper video footage then yeah this would probably be the one I'd go for :D
One of the few dudes who I feel can give credible reviews even when sponsored so I picked one up... couldn't get the low profile arm though it was out of stock.

He explains at the end that he still thinks that's a better setup (camlink and GoPro which can be upgraded to a mirror less later), but he understands that it's a lot more complicated, and if someone wants the simplicity of just plugging in a webcam then this is webcam that doesn't look like trash.

The combo of FINALLY decent software and a good sensor means, for me, that I will not bother with a DSLR. This is good enough to make the hassle of setting up a DSLR a no-go, by comparison, unless you are already doing that stuff.
Bit late to the party, but can I ask - I take it this is just a web camera, you can't actually video with this can you? I know - or think it's for live streaming, but can you actually video with it. OOr can I use Streamyard and just video through that without going live, as I need to do both. Thank you.
@@dozydoe It's just a webcam. If you wanted to make recordings you could use something like OBS on your PC, though, but it has no portable usage (except with maybe a laptop) and no onboard memory or software for recording.

I know of quite a few general (non-stream) people who WFH now who are using Key Lights and decent mics. They;re on camera as much as many streamers each day and will be really interested in something like this.
It took me a second to realize that the bottom half his shirt was actually being displayed properly compared to the other two webcams. The Facecam is insanely impressive and honestly seems to be all that I would need in terms of that next tier up in camera pricing. Well done Elgato lol
Daym that's crispy. The fact that the settings saved to the camera makes it the best I have bought my parents so many different high-end webcams to use for their zoom and all that once I dial in the settings and the software crashes or the computer reboots suddenly they're all out of focus and out of field of view and the colors look all weird and I have to come over and reset it up !
My first impression when you turned on the camera right out of the box was WOW very clear and crisp. Thank you for reviewing this as I am looking to upgrade myself. The software looks to be a big plus.
unlike GoPro who took a step back recently by removing the ability to control parameters like shutter speed, ISO and white balance from their mobile app in their last update. I using it to stream with the media mod which disables the back screeen.......aaaaggggrrrhhhhh!,

I'm not sure if this was intentional (I bet it probably was, knowing Harris), but I like that you left your phone screen on in the top-down camera view when unboxing and having twitter, tiktok, twitch, etc social media apps visible along with the brand logo background to subtly promote those platforms if you happen to glace over there lol. Just goes to show how much effort Harris puts into the detail of these videos!
besides the blur in the background, when you switched from your DLSR to the facecam, I couldn't tell much of a difference. I might pick it up sometime. IDK though. I might just get a DSLR with a wide-angle lens, because I am a retro gamer/speedrunner, and in the original super mario, they have to verify that you are on an actual nes, not a clone system, and having a camera like my phone connected to the xplt vcam software, gives me a wide enough field of view where they can see me resetting the console, playing on an original NES(right now I have a clone system.) and they can actually see the controller in my hands pressing the buttons, and it's just a really cool experience. every time I get asked what camera I use in the chat, I say I have my phone connected to the vcam software, and with the software blur, they think it's a DSLR and it's awesome.
I love this so far, but I for the life of me cannot get this camera to stop freezing after 45 mins everytime. I have a dedicated 3.1 USB card up to 10GB bandwith, my camlink works wonders, but the camera itself just freezes all the time and i have to reset it.
@@PilgrimMinistry Replacing it with a new cable seems to fix the issue. It did it for me and for others. Pretty lame how the faulty the original cable is that comes with the webcam. But now I'm dealing with flickering issues. Wasn't happening before but does it now. Also, the video becomes desynced from the audio. Things happen on SLOBS slightly after I do them (like hand movements and whatever). The fix for this is to deactivate and reactivate the camera. Pretty annoying though how I have to do it multiple times in a 3-4 hour stream. Haven't solved the flickering issue yet. Honestly, this has been annoying as hell. I'm probably gonna return it...
legit the best webcam quality I've seen. I've already recommended it to some friends. I have my Sony A7iii so I won't be trading in my camera or anything, but anyone not wanting to go the mirrorless route should be looking at this.
Great review & comparison! I was so excited about this webcam, but then you said the maximum focus range is 4ft and damn... this is very important in my situation, where the focus range should be longer... As I said, great review!

Nice to see Elagato have done what so many have been wanting for a long time. Still love my mirrorless setup - Sony A6400 with Sigma F1.4 lens. With that being said this is great for those not wanting to go for a full on camera setup. Well done ELAGATO!
Opinion: what did the video look like before again? I'm assuming the color reproduction or whatever is on point with the elgato because it's the only one where the bottom of your shirt is red.
I want to know this aswell, the AverMedia DIDN'T look like it was chromakeyed where the other two did. The Elgato Facecam looked blatantly obvious and also was the only one that had the red bottom and red face where the other two didnt.

Just got one today and it is amazing, but OMG it took me about 3 hours to unscrew that bottom bracket to remove the mount! Mine came, screwed on painfully tight. A wrench, a knife and some WD40 and a bit of time later and it finally came off. That is no joke!
For sure the best webcam out there right now! From the smooth 60 fps to the software which Elgato nailed!!! Side note" are those ps5 controllers in the back?

Hey I got a few questions. Firstly, what color does your shirt have in the comparisons part? Is it rather blue orange or blue red? And secondly, could you compare the Elgato Facecam to the Razer Kiyo Pro?
It's a bit sus tbh - considering he reviewed the Kiyo Pro a few months ago and his take was all like "why bother with expensive webcams?" - then an equally expensive webcam comes out from Elgato with an extremely similar feature set.. and suddenly he's all like "there's just nothing like this right now" - yeah mate, except the product with the almost identical feature set, that you literally reviewed a few months ago yet was mysteriously left out of the comparison testing.. Anyway EvosVox did a good video where he compares the two albeit at default settings - Hardware Canucks tested a bunch in comparison in a video released today, in both default and optimised modes for streaming setups. The Elgato has serious noise in their streaming setup and the Kiyo Pro is easily the best once they turn that auto focus off and tweak it a bit.

@@d3xx3rDE yeah, I mean I think they're very similar but have differences that depend a lot on usage. Elgato looks like it has better software - Synapse in my experience wasn't outright BAD, but a few small improvements would make it much better. It has a better wide angle mode as the kiyo has a lot of image distortion around the edges. Some sources report it has better colour reproduction although both can do uncompressed YUV. The Kiyo pro seems to have sharper manual focus and allows you to focus on very close-up objects. It has probably the best mic I've seen on a webcam too but for most this isn't an issue. Personally I think as a largely fixed streaming cam the elgato is a good buy, but the Kiyo Pro is more versatile so you can use it for a bunch more applications. The question is whether those applications are gonna see any actual use, or if you'd prefer solid software support while mainly doing a nice wide-angle studio shot sat in front of your computer.
That software UI is amazing. You can actually change ISO and shutter speed on the C920 - OBS doesn’t have properly labeled…labels, but it’s still available!
I’ve used my GoPro Hero 8 Black for streaming with the CamLink 4K and can say this elgato looks much better. The elgato software is far better, as well. GoPro webcam software last I checked, is still in “beta” and has been for quite some time. Incredibly basic by comparison. Never had GoPro overheating issues, but elgato costs ~$200 and my GoPro is now probably around ~$300 plus accessories you’ll definitely need (stand, 4k cable, CamLink or other capture device, etc) I’d say go with the elgato if you’re not sure which direction to go.
Looking at your shirt at 7:38, the colors are very different. Two questions: 1. Which camera got it right? 2. Assuming it was the Elgato - Is there a way to change the white balance / colors of the other two?

For $200 at launch, it's kinda hard to swallow, but nowadays you can get it for around $150, sometimes you can even get it from Amazon for around $120-130. At that price point, this webcam is a steal. I think they also made a few improvements with the firmware and the webcam software.

I was shocked by how good it looked when you unveiled it, although when you did show I had to check what resolution the videos was on, it just seemed like it was missing something idk
The weight of a webcam is so irrelevant. It’s like how beats by Dre makes parts that should be plastic out of cast metal so they are heavier and makes people ok with paying out the ass for an artificially weighted product as if that somehow means quality.
I really was wondering when Elgato would just drop a webcam. Glad they finally did and showed up to play even. Would love to pick this up soon after I make some other hardware upgrades first.

I own a Brio (per your recommendation from ages ago), and I saw this and went "This'd have to be AMAZING for me to consider getting." ...the Brio is still VERY good, but this clarity combined with the software will be NUTS.
i have this camera right now. i was going to get a cheaper one at around 220 aud but found this for just under 300 aud and i am super happy with it. it is 100% better then my old camera!
I think if Razor update their software for ISO control for the Kiyo Pro, it takes the cake. The noise control on it is unmatched so far especially in low light and the HDR feature is a massive bonus. I returned my 513 almost right away for the pro and even out of the box it was night and day.
Also manual focus is top deck - IIRC the Elgato has a fixed focus, so within normal range you can better tweak the manual focus on the Kiyo Pro for a sharper image, but it can also do super close-ups and longer range quite well too. This is better if you like doing close-up product shots or electronics, or painting miniatures or something like that - and the longer focus option is cool if you play in a band or wanna do other full-room performances - or things like lecture capture. The Elgato definitely has the nicer wide-angle mode though since the Kiyo wide angle looks like a fish-eye lens.
Honestly surprised at the quality and resolution on the initial reveal. I noticed you changed the back lighting. Was that an issue prior before you turned on the lights?
colours are a bit undersaturated which is good for color correction, i feel its a bit over sharpened especially when you look at your beard seeing the fact no lighting was used whatsoever, i agree, best webcam ever
There's still a lot of room for the improvement, however the software seems to be exceptional as expected from Elgato! The sensor this one is using is designed for security camera products and is same as Dell's UltraSharp 4K webcam (btw. when a review?).
ngl, I like the cam quality and color way better than the cam you were using for the intro. I realize that its probably a shift in lighting to some extent, I assume the first part was using natural light and bright white studio lights or something, but the Elgato section just has warmer more inviting colors. It may also be because you turned on the overhead basement lights and I think you turned off the studio light or the sun shifted so there isn't as much glare, but I think it looks great.
I'm not sure if it's the framerate:shutter ratio being off or if it's the camera itself but the motion captured is super jarring. Colours are just okay and the image seems oversharpened. Low light performance is good though! Could be a decent backup but it definitely won't compete with any mirrorless camera. Nice review though! Keep up the good work!
The thought of the app that gives you all the DSLR information and lets you adjust it means a lot to a photographer cause i like to have all of the settings at my fingertips.
Hello. I have become your fan in the last couple days on webcam reviews. Very honest and precise reviews that smart and technical people like us can appreciate possibly more. One question - would you say Elgato facecam is stil as of 2023 May the best looking webcam or have you come across another?
Purchased! For work, the mirrorless + cam link setup is a bit heavy handed. You have to worry about the camera turning on, turning off, etc, throughout the day. These are not 1 and done meetings. These are 6 meetings spread out through the day. Was I getting great picture quality? YES! Was it convenient by any means? Definitely not. Reverted back to a webcam and though the quality wasn't as good, it was so much more turnkey.
Initial opinion: It's certainly a good webcam. Doesn't seem to distort colors, the focus is good, it's definitely got a clear and smooth image, which are some of the most important things. May not be the clearest you can get, but compared to other webcams I've seen, it's quite good. Add to the fact that content creators will be using it scaled down drastically a majority of the time, it is more than clear enough for their purposes. After the reveal: Holy shit that was the lighting you had in the first shot? That's insane. Overall, it looks really good, and now I really want one, but I don't know if it's worth the $200 price tag. Especially since I don't have a ton I can spend freely at the moment. Maybe something for a Christmas gift to myself
Honestly this is going to be a godsend for a lot of people, since it mounts right on the monitor and its WAY cheaper than getting an a6100, even an a6000. Also the software options make it super easy to get a good image out of the camera, definitely good enough for streaming. Well done, Elgato, fantastic announcements today.
I don't think so. Logitech is everyone's first choice because they have built a good reputation with the C920/22 that pretty much everyone has, and is the go-to for those that don't. This facecam is expensive, big and has no built in mic that some people would benefit from. I did like the picture quality. Better than all the recent webcams reviewed and the manual controls are pretty good. Problem is you want the webcam to do as little work as possible to avoid frame drops and grain. So performance may slow down if it's running for hours on end. While the imagine quality is definitely an improvement, I think this cam will be like all the other ones we've seen recently, forgotten.
This is the stuff I live for! They're focusing more on the lens and software to tweak the camera. I'd honestly pay around 250-300 for a good webcam that has an incredible lens vs a DSLR for at least 600 or a webcam that produces sub par image quality for cheap. It's good to see were finally getting more decent options that meet in the middle.
Thanks a lot for mentioning the fixed focus. I've seen a lot of reviews and none mentioned it. I was aware of it but thought it just means I have to manually set it whenever I move further away but turns out if I want to jump between being right next to my pc and middle of the room over 5ft away then it won't work for me.
The webcam looks amazing. Seems a little sharp compared to what I would use if I was streaming, but I can see that is something the software allows you to change.
As a photographer & videographer with a Sony A7III and a Fuji X100V, this is for sure a good buy imo. I can’t be bothered to setup my sony just for a webcam when I’m using it on a daily basis for shoots. With this out now, I don’t think people should be buying mirrorless cameras + camlink unless they’re able to make that money back quickly from streaming.
As someone who has a Logitech C920 and eventually wanta to upgrade to a mirrorless setup, this webcam is cool but definitely can't justify getting it. Makes more sense to save that money and spend it on a good camera later on down the road.
What I've seen in other reviews is that the large sensor, wide aperture, and fixed focus made the user appear more like a person out in front of the background. You get the same effect with mirror, or with your setup that lights up the foreground while the background is dark, but it's the first plug-and-play webcam I've seen that does this. In contrast the 3k brio gives you a very flat look.
Honestly, does this make you consider a webcam or are you still gunning for a mirrorless setup?
For the price, I'm saving up for a true Camera and use my Cam Link still. It's just not enough to replace that quality image

i got a canon eos rp for photography with a 24-105 f4L, but i still use the canon webcam utility software. I hope there are updates to that soon.

The fact that this webcam blended even remotely well with the pro-level footage that came before was all the selling I needed. Fits my setup perfectly

Opinion: what did the video look like before again?
I'm assuming the color reproduction or whatever is on point with the elgato because it's the only one where the bottom of your shirt is red.
I want to know this aswell, the AverMedia DIDN'T look like it was chromakeyed where the other two did. The Elgato Facecam looked blatantly obvious and also was the only one that had the red bottom and red face where the other two didnt.

Just got one today and it is amazing, but OMG it took me about 3 hours to unscrew that bottom bracket to remove the mount! Mine came, screwed on painfully tight. A wrench, a knife and some WD40 and a bit of time later and it finally came off. That is no joke!
For sure the best webcam out there right now! From the smooth 60 fps to the software which Elgato nailed!!! Side note" are those ps5 controllers in the back?

Firstly, what color does your shirt have in the comparisons part? Is it rather blue orange or blue red?
And secondly, could you compare the Elgato Facecam to the Razer Kiyo Pro?

It's a bit sus tbh - considering he reviewed the Kiyo Pro a few months ago and his take was all like "why bother with expensive webcams?" - then an equally expensive webcam comes out from Elgato with an extremely similar feature set.. and suddenly he's all like "there's just nothing like this right now" - yeah mate, except the product with the almost identical feature set, that you literally reviewed a few months ago yet was mysteriously left out of the comparison testing..
Anyway EvosVox did a good video where he compares the two albeit at default settings - Hardware Canucks tested a bunch in comparison in a video released today, in both default and optimised modes for streaming setups. The Elgato has serious noise in their streaming setup and the Kiyo Pro is easily the best once they turn that auto focus off and tweak it a bit.
@@sonicwingnut Thank you for your referals to the videos of EposVox and Hardware Canucks. I'm really on the edge of the Razer Kiyo Pro and the Elgato Facecam. I just don't know which one to choose.
@@d3xx3rDE yeah, I mean I think they're very similar but have differences that depend a lot on usage.
Elgato looks like it has better software - Synapse in my experience wasn't outright BAD, but a few small improvements would make it much better. It has a better wide angle mode as the kiyo has a lot of image distortion around the edges. Some sources report it has better colour reproduction although both can do uncompressed YUV.
The Kiyo pro seems to have sharper manual focus and allows you to focus on very close-up objects. It has probably the best mic I've seen on a webcam too but for most this isn't an issue.
Personally I think as a largely fixed streaming cam the elgato is a good buy, but the Kiyo Pro is more versatile so you can use it for a bunch more applications. The question is whether those applications are gonna see any actual use, or if you'd prefer solid software support while mainly doing a nice wide-angle studio shot sat in front of your computer.
That software UI is amazing. You can actually change ISO and shutter speed on the C920 - OBS doesn’t have properly labeled…labels, but it’s still available!
I'd like to see a GoPro vs this webcam, to see a comparison at least.
This. I've been considering moving to a GoPro, but the elgato here has enticed me that I'd love a comparison.
If you try to use a GoPro as a webcam, it will over heat from what I seen online. That’s why you never see anyone use them as one.

I’ve used my GoPro Hero 8 Black for streaming with the CamLink 4K and can say this elgato looks much better. The elgato software is far better, as well. GoPro webcam software last I checked, is still in “beta” and has been for quite some time. Incredibly basic by comparison. Never had GoPro overheating issues, but elgato costs ~$200 and my GoPro is now probably around ~$300 plus accessories you’ll definitely need (stand, 4k cable, CamLink or other capture device, etc) I’d say go with the elgato if you’re not sure which direction to go.
Looking at your shirt at 7:38, the colors are very different. Two questions:
1. Which camera got it right?
2. Assuming it was the Elgato - Is there a way to change the white balance / colors of the other two?

So I only looked at the actual image of the facecam for like 5 seconds but I do think that it looks great for a webcam! Not keen to find out about the price tho...

Adding filters to the camera in obs filters makes it have to encode a second time making it look more sh!t. Its better to add filters from the source
For $200 at launch, it's kinda hard to swallow, but nowadays you can get it for around $150, sometimes you can even get it from Amazon for around $120-130. At that price point, this webcam is a steal. I think they also made a few improvements with the firmware and the webcam software.

I was shocked by how good it looked when you unveiled it, although when you did show I had to check what resolution the videos was on, it just seemed like it was missing something idk
The weight of a webcam is so irrelevant. It’s like how beats by Dre makes parts that should be plastic out of cast metal so they are heavier and makes people ok with paying out the ass for an artificially weighted product as if that somehow means quality.
I really was wondering when Elgato would just drop a webcam. Glad they finally did and showed up to play even. Would love to pick this up soon after I make some other hardware upgrades first.

I own a Brio (per your recommendation from ages ago), and I saw this and went "This'd have to be AMAZING for me to consider getting."
...the Brio is still VERY good, but this clarity combined with the software will be NUTS.

i have this camera right now. i was going to get a cheaper one at around 220 aud but found this for just under 300 aud and i am super happy with it. it is 100% better then my old camera!
I think if Razor update their software for ISO control for the Kiyo Pro, it takes the cake. The noise control on it is unmatched so far especially in low light and the HDR feature is a massive bonus. I returned my 513 almost right away for the pro and even out of the box it was night and day.
Also manual focus is top deck - IIRC the Elgato has a fixed focus, so within normal range you can better tweak the manual focus on the Kiyo Pro for a sharper image, but it can also do super close-ups and longer range quite well too. This is better if you like doing close-up product shots or electronics, or painting miniatures or something like that - and the longer focus option is cool if you play in a band or wanna do other full-room performances - or things like lecture capture.
The Elgato definitely has the nicer wide-angle mode though since the Kiyo wide angle looks like a fish-eye lens.

Honestly surprised at the quality and resolution on the initial reveal. I noticed you changed the back lighting. Was that an issue prior before you turned on the lights?

colours are a bit undersaturated which is good for color correction, i feel its a bit over sharpened especially when you look at your beard

There's still a lot of room for the improvement, however the software seems to be exceptional as expected from Elgato! The sensor this one is using is designed for security camera products and is same as Dell's UltraSharp 4K webcam (btw. when a review?).
I just purchased one of these and it is a big step up from the Logitech C922 that I have been using! I really like it!
ngl, I like the cam quality and color way better than the cam you were using for the intro. I realize that its probably a shift in lighting to some extent, I assume the first part was using natural light and bright white studio lights or something, but the Elgato section just has warmer more inviting colors. It may also be because you turned on the overhead basement lights and I think you turned off the studio light or the sun shifted so there isn't as much glare, but I think it looks great.
I'm not sure if it's the framerate:shutter ratio being off or if it's the camera itself but the motion captured is super jarring. Colours are just okay and the image seems oversharpened. Low light performance is good though! Could be a decent backup but it definitely won't compete with any mirrorless camera.

The thought of the app that gives you all the DSLR information and lets you adjust it means a lot to a photographer cause i like to have all of the settings at my fingertips.
Hello. I have become your fan in the last couple days on webcam reviews. Very honest and precise reviews that smart and technical people like us can appreciate possibly more. One question - would you say Elgato facecam is stil as of 2023 May the best looking webcam or have you come across another?
Purchased! For work, the mirrorless + cam link setup is a bit heavy handed. You have to worry about the camera turning on, turning off, etc, throughout the day. These are not 1 and done meetings. These are 6 meetings spread out through the day. Was I getting great picture quality? YES! Was it convenient by any means? Definitely not. Reverted back to a webcam and though the quality wasn't as good, it was so much more turnkey.
Initial opinion: It's certainly a good webcam. Doesn't seem to distort colors, the focus is good, it's definitely got a clear and smooth image, which are some of the most important things. May not be the clearest you can get, but compared to other webcams I've seen, it's quite good. Add to the fact that content creators will be using it scaled down drastically a majority of the time, it is more than clear enough for their purposes.
After the reveal: Holy shit that was the lighting you had in the first shot? That's insane. Overall, it looks really good, and now I really want one, but I don't know if it's worth the $200 price tag. Especially since I don't have a ton I can spend freely at the moment. Maybe something for a Christmas gift to myself
Honestly this is going to be a godsend for a lot of people, since it mounts right on the monitor and its WAY cheaper than getting an a6100, even an a6000. Also the software options make it super easy to get a good image out of the camera, definitely good enough for streaming. Well done, Elgato, fantastic announcements today.
I don't think so. Logitech is everyone's first choice because they have built a good reputation with the C920/22 that pretty much everyone has, and is the go-to for those that don't. This facecam is expensive, big and has no built in mic that some people would benefit from. I did like the picture quality. Better than all the recent webcams reviewed and the manual controls are pretty good. Problem is you want the webcam to do as little work as possible to avoid frame drops and grain. So performance may slow down if it's running for hours on end. While the imagine quality is definitely an improvement, I think this cam will be like all the other ones we've seen recently, forgotten.

This is the stuff I live for! They're focusing more on the lens and software to tweak the camera. I'd honestly pay around 250-300 for a good webcam that has an incredible lens vs a DSLR for at least 600 or a webcam that produces sub par image quality for cheap. It's good to see were finally getting more decent options that meet in the middle.
Thanks a lot for mentioning the fixed focus. I've seen a lot of reviews and none mentioned it. I was aware of it but thought it just means I have to manually set it whenever I move further away but turns out if I want to jump between being right next to my pc and middle of the room over 5ft away then it won't work for me.

The low-light performance and highlight rolloff is amazing.
The webcam looks amazing. Seems a little sharp compared to what I would use if I was streaming, but I can see that is something the software allows you to change.

As a photographer & videographer with a Sony A7III and a Fuji X100V, this is for sure a good buy imo. I can’t be bothered to setup my sony just for a webcam when I’m using it on a daily basis for shoots. With this out now, I don’t think people should be buying mirrorless cameras + camlink unless they’re able to make that money back quickly from streaming.
As someone who has a Logitech C920 and eventually wanta to upgrade to a mirrorless setup, this webcam is cool but definitely can't justify getting it. Makes more sense to save that money and spend it on a good camera later on down the road.
Great concise review, definitely worth it if you cant stretch to the budget of a mirrorless + Camlink
What I've seen in other reviews is that the large sensor, wide aperture, and fixed focus made the user appear more like a person out in front of the background.
You get the same effect with mirror, or with your setup that lights up the foreground while the background is dark, but it's the first plug-and-play webcam I've seen that does this. In contrast the 3k brio gives you a very flat look.
Pretty shocked at when you showed it off. Great cam, And this coming from someone who uses his A7R3 for his stream.
